Appearance:
Anguirus has an elongated crocodile-like snout tipped with a small sharp beak and a singular nasal horn above his nostrils. His mouth is lined with two rows of teeth with each of them being different from one another in terms of shape and function. The first row is visibly protruding from both upper and lower jaws like a crocodile and the upper pair of large mammalian-like canine fangs are also protruding out and they are shaped like conical spikes, which are good for inflicting massive crushing damage and holding his prey in place whilst the second row of serrated, blade-like teeth inside the mouth tear the flesh into shreds thanks to the movement of his jaws. The tongue is covered in spiky hair-like pigments like that of big cats, acting as mini-claws to remove every bit of flesh from a kaiju's carcass. He has a pair of large, curved horns that grow 155 feet long from his brow and point forwards ahead like Triceratops. Then like Styracosaurus, he has spikes running up his forehead into the large spikes that adorn his small bony frill at the back of his head. He has two long epijugal, tusk-like horns growing sideways from his head near the cheeks and more spikes running down his cheeks. His body resembles Ankylosaurus with a rounded body and thick, armored legs. His shoulders slope up into a hunchback, where his back quickly slopes down to his long, muscular tail. His body has olive green and earth-brownish scaly skin, a maroon red underside of his throat and neck whilst the rest of his underside is a lighter shade of brown almost like sand, and the horns and spikes are yellowish in color.
A member of the prehistoric baurusuchid crocodilians that evolved into their own species of Titans in the Late Cretaceous. Like all Titans or Kaiju, the Ankylosuchoides had their genome incorporate traits from other ancient reptiles, including dinosaurs. What was uncertain was their place of origin. Most of the Baurrusuchidae and their relatives were in South America, Madagascar, and Pakistan. Even though it might have been logically feasible to place Anguirus' kin in the same ancestral homelands of their close non-kaiju relatives, that doesn't wholly explain as to how and why the Ankylosuchoides ventured into unknown territory further up in more temperate northeastern Eurasia where there's greater competition amongst the newer dinosaurian species of Titans compared to their ancestral strongholds in the southern tropics where they were the dominant keystone species.
Regardless of how his kin reached into what is now modern-day Russia, Anguirus is undoubtedly the most heavily-armored Titan of all time in Earth's history of life. A row of three spikes runs down each side of his neck. Nearly his entire body is covered in armor, including the neck, shoulders, dorsum, underbelly, hips, legs, and the tail in the form of semi-overlapping armor plates that grant them impenetrable protection and flexibility. All of his segregated plates that comprise his carapace are covered in seven rows of sharp spikes starting at the shoulders. Five rows of large spines run down his tail towards the spiked club. Both shoulder and hip spikes, and the ones on his tail, including his clubbed tip, are the largest. The armor plates, spikes, and horns are coated in semi-reflective materials that provide protection from energy-based daikaiju attacks. The hardened spikes covering the body add an additional layer of protection, as well as being a good deterrent against opponents. The nasal horn and the pair of brow horns are great offensive and defensive weapons for Anguirus to gore his enemies right in the gut or to keep them at bay as he aims his horns right at them. Even his epijugal cheek horns act as tusks that could potentially wound his opponent after swinging his head around. The horns and spikes around his head can vibrate, manipulating the electrons and soundwaves into an electromagnetic shield of sorts where the kinetic energy of the opposing force's impact is absorbed and stored into specific parts of the beast's body such as the frill, its forelimbs, the carapace, and the tail club for a more powerful counterattacking strike. The tail club is shaped like a cross between a morning star and a double-bladed battle ax with two rows of small spikes adorning its top and the two of the largest blade-like spikes grow sideways from the club, almost resembling a battle ax. The massive teeth and hand claws can grip onto enemies with unfathomable strength, ensuring that they do not easily escape unscathed. Anguirus usually walks around on all fours, and in a stance similar to that of Triceratops. The elbows flexed to behind and slightly bowed out, in an intermediate state between fully upright and fully sprawling whilst the back legs are straight and upward. When needing to cover more ground, he will lunge forward in a burst of speed before rolling up into a ball of thorns. Sometimes before a fight, Anguirus would temporarily stand on his hind legs while roaring at the top of his lungs to make himself look bigger and more threatening to his would-be rival. He could also periodically stand himself upright when he gets into wrestling bouts with taller bipedal kaiju like Godzilla.
