During the month after their defeat of Urizen, Hara remained silent and withdrew from involving herself with the discussions about what to do with the issue at hand. Only remaining close to V as they tried to gather enough power to survive and overthrow the current predicaments.
As V brewed silently over their defeat, a defeat that horrified him deeply considering how easily they lost to his demon half. Shocked at how strong his demon half had been and how effortlessly they were defeated without so much as wounding Urizen. On the other hand V had soon noticed Hara's lack of responses even as Griffon made a few jabs about her being sulky over their loss. To their surprise, she had not responded like she usually would nor did she comment about the nickname he would give her thanks to the colour of her fur. Instead would just shrug off the comments in an absentminded manner leaving Griffon perplexed enough to go silent, something that had V feeling mixed emotions since the pair would often go hot and cold depending on the situation.
At times V and Griffon had tried to figure out what was bothering her only to be pushed away slightly, under the reason that she was okay and was pondering about things she refused to talk about, just going through a few things that were bothering her. To their worry she had said she didn't want their help on it. Something that bothered V deeply since she would still comfort and remain close to him but this time it felt robotic- hollow as opposed to what she would usually do when he was feeling down. Not that he would admit this aloud since he would often keep his emotions guarded at all times. Except had accidently let his guard down only to either his familiars or at times Hara.
On the other hand, V began to feel more healthier than usual as the days went by. Active and less on the verge of falling apart which confused if not surprised him. His mind hardly went to the voice that he met in limbo but had a suspicion that the voice had done something, whatever the consequences for this however didn't appear to have happened yet leaving him curious. Surely there was always a catch to things like this, even his birth is unnatural so why was it taking so long to show?
Part of him wanted to thank the voice but didn't know how to contact it, surely it would appear once again right? So until then, he remained on guard.
"You don't look so good" Griffon commented softly to Hara who had slumped against Shadow after they took down a few demons. Shadow hearing this gave what looked like a raised brow at the avian for pointing out such a thing and when they were in the middle of a fight. The last thing they needed was to be distracted.
"So what's got you thinking so much? You've been quiet for a month Whitey!" he added while landing beside the pair. V as he watched closed his book and held it tightly as a thought came to him slowly, at that moment he was sure to have spotted a small line appear on Hara's right cheek despite having it slightly concealed by fur. Just seeing this little sign left him baffled at why such a thing would occur and yet, she appeared normal. Almost as if nothing was wrong with her.
"Whitey!" Griffon yelled snapping Hara out of her musing as Nero approached the pair after finishing his rounds. Nodding at V in a form of greetings he stopped near the panther to hear what was going on. Even he was a little troubled by what was going on since the fox had shown signs of being abnormal. Yes it wasn't a demon, but it was a telepathic fox? Surely there was more to this, more than what she was letting on.
"You were saying something?" Hara asked calmly causing Griffon to groan and shake his head as a sigh left his beak.
"You've been out of it for a while, what's going on with you?" Griffon said sharply as Shadow nuzzled Hara slightly in hopes of comforting the troubled fox, looking up Hara stared at the panther with saddened eyes.
"Sorry, was just thinking about what I saw back at the tree" Hara said as she went towards V and looked at him, mindful of Nero who was next to V now.
"Finally willing to talk, eh?" Griffon said causing her to look at him briefly, not amused by the comment but knew he was worried about her. Even if he wasn't being truly open about it. She did not complain.
"Considering how you don't know when to shut up, are you really one to talk?" Nero scolded earning him a tsk from the avian who narrowed his eyes angrily, almost prepared to retort until they heard Hara talk softly.
"I was… it's just a first seeing someone like Urizen. It's a real cause for concern if what I saw and felt is correct" Hara explained surprising the group. Picking her up with one arm, V observed her brooding look which left a sinking suspicion that something was wrong if it was troubling her this much.
"What does that mean? Was there something wrong with the demon?" Nero asked as he folded his arms and leaned against rubble to his left. Pursing her lips slightly Hara's eyes dimmed from what she was now trying to understand.
"Well? Out with it! Don't leave us all in suspense here!" Griffon huffed earning him a warning growl from Shadow. Gathering her thoughts, Hara looked down.
"Hey, knock it off! It must be bad if she's having trouble talking about it" Nero scolded as he tried to gage what she was thinking, at times it was hard to know what she was up to given how quiet she was. Not that he cared about the demon, if anything revenge still sang in his blood for what had happened back at the garage. On the other hand, if it was something troubling Hara then it must be a problem that they needed to know.
V meanwhile immediately grew nervous from what he was about to hear, especially with the Nero around since the boy had no idea about who he was and his connection to the demon. His stomach continued to plummet as he tried to anticipate what she was about to say.
