Chapter 3 – Butterfly
No one's POV
The first thing that Jade could see, as her eyes fluttered open was that the ceiling was moving. Light after light rushed by. As her eyes began to focus a bit more, she could see two women dressed in hospital whites, standing above her.
"What?"
One of the women, who was probably in her 30's and red hair looked down. "Miss, I'm Dr. Behlen. You just collapsed a few moments ago in front of the hospital. We've got you on a stretcher and am taking up to obstetrics."
"My name is Jade."
"Jade you were lucky I came out when I did. But we're going to take good care of you."
"The Baby?" Jade said, with a grimace of pain, as one shot through her abdomen.
Dr. Behlen shook her head. "We're waiting for Dr. Chavez, she's the specialist and will say for certain, but it appears that you're having a miscarriage. I'm sorry."
Saying nothing, Jade closed her eyes for a moment as she tried to ignore the pain.
Dr. Behlen looked down at Jade's ring. "Do you need us to contact your husband?"
"No. Just do what you need to do." Jade muttered, before passing out again.
A short while later, Jade opened her eyes again and was in some sort of exam room. She could see two nurses and a female doctor, with Hispanic features that faintly reminded her of Tori.
"Jade, I'm Dr. Chavez. I've already examined you and I'm terribly sorry, you are having a miscarriage."
"What are you going to do?"
"A short procedure, shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes. It's called Dilation and Curettage, it removes the tissue from your uterus. We need to start; you're bleeding a bit and the longer we wait, the worse it will be for you. Do you have any questions?"
"No."
"Alright, are you ready?"
Wanting to end the pain, Jade nodded.
Dr. Chavez, nodded to another man in white and he put a mask over Jade's face.
"Jade, just breathe deep."
A few moments later, Jade closed her eyes.
She was a bit groggy when she finally opened her eyes again. This time she was in a different room, one she guessed was probably a recovery room of some sort. Though the pain was gone she felt like someone had scooped out her insides.
"Hello Jade. How are you feeling?" Said Dr. Chavez, walking over.
"Like Hell!"
"I'm sorry you're feeling that way. We'll get you something to help you, but the procedure is done and went very well. Normally we'd release you in a few hours, but you did bleed a bit more than we liked, so we're gong to keep you over night. We will go over it later, but this shouldn't affect your ability to have more children. You'll be taken to your room in a few moments."
As Dr. Chavez promised an orderly and nurse wheeled her gurney to a room on the 2nd floor. Once there they helped her into bed. After checking her pulse and making sure she was comfortable, the nurse pointed to a table next to the bed. "We have your bag here."
After a few more moments of explaining how to use the call button and the TV, the nurse said they would check on her in an hour.
Moments later, Jade was left alone. She reached over to her bag and extracted the phone. She dialed Beck, who answered after the first ring.
"Jade? Where are you?" Said Beck in a worried tone of voice."
In a voice strangely void of emotion, Jade responded. "I'm in Rampart Memorial hospital, in room 215. I lost the baby. I tried to visit Tori, they turned me away and as soon as I left the hospital, I had the miscarriage. Though I suspect it started sometime before that."
"I'll come. We can talk, maybe…."
Jade cut him off. "No. Don't come. I don't want you here. I'm just going to cut to the chase. I'm filing for divorce. I am in my room; the procedure went well and I should be discharged sometime tomorrow. So now you know that I am Ok. But I don't want you to come. In any case, Tori's family is upstairs and if you were to come and they saw you. I couldn't blame them for anything they did."
After a pause, Beck asked, sounding more than a bit upset. "Is there anything I can do?"
"Just don't tell anyone I'm here. Good night!" Jade then hung up the phone and turned it off.
The pain of the miscarriage for a time, drove all the despair and grief she'd been feeling away. But that was over now and Jade was alone with her thoughts. Almost without warning, Jade suddenly burst into tears.

