The thing about spotting weaknesses was that no one had the same weaknesses as another person.
The good thing, it made it easy to spot people running from her in disguises. The bad thing?
Was standing right in front of her.
Growing up with the Symbol of Peace actually upholding the peace of the nation was great but once she realized how much he had weakened to the point of actually having a bright spot glowing in her vision which meant he would die from a strong and precise blow there?
She was terrified for him and terrified for their nation's future.
"A-All-" Ah, apparently she wasn't the only one who knew aside from probably a few trusted people in All Might's side. There was no way he had survived that one alone.
Midoriya cut himself off before he could utter anything more. But from the deer-in-headlights look on his face any doubt she had before was cleared immediately.
"I'm sorry, Sir, but I want this young man to get checked out by the medics again. I'm not sure they examined his health correctly in the heat of the moment. His lungs do not seem to be fully functional," she interjected, not about to let the Symbol of Peace strain himself by prolonging his stay outside when he should be clearly resting with his injuries glowing even brighter in her vision and not letting Midoriya get away without getting another check-up when she could use her rank to bully the professionals to do their job if they were treating him unfairly due to his quirkless status.
She trusted their behavior to be professional most of the time. But she had seen it too many times that some people would be more careless in face of a quirkless person or even a more differently looking person with a mutant quirk.
"Woah, Spots, you're really amazing for seeing all of that. Is your quirk completely visual? Do you just get the locations of the weakness? Or is there also information provided along with the visual cue? Is your hero name implying the nature of how you see the actual weaknesses? I-" He cut himself off again looking embarrassed for being caught mumbling between two heroes and silently berating himself. She tried to stop him from destroying his self-esteem any further.
"You're sure some enthuastic kid. How about you get to the medics, I will explain my quirk in some detail to you now, but how about we exchange contacts and then meet up sometime to discuss more? I'm more of a underground hero than a spotlight one and it's better for me not to have that information running out and about. You gotta keep a secret for me, Midoriya-kun." Despite not quite sure how to proceed with this situation, Spots threw a meaningful glance towards the number one hero and his stomach, brightly glowing in her vision, the man still looking awkwardly between them. Her gaze didn't go unnoticed.
Spots had implied to him before that she knew more about his health than the general public but had never been as bold as she had been now. The other hero seemed to be resigned about the fact that Spots knew, given that he probably had gotten across the subtle hints she had been given him whenever we interacted. It was often enough, since she was often on call during large scale disasters to access structural damage, having to relay that information to all the heroes going into that situation. Given from the bright spots on the man's person, which always seemed to grow increasingly stronger the longer he spent in his buff form and the appearance of his secretary after All Might's entrances and subsequent disapperances, who had all the same weaknesses, she was able to guess what was going on.
The number one hero gave her a defeated nod, his eyes giving her the message that they still had to talk about their unspoken conversation. Then he steeled himself, dismissing that problem for the actual reason he came towards the duo.
"Midoriya-shounen!" All Might focused on the teen instead of her. "About your question from before. I was wrong, you can be a hero!"
And huh, that were some impressive waterworks. She had to hold the teen up to prevent him from crashing from all his sobbing.
Spots threw All Might a look. What the had he done? Given the situation it implied the number one hero having denied Midoriya the possibility for being a hero. It was glaringly obvious why but she wouldn't have pegged the man to be so biased towards people, when he was literally the Symbol of Peace.
Unfortunately for both of them, All Might didn't have any better idea what to do which meant the two adults were trying uselessly to comfort the crying teen. It was just good for all of them, that the alley was abandoned.
Sighing, Spots gave up on the plan to get him to the medics once again. His lungs didn't seem to be too weak yet to develop pneumonia, but she would definitely try to get him to the hospital at the end of this. Now it was far more important to stabilize his mental wellbeing.
Well, All Might better have a good reason prepared for her because she was surely not budging.
"All Might, I'm all for training Midoriya-kun to be a hero but why exactly did you think, yes that kid ran into danger, that's so heroic, I want to train him?" She felt Midoriya perking up and slumping at the same time with her question, but she wanted to know what exactly motivated the Symbol of Peace, especially when she suspected something more behind his motivation.
"Every hero has that moment where they can't control their body and they just acted to save a life. Midoriya-shounen, I saw that in you and your potential to be a hero," the gaunt man answered earnestly. He seemed convinced that the teen was the right one.
