Chapter 2
Canine view
Alright, you can do this. Just stand tall, and hope that they don't send me to a death trap.
I straightened my outfit, not leaving a single wrinkle on my shirt. Today was the ceremony; where Inu and Inugami were sent to dangerous missions to prove themselves. It was a suicide mission; many of my peers have never made it back. Today was the day when the decreed my sentence. The more we'll-behaved I was, the more sane mission I received. This was designed to filter out the bad apples of the community, and hopefully fish out strong, polite Doggo in the process. To be completely honest, I thought that the entire idea was cat vomit. Many tales of the ones who survived went on extermination missions to remove Cattos out of the Area, to increase living spaces for Inu.
"Bing Bong Bing Boong!"
That was the the bell. I sprinted down the hall, hoping to arrive before the third bell rang. Many others ran alongside me, desperate to arrive early.
Jump, run. Jump, run. Remember what Father told me. Think quick, stay vigilant, claws first.
A lot was weighing was weighing on my shoulders. As the only child, it was my duty to carry on the pride and family blood on.
Sounds easy enough, if I don't die in the process.
We arrived into the main room, where many of the Court's advisors were seated. A tall, burly man sat at the highest seat, with an array of medals plastered on his coat. That man was the one in charge of the missions, and my father.
"Took you long enough. Take a seat."
All the Doggos present took a seat, fidgeting under his hard stare.
"As you all know, today is the day you'll receive your mission to prove your worthiness. This decides your life afterward, if you make it back alive."
He narrowed his eyes at me in particular.
"Depending on you past behavior, and how serious you've taken this ceremony, you shall be assigned with your life. They will test you based off your wits, strength, and how well you can finish the task in one piece."
All the young Doggos there quietly murmured amongst themselves, nervous about their mission.
"These trusted advisors will decide your fate, so be grateful and take it."
We all split up into multiple groups, where each advisor had our files. Some Doggos were crying, others looked relieved. My anxiety kicked in, nervous to know what I've been assigned to. The Doggo behind me started snickering.
"Hehehehe, wonder what the General's daughter is going to get."
"Bet it's something stupid, like housework.
"Yea, girls are nothing more than housewives, for all I care."
I tensed. I've heard about this plenty. A lot of young Doggos were arrogant and overly confident with themselves. No surprise that they'd pull something off.
"Hey, girl! Go home, while you still can!"
"Shhh! The General is right there!"
They giggled, not noticing my father watching them, with mild interest. His expression said "Do something. Remember what I told you."
Right. Think quick, stay vigilant, claws first.
"What was that?" I said, my voice cool and calm.
"Nothing." He said with an innocent look on his face.
"You sure about that? Maybe think twice before you call me 'housewife'."
"You wanna fight? I'll show what what I'm made of!"
He swung his fist, hoping to knock me out with one punch. I saw though his maneuver, and grabbed his fist, and looked straight into his eyes."
"Dare bother me again, and you won't see the light of day again." I growled.
"Rrrgh, let go of me! Do you know who I am?"
He squirmed, kicking and shoving his way out of my grasp.
I kicked his chin, sending him flying across the room. Many of the advisors looked up, and nearly screamed.
"Who did that?! Inugami-san, what this your doing?!"
The advisor stood up, and came face-to-face. A small bead of sweat welled up, but I didn't let him see that I was breaking down.
"Hey, hey. Move, I saw everything. Let me deal with it."
"S-sir, your daughter just punched a boy! What are you going to do about this?!"
"Silence! I don't want to hear anymore of this, so get back to work!"
Everyone went back to what they were doing, but it was unusually silent, aside from the soft moans of the boy I flung across the room.
"I saw what you did there. I'm impressed." Father spoke, in a whispering tone.
"He was underestimating me, and I hate that." My fists clenched in frustration.
"I know. But once you pass your mission, nobody shall underestimate you. Actually, I'm going to change your mission."
"Wait, what?"
"I hereby decree that this girl, Inugami Korone, shall take on a mission to join the Army's United forces, and soon end the war!" My father's voice bellowed, echoing along the walls.
Me, of all Inu, to join the Union of all Beastman?
I was bewildered; in fact, my father hated contact with other species, but we didn't have much choice now. The war is raging on, and we have lost so many warriors in combat.
I can do this. Just go out there, and give it my all. How hard can it be?
Yaaay, I'm done with Chapter 2! I was really distracted because of Hakui Koyori's debut, but I managed to finish!
