Chapter 7: Suspicious
Sans couldn't shake the feeling that something was being hidden. It had been two days since the slight scare with the policewoman and the short skeleton was certain that he was seeing Lisa's eyes glow more than once. It was always brief, but he could still see it. It was bothering him because he hadn't seen her use magic, but could she be able to?
He recalled when Lisa and her brothers had first saved them. The truck had been there, but now that he thought about it, it seemed too convenient. And how they got away...it felt like magic was being used. The farm was large and ready for anything and the neighbors were set up around it like a fortress, as Asgore had pointed out.
The skeleton wrote down all that he had noticed and when he held up the paper after he was done, he didn't like the results.
It pointed to Lisa and her brothers having magic. Charles seemed to be ready for any kind of war and Cynthia seemed alright to go along with it. "Sans?" He heard Undyne ask softly and he turned to find her in the doorway and she looked a bit rattled. "Can we talk?"
He nodded and she stepped in, closing the door. "I can't shake the feeling there's something going on," she admitted. "And I swear I saw James' eyes glow the other day."
The skeleton froze. "Glow?" He asked.
"Yeah," the fish woman said. "His eyes were glowing orange and green."
Sans wrote that down and then looked at her. "I noticed Lisa's eyes glow too," he said. "Blue and yellow."
Undyne's head snapped up at that. "Your Judge sight," she said, horror on her face. "You don't think...Lisa could have that too?"
"Impossible, but yet...I can't shake the feeling that there's something we don't know about our hosts."
A knock came to the door and Sans opened it with his magic, to which Alphys burst in and quickly shut the door behind her, shaking in fear. "Alphys?" Undyne asked, going up and hugging her friend. "What happened? You're shaking like a leaf."
The dinosaur looked at her two friends. "I s-s-saw D-D-Dylan's e-eyes gl-gl-glow," she stammered in fear. "P-P-Purple and r-r-red."
Sans wrote that down and stood up. "That does it," he said. "One human having glowing eyes is a coincidence at best. Two humans having glowing eyes is worrying, but all three siblings having glowing eyes with the traits of patience, justice, bravery, kindness, perseverence, and determination?" He shook his head. "No coincidence. Something's up."
"And the area...Asgore mentioned it was like a fortress," Undyne said, recalling the conversation. "You don't think...our hosts could be...trapping us?"
Alphys shook in fear. "D-D-Did you ch-ch-check th-th-them, S-S-S-Sans?" She asked.
"I did. Lisa's stats are good, save for her defense being a big high along with her attack, but she's protective of her family, both human and monster," he said. "But...I wonder just how protective she is."
"I think we might need to talk to them," Undyne said with a slow nod.
Sans and Alphys both nodded and they headed down to the living room where Frisk was giggling as she was watching a movie. The chores were already done, so everyone was enjoying themselves wherever they were at. The child turned to them as they came in, smiling, but her smile fell a little when she saw her dunkle looking worried and her two aunts looking scared. "Dunkle Sans? Auntie Alphys? Auntie Undyne? What's wrong?" She asked.
Sans looked at her. "Baby bones, how long have you known Lisa and her family?" He asked.
"I lived with them for a year before I was taken away," she said. "Why?"
"Did you ever see things that couldn't be explained? Or see them use magic?"
Frisk fell into thought before shaking her head. "No," she said. "I don't think so." Suddenly, she sat up straighter. "Wait. I think I did once."
The three monsters went up to her and she looked at them. "Grandma was in the kitchen and I was coming up to the kitchen to ask her if I could help and I thought I saw a couple pots floating around. I went to see, but everything was on the table or counter. I asked her if she had seen a couple floating pans and she just chuckled, saying that would be a help in the kitchen."
Undyne bit her lip and looked at Sans. "Cynthia can do magic too?" She asked.
Alphys shook. "W-W-What if th-th-they all c-c-can?" She asked.
Sans looked grimmer. "Frisk, can you get the others and tell them that we need to meet in the living room? This is an emergency." He said.
Little did he know that upstairs, Lisa and her brothers were in a meeting too.
"It's getting harder to hide it," the nineteen-year-old girl said. "I know Sans has seen my eyes glow more than once."
"And Undyne saw my eyes glowing too," James said.
"I think I badly scared Alphys when she saw my eyes glow," Dylan said, sounding ashamed.
"What do Grandma and Grandpa say?" Lisa asked.
"I think Grandpa knows some of them are getting suspicious," James said.
The girl sighed. "Then we really have no choice," she said, standing up. "We have to tell them."
"One of Grandpa's war buddies said that there's been a lot of inquiries in town for us," Dylan said. "I think our enemies are going to close in soon."
The siblings went downstairs and found the monsters and children in the living room. Cynthia and Charles were there too and waved the three in. "Sans called a meeting," Cynthia said.
