"Weiss, open the door please!" Blake's distressed voice can be heard through the locked and dead bolted front door of her apartment. "Please?"

The desperation can be heard in Blake's voice as Weiss stands, stoic and completely unable to move a few feet behind the door. Weiss can hear a few more of Blake's tearful pleas from the other side of the door. But she is unable to speak. She shouldn't speak. She couldn't decided if she was angry or extremely upset. Or both.

But what she didn't know is that she had told Blake they needed to take a break. And when they started to argue, Weiss let all of it out on Blake. She hadn't even given her a chance to explain herself. She didn't want to. And now she stood alone, behind her door, broken.

Earlier that day…

Today marked the start of the two week countdown to exit exams for Weiss. And Blake had boards the same week. And if everything went accordingly to plan, they would both be graduating in about six weeks. There was going to be a lot of late nights studying. Lots of reading, paper writing, and for Blake, interview preparations.

But for tonight, they were going to have one last dinner together before they buckled down and were strictly studying.

As much as she would like to call it unfortunate, Blake preferred her to not refer to Weiss' interactions with Yang as such. Yet here she was, sitting alone with her while she waited on Blake to finish getting ready.

Weiss hadn't seen or heard much from the neighbor that she wasn't romantically involved with since their last meeting. Which had ended rather abruptly and caused an unintentional rift between Blake and Yang. Blake had told her it wasn't a big deal. But her neighbors have been best friends for years, and she could tell something wasn't going as well as it should be between them.

"Hey. While Blake is getting ready can I talk to you about something?"

Weiss sits up a little straighter in her chair and folds her hands across her lap, putting her phone down.

"What would you like to discuss?"

"You don't have to be all weird about it." Yang quirks an eyebrow as she sits down sideways in the arm chair, lounging with one leg hanging over the chair arm and her back against the other. "I just wanted to get your thoughts on something."

Weiss' face deadpans, instantly running out of patience with Yang.

"Are you going to tell me what it is, or would you like for me to guess?" Yang sighs before swinging her legs forward to sit correctly in the chair.

"I wanted to throw Blake a party after her white coat ceremony. Because ya know, graduating from med school is a pretty big deal and she's made a lot of sacrifices to get this far."

"Of course if you were to do something like that I would be there. And I would love to assist in anyway I can."

"Cool." Like she's found a new wind, Yang sits back in the chair before changing her mind and leaning forward to put her elbows on her knees. "I just know she's felt a little moody about not going ahead with that interview she was offered a while back. So a party might put a little pep back in her step."

Weiss knows she's been busy, but she was still attentive. She was also extremely organized. Not once had Blake mentioned anything to her about an interview of any sort.

"What interview?"

"You know, the one her advisor got for her. She told me about it the day you went home when you said you were sick."

"She never told me about an interview."

"Oh. Well she probably just needed some time to figure out if it was worth it or not."

"What do you mean worth it?"

"Even though it was for her like, dream residency, it wasn't in Vale. I think it was in Vacuo or something." Yang shrugs, clearly no where near as bothered by this information as she is.

"So she just, declined the interview?" Distress and disbelief begin to break through in Weiss' voice as she tries to not seem frantic while questioning Yang.

"Guess so. I asked the other day how it went and she told me that she had changed her mind."

"Why would she do that? To give up her dream opportunity seems borderline insane." She's now fighting the urge to stand up and pace within the room in which they are sitting.

"I mean, Blake has a lot going on. " As she begins to list things, Yang counts them on her fingers. "She has boards, she has classes and the hospital, all the pressure from her family, and then me and you too."

"Sorry to keep you waiting. I just needed to shower so I didn't smell like antiseptic from the hospital all night."

When Weiss looks up to see Blake standing in the hallway opening, she can only stare. Her mouth is hanging open slightly as the anger begins to bubble in her chest.

"You ladies have fun tonight." Yang gets up from her seat, slapping Blake on the shoulder as she walks down the hallway toward her bedroom.

Blake moves across the room, leaning down to kiss Weiss' cheek before grabbing her things and turning her back to her girlfriend.

"Ready to go?"

Standing up slowly, Weiss can feel even more heat swell in her ears and chest as she stands. And there is a hardness to the icy blue eyes looking at Blake that she hasn't ever seen before.

"Is what Yang said true?" Weiss' voice is low as she tries to maintain control of all the emotions swirling inside her body.

"Depends on what exactly it is that Yang said." Blake is clearly unsure as to what she's referring to.

"You gave up the opportunity to interview for your dream residency?" This time, Weiss can't hide the disappointment and disgust from her voice.

Blake wrings her keys in her hand as she tries to figure out the best way to answer Weiss' question.

"Weiss, I-"

"Don't 'Weiss' me." She takes a step towards Blake, her hands clenching already. She feels her fingernails digging into the skin on her palms. "Why didn't you interview?"

"The residency is for a hospital in Vacuo and I didn't-"

Blake immediately stops speaking as soon as she sees Weiss holding up her hand to silence her. Amber eyes are searching wildly for blue ones that won't look up. And when Weiss finally looks up there are tears welling in her eyes and her jaw is clenched.

"You chose me?" Weiss feels a hurricane of emotion in her chest. And she cuts Blake off before she can speak again. "You promised me." This time, Weiss' voice cracks and a single tear falls, and she sees Blake shrink back into herself. "You promised me that you would keep school and your work above all else. And you broke that promise."

She forces her way past Blake, who follows her outside into the open space between their apartments.

"Weiss, please wait-"

"No." When Weiss abruptly spins on her heels to face Blake, she sees her flinch at the tone of her voice. "You don't get to ask anything of me right now."

She fumbles to unlock her front door, fighting back tears as Winter's words from months ago play back in her mind. Brushing off the hand that reaches out for her, she looks up into Blake's eyes.

"I think we need to take a break."

"A break?" She sees Blake's eyes searching her face looking for an answer, or anything.

"I just need you to leave me alone. I can't have you break anymore promises. So yes, a break. Don't call me, text me or speak to me."

"Weiss!" Blake tries to reach out for her one last time, but she closes the door and locks it, cementing the barrier between them.