History:
Anguirus
February 3rd, 1962. Eight years since the first Godzillasaurus ryujin specimen, Gojira, had been subdued, incapacitated, and his remains extracted from Tokyo Bay for scientific study by a private corporation funded in secret by the then-incipient United Nations. The public had assumed that the threat of Gojira was no more, that no such creature would ever threaten the world again.
The public had assumed wrong.
The earliest recorded appearance of the second Godzillasaurus specimen, Godzilla, or Gojira II, within the Yukon-Koyukuk region of Alaska, United States, was noteworthy in that unlike his predecessor, who had operated alone on his own, Godzilla had another Titan fighting him. This Titan, which was also another relic of the antediluvian Age of Reptiles, was locked in heated combat with this new Godzillasaurus who had been affected by the Castle Bravo thermonuclear bomb test eight years ago. This new beast must have been further away from the blast than Godzilla's kind, since it exhibited less evidence of mutation than the previous Gojira, whereas Gojira II was more directly affected, presumably being shielded from the majority of the fallout only by his own older brother, Godzilla I - perhaps explaining why he was able to grow so quickly to such a more titanic, imposing size and mass in such a short space of time. The armored, spiked quadruped, in the meantime, was a wonder in its own right because not only was it engaging in a toe-to-toe match against this new Godzillasaurus but even looked like it was winning. However, that changed when the armored beast tried to bite Godzilla right in the gills and in turn, suffered a clawing slash to his snout and left eye, which resulted in the beast being blinded with blood squirting all over his face. It tried to instinctively retaliate by smashing Godzilla in the face with its tail club, hoping to break his jaws. Unfortunately, its move was so telegraphed and predictable that Godzilla saw it coming a mile away as he grasped it by the spiky tail. After the armored beast was being slammed all over the river valley, it avoided its near-death experience by curling itself up into a spiked ball, rolling fast away from Godzilla's Atomic Breath that scorched the very forests and river of the land. The battle ended in a draw as the armored behemoth struck Godzilla in the head to stun him long enough for it to burrow into the earth to escape.
As the government attempted to deal with Gojira II, attempting to deploy the newly completed American war assault robot, USS Talos, to defeat and neutralize him in combat, what little photographic evidence could be gained of the second monster was obtained for close examination. While the photographs are still somewhat blurry in their quality, it is clear that the appearance of the new monster matches the witnesses' testimonies of the beast being a dinosaur-like reptile. The presence of the smaller nasal horn, the two larger brow horns, and its bony, spiked head frill, which are features commonly known to Triceratops, whilst the rest of his body resembles more of Ankylosaurus with large nodosaurid-like spines further confused the scientists' attempts to identify what kind of animal it was. Debates intensified as to whether Anguirus was originally thought to be a ceratopsid or an ankylosaurid species of dinosaur as this beast seemed to exhibit characteristics of both dinosaur groups along with several aspects of its anatomy that were more akin to crocodilians, armadillos, and hedgehogs. Because of this, the beast was named Ankylosuchoides triceratus whilst being nicknamed "Angilas" after a mispronunciation due to combining the genus and species names together into one, which later is romanticized as "Anguirus". It would only later be deduced that his closest relatives were the extinct terrestrial crocodilians of the Jurassic and Cretaceous, most of which were found in South America and Madagascar - how his ancestors had managed to make it to eastern Eurasia would remain a mystery for the time being. As of now, Anguirus had surfaced for the second time after weakening the earthly foundations beneath Godzilla's feet to cause a faultline, which the earth collapsed apart and resulted in Godzilla falling into a massive crater-like hole the size of Michigan Stadium. Anguirus rolled down the crater as a spiky ball and bludgeoned him in the side. With that, the second round of their previously unfinished fight was on. Just like the first round, the brawl was viciously brutal and ugly with Anguirus and Godzilla at each other tooth and claw. Godzilla deflected two of Anguirus' rolling ball attacks with his forearm spurs and actually slashed back at the dinosaur-like kaiju with them along with his claws. Anguirus produced an energy field by vibrating his horns and spikes, including the ones on his short bony frill, that shielded him from his clawing slashes and counterattacked soon afterward with an incredible swinging arc of his tail club, to which Godzilla blocked the attack with one of his forearm and its own blade-like spurs before deflecting the blow away from him. Godzilla retaliated with the spewing of his Atomic Breath and Anguirus shielded himself from the blast with this mysterious energy field. He was pushed back 50 meters or so by the strong kinetic force of Godzilla's Atomic Breath, leaving deep claw marks on the crater's ground. Then, with surprising quickness that belied his own size, Anguirus launched his sharpest and longest spines, sans his tail club's own curved spikes, from his long, flexible, and heavily muscular tail, unleashing them into a hail-like volley against Godzilla with his next strong tail swing. Like machine gun fire, Godzilla was pelted by these javelin-like projectile spines; several of which bounced off from the bladed spurs of his beefy and massive forearms, which he used to shield his face and chest from them. However, many more pierced through his softer underside, the gaps between his armored scales present on his thighs, and the kneecap of his right leg.