Lisa felt dread fill her. "What's going on?" She asked.
Frisk stood up. "Lisa...can you use magic?" She asked.
The teenager looked pained, but then waved her hand and the doors and windows all locked on their own. Asriel gasped in shock.
"You're a mage!" He exclaimed.
Chara gasped and the monsters all stood up, but Charles and Cynthia raised their hands and the monsters felt something come around them. They tried to use their powers, but couldn't. "We can't use our powers!" Gaster cried out.
"What's going on?" Papyrus exclaimed.
Frisk looked at her siblings and gasped at seeing their eyes glowing with the main traits they possessed. "This wasn't supposed to happen," Dylan said, his eyes looking sad.
"You weren't supposed to find out," James said.
Frisk felt horror fill her as she looked at Sans. "Dunkle! I had no idea they were mages!" She said, tears in her eyes.
"I know, baby bones," he said. "Because they never told you."
"No, we never did," Lisa said, her face looking sorrowful. "We were hoping you'd never find out and that you'd be safe."
"How are we safe with you?!" Undyne snapped. "You're mages! Mages are evil!"
"They hurt the monsters long ago!" Frisk said.
James sighed. "This is getting us nowhere," he said before he looked at his grandparents, who nodded and they were teleported to the basement, where an invisible cage was set up and though the monsters tried to get out, but their magic wasn't working.
Charles looked at his family. "Come," he said. "We have to be ready."
They nodded and headed out save for Lisa, who turned to look at them, her eyes sad. "It's an invisible power restraint cage," she said. "It dampens your powers until you're released."
Toriel looked furious. "You lied to us!" She snarled.
"No," the teenager girl said. "You don't understand."
"We understand that you weren't upfront with us," Gaster said, looking angry. "Cowards."
Lisa flinched at that. "It's not like that," she insisted. "You wouldn't have come with us if you knew what we were."
Frisk had tears in her eyes. "Mages aren't good people," she said. "I thought you guys were good."
"Frisk, we are," the older girl said, kneeling to the child's height. "You have to understand." She pleaded.
The child looked at her. "No mage is good," she said. "They hurt a lot of people."
Grillby stepped forward and picked up Frisk, holding her as he gave Lisa a firm look, one that made her flinch. Muffet bared her fangs. "How dare you," she snarled.
Lisa looked at them before looking at Frisk and sighing. "Frisk, do the actions of one evil monster make all monsters bad?" She asked.
The child, recalling the evil flower she had met before she had met Toriel and realized the flower was Asriel and saving him, looked at her. "No," she said. "They're not evil."
The girl nodded. "Then why do the actions of some evil mages make all mages evil?"
No one said a word and Lisa sighed sadly. "I'm sorry," she said. "It wasn't supposed to happen like this." She turned away to go before pausing at the door and turning to look back at them. "I'll bring down supper for you guys," she promised before heading upstairs.
Frisk buried her face into the fire elemental's shoulder and cried. "I'm s-sorry," she sobbed out.
"It's not your fault, Frisk," Papyrus said, placing a hand on her back.
Chara looked at her parents. "What do we do?" She asked.
Gaster sighed sadly. "Wait for the end, I suppose," he said.
Sans was quiet as while he couldn't use his magic, his Judge sight apparently hadn't been affected and he had used it on Lisa.
Name: Lisa
Age: 19
Attack: 4
Defense: 20
LV: 1
Main traits: Patience and justice
Is saddened that they were found out. Wishes they could explain, but feels no one will listen, which she does not blame them for.
"Sans?" Grillby asked.
The skeleton looked at them. "Lisa feels guilty," he said. "She wants to explain something, but feels she can't because we won't listen."
"Why should we let her explain her betrayal?" Undyne growled.
Asgore was quiet. "The words she used," he said after a bit. "She asked Frisk if the actions of one evil monster make all monsters evil."
"It doesn't," Chara insisted.
"But then she asked why the actions of the evil mages make all mages evil," he said. "I believe she may be trying to prove that while she and her family are mages, they aren't evil."
Gaster took a deep breath. "Even if that was the case, they've proven we can't trust them," he said.
"There's something else," Sans said, making them look at him. "I don't know what, but I sense a bit more to the magic that they have. It feels really strong, stronger than a mage's magic."
"What's stronger than a mage?" Muffet asked.
"That's what we've got to find out when Lisa comes back, if she keeps her promise."
Frisk didn't say anything, but she was inwardly hoping Lisa would return later.
So the family can use magic, but what is it about the stronger magic Sans senses? Could there be more than just magic that he senses in Lisa and her brothers? Stay tuned to find out. :)
Next chapter: Lisa tells them about how her family has magic.
