Still don't know why I'm writing this.
It's been about a week since I've moved in and the people in town have more or less gotten used to me. Well, I'd consider the fact that they don't look at me with suspicion or fear anymore as progress.
Niko would visit me often and we would just hang out together, we would talk, or play video games together. I managed to get Niko into TF2 after I conjured them a laptop, that ended up raising multiple question on how I did that, but they eventually brushed it off after I explained my newfound powers to them. They had originally disliked TF2 when they saw all of the bloodshed that happened in games, I awkwardly tried comfort them when they cried for a solid 8 minutes after their first kill.
Some pancakes and a lot of coaxing later, they agreed to play again. They started to like the game after they found out about friendlies and cross team taunts. They ended up religiously playing medic as they could help their team without needing to kill anyone, well not directly at least.
Today's visit however ended up becoming pretty interesting. I was feeling pretty down today due to me thinking about my death, when Niko brought up an interesting question. "If you can already visit worlds like mine, why can't you just go back to your own?"
That caused me to facepalm so hard that a shockwave occurred, smashing the nearby glass, which I quickly repaired.
Damn, I'm fucking stupid.
I was so hung up about the permanence of death, that I didn't even try to bypass it with my new powers.
So, I immediately got to work in creating a door back to my old life. Once it was ready, we both decided that it would be best if Niko stayed and I went through on my own.
The moment I went through things started getting weird. I started to get really excited the moment I realized I was back at my house. My excitement quickly died though, after I realized I was see-through. Some further testing revealed that other people couldn't see me, as my mother just walked right through me. I could slightly influence things though. I could do things that ranged from lifting a cup to lifting a parked car up a bit in the air, though that last one proved to be quite difficult.
Wait a minute… am I what poltergeists are? Are poltergeists just people in the same situation as me?
A thought for later I guess, I had left a note back at my house where I had at least attempted to explain my situation to my family and reassure them that I was doing fine. After that though I decided to see how my friends were doing.
My friends seemed a little down, it's only been a week since my death after all, but they seemed to be moving on from it. That was good to see I guess, I'm happy that they cared and that they're now moving on with their lives.
Now I was just tailing one of my best friends Alex, it's not creepy I swear, and I eventually followed him to his house.
As I watched him sleep, ok maybe it was a little creepy, I decided to test out a new form of communication. I closed my eyes and focused, I could feel my form entering Alex's soul.
In the dream realm…
Alex looked around confused in the pure white landscape, as I was observing him from out of sight. I was pondering on how to best introduce myself when a stroke of brilliance came over me.
As Alex was still trying to get his bearings and figure out where he was, he noticed a door suddenly appear. He then saw the door open and out I came, "I did not hit her it's not true it's bullshit, I did not hit her, I did NOT." I threw a plastic bottle which clattered against the (ground?) before facing Alex.
"Oh hi Alex," Alex stared me dumbfounded not because of my appearance but because he recognized my voice "Zhong?" he questioned. "Yep that's me," I answered, he then quickly backed up. "But you're dead!" he exclaimed, "Yes I'm aware of that," I said walking towards him but he backed away again. "Stop! Don't come any closer!" I decided to oblige his request and stayed a respectable distance away. "Tell me something that only Zhong would know!"
I paused and thought for a second before replying, "In fifth grade you and I bonded over the song Mogolovonio by Sr Pelo." Alex's eyes widened to the size of dinner plates. "It really is you…" he whispered.
"Yeah it is," I confirmed, "Did you miss me?" Alex almost looked offended, "Of course I did you fucking idiot!"
I smiled behind my mask, happy to see he cared. "Cool, because I sure as hell didn't miss you," I joked.
Alex just deadpanned before hugging me. "Fuck you," he mumbled, I just chuckled and returned the hug.
"So, what exactly are you now?" We were now sitting down on the (floor?) of the dream realm, and Alex had began questioning me. "To be honest with you… I have no fucking idea," I answered honestly. "All I know is that I can create shit, but it drains my stamina." Alex thought about it for a second before responding, "So it's like you're playing gmod?"
