Chapter 3: The Farm
James pulled the eighteen wheeler to a stop and Dylan opened the back doors. He smiled as he saw their grandparents coming. "Here come Grandma and Grandpa," he said.
Hearing that, Frisk climbed down from Lisa's lap and ran to the back of the trailer, grinning as she saw the two come around the side of the trailer. "Grandma! Grandpa!" She called out.
Both adults froze before looking to see the child and the older lady was first to react. "Frisk!" She cried out, holding out her arms and running forward, catching the brown-eyed child as she leapt into the loving arms. "Oh, our little munchkin, you're home!"
"Frisk!" The older man cried out, tears in his eyes as he came closer. The child reached out and hugged him too.
"I missed you guys," she said.
"And we missed you, Frisk," the grandmother said.
"No one's ever taking you away again, pumpkin," the grandfather said firmly before he looked up to see the others in the trailer. "Who are these?"
"They're from Mt. Ebbot, Grandpa," Lisa said. "The stories of monsters in the mountain were true."
"I knew they were," the grandmother said with a smile.
"They came with Frisk, Grandma," Dylan said. "They were protecting her when we found them."
James came around the side and Frisk reached for the young man, who chuckled and hugged her, his beard tickling her neck and making her giggle. "When did you grow a beard?" She asked him.
"Last year, actually," he said.
Lisa giggled, fiddling with her long brown hair that was in a French braid, her blue eyes sparkling. Sans looked at her and her brothers, noting the young men had blue eyes and blonde hair. James had a blonde beard while Dylan was clean shaven. The three siblings wore checkered shirts each a different shade of red, blue jeans, and brown work boots with thick soles. Tan cowboy hats were on their heads and gave them the look of true cowboys and a cowgirl.
Their grandparents looked young, maybe around their late fourties. The woman had auburn hair that was in a long braid down her back, blue eyes just like her grandchildren, and wore a flower print dress over cowgirl boots and a purple bandana wrapped around her head. The man had black hair that was short, brown eyes, and wore a checkered shirt that was blue, black jeans, and black work boots.
Lisa turned and smiled at seeing Sans observing them. "Guys, these two are Charles and Cynthia, our grandparents," she said with a smile. "Frisk, do you want to introduce your friends and family?"
The child grinned and introduced the grandparents to the monsters. Warm greetings were exchanged and Charles nodded. "Welcome to Hope's Wings Farm," he said. "And thank you for keeping our little Frisk safe. We were afraid she had been put with a horrible family."
"From what Frisk told us, she was until she came to the mountain," Gaster said.
"We were horrified to hear that she had been abused," Toriel said, feeling protective of the child.
"Toriel took me in and became my mom," Frisk said before looking pensive. "Is...Is that okay?"
Cynthia smiled. "Of course, dear," she said. "Charles and I are your grandparents and we were hoping to find someone we could trust to be your parents if anything happened to us."
"Looks like you found a family that we can trust," Charles said before noticing the groceries. "Lisa. Dylan. James, let's get the groceries and stuff put away while your grandmother shows our new family members around their new home."
"Yes, sir," James and Dylan said together.
"Yes, Grandpa," Lisa said, jumping down from the trailer and smiling at their new friends. "We'll see you guys around."
"Wait," Undyne said, going up to her. "How about I help you guys? It's only fair."
"You sure?" Dylan asked. "Some of this stuff's pretty heavy."
Smirking, Undyne picked up a leather chair with one hand and lifted it over her head. James' eyebrows shot up and he let out an impressed whistle. "Wow," he said.
Lisa giggled. "You're welcome to help out if you want, Undyne," she said.
"I'll help too," Papyrus said.
Cynthia nodded. "The rest of you come with me," she said. "I'll give you a tour."
As most of them followed the older woman, Undyne and Papyrus helped the three young adults and their grandfather put the stuff away, putting the food either in the refrigerators, freezers, underground storage, or other places that were well stocked with food. Undyne whistled in surprise. "Lisa wasn't kidding about you guys being able to go underground if you have to," she said.
"Well, we like to be ready, though it might be a bit extreme, but with the kids' parents being with a bad crowd and then Frisk being taken away from us by a crooked lawyer, it seemed like a good alternative," Charles said.
"Of course," Papyrus said. "To protect your family. I'd do the same for my brothers."
Dylan nodded. "Us too," he said.
James smiled. "And now we've got you guys as our new family members," he said. "It's going to be awesome."
The two monsters smiled, as did Charles as they finished up putting stuff away. Lisa then noticed the time. "Grandpa, I'm going to the horse stalls," she said. "I might be a little late for dinner."
"I'll help you, sis," Dylan said.
"I'll check on the cows then," James said.
"Already done, James," Charles said. "But can you check on the pigs? All the other animals are set, except the cows need milking after dinner."
"Will do, Grandpa," the young man said.
"We'll help you with the milking after dinner, bro," Lisa said before she and Dylan headed for the horse stalls while James headed for the pig pen.
Undyne was curious. "How big is your farm?" She asked.
