It's less than a chapter, really, and more like a complement to everything else that's from Caroline's Point of View.
5. SHE'S HAPPY, SHE'S KIND.
"Look, about Caroline, no matter what her flaws are, when push comes to shove, you're gonna want that girl on your side."
The thing about Caroline Forbes is that it's easy to take her for what she appears to be at first: a shallow girl, who doesn't really care about how her words hurt others, and is a bit obsessed with having things go her way. As strange as it is to think about it, most times she is actually trying to please the people around her, she is trying to be liked. Stefan remembers he used to be like that, too, once upon a time, when he was young and human.
So you get to know her better, none of those things about her aren't really enough to dislike her, and one has to be an idiot not to see that gaining her friendship is a kind of rare good fortune. He also envies that she continues being this happy, bright person in spite of the recent events in her life.
Everyone believed she wouldn't survive this, becoming a vampire. Her mother would find out, she was going to expose them, it would end very, very badly.
And yet, Caroline has surprised him with how easily she's adapted to her life as a vampire. It turned out that, as always, it was him and Damon bringing problems to others, and it was only because of them that Liz Forbes found out. If it wasn't for Caroline coming to their rescue, they would be dead by now.
"You are my very own vampire coach now. How could I let you die?"
But he knows her decision wasn't an easy one, and it hurt her. Hearing a parent practically say that you are dead to them because of something you had no control over is painful. He knows. He remembers it all too well.
Before this, Stefan has criticized her choice to help Tyler too, mostly because of the danger she was bringing upon herself (and sadly, proved to be a very justified concern), but deep down he admires the lengths she is willing to go in order to help her friends.
He fears she might lose that part of her after this kind of experience. Even if she tells him she's fine, it's very clear she is not, and she is barely holding in her tears.
"I promise you. I will not let anything happen to you."
He's already failed to keep his word, and it leaves a bitter taste in his mouth, knowing that once more she got into trouble because of all the drama that Katherine brought along with her.
Stefan already felt responsible for not doing more to help Caroline when she was human and Damon used her as a plaything, because if he did more then maybe all of this could be avoided. Now, however, it's not just a human girl or one of Elena's friends he's failed to protect. She's his friend, too.
She asks about Lexi again, so he indulges her sharing some of the happier times of that friendship (when he was not a ripper needed to be saved from himself) and somehow Caroline finds the way to be self-deprecating again. How does she really compare to such an awesome best friend?
Sometimes he wonders how someone like her has so little confidence in herself.
When she falls asleep on the couch, and Stefan looks at the clock to realize there really is no sign of the sheriff yet, however, he guesses that might have something to do with it.
He picks Caroline, who's drunk enough that she barely moves in his arms, and takes her to her bedroom.
He promises he'll be a better friend from now on.