"Yeah I guess," I answered, "But there seems to be more things I can do," I said gesturing to the door that I came out of."
"Hey, do you want to check out my new house?" I said sounding a little excited. "Sure, it's not like there's much to do here anyways." He said getting up and looking around the dream realm. "Alright then, follow me," I beckoned.
We walked through the door and ended up back at the wheat field surrounding the town. I led him to my house, and we walked in just in time to see Niko make a game-winning push by popping their uber on a demoman, which allowed them to destroy 3 sentry nests and take out a good chunk of the enemy team. My heart swelled with pride at the sight while Alex was in shock at Niko's appearance.
Niko finally noticed us after they won the game and turned to greet us, "Hey Zhong, welcome back." They then turned their attention towards Alex, "Who's he?" They questioned. "Just some crackhead I found on the streets," I answered while grabbing a snack from the fridge.
"Oh, ha ha," Alex responded sounding annoyed, before moving to introduce himself. "Hey, my name is Alex," he said while holding his hand out for Niko to shake. Niko took his hand and shook it enthusiastically, "My name's Niko! You must be one of Zhong's friends from his old life." Alex answered Niko with a nod, "Mhm," he confirmed.
I sat down at the table with them and began digging into a bowl of nachos, my mask seemed to dissipate into a small cloud black smoke, before it was absorbed into my armor. I now had my head on full display as I was shoveling the food in my mouth. Alex just gawked at my skull for a head that was engulfed in a light blue flame before commentating on my appearance, "Jeez, you're still as ugly as I remember," Alex joked. "Hey! that was mean," Niko said while lightly elbowing Alex.
"It's fine," I reassured Niko, "Asian jimmy neutron here is just jealous he doesn't have my dashing good looks." I smirked as Alex just stared at me and gave his rebuttal, "Fuck you, you bald looking headass." I snickered at his comeback while Niko stared at us in astonishment, "How are you guys still friends?" they questioned.
Me and Alex looked at each other before shrugging and responding in unison, "It just works." Niko just deadpanned at us before I began to eat again, "Hey how'd your mask dissipate like that?" Alex asked curiously, "Don't bother trying to get a straight answer," Niko said tiredly. "I've asked them about three times, and they only answer me with them saying 'Nanomachines son!' in a deep voice."
"It's the most straightforward answer that I can give," I responded. "Besides I don't exactly know how they work either," I admitted. "I'm still testing them out," I say as I shifted some nanomachines to turn them into a fork, before chuckling. "I also just wanted to make the reference."
An awkward silence settled over the table, only broken by the crunching noise made by me eating my nachos. "So what now?" Alex questioned me, "What do you mean?" I asked. "Well you brought me here to check out your house so now what?" I scratched the back of my skull in embarrassment, "Yeah, I didn't really plan what to do next," I admitted sheepishly.
I thought for a second before asking Alex, "So… would you like to visit a world?" Alex raised a questioning gaze at me, "That sounds kinda dangerous, besides shouldn't I be waking up soon?" I shrugged and answered his questions, "If you die on one these little excursions you'll just wake up, and don't worry about waking up late as I'm pretty sure when you wake up, only a few minutes will have passed after you fell asleep."
Alex thought for a moment before answering, "Fine, I'm bored so why not?" Niko looked at me expectantly, "Can I come too?" They asked, I shrugged before answering, "Sure let me just grab something for you." I say as I went to my room, I returned holding an amulet in my hand which was smoking. "Here," I said as I dropped it into Niko's hands, they almost dropped it in fear that it would burn their hand, but they stopped once they felt that it was just warm to the touch.
They inspected the amulet, which was a small round lightbulb emitting light even though it wasn't connected to any visible power source. The base of the lightbulb had a string threaded through and had tiny bits of machinery and a small device attached.
