AN: Sorry about being later everyone. Turns out my birthday and the first few days of college have been more busy then I expected and I had little time to write. This ended up as a shorter chapter due to that and my difficulties writing the scene as well. Before I address some of the comments I'd like to first of all thank my friend Fia for helping me by acting somewhat as a beta reader and listening to me ramble about my ideas. And second I'm curious if you all think I should do a major time jump to when Jaune is older or do a few chapters building up his life with James. Regardless I'll be switching to his POV mainly in the next few chapters. Now to address a few of the comments(and thank you to everyone who reads or comments in general)

I'm glad you find the premise interesting. There will be more action as the story develops as well as meeting more of the main cast I promise. Right now I'm just setting up the beginnings of the story so there hasn't been much chance for that to occur. James will defiantly have some struggles with raising Jaune and Saffron which we see the beginnings of in this chapter. I don't intend to put Winter and James together. She will be a part of Jaunes life as a mentor figure and sister figure eventually however. I'm sure I'll struggle to write Jaune as a child some which is part of the reason I'm considering time skips.

Yep. I'll admit I get a little irritated by the fighting styles in rwby at times so you may find more real world inspired designs that you would see in the actual show. So I'll probably have both Jaune and James fighting styles be a bit more operator then the show but still try to keep some of the fantasticalness that the show is known for.

There will definitely be some time spent in Atlas and events happening both early and later in the show. I plan to spend time there and in Vale with some in other areas as well to a lesser extent.