Godzilla ignored most of the pain, though he subtly winced a bit, he was not going to let his rival have the satisfaction of seeing him visibly hurt. He charged immediately at Anguirus and the armored kaiju decided to do the same with the intent of gouging him in the chest or belly with his horns. Godzilla saw this coming though, and at the last minute, made an evasive maneuver by strafing right of Anguirus. He then tried to bite him down onto his neck, but Anguirus prevented him from doing so by swinging his head in his direction and headbutting him hard. The Monster King then tail whipped him right into his literal blind spot that was the scarred left side of his face with his eyelid shut where the eye used to be open. The blow sent him rolling across the crater until he landed onto his armored carapace, dazed and bruised. Godzilla stomped furiously towards Anguirus until he was close enough to lift his left foot high up above the dazed Ankylosaur-like monster with the intent to pin him firmly underfoot. Anguirus snapped himself out of it just in time to see Godzilla stomping his foot hard onto his chest-abdominal area. Godzilla looked down onto his armored rival as his tail's spines lit up with the concentrated azure radioactive energy eventually reaching his dorsal plates, through his throat, and all the way to his mouth in the form of a charging Atomic Breath. However, Anguirus refused to go down as he huffed up his armored chest as best as he could and let out a deafening, wailing sonic-oscillatory roar that actually forced Godzilla off of him with its sheer concussive force. After recovering, Anguirus wasted no time subjugating Godzilla to painful torture under his ear-shattering, headache-inducing sonic roars, in which the combined pain of having his sensitive hearing ripped apart and scales actually being ripped off, unfortunately, served to drive the Atomic Leviathan into maddening bloodlust. Godzilla retaliated furiously with his Atomic Breath, striking Anguirus right in the left side of his face, which pained and infuriated him as he felt the intense heat sear painfully through the wounds of his snout. Both Kaiju fired their heat-ray breath and the sonic oscillatory roar at each other in a brief, but tumultuous collision that resulted in a spectacular explosion of hot radioactive heatwaves and sonic shockwaves going off with the earth-shaking sound being the equivalent of an erupting volcano, an exploding atom bomb, and several thunderstorms going off simultaneously. Both monsters stumbled back from the exploding collision and crashed into the surrounding walls of their perspective side of the ever-growing crater that now swallowed more of the land down with it. The explosion destroyed the hills further away from the battle and dramatically affected the Vallecitos Boiling Water Reactor, causing power to shut down and the reactor to quickly heat up, causing a meltdown to be imminent.
Anguirus was the first to burst out of the massive landslide wearily before seeing the larger landslide on the other side of the crater glow haphazardly blue and then exploding in a furious hail of earth, rock, and fire. Godzilla emerged from the earthen wreckage all the more wrathful and extremely irate with nearly all of his battle wounds healed and with unbound hatred for Anguirus burning madly in his now blood crimson eyes as he let out a much deeper, more guttural angry roar. The armored dinosaur-like kaiju roared back in tenacious defiance, not willing to back down from the fight in spite of the odds increasingly becoming against him. The newly carved out battlefield was now marred by flooding rivers that have cut through the scorched land and pooled into the middle of the crater. But neither Godzilla nor Anguirus cared about the drastic changes in geography their destructive actions have wrought about as they were too caught up in the many eons of their natural animosity towards each other as competitive predatory Titans.