"Why isn't this burning my hand?" Niko questioned. "It's just a security measure I installed to make sure no one steals it," I answered.
"Try it on!" I encouraged, Niko obliged and put it on. Their eyes seemed to glow brighter for a second before returning to normal. "Whoa, I feel a little strange," Niko said while blinking. They looked at the amulet, "Does this do anything?" they asked. "Well it contains a miniature version of the respawn machine from tf2, and it also grants you a few powers." Niko stared at the amulet in amazement, before raising a questioning gaze at me. "Wait… what powers?" They questioned as I spawned in a wooden cut-out of the soldier from tf2.
"Ok Niko, I want you to envision this target as the person you hate the most." I said while gesturing to it. Niko put a hand to their chin as they adopted a thinking pose.
An entire minute had passed with them holding the same pose, and with me and Alex standing off to the side awkwardly, before I remembered something.
This was Niko, they were probably incapable of actually hating anyone. I sighed before attempting to make them mad, "Ok how about instead you picture this target as someone who ate your pancakes," Niko's eyes narrowed a bit. "Did they apologize?" they asked, sounding a little angry.
"Nope," I said before adding fuel to the fire, "In fact they're now taunting you for liking pancakes." Niko clenched their fists as electricity began to arc over them. "That's fine," they said with barely contained rage in their voice, "Everyone has different opinions."
"They also said that waffles are superior to pancak-" That ended up being the last straw as yellow lightning sprung forth from Niko's hands and slammed into the cut-out, disintegrating the upper half and setting the lower half on fire.
I blinked as I stood there slightly singed and smoking, while Alex who had wisely hid behind cover as soon as he saw the electricity, took a peek from behind the table. Niko took deep breathes before calming down and looking around guiltily. "I'm really sorry for that outburst," they apologized sheepishly. "Eh, don't worry about it," I said while making a mental note to never piss off Niko.
"Thanks for the gift," they said. "Your welcome, you should probably work on your control though, you wouldn't want to end up stopping someone's heart, do you?" Niko looked aghast at the possibility before I spoke up again, "There's a couple of training dummies out back, you can practice your control there." They nodded still looking a little nervous before making their way to the back yard.
"Now for you…" I said turning to face Alex, "I kinda just came up with this of the top of my head," I opened my hand which was coated with frost, revealing an amulet that was a piece of blue ice with a string threaded through it. Closer inspection revealed that the ice had a mint green snowflake symbol.
"Let me guess, ice powers?" Alex asked raising an eyebrow at me. I nodded, "Ice powers," I confirmed. "You should go test them out as well," I said gesturing to the backyard, only to see Niko give a dummy a tiny shock via poke.
As Alex made his way to the backyard, I began to ponder what I should pack for the trip. Snacks? I checked a magazine pouch on my bulletproof vest to see 3 snickers bars stuffed inside, checkmark on snacks. What about weapons? I guess I'll give Niko a metal baton, Alex can probably make swords and other weapons out of ice, which leaves only me.
I rubbed my chin and put up a thinking pose, when a glint caught my eye. There, propped up against the refrigerator was a sheathed neon blue and purple katana. Pulling the sheath back a little I could see that the blade was black and the edge neon blue. I sheathed the katana before beginning to brainstorm again, one single melee weapon wasn't enough.
A gun would do nicely, but which one should I choose? I pondered this as I opened my gun locker. 'Huh, don't remember putting a 19th century musket in here,' I thought as I grabbed it.
AWAY DOWN SOUTH IN THE LAND OF TRAITORS, RATTLESNAKES AND ALLI-
I dropped the musket in shock, "Holy shit that was loud," I exclaimed as I moved to poke it.
-GATORS
"Am I the only one hearing this?" I thought as I grabbed it to put it back into the locker.
RIGHT AWAY! RIGHT AWAY! COME AWAY! COME AWAY! RIGHT AWAY! RIGHT AWAY! COME AWA-
I let out a breath as finally let go of the musket, the sound was deafening but strangely my ears weren't hurting. "I guess I'll use a different gun, that musket was making me feel extremely patriot when I wasn't even American."
