Chapter 4: A Job For Everyone

Lisa heard her alarm go off at quarter to six and she got up, yawning as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes, checking her phone and smiling as she though about the events of the day before. "We're never letting anyone take her away from us again," she said to herself fiercely before she quickly got dressed, deciding to go see if the others were awake.

Going down the hall, she saw Toriel and Asgore come out of their room and they smiled at her. "Good morning, Lisa," said the goat woman.

"Good morning, Toriel. Good morning, Asgore," the young woman said. "I was about to see if the others were awake."

Alphys, Mettaton, and Undyne came out of their rooms, along with Papyrus and Sans, who gave Lisa a smile. She smiled back before looking around. "Hmm, are Grillby, Muffet, and the kids already up? My brothers should be up in a bit."

"I am," said James, coming out of his room. "But Dylan is trying to catch a few more winks of sleep."

"I was," Dylan grumbled as he came out. "Until you threw that cold water balloon on me."

Lisa shook her head, an amused smile on her face. "Boys, come on," she said in a slightly-stern voice. "You know Grandma and Grandpa don't like quarreling in their house and we've got a lot of chores to do today," she said before smiling. "Maybe today is the day the baby animals will be born."

That woke Dylan up more and he nodded. "Oh, yeah," he said with a smile. "I wonder if Grandpa will let me raise a pig for my 4-H stuff."

"I'm sure he will," James said, knowing how much that meant to his brother.

Chara and Asriel came out and they looked eager at hearing about baby animals. Frisk also came out, yawning a bit before she ran over to Lisa, hugging her leg and giggling. Smiling, the young woman picked up her little sister. "Hey, Jillaroo," she said before looking at everyone. "I think Grandma's got breakfast going, so we better go down and see if we can help with anything."

But as they arrived in the kitchen, they found Grillby and Muffet baking and cooking while Cynthia was watching them with a smile before greeting them all. "These two asked if they could help with breakfast and they've been at it since five this morning."

"We don't mind," said Muffet.

Dylan smiled. "Grandma, you did mention you needed help with cooking," he said. "I think Grillby and Muffet would be best to help you."

"He's right," said Sans. "Grillby's an amazing cook and Muffet knows pastries that would let her win first place at a fair."

Both monsters blushed at the praise and Lisa smiled. "I agree with Dylan, Grandma," she said.

"As do I," said Charles, coming in. "Muffet. Grillby. What do you think about your new positions as baker and cook?"

The spider gasped softly before smiling. "I accept," she said.

"As do I," said the fire elemental with a smile.

"It's settled then," said Cynthia. "Now come eat before you all head out to do the chores."

After the hearty breakfast, they all went outside and Charles led them to the barn. "Alright then, I've put together a list of chores and all our names," he said. "Let's begin selecting who does who. If you want to do one of them, let me know."

Undyne was first to look. "Hmm, I can muck out the horse stalls and fill up the horses' feed boxes," she said.

"Lisa, you help her with that," the older man said too.

"Yes, Grandpa," she said.

"I'll get the horses out in the field while you guys grab the tools you need," James said, seeing his name was beside that. "That way, the stalls will be ready for you two to work on."

"Can I help with moving the horses?" Papyrus asked eagerly.

Charles nodded with a smile. "Just remember to not speak too loudly among the horses," he said gently. "They've got excellent hearing." He then turned to his oldest grandson. "Do you think you two could also groom the horses and make sure their hooves are clean?"

"Yes, sir," the young man said with a nod.

Chara was curious. "Could Asriel, Frisk and I feed the ducks and chickens?" She asked.

"You can," Charles said with a nod. "Dylan can show you where the feed is and help you with that."

"Will do, Grandpa," his youngest grandson said.

Frisk then remembered something. "Grandpa, can I help James and Uncle Papyrus with the horses after we feed the ducks and chickens?" She asked.

He smiled. "Ah, Moonstar," he said. "Of course you can."

The child smiled in excitement, which made the others smile. "Alright, I need someone to check on the solar panels and make sure all the other machinery here is running smoothly," the older man said.

"I can do that," Gaster said with a nod.

"I'll help you, bro," said Sans with a nod as well as he was curious about the solar panels and how they functioned.

