"Alright alright," Lionheart sighs fighting the urge to roll his eyes, "Graypaw please stop trying to push Blazepaw into the brambles..I know you are still angry that she beat you," he gives the gray apprentice a stern glare when he opens his mouth to argue, "Maybe use that defeat to learn more instead of playing around all the time,"
While Graypaw looks down to the ground, Blazepaw keeps full attention, ignoring Robinwing's glare. Even though the molly was supposed to be with the Monarchs she was in fact still Sandpaw's mentor and thus was still training her.
Sandpaw yawns, "Why do I have to stay up," she groans rubbing the sleep in her eyes, "Nightfire let Dustpaw go to sleep,"
"Because," Robinwing growls, making Sandpaw flinch a bit, "Just because the Gathering is a truce doesn't mean the other Clans won't attack right after. You have to train your body not to be tired," she glares with her amber eyes but stops when Lionheart coughs, glancing at the reddish brown molly sternly.
"You'll be able to go to sleep after this Sandpaw," he then turns to the other three. Blazepaw kneads the ground in excitement. Today promised to be another warm day and this time she was training with Lionheart and Robinwing as Lionheart along with Thrushflight had nudged Bluestar into her Den to sleep.
"Now..today we are going to practice stalking," Lionheart announced, making Blazepaw stand up in excitement.
"Stalking..you mean..like actual hunting?! And the..the prey won't disappear from my paws?"
Robinwing glares while Lionheart laughs, "Of course they won't disappear! What are you talking about?"
Blazepaw feels her fur heating up as everyone stares at her and she looks down, "I..I uh..used to dream about the forest a lot..and every time I hunt in those dreams the prey would disappear!" she mews in anger, her ears pinned to her head.
Lionheart chuckles while Robinwing was now staring at her with interest, "Well these prey won't disappear unless you make too much noise. Now," he looks at all three apprentices, "There is a big difference between hunting a rabbit and hunting a mouse. Can any of you tell me why?"
Blazepaw blinks at this, having no idea while Sandpaw was trying to stifled a yawn. Graypaw sighs, rolling his eyes, "Because a rabbit will smell you before he sees you, but a mouse will feel your pawsteps through the ground before he even smells you,"
"Exactly. So what must you bear in mind when hunting mice?"
"Step..lightly?" Blazepaw suggested.
She glows at the approving look that Lionheart gives her, "Quite right, Blazepaw. You must take all your weight into your haunches, so that your paws make no impact on the forest floor. Let's try it."
Blazepaw watches in amazement as Graypaw and Sandpaw immediately drop into a stalking crouch. She watches as the two of them begin to move forward stealthily. At one point, Sandpaw trips and Robinwing growls.
"Keep your rear down, Sandpaw! Just because you're tired doesn't mean you can mess up on a stalk that you have done before!" she grows while Sandpaw quickly fixes her mistake.
Lionheart nods at Graypaw before turning to Blazepaw, "Now you try it, Blazepaw,"
Blazepaw gulps a bit before crouching down and begins to creep across the forest floor. She felt herself fall instinctively into the right position. She felt a glow of pride at that but soon that pride faded away when she stepped forwards she trips, squeaking loudly when she lands on her muzzle. She spits out the blood that pooled in her mouth when she had bitten on her tongue.
"Well, it's obvious you've known nothing but softness!" growled Robinwing while Graypaw laughs and Sandpaw holds back the snicker of amusement. "You can't even stalk right! Do you think dinner is going to come and lie down in your food dish and wait to be eaten?"
Blazepaw hisses at Robinwing's words but she listens carefully, determined to get everything right.
"Her legs are longer than most apprentices, Robinwing," Lionheart pointed out, making Blazepaw look at her legs before turning to the other two apprentices. While both Graypaw and Sandpaw have short and well muscled legs, Blazepaw's were thin and long. In fact Blazepaw is realizing that she was much taller than the other two. Shaking her head she turns back to Lionheart, "But her crouched is perfectly balanced," he explains, making Robinwing sigh.
"Which is better than Sandpaw, I supposed," Robinwing complains casting a scornful look at the cream and red molly, "Even after moons of training you still mess up on your crouched,"
Sandpaw flinches and looks dejected, Blazepaw hisses no longer able to stop blurting out, "She's tired, that's all!"
Robinwing whipped her head around and glared at Blazepaw. The reddish brown she-cat glares at her with such hatred in her amber eyes, "Tiredness is a fact of life, along with hunger and pain. You would know that if you haven't had such a soft life you little toy.." she spats angrily.
Lionheart sighs, "Alright that's enough…" he gives Robinwing a stren glare and the molly hisses before backing up. Blazepaw exhales deeply, her fur prickling in discomfort. She didn't meet Sandpaw's eyes but she knew the other apprentice was glaring at her now.
Lionheart looks at all of them, "You all need to focus..perhaps you might if you try stalking for real,"
Graypaw and Blazepaw looked up brightly. Sandpaw rolls her eyes at them.
"I want each one of you to try catching real prey," meowed Lionheart, " Sandpaw you looked beside the Owltree. Graypaw, there might be something in that big bramble patched over there. And you Blazepaw, follow the rabbit track over that rise, you'll find the dry bed of a Leafbare Stream. You may find something there,"
All three apprentices bounded away, Sandpaw easily leaping over the log to Blazepaw amazement. The ginger molly shakes her head and narrows her green eyes. With blood pounding in her ears Blazepaw crept slowly up over the rise. Sure enough, a streambed cut through the trees ahead of her. In Leaffall, she guessed it would carry the rainwater away from the forest and into Afonal's River. But now it is dry…
Hiding in the undergrowth, Blazepaw quietly walks down before she crouches down on its sandy floor. Every sense felt on fire with tension. Scanning the empty stream for signs of life, she watched for any tiny movement, mouth open wide so she could pick up the smallest scent, ears twisted forward.
