"That's it. That ties it."
Rosie had been out of earshot for just a few seconds when Mike stood up from the desk and proceeded to pace the small area in undisguised nervousness.
"So, there's some sort of connection between this Daniel, Morris and the house.", Steve added, but remained in his chair, "That could also be the reason they went in and gutted the house and put it up for sale again already."
"And it's the same reason he's been giving us the cold shoulder since the beginning of this investigation and continues to block our efforts."
"But we don't have any concrete proof besides this connection. So how do you want to proceed in the meantime? It's not like we're in San Francisco. If anything, we're painfully outnumbered. There's no telling what else Morris will come up with to try to stop us."
"Yeah, I know…", Mike said, unable to hide the frustration and disappointment from his voice, "I am pushing it already getting a lab crew down here. Once Olsen finds out about the car, he's going to ask some questions I may not have a good answer to."
They fell quiet for many long moments, each man pondering the peculiar predicament they had found themselves in. After a while, Mike cleared his throat again, the hand holding the deed clenching it tightly.
"Let's keep going for today. Bernie said his crew could be down here by 7pm. Let's show them the murder scene so they can work it throughout the night and into the morning. That buys us some time to take a closer look at this Daniel Mears, see if he has a motive. Who knows, that might just get Morris worked up enough to make some mistakes."