Charles nodded. "That leaves checking on the pregnant animals to see how they are doing and if they need anything, tending to the gardens, and feeding the oxen and cattle," he said, looking at the list. "Oh, and milking the cows too, but we can all do that one together."

Alphys shyly looked up. "C-Can I ch-check on the pr-pregnant an-animals?" She asked hopefully.

He smiled. "Of course," he said.

"I'll help with that too," said Mettaton.

"I can tend to the flower garden," Asgore said, his eyes shining as he loved growing flowers.

"And I can tend to the vegetable garden," Toriel said with a nod.

Lisa remembered something. "How about the bees, Grandpa?" She asked.

"I checked on them this morning and they're doing good," he said with a nod. "I also checked on the honeycombs we have in the honey shed and so far, so good. We'll be putting the honey in jars soon."

The monsters were curious about that and James smiled. "Like we said, we live off our farm mostly," he said.

Charles nodded. "I'll take care of the cattle and oxen," he said. "After that, we can weed the yard by the house as the weeds are getting up there and feed the dogs and cats too."

"I took care of the dogs and cats this morning, hon," said Cynthia as she came out. "I think those two momma cats are ready to give birth."

Alphys lit up at hearing that, her eyes wide with excitement, making Sans chuckle. "I think you just said the magic words, Cynthia," he said. "Alphys is going to check on the pregnant animals today."

Everyone smiled before Charles cleared his throat. "Alright. Every day, we'll do different chores. This not only teaches everyone about working together, but also how to do new things and keeps one job from being boring," he said.

"I like how that sounds," Undyne said. "Cause I want to learn how to tend to the cattle too and that other stuff."

The others nodded. "Alright then," said the older man. "To the chores everyone."

Everyone dispersed and Lisa led Undyne to the horse shed and they pulled out a couple rakes before smiling. "Ready for your first day at farming?" The young girl asked.

"Ready," said the fish woman.

And what a day it was. The monsters were not only good workers, but worked efficiently and thoroughly as the humans did. By the time lunch time came, the chores were done and Charles was pleased as he surveyed it all. "Looks like all we'll have to do this evening is milk the cows and take care of the cattle," he said.

Frisk, who had reunited with Moonstar and not only groomed her, but even rode her, grinned. "I missed all this," she admitted.

"We'll make sure you're never taken away from here, Frisk," Toriel said with a nod.

"That goes for all of you too," said James to the monsters. "You guys are family now. No one's going to take you away from here. We'll fight for you all."

"That we will," Cynthia said, but she looked a little worried, which Papyrus noticed.

"Miss Cynthia, is everything alright?" He asked.

She smiled, but her eyes were still worried. "I happen to catch something on the police scanner and apparently, that lawyer that took Frisk away is looking for us," she said. "He's trying to convince the police that we kidnapped her."

"That's a load of bull," Sans said with a growl.

Grillby clenched his hands, feeling his fire starting to get out of control. "He better hope he doesn't come in contact with us," he said.

"Grillby, dear," Muffet said, placing a hand on his chest gently.

He took a deep breath, calming down and looking at her with a sheepish smile. "Sorry, my love," he said.

She smiled gently. "I feel the same way," she said.

"We all do," Lisa said. "You guys aren't alone anymore. You've got us."

"And you have us," Asgore said with a nod.

Sans smiled at Lisa, loving how she stood up for them and was protective. He then spotted something and smiled as he saw it was a heart that was colored green, orange, blue, yellow, and gold. A rare combination of kindness, bravery, patience, justice, and truth. He felt his own heart beat faster.

As if sensing eyes on her, Lisa turned and smiled at Sans before Cynthia cleared her throat. "Lunch is on the table," she said. "Let's go eat. Alphys, how were the animals?"

"All good," said the dinosaur. "I think you're right about the cats giving birth. Maybe even tonight."

"That'll be something," said Dylan.

The others all nodded before going in to enjoy lunch. James looked around and smiled as he saw how it was a big family, something he and his siblings had wanted after going to stay with their grandparents.

And now they had it, he swore to himself that no one would ever tear them apart. No matter what they faced.

They'd face it together as a family.

Looks like the monsters are settling in to be ranchers and Sans is falling a bit deeper in love. Could Lisa be falling for him too?

Next up: we get a look at the lawyer who kidnapped Frisk so long ago.