She smelled the mouse before she saw it. Recognizing the odor from her first taste, her green eyes caught the sight of the brown creature scrambling through the long grass that draped the edges of the stream. Wild energy surged through her but she remained motionless, wanting to make sure she wouldn't mess this up.
Keeping her weight off her haunches, she slowly shifted closer, taking a deep breath in hopes of not tripping. Hearing the pounding of the mouse's heartbeat, Blazepaw waited until she was within striking distance. Then she pushed back hard on her hindpaws and sprang, kicking up the sand as she rose. She tripped a bit and the mouse raced away. But luckily Blazepaw was quicker and with her long legs it was easy enough to catch it. She scooped it into the air with one paw, throwing it into the sandy streambed and lunged on top of it, killing it with a sharp bite.
Blazepaw smiles as she carries the warm body between her teeth as she follows Robinwing and Lionheart into the camp, her tail held high. Both Graypaw and Sandpaw ignored her as they placed their prey onto the Fresh-Kill Pile but Blazepaw didn't care. She had made her first kill. She was a true ThunderClan apprentice now.
Sandpaw yawns as she trudged into the Apprentice Den while Graypaw went to Spottedleaf's Den so he could grab things to take care of the Elders. Blazepaw looks around, seeing the camp so alive. She watches as Bristlepaw groans as he climbs up the trees, his mentor Darkstripe was healed but Spottedleaf wanted him to stay in camp a bit more so both were on Watcher Duty for now.
"Think this as more practice in learning to be patient," meowed Darkstripe while he rolled his yellow eyes as Bristlepaw grumbles, "You are about to become a Warrior soon but you still need practice in being patient,"
Blazepaw sets her mouse on top of the Fresk-Killed Pile when she looks up as Bluestar calls for her. Trotting over she sits down in front of Bluestar.
The gray and ginger molly yawns but she smiles at her, "I saw that mouse, good catch,"
Blazepaw smiles, feeling pride burn in her, "Thank you but I still need to work on it..I accidentally tripped when I lunged for it..its only thanks to my long legs that I was able to catch it,"
"Still, you caught it..and that's what matters in the eyes of the Clan and the Gods," Blazepaw's ears twitched and she looked to Bluestar.
"I still don't get that..who or what are the Gods?"
Bluestar sighs, "The Gods..the Gods are everything to the Clans," Bluestar looks up to the sky staring at the clouds that goes by, or something else..Blazepaw blinks as Bluestar stands up and flicks her tail.
Confusion fills her but she follows Bluestar to a large tree that grew from the side of the ravine. It opens up from the roots which were blocked by hanging lichen like on Bluestar's den. Blazepaw follows through and she gasps at the sight. Through the hollow of the roots were a large cave, and to Blazepaw it was not only huge but different for it was light even though she knows that in caves it's supposed to be dark. Blazepaw looks in wonder at the strange flickering things.
Bluestar smiles as she pulls off something that was hidden in the holes in the walls, "Those are candles. In the Clans we have discovered how to capture fire and tame it to our own uses, but we need to be careful because it can never be fully tame,"
"Where are we?" Blazepaw mutters in awe, turning into a circle.
"This is the library where we hold all of ThunderClan's history, legends and stories in our books. She places a book down and opens it, "In here you will learn how to read them, and how to write your own stories as well," she paws at the open book and Blazepaw looks at it to see a large cat that seemed to be made of stars.
"This..is the Mother..Arianus. All Cats are related to her, either they be Toys, Clans, Rogues or Loners. She walked the skies for many years, alone when she discovered the world. When she came down she discovered it was empty; only the trees and the river were there. Lonely she decided to change that. She gathers a fallen branch, a rock from the river, the very shadows and a piece of grass that was blown from the river and created the Four Gods. Taranu; the First Lion and Leader of LionClan, Afonal; the First Leopard and Leader of LeopardClan, Csygalis; the First Tiger and Leader of TigerClan and Gwynata; the First Cheetah and Leader of CheetahClan."
Bluestar looks to her, "ThunderClan worship this forest because it was said that the branch that Tarnau was made from came from it. Snakerocks is where he battled Saraffa; which stories said could turn you into stone with one look in her eyes and whose flesh became the adders that live there," Bluestar then turns to her, "Which is why we must always bury the bones of our prey. The stories and legends teach us so that we don't make the same mistakes,"
Blazepaw nods her head, "But where are they? Why have I never seen a God.."
"The Twolegs.." Bluestar explains, "They have..a corruption to them, that dulls the senses. It was said that whenever they get closer to the forest something in it dies...we lost many herbs when they built the Settlement here, herbs that could have been useful in keeping kits alive during Leafbare and Eriaus's Tears," Bluestar then looks down at Blazepaw , "And such when the Twolegs got to close, the Mother Arianus brought her Children and their Clans to Silverpelt the land of the Gods. And one day where we will go when our time has come," she then grabs another book, "And now I will be teaching you the Code, which all Clans go by. To read it and to write it,"
Blazepaw blinks as she listens to Bluestar's words. Curious about the Clans ways but still wondering about the Gods..and why Bluestar seemed to change the subject so fast about them.
"That's because little Blaze she doesn't like the path they forced her on..she doesn't like that the path made her lose so much," Blazepaw turns her head but doesn't see anyone. Shrugging, she turns back to Bluestar to continue her lesson.