Only one floor above and completely unaware of Jade's fate, Tori lay in her hospital Bed, pondering the future. Her dad, her mom and Trina had all talked with her separately and had done their best to convince her to break all ties with Jade. While they told Tori that Jade had been sent away, they left out most of the details of the encounter. Her mom and dad had left a half an hour ago, saying their goodbyes and promising that she'd find someone else that was even nicer.
They had told her that Jade never really loved her and used various other arguments. After a few hours, Tori began to believe it. The job was already half done by the fact that Tori had simply been worn down by all that had happened. She found herself thinking again and again about all the pain Jade had caused her. Just the wedding itself had been a nightmare.
She was brought out of her thoughts by Trina who had come in the room.
"Hey Tori. How are you feeling?"
Tori sighed and felt the bandages wrapped around her head. "I have an enormous headache, but otherwise I feel terrible"
Trina walked to the bed and kissed Tori on the forehead. "It's almost 8:00 and visiting hours are nearly over. I'm heading out."
"Why didn't you head out with mom and dad."
Tirna leaned in. "Cute young doctor. Tired to get his number."
Tori rolled her eyes. "Did you get it?"
Trina briefly huffed in frustration. "No, but he was busy. Something about taking care of sick people. Couldn't he see I wasn't sick? And I could take care of him. I'll get his number tomorrow."
Tori shrugged. "We'll see."
Trina paused for a moment. "I'm glad you've finally realized that Jade is no good for you. She used you."
Tori nodded sadly. "Yeah, I know."
"We'll get you a new place, and a new girl and you'll feel a thousand times better. Look, I've got to go. We'll talk in the morning. Later sis."
Trina smiled and exited the room and once again Tori was alone. She laid back in bed and for a while just starred at the wall. With each passing moment, she felt more and more depressed as various things passed through her mind. The first thought was how much time she had actually wasted on Jade. The next one was how Jade just took off once again.
Of course, the most painful thing at all, was her realization that Jade never loved her. "Goodbye Jade." Tori said, as a single tear ran down her cheek.

Several hours later, Jade's mental state hadn't gotten any better. In fact, she had sunk deeper and deeper into a state of depression. The nurses had checked on her a few times but they seemed satisfied that she was recovering nicely. Each time one of them checked on her, she put on her best acting skills to appear not nearly as depressed as she actually was. Some depression for a miscarriage is normal, but extreme depression would get some hospital shrink nosing into things wasn't their business.
She tried to sleep, but did so fitfully and eventually gave up. At about 2:30 in the morning, she decided to listen to opera, something she only did when she was extremely depressed. When she did, she preferred tragedies. It was something about the power of the voices and the music, that comforted her in her darkest times. Tonight, off her iPod, she selected Madame Butterfly, by Puccini.
Premiering in 1904, the opera was about an American Naval officer, named Pinkerton who was stationed in Japan. In the beginning she marries a Japanese woman named CIo-CIo-San, nicknamed Butterfly. Early on, it's very apparent that Pinkerton does not take the marriage seriously. In fact, he boasts of eventually finding a Real American wife. Butterfly does take it seriously and in fact marries him over her family's objections, causing her to be disowned by her family.
After the marriage and honeymoon with a beautiful love duet, he leaves on his ship. He promises Butterfly that he would return the next spring. Some 3 years later, Pinkerton has not returned. Butterfly, however never looses faith and in fact has a 3-year-old son, by Pinkerton.
After 3 years he does return, with his new American wife, named Kate. They have returned as Pinkerton has learned he as a son and he and Kate are going to raise him in America. In the end, butterfly is destroyed by this revelation that he never really loved her. He can't even initially face her as he's a coward. In the end, she says goodbye to her son and commits Seppuku which is ritual suicide. Pinkerton tries to go to her in the end, feeling guilty, but is too late.
Listening in the dark, with her headphones on, the opera did nothing to comfort her or make her feel better. In fact, while Jade was listening to the heartbreaking number where Butterfly meets Kate and realizes Pinkerton never loved her, Jade came to a startling and rather soul crushing revelation.
