A/N Trigger Warning- Homophobia in part of the chapter.
The O'Brien Farm
"You can't imagine how happy you've made me Walter" Louise smiled fussing over her son "You can get engaged in about 3/4 months then we can speak to the Father and have you married this time next year at the church here as me and you father, your grandparents and your great grandparents have been" She said her eyes brimming with tears of joy.
Paige winced, something not unnoticed by Louise "What is it dear?" She asked concerned. "I'm already Married mother." Walter admitted "I may be able to petition the Father for a annulment but I doubt he'll allow us to marry there. We'd erm likely have to married at a registery office instead". Louise eyes darkened "what-do-you-mean-son" she replied through gritted teeth. "Tread carefully" Paige whispered in Walter's ear.
"I er have been Married for a few years to a fellow employee- you've er met her before. Happy Quinn" Walter replied wincing as Louise's face turned red with anger. Paige stepped in to defend him "Its not what you think! it was a court house wedding to keep him in the country- no religion, no church and only a quick peck on the lips at the end of their vows." Walter nodded in agreement "Yes the Marriage was never er consumated... it was purely for my Visa."
Louise glared at Walter for a few moments then took a deep breath. "I need a minute." She said evenly "I'm going to speak to your father" Louise finished before walking out the door, slamming it as she went.
"Bullpoop" Walter and Paige deadpanned.
Kilkenny Airport
"Walter stop pacing, you're making me dizzy" Paige moaned.
"I can't- Ralph will be here soon and e-everything is going wrong today. Paige what if he doesn't accept me?" Walter panicked, frowning as Paige laughed daintily "Walter he's wanted us to be together for years. This will be a dream come true for him- so sit and calm down. Everything is going to be fine I promise" she said patting the seat next to her.
Walter sighed and sat down leaning his head on Paiges shoulders as she began rubbed his knee for comfort. "It feels like when everything just seems to be going right a new drama unfolds. I'm having a hard time processing it all" Walter said sadly. "I know baby, I know" Paige replied, bringing him in for a sweet kiss "But it'll all be worth it in the end".
Walter smiled for a minute enjoying the moment, before suddenly sitting up. "Oh no! Toby doesn't know about the marriage- he and Happy are staying for dinner tonight! My parents are certain to bring it up!" He panicked. Paige shared a look of concern with him.
"Not good" she replied.
The Steppes Bar
Thomas had the bar's attention as he loudly as he drunkenly told his story, swinging his pint as he went "and what do I find in his drawer? Photo clippings from the local paper of the neighbours freak son. He's been getting it off to them the creep!" he said swaying slightly. Laughter and gasps filled the bar "Now I don't like O'Brien, never have done, but at least he's straight- imagine how he's gunna feel knowing another fella wants to bum him? I'd never leave the house again!" He exclaimed to to the bars laughing patrons.
"I've been living with this disgusting creature all his life and had no idea how... unnatural he was. Obviously I had to chuck him out. He left me no choice" He finished to the agreement of many others.
At the back of the pub Tobin frowned. While Conner's sexual preference was indeed a shock and his interest in Walter even more so, in Tobin's opinion it was no one else's business but Conners. He wasn't hurting anyone and now the poor lad would be ostracized by the church and many of the towns people for an attraction he couldn't control.
While he agreed Walter would be shocked he couldn't imagine Walter wanting Conner to loose his home because of it. Conner was always skint- always pouring his money into his and Thomas's failing plumbing business while his brother spunked away any profit they did make down the pub.
He would speak to his sister. The kid needed a home and he knew just the place.
Over 5,000 miles away
a man pulled a hoody up over his head as he made his way onto a ship. He passed a envelope full of cash to a crewman who smirked before showing him to a empty room. "This room was never booked. You just stay in here, be quiet and no one will be any the wiser" he said "I'll lock you in now and come back and collect you when it's time to leave." "Thank you the hooded man replied. "You're doing me a real solid". The crewman looked down at his envelope of cash again and brought his other hand out to shake the hooded man's hand firmly "No the pleasure is all mine Mr Armstrong" the crewman finished before leaving the room and locking the door.