I eventually settled on grabbing a M16a1 and an USP match, both were loaded with rubber bullets, no need to kill anyone on this little excursion.
Alright, checkmark on weapons, what about armor though? I was set, but what about Alex? I'll just give him the watcher knight mask from Hollow Knight, some basic body armor and a toughened hoodie. If it's not enough he can always add more protection by making armor out of ice. And for Niko I'll just armor up their regular clothes, and maybe add the 3 yellow phosphor items from Oneshot for aesthetic value.
I turned to see Alex and Niko walk back inside, Alex looked at the rifle on my back, the katana at my hip and the pistol in my hands. "You look prepared," he stated casually. I just shugged and snapped my fingers giving both Alex and Niko a wardrobe change. Alex checked out his horns in the mirror, while Niko batted at the prophet's feather on their now metal plated hat.
Niko was still checking out the amber on their left bracer when they stumbled trying to catch the baton that I tossed at them. They finally got hold of it and inspected the dice connected to the end of the handle via string. "The baton is made of metal, metal is conductive, and you have the ability electrokinesis, you can do the math." Niko nodded at my words before giving the baton a few experimental swings, some of the swings had electricity trailing behind them.
We were now walking outside, and I was currently twirling my katana around. "That looks a little dangerous," Niko said worriedly as I started slashing the air. "It's fine," I said dismissively as I started slashing at the air.
Shplitch
Thunk
Niko screamed as Alex stared wide eyed, 'What were they so concerned abou- oh.' I stared at my severed hand that was lying there on the grass, I felt my nanobots work to stop the blood loss and I thanked adrenaline for numbing the pain. Niko was panicking but trying to put pressure on the wound, and Alex ran back to the house to supposedly grab a first-aid kit.
"Oh, that reminds me," I said perking up and turning to Niko. "You have another ability that I forgot to mention, and now would be a great time to practice it!" Niko still looked panicked but seemed willing to listen, "W-what is it?" They questioned. "HEALING!" I shouted while throwing my hands (well… hand) up for dramatic effect. Niko just stared at me blankly, before I picked up my severed hand and began giving instructions. "Alright," I said as I pressed the hand to my stump. "Normally I'd just let my increased healing and nanobots take care of this, but your healing will speed up the process immensely." I gestured for Niko to place their hands over the wound, "Ok, now instead of negative emotions, this time I want you to think of positive things and healing."
Niko nodded and closed their eyes; their lightbulb amulet began to glow even brighter. Soon their hands started to emit a soft and comforting glow, a beam of yellow light sprung from their palms and reached out to touch my wound. The wound healed right before my eyes and Niko let out a sigh of relief. I opened and closed my hand, "Alright, looks like everything is working correctly." I confirmed before turning to Niko, "Hey thanks for healing my stupid ass," I said as Niko deadpanned at me and lightly smacked the back of my head. "Your welcome, just be more careful next time," they pleaded. "No promises," I laughed as Niko frowned at me.
Both our heads turned to the sound of rapidly approaching footsteps to see Alex running towards us with a first-aid kit in hand. "Alright don't worry I'm… and you're healed," he paused noticing that my hand was back where it should be. "Yep!" I said cheerily, "Also Niko is now our designated medic to heal us when we do stupid shit!" Niko narrowed their eyes at me before speaking again, "Uh… sure."
Alex nodded, "Ok that's cool, are we all set for the trip then?" I spawned the door to the world we were going to visit and replied with a thumbs up. "Which world are we going to visit?" Niko asked curiously. I smirked behind my mask, "One that Alex recognizes." Alex tilted his head at me, "What do you mean?" He questioned me, "You'll see," I answered cryptically as I stepped through the door. Alex and Niko just looked at each other and shrugged before following me through the door.
Long ago, two races ruled over Earth: HUMANS and MONSTERS.
