When she wakes up the next morning, Weiss is still pretty tired. But it's not because she had trouble falling asleep because she was thinking about the evening she'd spent with Blake. Or the next day, today, where they would be going to have coffee and she was going to try and be a little closer to her. Nope. That wasn't it. Not at all. Something like that could never keep Weiss Schnee awake at night. She sighs to herself, knowing that's exactly what has caused her lack of sleep.
Even through her very mild exhaustion, she was still feeling the tiniest bit giddy. Which was also a new feeling for Weiss. She considered herself a grown up and mature adult. Far past the age of childish excitement. Not when it came to Blake Belladonna, apparently.
She had checked to make sure her outfit and hair were perfect before she left her house. And again after her lecture. She wanted to send Blake a 'good morning and good luck' text for her exam, but didn't want to seem desperate.
So she decided to spend the time waiting for Blake to finish her exam in the lobby area of the health sciences building where Blake was taking her test. It was a nice building. The architecture reminded her of home. But the decor was clearly geared towards the fields of study found there. It was a nice quiet place she could get ahead on reading for the half hour she would be waiting on Blake. As she nears the end of the chapter she's been reading, Weiss feels her phone vibrate in her pocket but chooses to wait until she's finished reading to check the message.
"Hi there." Her concentration is broken by the sound of someone speaking to her, and she immediately looks up to chastise whom ever disturbed her. But instead she finds Blake standing there, which makes her expression immediately soften. "Sorry. I didn't mean to disturb your study flow. Guess I know why you didn't get my text." The light laughter that follows right after pulls the stress from Weiss' shoulders.
"I'm so sorry. I didn't realize you were waiting for me."
Weiss quickly starts scrambling to put her books away, reaching over the side of her chair for her bag, which flops over and spills most of the contents onto the floor. Blake instantly kneels down in front of the chair and begins to help pick up the various papers and notebooks, slowly handing them to Weiss so she can organize them as she returns them to the bag.
"It's totally okay. I just got out of my class. No rush."
When Weiss looks up, she sees golden amber eyes looking back at her. And it makes the breath hitch in her chest. Once everything is back in her bag, Weiss leans back in the chair and Blake stands back up. She freezes when Blake holds out her hand to help her up. Pulling her bag onto her shoulder, she reaches out and grabs a hold of Blake's hand. She can feel the little callouses on the sides of her index finger and thumb. Most likely from all the writing she does for school. Or the work she does at the hospital.
Blake takes a step back and pulls Weiss up from her sitting position. And much to Weiss' surprise, intertwines their fingers before pulling her in the direction of the door.
"Ready for coffee?" Blake asks, making no mention or gesture towards their now connected hands.
"I wanted to do that." Weiss confesses with a huff, not even realizing that she has said anything out loud.
"Do what?" Deciding it's best to just be truthful and not reserve her pride, Weiss sighs before continuing.
"Hold your hand. And you just did it so easily." She huffs again and looks off to the side as they continue walking. "I lost sleep over trying to come up with a way to do it. And you just…"
"Did I steal your thunder?" Blake interrupts, smirking at Weiss when she catches her eye again.
"Yes. Yes you did."
Suddenly, Blake drops Weiss' hand from her own and stops talking. Weiss isn't sure if she'd done or said something wrong until Blake's expression reassures her.
"So go for it."
"What do you mean?"
"I stole your thunder, though it was by accident, so take it back."
"Right now?" Weiss is unable to hold back the tone of surprise from her voice.
"Whenever you're ready." Blake begins to walk again, matching her pace with Weiss as they make their way to the coffee shop nearby.
Even though her plan had all but fallen through, Weiss still felt a certain comfortability with Blake that she hadn't felt with anyone else before. Like even though things hadn't gone to plan. They were still well past good. Blake's voice breaks her from her concentration once again, not that she minds.
"If it makes you feel any better, I wanted to hold your hand yesterday. But I was too afraid to risk it. I didn't want you to feel uncomfortable." The confession and the light blush on Blake's cheeks makes Weiss smile.
"What changed today?"
"I offered you my hand, and you took it." She shrugs before going on. "I also think you are worth the risk."
"Were you worried that I didn't want to hold your hand?"
"I was. I was worried that if I overstepped, or made you uncomfortable you may not want to go out on another date with me." Blake closes her eyes and then squints one open to glance at Weiss, almost as if bracing for what would happen next.
"Since we are being honest, I wanted to hold your hand yesterday as well. And if you were to, by chance, ask me out on a second date, I would most definitely say yes."
"Yeah?"
"Yes." Weiss nods quickly in confirmation. "And since I asked you to come have coffee with me, I will be paying for your drink. No questions."
"Good to know." She responds before motioning for Weiss to step forward into the line to order first.
After their coffee, they both decide they have nothing left to do on campus for the day, and choose to head home.
Even though she arrives first, Blake is leaning against her car waiting for Weiss when she gets out of her own car.
"Do you like going to fancy dinners?" Blake's arms are crossed over her chest, but her expression is relaxed.
"Depends on why I'm going to a fancy dinner."
"Because I would like to ask you to go to a fancy dinner with me tomorrow night, if you are free."
"I don't typically care for overly fancy things anymore, but if you are going to be there I would be willing to make an exception." She walks closer to Blake and they fall into step beside one another as they walk.
"Or, if you would prefer, we can just go to an average dinner and we can pretend that it's fancy."
"I would love to go to an average dinner with you and pretend it's fancy." She hears the tiniest gasp from Blake when she slides her hand down Blake's forearm before grabbing hold of her hand, lacing their fingers together. "Six o'clock tomorrow?"
"Six o'clock sounds perfect."
Blake walks past her own front door, choosing to continue walking with Weiss and not letting go of the hand in hers. When Weiss turns around to face Blake, all she sees are her sunset colored eyes and that same small, soft smile.
"You have a very nice smile." It only seems to brighten Blake's smile even more. As Blake steps back, the weight tugs lightly on Weiss' hand until they have no choice but to separate.
"Only because you make me smile. So I think that means that everything about you is way nicer than my smile." Rolling her eyes as Blake takes a few more steps towards her own apartment, Weiss feels a little flutter in her chest.
"Flatterer."
"Tomorrow. Six o'clock." Blake turns and looks back in Weiss' direction.
"Yes."
"But I'm going to text you before then." Blake says, as though to reassure Weiss.
"That would be lovely."
"See you later."
Weiss smiles to herself as she closes the door behind herself. Not a bad day at all.