"There's something wrong with Urizen" Hara finally admitted as she looked up at V with troubled eyes. V seeing this felt his stomach twist as the uncomfortable feeling ebbed at his chest. Nero hearing this frowned in thought, what did she mean by that?
"What's that suppose to bloody mean?" Griffon asked before V could speak, sighing Hara kept looking at V, silently asking for his permission to speak. Startled, V paused before nodding slowly allowing her to explain what was bothering her.
"Urizen has no memories of who he is, what he is. All he knows is that he's a demon who craves power but does not know why" Hara explained in a grave tone. Nero's brows furrowed in thought.
"That's bizarre even for a demon, surely most crave power anyways right?" Nero asked earning him what looked like a raised brow from Hara.
"From my line of work- not always. What I mean is he doesn't understand anything. His mind and emotions don't process the same way we do. He doesn't know what joy, anger, sorrow, fear, or any emotions like we do. It's like he's an empty shell in regards to feelings and wants. All he felt when he saw Dante was see a complete stranger, his body might recognise him but his mind only sees is a threat to him. So he attacked in retaliation. His mind overall is like swish cheese, it's a complete mess" Hara explained, now feeling V tense up as he held her in his arms.
"That's messed up!" Nero said looking worried "what caused him to act like that? Not that I care, since he did do this to me" Nero showed his stump leaving them feeling heavy hearted. V knowing the answer bit the inside of his cheek now knowing what Hara meant, why she had been quiet for a while.
"I wish I knew Nero, I truly do but I am unsure if he can be fixed. It could be doable, but it'll take time. Right now all he knows is he needs power to survive but doesn't know why he wants it so much. It's like being born but with a lack of the important things that helps us develop or live. He has intelligence yes but only it's limited" Hara explained.
"Isn't there a way to fix that?" Griffon asked as V remained silent. Hara while she was staring at V sighed feeling conflicted.
"I'm not one hundred percent sure, these ideas are all just theories but what I saw is definitely not a theory" Hara replied now nuzzling V's arm to comfort him.
"Then all we need to do is stop him before he hurts anyone else" Nero said before spotting Nico's van in the distance. "Never thought I'd say this but I'm glad you're an empath" he said earning him a slight chuckle from Hara.
"All the good it does and I can't do anything much with it. Maybe I should go see him, see what I can do to-"
"Absolutely not! You are not putting yourself in danger just for a theory" V reprimanded sharply Hara to her shock. Nero paused from seeing the fury forming on V's face.
"What's got him upset?" Nero said before shaking his head, heading into the van he spotted Lady and Nico talking.
"V we don't know what he's truly thinking right now, he's a mess! We should help him somehow" Hara explained, to her surprise V hugged her tightly to his chest. His frame trembled from the thought of her going after his demon half alone. Knowing she would not last a minute with how unstable his demon half was now they knew what was at stake.
"You are not putting yourself in danger over a theory" V repeated shortly as emotions continued to overwhelm him, memories of his mother's screams filled his ears leaving V hugging her more closely to his chest.
"I'm not losing you as well" V gritted his teeth but kept his mouth tightly closed, fear filled his mind over what Urizen would do. The things he could do since Hara would not be able to defend herself. In the end she was a small fox who as much as he appreciated her comforting him at times he truly needed it, would not last five minutes with his demon half. There was no evidence to support that Urizen would leave her undamaged, anything could happen and from what she had revealed only proved how mindless his demon side was.
Hara however nudged him in a comforting manner from hearing his thoughts sighed. Knowing that he could not take losing someone that he was close to him again. It would more likely break him, not that she was going to let that happen. Unfortunately she had to keep her façade up otherwise it would just sprout a lot of unwanted questions. Questions she refused to introduce or else it would lead to unsavoury results.
Knowing that she had already revealed more than she should have about herself. It wasn't that she shouldn't trust them, but she worried about the effects it would have on time and space itself with how much she was interfering.
As she brewed silently V's grip tightened while a sudden rush of emotions appeared troubling him. Fear and sadness being one of the emotions. The most important emotion he felt was guilt, a feeling that ebbed more than it should within his weakened heart. Yes, he was guilty about what was going on but something else was eating at him. Something that didn't correlate with him enough to warrant such a feelings to eat away at him. Just these feelings left him perplexed until Griffon flew beside them.
"We should get going, there's no point hanging around here like idiots" Griffon muttered as he went into V's tattoos. Another thing that bothered V as he noticed the sudden change of mood coming from the avian. Was he becoming too sensitive or was something going on that he was not aware of?
Why did he feel as if something bad was about to happen?
"We should get going" Hara agreed softly as she relaxed in his arms. Silently keeping an eye on the area with her powers.
