Chapter 6: Troubling News
Thanksgiving and Christmas had passed and they had been a wonderful time with the whole family together, the peace making them all happy.
If only it could have lasted though.
One month after Christmas, Lisa was tending to the weeds in the garden when Shadow, who had been beside her, suddenly sat up and gave a growl. The girl stood up, knowing Shadow would only do this if someone was approaching. "What is it, boy?" She asked.
He growled again and she looked to see Alphys and Sans coming up to the house. "Guys, someone's coming," she said. "Up the drive."
Sans immediately looked to the driveway and his left eye lit up blue before he nodded. "Alphys, we need to get everyone inside," he said urgently.
Lisa nodded before going up and ringing the bell that usually meant it was time to eat, but if the bell rang hard once and then was rung again, it meant get to the house on the double as something was wrong.
Undyne perked up as she heard it and listened carefully. Hearing the pause and then the ringing resume, she heard Frisk gasp and looked at her. "That means trouble," the child said. "We need to get to the house."
"Come on, punk," the fish woman said, scooping her up and racing for the house.
Papyrus, Gaster, Dylan, and James came running too. "What's up?" Dylan asked.
"Company," Lisa said. "And I don't know if it's friendly."
James looked at their extended family. "All of you guys, get inside and go for the safe area," he said. "Frisk, you go with them."
The child nodded just as Charles came out with his shotgun at his side. Cynthia came out too and motioned them all in. "Dylan, you get inside with the others," Charles said. "Lisa, get ready to activate the defenses."
"Yes, sir," Dylan said.
"Yes, Grandpa," Lisa said.
"James, you better get your gun too, just in case," the older man said.
"Yes, sir," he said, going to get his gun.
Papyrus looked worried. "You guys aren't going to shoot anyone, are you?" He asked.
"If they mean harm to any of us, including you guys, then we'll do what we have to," Charles said.
"Grandpa's right," Lisa said. "But the guns will be a last resort. They are mostly for warning and will hopefully make the trespasser pause and rethink their actions."
Nodding, the tall skeleton went back inside with the others as everyone hunkered down. Frisk clung to Sans, who hugged her comfortingly. "It's going to be okay, baby bones," he said to her.
Chara clung to Asgore, who held her protectively while Asriel stood beside his mother, looking ready to battle anyone who dared to come in and hurt his family. Grillby had his fire ready and Muffet was also ready. They held their breaths as it was so silent, they could hear the gravel crunch under tires as a car approached.
Outside, Charles stood ready with Lisa and James beside him as the car stopped and a lady got out. She was wearing a state trooper's uniform, though her car was unmarked. She nodded as she approached, stopping at the bottom of the porch steps. Charles looked at Lisa and nodded and she nodded back. "Pumpkin dumplings," she said.
The lady smiled. "Pie cherry," she said.
The three relaxed as they recognized who it was. "Hi, Miss Claire," James said. "Sorry for the stiff greeting."
She smiled again. "No worries," she said. "I would have done the same thing." She then sobered. "I wish this was a more pleasant call, but we got word about some truckers helping some monsters out and one attacked the police."
Lisa frowned, realizing the lady was talking about a few months ago. "Who would attack the police?" She asked.
Claire smiled. "They said 'attack', but the cameras showed a different story," she said. "Something about some sort of gas."
She looked at them knowingly and Charles stood taller. "Claire, you know my grandchildren don't use anything like that without good reason," he said.
"I do, Charles, which is why I'm here," she said. "It's about the child, isn't it? She was with the monsters?"
"Yes," James said. "She's alive."
Claire nodded. "The rumors of the monsters having someone help them and of Frisk being back have circulated and that lawyer has been making calls for hitmen," she said. "He feels you all are helping the monsters and have the child."
Lisa's eyes narrowed again. "He's not free again, is he?" She asked.
The lady sighed. "I wish I could say no, but his sneaky lawyer he hired got him out just yesterday," she said. "Don't worry, they don't know where you are or where Frisk is, but I'll tell you...he's bound and determined to get to her. Don't know why though."
"Money," Charles said. "Remember he was getting kickbacks? Well, he's greedy for that money and wants Frisk to get more money."
"If he takes her hostage...," James said.