Thank you for the support and interest guys!
It was a beautiful day in Atlas. The months of gloom and bitter weather would soon settle permanently over the region for the winter months. But today the sky was a pure expanse of light blue, not a cloud in sight to cast a shade over the world. While the air was still more frigid than most would be comfortable with, the normally ever prevalent winds had slowed down to a gentle breeze. It was solely unsuitable for what most would consider proper weather for a funeral, however James felt the lost Arcs would find it appropriate.
Two weeks have passed since the fateful day he found himself running into the burning remains of Vytal Village. Two weeks since he found his friend's family cut down to one unconscious child and another one not even through their first year of combat school. Two weeks since he gained a responsibility more terrifying to him then all the grimm in the world, being a father. He would do his best of course, he loved Jaune and Saffron and owed it to them and to their family. But over the past weeks he had worried in his private moments if it was a task he was up to. James had spent most of his life pursuing his career in the military with little time to focus on anything else. He had enrolled in combat school as soon as he was able to in order to escape a prominent but cold family life. This left him feeling solely unsuitable to try to replace the warm and loving environment of the Arc family.
These feelings were not encouraged by his interactions with the Arc children so far. While initially happy to see the familiar face of their pseudo Uncle, they were not taking the situation well at all. Which he understood perfectly well of course, but that understanding of why this was happening didn't do anything to help him know what to do. After initially waking up Jaune had been quite talkative, frantic to know what had happened and share what he had seen. But gradually over the weeks after waking up he had fallen into himself, going periods of time refusing to talk to James or even acknowledge the world around him. While he had only seen Saffron for the first time yesterday in person when she arrived from Beacon to attend the funeral. He had heard reports from Ozpin and had seen in their video chats that she was lashing out in her grief at the world around her.
James sighed as he brought his attention back to the world around him. He was dressed in his full Atlas uniform wearing all the badges and honors he had achieved during his career. To his right sat Ozpin, for once going without his coffee mug and wearing a black suit and tie instead of his usual dark green. To his left sat first Jaune and further down Saffron, the two had quickly latched on to each other seeking comfort when Saffron had arrived. Both wearing proper funeral attire he had ordered purchased for them for the occasion by his secretary. There was a fairly large turnout of attendees for the funeral for the Arc family, appropriate for the family's history in Vale and Atlas. Thankfully with Ozpin's help he had kept too many people from approaching the children to talk, while it was well intentioned he doubted that the children would appreciate it that much at the moment.
Now the funeral was coming to an end and he had one last duty to do today. With a deep breath he stood and nodded in the direction of a squad of Atlasian soldiers in dress uniforms carrying rifles strapped to their backs. They marched forward to stand in formation while he came up to stand at their side. Along with his medals and awards he wore something else unusual in his day to day life today. An Atlasian officer's saber was strapped to his side, the steel glinted in the sunlight as he drew it out of its white sheath decorated with red and silver designs. With the sword at his side he yelled out his first command and the men slung their rifles off their shoulders and into the ready position. With his second command he matched the soldiers raising their rifles to fire by raising the sword to the sky. And with a final order he swung the saber down as the men fired in unison once, twice, and then a final time before returning the rifles to the rest position and marching to the side again.
He slowly slid the saber into its sheath before looking to his side and gesturing to Jaune and Saffron. They came forward to where he stood next to the line of graves that would hold the deceased Arcs. He handed them both a packet of dirt and allowed them to go from grave to grave sprinkling dirt and saying one final goodbye before they would be covered. He followed behind them slowly doing the same, but paused instead of turning with them to sit back down. Instead he looked down into Verts grave, and considered before nodding to himself approving of his decision. He unstrapped the saber from his belt before kneeling and setting the saber on top of his coffin. He stood satisfied with the one last gift he could give his friend, it seemed only right to him that the man would carry a blade with him even into the unknown. Having done that he turned and returned to stand with the children, his hands on their shoulders in a show of support. Surprisingly Saffron smiled up at him and didn't try to shake his hand off like he would have expected with her recent actions.
As the funeral started to finish up and he left with the Children and Ozpin he felt maybe things just needed some time to work out on their own. He would do his best for the children of course, but this wasn't an enemy he could just airstrike to make go away. Only time and repeated effort would manage to beat this beast. He would support Jaune and Saffron and with time they would heal.
The four of them made their way back to Atlas Academy, his position as headmaster held certain benefits like his own quarters there as well as enough guest rooms to bunk Ozpin and Saffron. When they entered his living space Saffron quickly made her way to her room, the door slamming behind him. James watched this with a sigh, some progress may have been made but there were still plenty of problems as this reminded him. A hand rested on his shoulder and he looked over to see Oz giving him a supportive smile while his eyes shared his exhaustion. The two sat down at a round table sitting in the kitchenette with Jaune joining them across the table. Surprisingly it was Jaune who spoke first after they were seated.
Hesitantly he spoke up. "What are we supposed to do now? Everything the last two weeks has been like a dream. The only thing that kept me going was knowing that the funeral was coming up and I had to make it to that." Jaune looked up at them and the lost look in his eyes made James' heart break yet a little more.
James gave the boy a tired smile. "We do what humanity has always done, Jaune, we survive and move forward the best we can. I know you've gone through something terrible, especially for someone so young. Something I can't understand on a personal level, but I can promise I'll be here for you Jaune. You and Saffron both" He said with a glance towards the closed door. "Your father was like a brother to me, more family then the one I was raised with. As your Godfather I'll do my best to take care of both of you, but I know we'll have to work together." He paused here looking at Jaune seriously. "I won't ever try to replace your Father though Jaune, so don't ever worry about that. For now you and I will try to settle in here, get you in school. Your sister will return to Beacon and continue her education."
Ozpin chimed in. "James is right, Jaune, the best thing we can do is take things step by step. While I might not have been as close to your parents as James was I give you my word too that I will do my best to help you and your sister as well. Especially as her headmaster during this time, anything else would be beneath me as a huntsman and as a human. Always remember Jaune, our ability as humans to love and care for each other is what has allowed us to stand against the grimm for so long. Alone we all fall, but together united we are able to overcome." He smiled. "Now how about you go and check in on your sister, I'm sure she'll need you during this time and I need to talk to James about some school business."
With this Jaune gave the two of them a small nod and left the room in the direction of the bed rooms. After he left Ozpin leaned back in his chair with a sigh he frowned as he looked James in the eyes. "So you were right, at least in part about what happened." He admitted.
James leaned forward as well, he didn't know what evidence Oz had collected but with an opening like that it was sure to be a long talk.