So much so that they almost didn't hear the booming animalistic, yet human-like roar of the Thundering Demon God of the Skull Archipelago echoing furiously loud from beyond the hills with maddening grief and despairing sorrow evident in his voice.
Combat Statistics
Normal Abilities:
Standard Kaiju Strength:
Like other kaiju, Anguirus has the semi-mineralized physiology that enables his existence at his current scale, and the prodigious physical strength and durability that comes with it. His powerful limbs give him impressive speed for his bulk, his shoulder, and hip spikes and facial horns are effective close-range deterrents. His tail and jaws are strong enough to deal significant injury, and a full-body slam can inflict punishing forces capable of breaking kaiju bone and shattering buildings to rubble. His healing factor also seems to be more advanced than average among kaiju of his ilk, allowing him to keep fighting where other monsters would succumb to mortal injury.
Spike-Armored Hide:
The most important feature of Anguirus' anatomy is the coat of armored scutes on most of his dorsal side. These have been variously compared to the segmented shells of armadillos, the defensive spines of hedgehogs and porcupines, and the osteoderms of ankylosaurs and crocodiles, but while closest to the latter, most they seem to be of a structure unlike any animal known to man. As opposed to crocodile scutes each being comprised of a single piece of bone with a continuous keratin sheath along with a keeled ridge, each of Anguirus' armor plates is comprised of a bony plate from which a distinct spike juts outwards, the latter being comprised entirely of keratin somewhat like a rhinoceros horn. The keratin comprising the spikes is noticeably durable even relative to the rest of his armor, and grows so quickly that even when a spike is chipped or broken off, it will regrow in a day or two; it grows faster towards the center of each spike, ensuring that it assumes a conical, sharply pointed shape. This rugged armor is vital protection when underground since it is resistant to pressure, extreme heat, and most forms of natural and artificial weaponry. His favorite means of using it actively is to curl up into a ball and roll at high speed, using his spines and body mass in conjunction to smash into the foe like a wrecking ball the size of an apartment complex.
Infrasonic-Powered Horns and Claws:
The function of the brow horns and even his smaller nasal horns are pretty straightforward as both offensive and defensive weapons. Anguirus can impale through the weaker spots of his opponents, inflicting massive critical, if not, fatal damage when the horns puncture an organ or major artery, which could result in massive blood loss or instant death. The damage becomes even worse and more extensive when his horns vibrate at a greater frequency as they could pierce through even the toughest of monsters or Super Robots and the horror doesn't even stop there. When buried into the flesh or electronic wiring mesh of his opponents deep in their bodies, Anguirus' horns can twist and rupture blood vessels, bones, and muscles when they're vibrating to the point they're like spinning drills burrowing into the body. They could even melt the opponent's insides as they heat up after prolonged use of the weaponized infrasonic attack. His hand claws can also vibrate at a frightfully high frequency to the point that they could tear down even the hardest of metals.
Clubbed Tail:
Anguirus' clubbed end of his tail has been observed to pulverize buildings into dust. When it comes to Kaiju, the damage is even worse. Coated in the same mineral-like material as with the rest of his horns and spikes, both the club and its spikes can simultaneously puncture through a thick hide of a Kaiju, rupture blood vessels, and shatter several layers of muscle and bone into a broken bloody mess. If that was not terrifying enough, any kinetic energy opposed against him and absorbed through his electromagnetic shield into his body could be used to power his clubbed swings. Depending on how powerful the opposing strike was, therefore, how much kinetic energy was in that strike, Anguirus could inflict internal damage, not at just one specific body part, but onto the entire body with blood vessels and organs rupturing all over from the shockwave, and even send opponents larger than him flying off their feet, rendering them in a rather precariously critical condition. Only Godzilla's long forearm spikes could withstand such a blow without being shattered as they are infused with inorganic materials similar to Anguirus' spines, which gives them an extra-hard, resilient diamond-like coating that makes his arms very durable as defensive gauntlets of sorts.