After regrouping and discussing what to do next, V travelled to the west side in order to find more roots to sever. Hara meanwhile remained on his shoulders in hopes of spotting anything bad nearby. At the same time worry for what they would find nibbled at her mind. There had to be some survivors right? So how is it that they were unable to find them?
As they travelled past a street V paused to see the damage the roots had done. Three buildings had toppled and landed on top of the other in a hazardous manner, shards of glass and blood stained various parts of the buildings while tubes of metal pipes jutted out leaving the group to grimace as the area around it looked as if someone had tried to mesh the buildings together but failed badly. Hearing some creaking from various parts of the buildings alerted them that it was not safe to be near either part of the ruins.
"That is one unsteady staircase" Griffon commented as they noticed various holes and torn metal from each building. At worst, if they were to think of climbing it to the taller building behind it, they would either fall or risk the collapse of the buildings altogether.
"Let's take another route" Hara said feeling a sense of unease from what they were seeing.
"I hate to agree, but she's right. That does not look safe V we should look for another route" Griffon said while landing on V's shoulders.
"We don't have time and this is the only route available for us to take" Griffon grumbled from V's response.
"We don't have the energy to fly over that V, let's just take our chances and go find another path" hearing this V smirked wryly.
"Don't tell me you are scared" V said as the pair frowned at him.
"I want to live" Hara said sharply as she gave him a sharp look in return, his brows shot up in surprise.
"I am not built to carry you long distances" Griffon said shortly as he flew off V's shoulders "come on let's find another route" sighing V followed Griffon who had eventually found another route to Hara's relief. As they travelled Hara soon gained a sense that they were not alone leaving her fur to bristle once they arrived in a town square filled with husks. Most of the buildings contained smashed windows and a located in the center was an empty fountain. Eyeing the husks with sadness Hara nuzzled V's arms in comfort as his guilt and disgust started to form once again.
"Careful we might have company" Hara said low enough for the pair to hear. Eyes narrowing V nodded slowly only to pause as a suit of armour riding a horse greeted their line of sight.
"What is-?" Griffon went quiet as V covered his mouth. As they listened they quickly heard the words Sparda leaving V stunned.
"Find the sword of Sparda, it must be destroyed before it can be used against us!" the voice behind the building said in a soothing yet scathing tone that sent shivers down Hara's spine.
Peeking round the corner Hara spotted three women with long black hair attached to a defeathered chick, her mouth dropped in shock and disgust at how this could be a thing.
"What the…?" Hara soon paused as she noticed the entity covered in a suit of armour contained a small pause of energy that reminded her of a person she met. Blinking she closed her eyes and channelled some energy to see past the armour causing her to almost yelp in surprise.
"Are you flippin kidding me?!" Hara almost screamed as the three headed demon left. Pressing her lips together she soon watched V walk past her to face the suit of armour.
"I see who you are, but don't worry. I'll be gentle" V smirked as he lifted the cane and allowed it to hit his hand repeatedly. Signalling he was about to do more than be gentle towards it.
"V be careful! That's not normal, it's like what happened with Lady!" Hara explained causing V to raise a brow.
"Indeed, Urizen truly has given us more work to do if I do say so myself" V muttered with a sly smirk leaving Hara scowling.
"V" she growled before blinking at the horse.
"A Geryon? Those things are suppose to be extinct" Griffon said in surprise as he noticed the horse's identity.
"Will be soon" V said before releasing Shadow from the tattoos.
"Can't we just let it live? It's only just doing what it's been told to do?" Hara asked wearily as she stood beside V, laughing Griffon shot electricity at the horse and armoured duo while mocking them.
"With what it's like, I highly doubt it'll be an option!" Griffon replied as he flew to attach. Rolling her eyes Hara watched the horse with a frown.
"Hey! You want to live right? How are you even standing this?" Hara asked the horse mentally causing a brief pause from the horse, nickering slightly it grunted from the shock caused by the sudden distraction. Eyeing her with one eye the horse whined at her causing her to nod briefly.
"I know, but if you get this armoured demon off you I'll get you away from this mess. Just promise to behave and not attack humans alright?" Hara said as the horse moved backwards and forwards, wincing from the bolts of energy aimed at the horse and armour the Geryon screamed before standing on it's hind legs. Without warning it sent the armoured demon off shocking Shadow, V and Griffon as it shook off any attachments towards the armoured demon before charging after Hara and V.
"Hey watch out!" Griffon yelled as he was too far from the pair.
"Don't hurt it!" Hara replied in a stern tone before Shadow could scratch the horse, startled Shadow skidded to a halt. V stared at Hara before noticing the horse vanish into thin air, confused he saw Hara sigh in relief.
What had she done?
"Hey you know that thing is dangerous right?" Griffon asked crossly as he battled the suit of armour.
"I merely offered it a solution and he took it, not his fault he was enslaved. He promised to not hurt humans as long as we let him live" Hara explained.