Charles smiled. "Come see," he said, leading her and Papyrus to a field that oversaw most of the farm. The two monsters gaped as they saw the solar panels, wind turbines, two large gardens, and the stables and pens. It easily would fit five football fields.
"Whoa," the fish woman said in shock.
"It's amazing!" Papyrus said, his eyes wide with wonder.
They saw oxen among the cattle, bees, and ducks too. "This farm's got everything," Charles said with a smile.
"It's awesome!" Undyne said.
Papyrus turned to Charles, suddenly seeming shy. "Mr. Charles?" He asked.
"Yes, Papyrus?" The older man asked.
"Can...Can we help on the farm too?"
Charles chuckled at the young skeleton's shy question. "Of course you can," he said. "We'll have to teach you guys a few things, but if you're willing to help, you're more than welcome to."
"Oh, I'm definitely helping," Undyne said with a grin.
As they headed back for the house, they saw everyone was outside on the porch and smiling, the atmosphere happy. "Grandma says we all can help on the farm!" Frisk said eagerly when she saw her grandfather, aunt, and uncle.
"It will be nice to learn how to farm," Grillby said with a nod.
Lisa smiled, having come out after washing up after cleaning out the horse stalls with Dylan. "We'll make ranchers out of you guys yet," she said with a grin.
Everyone chuckled in amusement before they heard barking and Dylan came around the corner with two Blue Heelers, both dogs bounding over to the group. Lisa stood up fast and gave a short whistle, to which the dogs changed course and came up to her. "Mystic. Shadow. Heel," she said in a firm voice.
Both dogs at once obeyed, sitting at her feet and looking up at her. "Stay," she said firmly before looking over at the monsters, seeing they were unsure of the two. "Sorry about that. These two are Mystic and Shadow. They won't hurt you."
Frisk grinned and went up to the black one. "Hi, Shadow," she said. "Do you remember me?"
Shadow's tail wagged as he leaned towards her and licked her cheek, making her giggle as she petted him before going over to the gray one. "Hi, Mystic," she said.
The dog immediately nudged her hand to be petted and she giggled again. "They didn't forget me," she said in surprise.
"Dogs have a good memory," Lisa said with a smile before seeing some of the monsters come closer. "If you let them get your scent, they'll know you guys are family," she said gently.
Papyrus bravely came forward and was soon laughing as the dogs playfully knocked him down, licking his face and wagging their tails happily. Seeing it was safe, the others came around and the dogs seemed quite happy to get a lot of attention and love.
A bell rang. "Dinnertime!" Came Cynthia's voice.
"Coming, Grandma!" James said as he came around the house. "Come on, guys. We better wash up."
And what a wonderful meal it was as the mood was jovial and everyone told stories, even after dinner as they washed up the dishes and the young adults went outside to milk the cows. Charles and Cynthia sat in the living room with everyone else. "Well, what do you think?" The older woman asked.
"It's a lovely farm you have," Asgore said. "If you're willing to host us, we'd be happy to join you in the farmwork."
"We'll do more than host you, Asgore. You're all family now," Cynthia said with a smile.
A brown cat came out and looked around. Seeing it, Frisk gasped. "Crystal," she said.
Hearing her name, the cat immediately went up to the child and brushed against her outstretched hand, purring happily. "She missed you," Charles said with a smile before they saw the cat make her rounds and deem everyone good people.
"So when do we start on the farm?" Asriel asked curiously.
"Tomorrow at seven sharp," Cynthia said with a smile.
"We'll be ready," Muffet said with a smile.
Peace settled over the house that evening and as everyone was getting ready for bed, Lisa was tucking Frisk in. "We're glad you're back, little Jillaroo," she said, kissing the young girl's forehead affectionately.
"I'm glad to be back and with my whole family," she said, giving her older sibling a cute kiss on the cheek. "Lisa, promise we can all stay?"
"I promise," the older girl said. "No one's going to take you away again nor are they going to take our new family away. We'll never be separated again."
Frisk smiled before yawning and settling down as Lisa began singing softly.
"Warm in your bed,
Pillow under your head,
Stars surround you with love,
Making a stairway to the sky above.
The dream fairy awaits for you,
In her dress of sky blue,
She takes your hand,
And leads you to dream land.
You'll frolic and play,
Safe where you stay,
Until it's time to come back,
To home where love never lacks.
Sleep, my dear, safe and sound,
Where love is all around,
Until the sun comes up in awhile,
And wakes you with a smile."
Lisa saw Frisk was sound asleep and she quietly left the room before turning to see Sans standing nearby and she smiled. "We really can't thank you enough for keeping Frisk safe," she said.
He nodded. "Glad we could," he said. "She's a special kid."
The young adult nodded in agreement. "Goodnight, Sans," she said. "See you in the morning."
"See you in the morning, Lisa," he said, smiling. "Goodnight."
He went to bed himself, his mind on Lisa's brown hair and wondering if she'd wear it down sometime. He bet it would make her look like an angel.
Smiling, he fell sound asleep.
Hmm, I think someone's got a crush. :)
Also, the lullaby Lisa sings is one I made up. :)