Burrower:
While not as skilled at digging as other kaiju more specialized for the job, Anguirus is still accomplished at it due to sporting sturdy front claws and a reinforced skull capable of pushing through most varieties of soil and earth. He most often uses this as part of his defensive technique, hunkering down and partially burying himself so only his spikes are visible, but if need be he can also excavate tunnels to lure his opponents into, keeping the width of these passageways only barely wider than the radius of his tail swings and preventing an advancing foe from dodging them. Like some other fossorial titans, he can also cave in a passageway if sufficiently pressed, his armor allowing him to escape mostly unharmed while his foes find themselves entombed beneath the earth.
(Advanced/Supernatural) Crocodilian Intelligence:
Anguirus' nervous system is similar to that of a crocodilian, both in brain-to-body ratio and intellectual sophistication. He has the intelligence to map out his environment and form a strategy depending on what information he has received, but his actions are largely driven by instinct rather than higher learning. That said, he seems to have an immunity to mind control and psionics of most varieties, the reasons for which are not fully understood. He is capable of communicating intelligently with other kaiju, but something about his mind seems to inexplicably scramble any attempts to hijack his mental processes before they can make any headway. Scientists have tried to rationalize this as a hormone balance that makes him hyper-aggressive and therefore not suggestible, but this has yet to be conclusively proven.
Special Abilities:
Projectile Tail Spines:
While it is easy to underestimate him for lacking any energy-based long-range attacks like other daikaiju, Anguirus has indeed quite a nasty surprise for his opponents that do so. His long, flexible, and heavily muscular tail sports the longest and deadliest spines growing from his skin, made entirely of keratin like a rhinoceros horn like the ones growing on his dorsal armor. Unlike those, however, the tail spines are detachable, with the keratin at the base being more delicate than the rest of each spine, and the spine itself not attached to any osteoderm. If subjected to enough physical stress, the spines break off, the keratin regenerating at an even faster pace than the body spines. An overhead or sideways swing of his tail can also cause them to detach due to sheer inertia, allowing him to hurl volleys of spines like javelins. The length of these spines both causes them to break off more easily and to inflict deep penetration damage as they can punch through non-reinforced plate metal and kaiju hide alike. The spines are biodegradable and leave no lasting damage on the environment even when scattered throughout the battlefield.
Oscillatory Sonic Roar:
This type of biological weaponry requires two biological systems working at the same time to make this work. First of all, like ordinary non-kaiju crocodiles, Anguirus is able to emit infrasonic frequencies that can be transmitted from his entire body, traveling for great distances through the ground as a communication tool, which he is able to weaponize in the form of emitting vibrations at a greater frequency that allows him to transmit them into an opponent via horns and claws with debilitating results. Secondly, his specialized respiratory system resembles that of softshell turtles. They are "pseudo-gills" that are able to extract oxygen from the atmospheric moisture to power his entire body through the softer skin of his throat via minute pores and pump air or water into his throat where there are villi in these specialized structures, which increase the surface area for oxygen absorption. Like the infrasonic frequencies, Anguirus is also able to weaponize it by forcing air out violently through a crop-like organ. This particular organ is located just a little beneath his already specialized and extremely powerful larynx and the two share pathways together, which result in a deafening two-toned "Sonic Roar" as both the higher wailing-like frequencies and the lower booming, alligator-like frequencies go off simultaneously and mix together in an eerily disconcerting, almost melancholic-sounding symphony of destruction. This roar can push enemies back and level several city blocks within a short distance with its sheer concussive force, and also cause long-distance disorientation, hearing loss, and disintegrating damage to infrastructure via shockwaves. Prolonged use of this attack can cause the organism to heat up (can also be initiated if the creature is sufficiently enraged), turning the entire body of Anguirus into a massive, burning fortress of spikes. This will eventually be offset by the super-cooled fluid organs in Anguirus, which begin releasing a substance to prevent overheating of the organism. Sometimes, this process can result in the formation of ice on Anguirus' armor, but this is quickly thawed after excretion of the substance stops.