"I can't exactly disagree with that one, but what Midoriya-kun did was also reckless, quirk or no quirk. Being a hero is a lot more than just a heroic spirit. Are you willing to bear the responsibility of the lifes in your hand and also take responsibility of your own life, Midoriya-kun?" She looked into the eyes of the young man, utterly serious and not willing to let him get away without answering.
Sensing her somber mood, Midoriya took a moment to think and stare back at her.
"...Yes, I believe that I can." He nodded resolutely.
"All right, I'm in." Two bewildered faces stared back at her.
"What? Did you two expect me to stay quiet and not do anything once I heard about this situation?" And from both their expressions that had been the case.
"Given Midoriya-kun's quirklessness it's appropriate that I, someone who has to fight with no special physical abilities, will help him his training and give him tips for fighting. I was already going to talk to him about my quirk and I might as well help him spot weaknesses naturally."
Midoriya's eyes were already starting to tear up again. Oh for God's sake, was his quirk actually turning into a damn water fountain?
"Damn, kid, stop crying. If you hadn't told me your were quirkless, I would have already thought your tear ducts are a quirk themselves." The teen rubbed his eyes to prevent them from leaking anymore. He gave her a weak smile in response.
"It's a family thing. My mom is the same." She smiled at the the thought of son and mother crying a river at the same time.
"All right, thank you, Spots. That's a very heroic thing of you. How about we all exchange contact information now and think about the best time and place to meet up? I have an idea but maybe you both would like to voice your opinion first," the Symbol of Peace propositioned.
"Well, I like to patrol during night shifts or in the evenings, though the former is more likely. If you need a training place, I have a studio that I use regularly. Equipment is in there and you spar there fairly well."
"I have school in the morning until afternoon. My weekends are completely free," Midoriya admitted rather quietly. She had the feeling that he was both still in shock about what was happening sad at the same time that he could admit to such a thing.
"Good, my timetable is rather flexible. I told Midoriya-shounen already, Spots, but my time in my "All Might"-form has been reduced to 3 hours nowadays." Her eyebrows shot up at this piece of knowledge. That was surprising. "I was going to have Midoriya-shounen train mostly on Dagoba Beach for strength training and anything more technical in my studio."
Midoriya looked starstruck at the thought of using his idol's place.
"Huh? At that dumpster? Haven't people been using that place as a place to discard their trash?"
"I was going to have you clean the beach, Midoriya-shounen," All Might addressed the teen. Spots' brows furrowed. That was an interesting idea.
"If you want to do that, you definitely need me there. The structural integrity of those trash towers are a nightmare."
Apparently her casually mentioning her quirk spurred Midoriya's brain into action again.
"Can you spot the weakness of everything, Spots? What is the definition of weakness by your quirk? Would things only have to lose their current form or just loose part of their inner energy? Have you ever measured how weak a weakness seems by the visual cue you get?" The questions just sprang out of his mouth, making her head spin trying to answer every single one.
"Woah slow down, Midoriya-kun. Let's really discuss that after a training session. I really want you to get checked over. But yeah I see weaknesses in about everything. But I can tone it down depending on my concentration level. The definition of weakness is a lot more complicated than I can give you in this short time but it's more about direct weaknesses. I won't know if a quirk is particularly weak to something if it's a psychological yeah I did some testing with my quirk." She held up her hand, while spewing out some answer, which did nothing to deter the teen's inquisivness. If anything he got more excited about it.
"All right, I see you two get along well when it comes to quirk metaphysics. That's great. Let's meet up on Saturday morning at my studio. We'll start assessing Midoriya-shounen's abilities and then plan a training schedule. How does 9 AM sound?" He gave her a look that said, come earlier. Urgh, she was not looking forward towards waking up earlier than she had to.
The two gave their approval of the plan, before Spots grabbed Midoriya's shoulder before he could bounce off.
"Midoriya-kun, stop trying to run off. I was serious about that medic."
She received wide doe-eyes with a resigned look behind them that wasn't expecting anything from her attempt to get him checked out by professionals. She sighed frustratedly.
"You know, if you get checked out, we can discuss quirks afterwards. Mine and anything interesting you want to talk about," Spots offered desperately.
The effect was gradual, despite her best efforts. She could see him battling with himself. His fear of being discriminated against for his quirklessness and the desire to use that brain of his to dissect more of her quirk.
She knew which would win out eventually.
At least she could rest easy that he was probably just gonna end up with a cough the rest of the week.
A little plot bunny that I have. I just felt like giving Midoriya someone to geek with. And you can't forget about Dad Might.
