The next few weeks went by like a dream of some kind. A dream that Weiss wishes she never had to wake up from. She had never met, let alone dated, anyone like Blake. She was kind, and thoughtful. She was respectful and genuine. Not to mention extremely nice to look at.
So when Weiss spends countless hours in the library, writing a midterm paper, part of her feels guilty for focusing nearly all of her attention on everything but Blake.
- Library again tonight?
It was still earlier in the day, just before lunch, but Weiss knew Blake was just checking in.
~ Unfortunately, yes. I'm so ready for this midterm to be over. The stress is excessive.
- I know. :( but you're amazing and basically a genius so you're going to do awesome.
~ You're always so sweet.
- Only to you.
~ That's fine with me. I'm heading into class, text me later?
The question was rhetorical and somewhat unnecessary. Blake always text her throughout the day. Even if it was sometimes only one or two words, it never failed to make her smile.
- Okay. Don't forget, I have the night shift tonight so if I don't respond as quickly as usual I'm just working.
~ Maybe I'll see you tomorrow morning?
- I'll bring you breakfast.
The rest of her afternoon was egregious, and awfully slow. First, she grabbed the wrong textbook for her afternoon lecture. So she had to go back home and was late for her first class of the afternoon and had to slink into the back row nearly fifteen minutes late. Then, while she was briskly walking to the next lecture, the bottom of her bag spontaneously ripped out, spilling all of her notes and papers across the sidewalk.
She was so disheveled that she had forgotten that Blake was working the night shift and was probably sleeping, so she ended up texting her to complain about how awful the day was going. And then felt further disheartened by Blake's lack of response.
That night when she finally gives up on studying and working on her midterm papers, Weiss drives home just before midnight. Waiting for her at the front door is a bouquet of flowers, packaged carefully, including a crystal vase. As she places the flowers into the vase on the countertop in her kitchen, she pulls the note that is stuck between the stems out so she can read it.
'Sorry you had such a rough day. Wish I could be there with you. You're amazing and I can't wait to see you in the morning. ~ Blake'
Immediately, she pulls out her phone to send a message to her… girlfriend? It had been a few weeks but they hadn't discussed anything officially.
~ Has anyone ever told you that you're just the best person ever? Because you are. Thank you for the flowers. I missed you today.
Weiss doesn't get to read Blake's response until she wakes up early the next morning. Since it's the weekend, Weiss wakes up and takes a quick shower before Blake would typically get home from the night shift, just before eight. Rushing to the door when she hears a knock, Weiss flings it open to find Blake, clad in her dark colored scrubs, holding a box that likely holds their breakfast.
The smile on her face, while still there, is worn down by exhaustion.
"Good morning. Sleep well?"
Weiss echoes the well wish and nods, pressing a kiss to Blake's cheek and feels Blake wrap an arm around her waist and carefully squeeze her closer against her body before letting go. She steps to the side so Blake can walk past her into the apartment, taking the box of breakfast from her as she passes.
"Sorry, I'm just sleepy I guess. It was a long night. Seemed like I couldn't catch a break whatsoever. Or else I would've answered your text before 4am."
Blake sits down on one of the stools at the breakfast bar in the kitchen and props her head up in the palm of her hand, letting out the huge sigh she'd been holding in.
"What was going on?" Weiss asks as she gets them plates and utensils.
"I'm almost finished with this orthopedics rotation and I was shadowing the on call resident and they made us take every single ortho call and it's just physically a lot of work on top of things like making sure I keep up with good bedside manner and regulating the appropriate amount of pain management and stuff." Weiss looks at her sympathetically as she slides a plate with a bagel on it towards Blake. "But I'm almost finished with this rotation. And this is exactly what I signed up for so I need to stop complaining." She visually shakes it off and looks up at Weiss. "How did the studying go last night? I know you had a rough day yesterday and I'm sorry I wasn't there with you to help."
"If I'm allowed to complain, you are allowed to complain." She shoots Blake a look that settles somewhere between a smile and a smirk.
"Thank you." Blake reaches out and holds onto her hand, slowly running her thumb back and forth over the top of it. They eat breakfast in a comfortable silence, with light banter filling in occasionally.
"Want to watch some tv or something?" Weiss asks, looking back over her shoulder at Blake as she cleans up their dishes. "Or do you want to go home?"
"No. I want to stay with you for a little while if that's okay." Weiss can see the heaviness in Blake's eyes as she leans back in her chair and stretches.
"Let's go sit and you can relax."
Once they settle in beside each other on the couch, Blake leans over and presses a kiss into Weiss' hair before leaning to rest her head on her shoulder. Instinctively, Weiss reaches her arm around Blake's shoulder and begins to run her hand through Blake's hair.
"You're very comfortable." Blake says quietly as Weiss flips through the channels before stopping on some random movie she's never seen.
After about ten minutes, she feels Blake wrap her arms around her waist and snuggle into her side. And a few minutes after that, Blake's breathing becomes slow and rhythmic. Not wanting to disturb her, Weiss continues watching tv for a few hours, letting Blake get the rest she clearly needed.
Eventually, she hears Blake take in a deep breath.
"I fell asleep. I'm sorry."
"Nothing to be sorry for. You're tired. You work hard."
"I know but I don't want to sleep through the time I get to spend with you."
"I understand." She continues running her fingers through Blake's dark hair. "But you should know that it doesn't bother me. It was just as relaxing for me as it was for you."
"Maybe next time we should just take a nap together then."
"I would never pass up the opportunity for a nap. So I will take you up on the offer when it arises."
"No negotiations?" There is a hint of surprise, immediately followed by a smirk on Blake's face that makes Weiss roll her eyes.
"None needed. The offer is way too good to pass up."
"You think so?" Blake sits back up, but keeps her arms wrapped firmly around Weiss' waist, keeping their faces close.
"Mhmm." Leaning forward, Weiss tilts her head up slightly and kisses Blake's forehead.
"Can I ask you something?" Weiss only nods, looking into Blake's eyes. "Is it okay if I tell people you're my girlfriend? Because I mean, I don't know how you feel about it, but I don't have interest in even thinking about trying to be with someone that isn't you. And I'd be proud to be with you, publicly or otherwise. Really I was talking about you with some of the people I work with and I wanted to call you my girlfriend, but I also didn't want to just assume that was something you wanted because it's-"
Even though Blake's rambling was adorable, Weiss was all too excited to let her know how she felt, quickly cutting her off by pulling her in to kiss her deeply. As soon as they part far enough, Weiss whispers against her lips.
"You're too cute and sweet for your own good."
"I take it that's a yes?" Weiss laughs before pressing another quick kiss to her lips.
"Of course it's a yes."
"Can I tell you something else?" There's a little daze in her eyes and the same familiar smile on her face that Weiss can't get enough of.
"Anything." When she whispers the word, Weiss feels like there isn't a more honest truth.
"My girlfriend is beautiful."
