Even after nearly an hour the frustration of being, yet again, denied their first kiss hadn't left Weiss. It wasn't very late in the evening yet but she was about to start getting ready for bed when her phone vibrates in place beside her. Quickly rolling her eyes out of annoyance and picking it up, she finds a message from Blake.
- I'm so sorry again, about earlier.
~ It's fine.
Was it really though? She knew she shouldn't put pressure on Blake if she wasn't ready. But at the same time, she felt like Blake had expressed definite interest. And Weiss selfishly wanted more.
- No, it's not.
~ Accidents happen. Were you at least able to fix whatever happened?
- Not that it matters, or you would care, but she picked up a weight that was way too heavy at the gym and it slipped. But yes, I got her finger back in its place.
~ Well, at least you were able to fix it.
- Please let me make it up to you :(
~ And how would you plan on doing so?
- If I knocked on the door within the next two minutes, would you answer?
~ I would consider it.
- I'm going to take my chances. See you in a minute.
True to her word, roughly a minute after her last message was received, there is a soft knock on the front door of Weiss' apartment. As soon as she opens the door, she finds Blake wrapping a stethoscope around her neck, leaving it to hang over the front of her shoulders onto her chest.
"Hi." She sounds like she had sprinted the distance between the doors to meet her.
"Hello." Weiss crosses her arms over her chest and leans against the doorframe.
"May I come in?" She can't help but crack a smile and roll her eyes to feign disappointment when she hears the slight desperation in Blake's voice.
"I suppose." Turning on her heels, she leads the way back to the living room and sits down, patting the spot beside her so that Blake knows to sit.
"Weiss, I really am sorry. I feel like I ruined our entire date and I-"
"Blake. Yes, I am a little frustrated and agitated."
"Understandably so."
"But, Yang's finger was literally hanging off to the side in a way that was rather disturbing. So it needed your attention."
"Still…" Weiss knew the puppy dog eyes were coming so she had to stop Blake before she was too weak to do otherwise.
"Still nothing. Can you just explain to me why you felt like you needed to bring that with you?" She points towards the stethoscope around Blake's neck.
"Oh. I wanted you to hear something." She reaches in her pocket and pulls out a tiny packet, tears it open and removes the little alcohol wipe from inside and cleans the pieces of the stethoscope that go into her ears. "Will you put this on for me?"
Weiss doesn't ask any of the many questions that are bouncing around in her head, she just plays along and puts the ear pieces in.
"Okay, now what?" She has no idea how Blake wore this thing often, it was terribly uncomfortable. Blake grabs the other end of the stethoscope and holds it up for Weiss to see.
"May I?" Weiss nods, thankful she chose to wear a button up shirt today. Blake carefully rests her hand over the flat portion of the drum piece and it makes a slight rushing sound in Weiss' ears. "Sorry, it's going to be a little cold."
"The doctors always say that."
A small smile tugs at the corner of Blake's mouth as she places the drum like piece against Weiss' chest, just inside the button line of her shirt. The increased rush of sound startling her at first, but eventually Blake stops sliding the stethoscope.
"Do you hear your heartbeat?" Blake asks, her voice a little lower. When Weiss nods, intently listening to the whooshing sounds filling her ears, she asks another question. "Is it slow? Fast?"
"It's a little fast, yes." It was true. Just sitting this close to Blake was making her heart beat a little faster than normal.
"Pretty cool, right?"
"It's definitely interesting, yes."
"My turn." Blake says, pulling the drum piece from Weiss' chest.
"You want me to listen to your heartbeat too?" Blake nods quickly before pulling her collar to the side and sliding the stethoscope down over her heart. Weiss immediately notices something. "Your heart is beating fast."
"That's because I'm a little nervous."
"Why are you nervous?" Weiss says quietly, still focused on listening to the sound of Blake's gradually increasing heartbeat.
"For the reason I brought the stethoscope."
"Which is?" Weiss looks up, now captivated by the amber eyes in front of her.
"Because I- because I wanted you to be able to hear what my heart sounds like when I kiss you."
Before she's able to say anything, she feels Blake's other hand brush against and hold her cheek gently, leaning forward as their lips touch. The sensation of the kiss on her lips and the sound of Blake's heart beating strongly in her ears was something Weiss had never experienced anything like in her entire life. But it was over just as quickly as it began. She leans forward after she feels Blake pull back, trying to follow. And she feels Blake remove the stethoscope from her ears before she opens her eyes.
"I wish I could've done that earlier." Blake whispers into the small space between them.
"Me too." She reaches out for one of Blake's hands, finding that they are shaking a little. "Still nervous?"
"No." The look on Blake's face is a difficult one to read. "But this is where I have to tell you goodnight for the second time." She places the stethoscope in Weiss' hands and stands up slowly.
"Don't you need this?"
"You can keep it." A small smile tugs at the corner of Blake's mouth.
"Aren't these expensive?" Weiss holds the stethoscope to her chest as she stands up to follow Blake as she walks back toward the door to leave.
"I have a few of them. So just hold on to that one for me?"
"O-Okay." Weiss stands in the doorway and watches Blake make her way down the hall toward her own apartment. "Blake?"
"Mhm?" There's a slightly dazed look in her eyes when she turns to look back at Weiss.
"Thank you. For coming back."
"Thank you for making my heart race. Goodnight, Weiss."
"Goodnight, Blake."
This time when she closes the door, Weiss can't keep the smile off her face. Even when she lays in bed later that night, she can't help but trace the outline of her lips with her fingers, already missing the feeling of Blake's being there. She picks up her phone to send Blake one last message before she falls asleep.
~ I like listening to your heartbeat. And kissing you.
- I wanted to kiss you again, but I just couldn't.
~ Why not? I wouldn't have stopped you.
- Because I knew if I did I would've wanted to just keep kissing you.
~ So now I just get to dream about it instead, huh?
- Kiss you tomorrow?
~ I'll be waiting.
- Sweet dreams.
~ Goodnight, Blake.
