Maddie wasn't exactly sure what time she fell asleep, but when the half-awake, half-asleep 12-year-old woke up at 2:00 am, she suddenly felt a large and heavy lump close up against her body and trapping her like she was being restrained by the scary trees from The Wizard of Oz while also shoving her to the side against the wall to where she didn't have enough space to stretch her arms and legs out in her little twin bed.

For two more minutes, she continued to lay in her bed uncomfortably and tried to fall asleep...but was unsuccessful as she was finally fully awake when she realized that the lump was Evan, and he had brought in Peter Rabbit and Mr. Cuddles. When she sat up, she noticed that he was sweaty and very distressed. He didn't seem to want any space to himself as he only wanted to snuggle up next to Maddie.

From what she could tell, his face looked like there were tears that were once there, drying up and soaking up into the pores of his skin.

After untangling herself from her brother's arms, she gently shook him awake, causing him to stir like a stretching kitten until he eventually woke up and sat up, not wanting to break away from her as he continued to snuggle into her side and clutched Mr. Cuddles and Peter Rabbit.

"Evan, what are you doing here? What's wrong?" She asked the four-year-old in a soothing voice, running her hand through his blonde hair, which was sticking out in every possible direction as if he had been electrified.

"I had a bad dream," he mumbled into Maddie's plaid red pajama top, burying his face in it.

"You had a bad dream?"

"Yes." His face was still submerged into Maddie's shirt.

"Do you want to talk about it?" She suggested, not letting go of Evan.

Finally revealing his face and looking into Maddie's eyes, he continued to hold Peter Rabbit and Mr. Cuddles and just nodded.

"What was your dream about?"

"Aliens! In my closet!" He answered. "They were going to eat me."

"Aliens aren't real," reassured Maddie for the umpteenth time. A while ago when he saw her watching The X-Files (she was really into the show and was growing out of teen shows that her friends still liked), he asked her what was happening to Scully at the moment she had been kidnapped by Duane Barry, and she told him that she believed Scully was probably being abducted by aliens. "It was just a bad dream. Remember, aliens are not real."

"I know," sighed Evan. "But they're still scary."

"I understand," soothed Maddie, hugging her arms around Evan. She knew that he knew scary mythological creatures weren't real, but nightmares were still scary for him, which was why he had climbed into bed with her. However, this twin bed would not do, so she decided to sit on the couch with him and turn on the TV. It was 2:00 - 3:00 am on a Saturday, so it was fine to turn on the TV in the middle of the night. "Would you like to watch some TV to help you fall back asleep." She offered.

Evan nodded, knowing that something funny and entertaining would help him forget about his scary nightmares and soothe him back to sleep to where he could think about sunshine and rainbows instead of monsters.

While Evan was settled on the couch with his pillow, his blanket, Peter Rabbit, and Mr. Cuddles, Maddie was sitting next to him and channel surfing, seeing what was on. However, all that was on right now was news and talk shows - stuff that Evan wasn't interested in. The kid shows wouldn't be coming on until a few hours later.

Therefore, Evan's only options were whatever kid movies they had on VHS - which consisted of Disney movies, a few Don Bluth movies, Pee Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special, Rugrats: Tales from the Crib, Annie, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Free Willy, Barney's Magical Musical Adventure, and a few more.

Evan, of course, chose Barney's Magical Musical Adventure, to which Maddie wished she didn't present as an option. She hated that annoying purple dinosaur, and so did her parents, Heather, and some other kids in her class (some of them were even making up songs about killing Barney). She didn't know why, but she just hated him and couldn't stand that creepy t-rex and was often nauseated by him and his irritating voice as well as BJ and Baby Bop. However, Evan liked it and so did Kyle and apparently other kids around their age.

If it made Evan happy, then that was good enough despite her wishing that he chose Annie or Free Willy instead. So, she slipped the tape into the VCR and then let him enjoy his show. As soon as the video started playing, she went to her room to grab the family walkman and block out the sound of the Barney theme song that was to the tune of "Yankee Doodle".

However, Maddie was glad that he didn't pick An American Tale, which was Daniel's favorite movie. She was afraid she would cry too much when it would make her remember that Daniel died watching this movie.