"It'll mean big trouble," Lisa finished.
Claire nodded. "Be careful, guys," she said before flicking on her radio and smiling. "Well, all looks good. Guess it was just a wild animal scare."
"It was," Charles said, realizing what she was doing. "Just some squirrels causing mischief."
"At least all's good," said James. "Thank you, Ma'am."
"You're welcome. I'll just be on my way," Claire said before walking away and checking into base to say that it had been a false alarm. "All's good. Heading back to headquarters," she said.
"10-4, Claire," said her boss.
As she drove away, Charles let out a sigh of relief. "Claire knows to keep a secret, as does her boss," he said.
Lisa nodded. "Wish the others were on our side like Claire and her boss are," she said.
"They will be once that lawyer gets what's coming to him," James said. "For now, let's sound out the all clear."
Nodding again, Lisa went inside the house and went to the door of the safe area, knocking on it in Morse Code. Moments later, Cynthia opened the door and everyone came out, wondering what had happened. "Gather in the living room," the young woman said. "We've got some news."
Sans took one look at her and knew. "It's about that lawyer, isn't it?" He asked.
She nodded and they went to the living room where Charles told them what Claire had said. "That lawyer is desperate to get to Frisk," he said. "From now on, we'll have to be careful. Lisa, how do our supplies look?"
"Dylan and I took inventory and we're good for a year," she said. "We can hold off going into town."
He nodded. "We need to have enough for two years," he said. "I'll send some orders in and you, Dylan, and James can pick them up tomorrow from the neighbors."
Asgore sensed something to this. "A fortress," he said. "Your neighbors are around us and guarding like a castle."
Charles nodded again. "Friends of the family and many have family members that were my war buddies," he said. "We've dealt with corruption and betrayal before. This is something we're all too familiar with."
Cynthia nodded. "Hopefully this will all blow over and you kids will finally be free," she said.
James looked down. "Not until our birth parents are locked away where they can't reach us," he said.
"And the ones that kidnapped us are locked away for life," said Dylan.
"Along with that lawyer being put back in jail," said Lisa with a sigh. "It may be a while before we can all have a 'normal' life."
"If ever," James said sadly.
Frisk went up to Lisa and hugged her and the older girl hugged her back. "I know, little Jillaroo," she said sympathetically, letting out a sad sigh. "But until the threat is gone...this is how is has to be."
She nodded, sniffling. "At least we're all together," she said. "That's better than facing the storm alone."
Grillby stood up. "She's right," she said. "We will get through this. We can't give up hope."
"He's right," said Muffet, taking a deep breath. "We will win this war, no matter how long it takes."
"That's the spirit," Charles said with a smile. "Now, we best get the rest of the chores done. After dinner, we'll do a family night."
That was met with grins of excitement and everyone took off to finish up the chores, their moods lifted.
But Lisa and Sans looked at each other and nodded. "We'll be extra alert," she said to him.
"That we will," he said before his eyes widened.
Lisa's eyes gave off a brief glow that was yellow and blue, just like his Judge sight. He blinked and her eyes were normal again. At first he thought his eyes were playing tricks on him until he quietly did a check on Lisa after she had turned to talk to her grandfather.
Name: Lisa
Age: 19
Attack: 4
Defense: 20
LV: 1
Main traits: Justice and patience.
Is loyal to her family of both humans and monsters and will do anything to keep them all safe. Won't let Frisk be taken away ever again.
Her defense was strong, though her attack wasn't that high. Still, he decided it could be because of her strong defense since her LV was at 1. But her having the same traits that he used for his judge sight was a bit unsettling as he knew such power could be dangerous.
But at the same time, he knew that Lisa was an ally, one that seemed to make his heart quicken as he watched her. Hands on his shoulders made him jump slightly and he looked to see Gaster was beside him and he looked concerned. "You saw it too?" His older brother whispered to him. "She has justice and patience for her traits."
Sans nodded. "Just like my Judge sight," he said.
"Perhaps it's a sign that you two are destined to be mates, or at least a sign that she won't betray us," he said.
The shorter skeleton nodded quietly, hoping that would be the case.
Ah, so it's revealed why Lisa is so protective of her family. And her eyes glowing? Could it be she can use magic? We shall see.