Electromagnetic Shield:
Anguirus is able to cause the horns and spikes around his head and his carapace body to vibrate thanks to the specialized twitch muscles underneath the base of each horn and spine. They manipulate and transform the electrons and soundwaves into an electromagnetic shield of sorts where the kinetic energy of the opposing force's impact is absorbed and stored into specific parts of the beast's body such as the frill, its forelimbs, the carapace, and the tail club for a more powerful counterattacking strike.
Weaknesses:
No Energy Weapons:
Apart from his tail spines and sonic roar, which are not as strong as most of his other attacks, Anguirus does not have any other ranged abilities, let alone any that are energy-based - if his opponent is protected against his spines and roar, he will not be able to fight them from a distance. He also struggles against opponents who are resistant to physical damage, his main form of attack, having no means of bypassing such protections if he can't find a weak spot to take advantage of.
Weak to Cold:
Like Godzilla, Anguirus does not do well in colder environments. Although not a true ectotherm as modern crocodiles are, his metabolism will still slow to a crawl at low temperatures or even proximity to extreme cold. Ice-based attacks especially are an effective way of deterring or outright stopping him, though if warmed up or thawed out he will become desperate for heat and even more aggressive than usual.
Vulnerable Underbelly:
Unlike modern crocodiles, Anguirus does not have gastralia (belly ribs), presumably to aid in his ability to curl into a ball for added protection, and his ventral hide is pebbly but not as armored as his back. This makes his underside especially vulnerable if his opponent can flip him over, which is also why he struggles against aquatic opponents or fellow burrowers like Baragon - they have no trouble coming at him from below, a direction which he finds all but impossible to guard against.
Stubborn Streak:
Simply put, Anguirus does not know when to quit. This is often advantageous in the heat of battle but if his opponent can outsmart him, they may be able to turn his tenacity against him. Even without mind control, he can still be tricked into rushing headlong into circumstances that are more difficult to get out of than to get in, especially if he ends up facing off against multiple opponents that match him in terms of power. When not overcome by a desire to terminate an adversary, he is patient and open to reason, but once he's set his sights on a foe, he will go through hell or high water to take them down, even if it means plowing through populated regions without a second thought. His tendency to strike first and ask questions later has also cost him on multiple occasions, most often via underestimating what his opponent is capable of. While not averse to cooperating with allies and easy to work with should there be no provocation specifically directed at him, he still has to be held back more often than he is allowed to go all-in, and he knows this all too well. He has a reluctance to face adversaries with a knack for targeting what he values the most such as allies he is particularly attached to, either due to the risk of underestimating these opponents or the ensuing carnage being possibly more devastating than the damage said opponents would have otherwise done if left to their own devices.
Personality and Combat Style:
Anguirus' nature is distinguished by one critical trait: determination. He is feisty and tenacious, with no understanding of even the idea of retreating, and will brazenly challenge kaiju twice his size and many times his power. He is primarily a melee fighter, similar to Godzilla, but the projectile spines he can launch from his tail are also useful as a deterrent and a ranged attack if needed. He is as adept at surface-level combat as most other kaiju, but can also function competently in a fossorial setting, burrowing into the ground to escape danger or surprise foes from below. He is straightforward and brutal in battle, and his strength and agility are immense. While more like a land-dwelling crocodile than anything else in physical appearance, some have compared his attitude to a honey badger - refusing to give up, charging in without fear, and going down swinging until his very last breath.
Roar:
Anguirus' territorial roars would retain most of his classic Showa counterpart's foghorn-like wailing roars whilst having some Elk screams, a horse's snorting snarls, and the bellowing guttural roar of an African Bull Elephant but in a deeper and lower pitch to give a more naturally threatening tone to his roars. Some newly added animal sound effects for the hissing snarls, angry growls, squeals, and grunts that are combined or remixed to match Anguirus' size and personality are as followed: the hissing snarls and low-pitched infrasonic grumbles of the Nile Crocodile and the American Alligator, a few of Rexy's growls from Jurassic Park, wild boar squeals and grunts, and rhinoceros nasal snorts. Anguirus in his usage of the Oscillatory Sonic Roar would sound like his classic Showa roar mixed with Daspletosaurus roars from Dinosaur Planet, but at a much higher volume and greater intensity on a grander and more destructive scale.
