Chapter 10: Serious Talks

Cynthia smiled as she served iced tea and lemonade for everyone, a tray of cookies on the coffee table offering many delicious kinds. "As I said earlier, tri-breeds are rare," she said. "The reason being that not many people can hold such DNA inside them. Two humans and two mages, yes, but rarely monster DNA."

Gaster was deep in thought. "But...why do each of them have different monster DNA?" He asked. "If they are from the same parents, they would surely have the same monster DNA in all of them, correct?"

"Correct," Charles said. "If that one monster's DNA is consistent in the family line."

Cynthia smiled. "We traced our history back to before the war," she said. "Many centuries ago. One of my ancestors fell in love with a skeleton monster and they had a child that was half-human and half-monster. The child looked completely human but could use both the magic from both the mother and father. Another ancestor fell in love with a fish monster, which is where Lisa and James get their monster DNA from. It's been passed down for so long, but after the war, mages fell in love with mages or humans, so the genetics became recessive genes. Now, two centuries before the war, some of my ancestors were tri-breeds and there were five of them, but ever since then until Lisa, James, and Dylan were born, there were no more tri-breeds."

"Is that why their folks wanted them so badly?" Sans asked. "Because they are rare and the most powerful?"

"Yes," Charles said. "The monster DNA that Dylan has comes from my side as one of my grandmothers several times removed married a dinosaur monster."

It was quiet for a moment before Asgore looked up. "When did you learn that your grandchildren were tri-breeds?" He asked.

"One day, Lisa overheard an argument with her parents and it upset her to where she tried to stop it. Her hands transformed and she was naturally scared as a result. James used magic for the first time then to protect his sister, his own monster side coming out. Dylan also joined in and that was when their parents kidnapped them to have them be trained by the evil mages," Cynthia said. "Only they didn't know that someone among those evil mages was a plant."

"Who?" Grillby asked.

Charles smiled and looked at Lisa, who nodded and turned to them. "Mrs. Caralen, the one that makes the candy," she said. "As I said before, she's a half-mage and so joined the evil mages in the guise of hoping to gain more magic, but in reality, she and her father, who is one of Grandpa's war buddies, were there to help get me and my brothers away from the evil mages."

"So this whole time...the neighbors knew about you guys being mages?" Asriel asked.

"Yes," James said.

Dylan looked at them. "That's why not one of the neighbors flinched at seeing you guys when they came to help us," he said. "They believed you to be allies, which you are."

Undyne had been quiet and now looked at them. "James, did I really see your eyes glowing?" She asked.

He nodded. "You did," he said. "You see, once you guys began living with us, me and my siblings noticed that our magic was starting to activate if we were near you guys. We tried to hide it, but we knew you guys wouldn't be fooled so easily."

"We were afraid you would turn on us if you knew the truth about us," Dylan said.

Lisa looked down in shame. "So we hid the fact that we were mages, but we didn't do it to deceive you," she said. "We did it because we were trying to protect you all."

"And you didn't want to lose Frisk," Toriel added gently.

They nodded. "It's our fault," Cynthia said sadly. "We asked our grandchildren to not breathe a word of the truth to you."

Sans looked at them all before activating his judge sight. The three tri-breeds and two mages held still as he looked at them. "Were any of your actions real?" He asked.

They knew what he was asking and nodded. "Yes," James said.

"Yes," Dylan said.

"Yes," Lisa said.

"Yes," Charles said.

"Yes," Cynthia said.

Nodding, the skeleton looked at Asgore, who nodded and looked at them. "You have proven to be our allies by your actions, and though you hid the truth from us, you proved you did it with good intentions," he said. "I think it's time we Monsters accept the believe that you mages do: that humans and monsters can live together in peace."

While the mages looked happy, Toriel was quick to notice that the tri-breeds didn't look as happy. Rather, they seemed sad and Lisa stood up before nodding her head. "You guys rest," she said. "My brothers and I will take care of the chores."

With that, she headed outside with her brothers behind her and once the door shut, Muffet spoke up. "They're hurting," she said.

Grillby nodded. "They feel that this changes everything," he said. "That we will see them as dangerous instead of our allies."

Cynthia nodded sadly. "That...and they've fallen hard for their soulmates," she said. "The three of you that saw their eyes glowing when you were close...that means you are their soulmates."

Alphys squeaked in surprise. "M-Me and D-Dylan?" She asked in shock.

Undyne's jaw dropped. "Me and James?" She asked.

Sans didn't say anything, but remembered when he had done a check on Lisa before the battle and saw that there was something she wanted to tell him, but was afraid she wouldn't be alive long enough to tell him. "When I did a check on Lisa before the battle, it showed that she had feelings for me," he said softly.

"Do you have feelings for her, Sans?" Charles asked gently.

The joke-loving skeleton lifted up his head. "I...I'm not sure," he admitted. "I...I do like Lisa, but...," he trailed off and looked away.

"You feel betrayed," Cynthia said softly. "Can't say I blame you."

Gaster placed a hand on his brother's shoulder. "We've all been through a very emotional day," he said. "And a talk like this shouldn't be had when one feels drained and hurt."

"He's right," Charles said with a nod before standing up. "You are all still welcomed to stay here if you wish."

"We will," Toriel decided with a nod. "And Gaster is right. We should continue this discussion when we are not feeling so down."

Undyne stood up. "I'm going to help with the chores," she said. "The exercise will help."

"I'll join you," Papyrus said.

The others helped around the house as the three tri-breeds and two monsters got the chores done quietly. No words were passed between them, but Papyrus picked up on Lisa's sadness. As they were headed to the house, he gently placed a hand on her shoulder, making her stop as the others continued on. "Lisa, may I ask you something?" He asked. "Just this one question and I won't bring up the subject again."

She nodded. "Yes?" She asked.

"Did you have any intentions to hurt my brother's feelings?"

She knew he meant Sans and she looked ashamed before looking back up at him. "No," she said. "That was never my intent, Papyrus. I never meant for any of you to feel hurt or betrayed." She hung her head. "I know a simple 'sorry' can't take back the hurt, but I really am sorry we hid the truth from all of you. You guys didn't deserve that."

Papyrus nodded, satisfied as he could see she was being truthful. "After a good night's sleep, you should talk to my brother," he said. "He'll forgive you, but you must be willing to 'mend the bridge', as I've heard Frisk say."

Lisa smiled at him before looking sad and taking a deep breath. "I'll talk to him tomorrow," she said. "I...I only hope he'll listen and not hate me."

"I'm sure he will listen and I doubt he will ever hate you," the tall skeleton said as they made it to the house and everyone got settled for the night.

Lisa stayed awake a bit longer, tears running down her face as she felt like she had blown her shot to start a relationship with Sans. "He'll never want to be with me, not after this," she said softly before turning over and somehow falling asleep.

In his own room, Sans was looking up at the ceiling after Frisk had talked to him and asked him to at least hear Lisa out and to forgive her. "Forgiving her won't be easy, kid," he said. "But I promise to at least hear her out."

The child had been somewhat satisfied with that and Sans now sighed, turning over and falling asleep too as the others also fell asleep, the tension in the air still noticeable, but slowly starting to ease away.

Looks like the tri-breeds and their soulmates will have a bit to talk about in the morning.