"My God. I'm Pinkerton. Tori loved me from the beginning I'm sure of that. I didn't take it seriously at first. But she faithfully kept waiting for me. In this case, to come to her and stay forever. But then I "show up with Kate, my Real American Wife, otherwise known as Beck. My God, the pain the agony she must have felt. She wanted me to run away with her and while I knew the wedding would be unpleasant for her, but only now do I understand just how much pain she was in. It must have been agonizing and it was all my fault. I came to her like Pinkerton, but it was too late. While Tori did not commit suicide, she is now forever out of my reach. I am no better than Pinkerton"
Already devastated, this final realization destroyed what was left of her. She suddenly felt like everything inside of her had died. She thought about the opera and how written on the knife that Butterfly kills herself with is a saying. It was, who cannot live with honor, must die with honor. That was her only option left. In the morning, she'd check out of the hospital, drive to the nearest hotel and kill herself.
Having decided her course of action, Jade from her bag pulled out a folder and a pen. Then she wrote her suicide note, and shoved it back in the folder. Placing the folder on the nightstand, she decided to go to sleep for the last time.
One last dream before the end, Jade thought. She hoped it would be a dream of Tori.

Across town in the darkness of his trailer, Beck had barely slept at all. Feeling both betrayed, ashamed and hurt, he tried to make sense out of it all. Tori when she came over, was trying to help and he repaid her by putting her in the hospital.
Jade was gone, the baby was gone, his marriage over. It was all one giant mess. More than anything he wanted to apologize. Despite what Tori had done, she didn't deserve what he did. He wanted to make it up in some way, do something to at least try to atone for what he'd done.
Then just after 7 am, an idea struck him. In his mind, it was the only thing he could do for Tori. It was a hard thing to do, but it was the only thing.
He picked up his phone and sent a quick email to Tori.
From: Beck
To: Tori
Subject: Jade lost the baby
Tori, I can't begin to apologize for what I did. I did it and there's no way around it. I am sorry. But there is one thing and one thing only I can do to try make it up to you. Though Jade asked me not to tell anyone, I will tell you that Immediately after leaving the hospital last night, she suffered a miscarriage. She was hospitalized and is in room 215.
Beck
Tori who had woken up, shortly before Beck had sent the email, was feeling empty and lost. She didn't know what she'd do without Jade in her life, but as much as her heart ached, she had to cut ties. Jade never loved her and that was that.
Hoping to cheer herself up, she decided to check her phone. She was sure there'd be some get well messages from family and friends. Perhaps one of them would lift her spirits.
The first thing she noticed was there was no messages from Jade. Something that only convinced her that Jade never really cared for her. Besides, messages from Andre, Cat, Robbie and several other's she saw the email from Beck. She was hesitant to open the message at first, until she saw the title.
Once she opened the email, she had to read it no less than three times. Jade was here, on the floor below her. Not even thinking twice, Tori slowly pulled herself out of the hospital bed and put on her robe. Her head was still pounding and she felt dizzy just standing up, but she needed to go to Jade.
Just in case someone came looking for her, she left a note saying she was in room 215 seeing Jade. At this point she didn't care what anyone thought.
Determined, she slowly made her way to the door and out into the hospital corridor. Hoping she wouldn't get seen sneaking out of her room, she waited until the corridor was clear and made her way to the nearby stairwell. The doctor had told her she was to rest and not move around a lot, but Tori didn't care.
Once on the 2nd floor, she snuck across the corridor to room 215. With each step forward, Tori could feel her heart pound faster. She had no idea what to expect, but no force in the world would keep her from that room.
Reaching the room without incident, Tori grabbed the handle and pushed the door open. Though the lights were off, the room was well lit from the morning sun. Looking over at the bed, Tori's heart leapt as she saw the sleeping form of Jade. Not wanting to disturb Jade she slowly crept over.
Jade was sound asleep and for a full 2 minutes Tori quietly watched chest rise and fall with each breath. She was about to gently touch Jade's hair when she spotted a folder and pen on the nightstand. Looking just a bit closer, Tori spotted the corner of a piece of paper sticking out of the folder. Curious, Tori pulled out the piece of paper and began to read what was written on it.
