Maddie and Evan were at her friend Samantha's house for a sleepover and birthday celebration. This wasn't her first sleepover, but it was going to be the first with Evan tagging along. Because he often joined her and her friends whenever they visited their house, Evan didn't like it whenever his sister would have a sleepover or go hang out with her friends without him no matter how many times she explained to them that both she and them needed their space.
However this time, since Samantha's little sisters - Alexandra and Kayla (who were seven and five) - were joining them, Samantha decided to go ahead and invite Evan as well. She also invited Heather's brother Kyle, but Kyle wanted to hang out with his friends instead. Unlike Kyle, Evan was having trouble making friends at pre-school.
Samantha had also invited Heather and Courtney plus Tori and Kristen, who were on the middle school track team with Maddie and Samantha.
So far since they all had cake and dinner and Samantha opened her presents and when her non-immediate relatives went home, Maddie, Evan, Maddie's five friends, and Samantha's two sisters have made homemade pizza, decorated cupcakes, played board games, and did a talent show while they ate chips, popcorn, and ice cream sundaes with flavors of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, mint chocolate chip, and cookie dough as well as toppings of their own choice of sweets. While Maddie chose a strawberry and vanilla combo with whipped cream, cherries, strawberries, blueberries, cherry syrup, and cookie dough chunks, Evan chose plain old chocolate with whipped cream and chocolate syrup.
Maddie even heard Samantha's father muttering to his wife about all the girls plus Evan being on a sugar high all night.
"Well, it's better than going through the phone book and doing prank calls," shrugged Samantha's mom.
Now, they were braiding each other's hair and painting their nails after being given cosmetology partners.
Samantha was partnered with Kristen, Alexandra was partnered with Heather, Maddie was partnered with Tori, and Evan was partnered with Kayla and Courtney.
While Evan had a blast getting his nails painted with all the colors of the rainbow, he was disappointed that he couldn't get his hair braided because he didn't have enough hair. Fortunately, when it was time to switch roles, Courtney decided to teach him how to braid Kayla's hair, which he enjoyed learning to do because it also gave him something to do if he couldn't get his hair done.
The nine of them continued to talk to each other, enjoying doing each others' hair and nails as a song by The Cranberries played. All of a sudden, Maddie came up with a suggestion, saying it loud enough for everyone to hear.
"Let's give each other makeovers and put on a fashion show!" She stopped braiding Tori's hair for a moment and then jumped up excitedly on her feet.
"Yes, let's do it! That sounds fun!" Tori concurred and then along came the chorus of everyone joining in agreement, even Evan, who was excited about trying make-up given that Maddie always told him to stay out of her flavored lip smackers and mommy told him to stay out of her make-up.
Rebecca, Samantha's older sister who was about to go out with her boyfriend, was nice enough to allow the group of sleepover friends to use her make-up since most of their parents didn't let their 12-year-olds and under 12-year-olds have make-up yet unless it was lip balm.
There weren't a lot of clothes that fit Evan that could be used for the fashion show unless they were Kayla's clothes or costumes, but Evan didn't mind wearing dresses considering the fact that he sometimes copied Maddie by doing things she did, including dressing up the way she did.
While the other girls did their own make-up and chose their own outfits and dressed mostly like pop stars (all of them were getting ready in different places), Maddie helped Evan choose his outfit for the fashion show.
For Maddie's fashion show outfit, she was wearing Samantha's old Catholic school uniform skirt, long knee socks, black dress shoes, and a yellow blazer.
First, she helped him choose a costume from Kayla's costume chest. His options were a Belle dress, a Cinderella dress, a Dorothy costume, and some ballet tutus.
"So, which costume would you like to wear?" Maddie asked playfully as she and Evan rummaged through the costumes.
"I want the Belle dress!" Evan exclaimed, immediately grabbing the yellow dress. He liked the movie Beauty and the Beast, which was why he chose the dress.
"Alright then," chirped Maddie as she helped Evan get the dress on. When it was thoroughly on, he twirled around like a princess.
Then, Maddie did his make-up. She put red lipstick on him, then the blush, then the mascara. He almost looked like a little live porcelain doll. Once the make-up was done, she put the tiara on his head, completing the costume.
"And there we go!"
When Evan glared in the mirror on Kayla's vanity, he happily twirled around in circles. "I'm pretty!"
"Yes, you are," she complimented. "You look just like a princess. But one thing is missing."
"What?" Evan looked at his sister, puzzled as he sat on the little bed.
"You need some shoes!" She chortled as she picked up sparkling red Mary Janes that were a big for Evan's feet. Despite that, she slipped the slippers onto his feet. "Now you're ready for the fashion show!"
Music from Alanis Morissette's recent album of Jagged Little Tapestry was playing as Samantha acted as the host for the fashion show. "And now, the first contestant for our fashion show is Heather! Who is dressed like Madonna."
Heather walked out, did her pose, and then sat back down as if she was on the red carpet before Samantha called out the rest. Alexandra's tie dye dress and flower crown made her look like a hippie. Kayla walked out dressed up as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz minus the ruby slippers (because Evan was using them), the braids, and a Toto prop. Kristen's striped shirt, ripped jeans, short hair, and sunglasses made her look like Kurt Cobain. Courtney walked out looking like Janis Joplin with her feather boa and sunglasses. Tori was dressed like a beach girl.
"Now we have Maddie, who looks like a character from that new movie Clueless!" Samantha announced as Maddie walked out down the fake aisle (which was a scarf) and then did a pose.
Then, it was Evan's turn, and he was feeling very confident about showing off the outfit he was wearing. Before walking out, Maddie shot him a wink and then gave him a thumbs up.
"And finally we have Evan, who is dressed up as Belle!"
Evan beamed as he stumbled down the aisle in the shoes that weren't secure on his feet, waving to everyone on both sides.
"Yay! Good job, Evan!" Maddie and her friends cheered and then hugged Evan followed by a few high fives.
Once the fashion show was over, everyone settled down and put in a kid-friendly movie for them to fall asleep to. After having a blast at this party and enjoying Problem Child, Evan peacefully fell asleep in his sleeping bag right next to Maddie.