"Oh that's just dandy! Just believing everything a demonic horse says" Griffon spat sarcastically.
"Don't be a hypocrite Griffon! I trust you don't I?" Hara added sharply causing him to recoil twice, once from being almost hit and from her words. Just hearing them left his chest squeezing from mixed emotions.
V meanwhile pursed his lips but trusted Hara's judgement, if the Geryon claimed to be sincere then it must mean something.
"Y-Yeah? Well what's not to trust about me?" Griffon asked now trying to push away the warm feelings in his chest. Shadow meanwhile turned into an axe and slashed at the armour. Seeing that it was now outnumbered and weakened the armoured demon started to flee causing the group to double in their efforts.
"Don't let it escape!" V yelled as Griffon tried to attack the armour, shivering from the shock currents the demon tried to shrug the pain off.
"Trying V, it's not like-!" Griffon groaned only to yell in pain as the demon sent a shockwave causing the group to fly backwards, yelping in shock the group slammed against the wall with a sharp thud.
Gritting his teeth V felt his bones rattle violently from the impact, sliding down his right eye closed due the pain that coursing through his screaming body. V soon felt something dribbling over his closed eye and cringed as his head began to throb leaving him with a headache. Groaning V saw Griffon moaning looking motionless on the floor before getting up only to vanish into smoke before returning into V's marks. Shadow who looked as if she was laying in an odd angle vanished shortly after Griffon leaving V with Hara.
"H-" V struggled to move as he saw Hara passed out beside him, various red marks could be seen on the fur along with the smell of blood leaving him frustrated by the unexpected move. Frustrated if not worried about the sudden cheap move V slowly lifted his left hand, only to see it shake violently as he tried to place his hand over her back, sadly his mind did not register fur only pain as his mind slowly started to cloud over.
"I… I can't pass out. I need to stay awake" V gritted his teeth tightly, not caring that it would make them break as he desperately tried to remain awake. His mind no longer caring about the demon who had retreated leaving them to suffer the effects. They could not stay out in the open like this, not when there is danger in the area only his body started to shut down leaving him frustrated from not being able to move.
"Come on! Move!" V saw his vision darken a few times before his other eye closed, his consciousness fading slowly.
Groaning softly V felt what he could assume was a hand on his cheek.
"Please… wake up" a voice said startling V, to his dismay his body could not move nor could his eyes open.
"I… I can't…"
"I can't cheat"
"?!" perplexed by her words V tried to regain consciousness, sadly his body refused to his dismay.
"You need to wake up Vergil. I can't cheat you out of this mess" the voice said sounded frustrated and worried leaving V confused by the voice's words.
"Please get up"
"I… I can't move" V mentally cursed his human body causing the voice to bite their lip.
A person with long white hair and red eyes stared with their hands on their knees. Wearing a white dress top, black trousers which were wide on the bottom and black boots the person sighed heavily.
"Seriously Vergil…?" placing a hand to their face they frowned deeply. "The things I do for you" shaking their head they lifted V's left arm and wrapped it around their shoulder. Using the momentum and his light form the person walked carefully, mindful of V's injuries.
"Don't tell me you gained a concussion" the voice muttered darkly as they spotted a semi damaged building, walking towards it the person laid V's body on a makeshift mattress that was laying on the floor. Looking around with their hands on their hips, the person noticed that they were in an abandoned bed shop causing them to raise a brow.
"Better than nothing, let's just hope there's a working bathroom area" the person muttered before kneeling down beside V to see his skin had gotten pale, biting their lip the person placed their hands on his head and chest. It was then a faint yellow glow appeared causing V to groan.
Watching carefully the person observed V as colour now returned to his skin, meanwhile blood vanished from the injuries along side the cut that was located on his forehead. Biting the inside of their cheek, the person continued to watch as V's chest move in a normal manner. Sighing heavily in relief the person stood up on shaky legs before stumbling, gripping the side of a nearby bed the person cleared their throat before forcing their body to move through the store until they made it towards the staff room. Coughing heavily the person covered their mouth with their right hand while pushing the door open, feeling something sticky in their hand causing them to look down.
"Not now…" the person groaned as they saw blood in their hand. Pushing forward they spotted a sink and gripped the wall, not caring that their fingers were leaving marks on the wallpaper beside them. Pushing their body forward they gripped the sink before vomiting. Coughing heavily the person felt their nose burn while they covered their mouth after vomiting. Gripping the sink tightly they tried to steady themselves, feeling unbalanced the person swayed before yelping as they landed on the floor.
To their dismay, the person coughed up more blood before their eyes dimmed.
"Not yet please…" fatigue filled their mind as their eyes closed, cracks slowly formed on their right cheek as they passed out.
Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place