"To whom it may concern,
I could write a long note about how life is meaningless or go into great length as to why I've decided to take my life, But I won't. All you need to know is, that I feel dead inside. There is nothing left. And, much like Pinkerton, I have lost my butterfly. That is why, I've decided to kill myself.
Jade West.
Tori dopped the sheet of paper, as her whole body began to shake. Feeling overwhelmed, Tori then put her hand over her mouth and silently began to cry. After thinking about it for a moment, she realized what the Pinkerton reference meant. Madame Butterfly was one of her mother's favorite operas and her parents took her and Trina to it about 5 or 6 years ago.
Terribly upset, she tried to work it out. "Jade sees herself, as Pinkerton and me as…"
Stopping her thought, Tori decided close the blind as the sun was now shining through the window directly into Jade's face. Not wanting the sun to wake Jade, she decided to close it.
Just as Tori walked to the window, Jade opened her eyes. Where Tori was standing, the light shown in the window directly behind her. At first, all Jade could see was a female figure, bathed in soft light. For a moment even, the position of the blinds made it look like she had wings. And in that moment, Jade though she was seeing an angel. It was a moving experience.
Before she had a chance to process it, the figure drew the blinds closed slightly blocking out the light.
It was then Jade realized, she wasn't seeing an angel, it was a butterfly, her beautiful perfect, loving Butterfly. Instantly Jade began to cry, and reached out her hand to Tori.
Tori had come for her. Just that knowledge alone, filled her soul with love. She now knew who she was supposed to be with. She now knew, who she truly loved.
Tori, who was still crying, walked over to the bed. Then she sat down and pulled Jade into her arms. Not saying anything, the pair cried in each other's arms.
Finally Jade pulled back. "You came for me!"
Tori wiped a tear, only to have it replaced by another. "Why were you going to kill yourself? How could you?"
"I'd lost you. I came and they said I could never see you again. That a restraining order taken out against me if I ever tried to contact you again. I'd lost you. I was terrible to you. You were my butterfly, you waited for me and I married Kate. I lost you. I thought I'd lost you forever."
Tori frowned and cried even more. "You left. I tried to help. I didn't think you loved me. I felt abandoned, I'm sorry you lost the baby and I never knew anything about any restraining order. I'd never do that."
"Did I lose you?" Jade asked, looking more heartbroken than Tori had ever seen her.
Tori gently stroked Jade's hair, something she knew would calm Jade down. "No baby. I doubted you loved me. I so very sorry I did. Please forgive me. Did I lose you?"
Jade smiled for moment. "No but you had every reason to doubt me. I am so sorry that he hurt you. Can I ask you something, please?"
"Of course."
"Is it too late to change my mind?"
Not sure what Jade meant, Tori wiped another tear. "About what?"
Starting to cry even harder and nearly overcome, Jade managed to choke out the words. "You said to me n the day of my wedding, that I could get married, live with Beck live with Beck forever and never have this happen again or put a stop to this and be with you. Can I change my mind Tori? Can I be with you. I'm divorcing Beck. I was wrong. When I saw you just now in the window, I realized you are the person I want to be with. You are my Butterfly. I was wrong…"
At this point, Jade completely Broke down. "Please Tori, can I change my mind? Please let me be with you forever….."
Not hesitating for a single instant, Tori pulled Jade into her arms again. She then cried in Jade's ear. "It's never too late. I love you. Please tell me, you won't hurt yourself, please."
"I won't. I have you now. I love you Tori, my perfect butterfly." Sobbed Jade.
Half an hour later, Tori's mom arrived at the hospital and not finding Tori in her room, went downstairs with the nurse to bring Tori back.
Once they entered Jade's room, they saw, Tori and Jade laying together on the bed. The newly reforged couple was wrapped in a loving embrace and fast asleep. Even Tori's mom couldn't deny, that on each of their faces was a look of pure contentment.
Though I don't use the song in the chapter, I was inspired the song "Hard Drug" by Lebanon Hanover.
