Help is Around the Corner

Addison and Derek's trailer catches fire, and Meredith offers them a place to stay for a while.

The moment they get to work, Richard Webber asks Addison and Derek to follow him.

"Your lawyers are here-" he points to the conference room.

"Excellent," says Derek bitterly.

"Thank you, Richard," says Addison, as she follows Derek.

Meredith watches them go in, and stares longingly at Addison before Richard interrupts her.

"Meredith, you have patients to see," says Richard.

"You do, room 3042," says Dr. Bailey.

"Yes, Dr. Bailey," says Meredith, as she blushes.

"Fools in love," Dr. Bailey shakes her head as she directs the other interns.

"What?" says Richard.

"Oh, nothing," says Bailey.

"Does this have something to do with Derek complaining about not being Meredith Grey the other day?" says Richard.

"I'm not answering that," says Bailey. "Stevens, you're with Dr. Sloan, Karev, you're with Dr. Burke, O'Malley, you're with the Chief," says Bailey.

"Yes Dr. Bailey," the other interns say, as they scurry off to where they are going.

"I'll keep an eye on these two, sir," says Dr. Bailey, nodding towards Derek and Addison.

"Thank you Bailey," says Richard, as he heads off to his surgery.

"Fools in love," Bailey shakes her head again, as she goes to check up on some paperwork.

"Umm, Dr. Bailey, who am I with?" says Meredith.

"You? You're with me," says Dr. Bailey.

"And Dr. Shepherd and Dr. Montgomery-" says Meredith, hopefully.

"No, just me," says Meredith. "Those two have the lawyers to talk to."

Meredith nods, and follows Bailey down the hall to the pit.

"Now, are you going to be distracted all day, or are you going to be able to keep it together?" says Bailey.

"I can keep it together," says Meredith. "And I'm not a fool…" says Meredith under her breath.

"What did you just say?" says Bailey.

"Nothing!" says Meredith, as she keeps up with Bailey.

"I thought so," says Bailey, as she points out the first patient for Meredith to work on.

Meredith sighs in relief as she gives the patient a work-up, and she looks over her shoulder until Bailey is out of sight again.

"Your boss sure seems like she's on your case," says the patient.

"Yeah-" says Meredith. "Oh, sorry, that was probably inappropriate," Meredith blushes.

"I won't tell," says the patient.

"Thank you," says Meredith. "Lift your arms for me?"

"You're cute," says the patient forwardly.

"Oh, thanks…" says Meredith.

"Are you single?" the patient asks her.

"Technically yes," says Meredith, biting her lip a little as she thinks about Addison.

"Oh, well then you won't mind if I give you my number?" the patient flirts with her shamelessly.

"Oh, well, I'm umm-" Meredith sighs a bit. "Sorry," she apologizes and leans in closer. "You can't tell anyone… But I'm sorta in love with someone else right now," says Meredith.

"Ohh!" says the patient. "Does she know?" she whispers.

"What makes you think it's a woman!?" says Meredith.

"It isn't?" the patient giggles at her.

"Okay fine, it is, but you still can't tell anyone," Meredith giggles.

"I won't," says the patient. "Sucks that all the hot ones are taken…"

"Emotionally I am taken… Unfortunately, I'm still not in a relationship…" says Meredith.

"What's stopping you?" says the patient.

"She's married-" says Meredith.

"Oh, that sucks," says the patient.

"To my ex-," says Meredith.

"Oh, that really sucks," says the patient.

"I know," says Meredith. "And she's even my roommate," says Meredith. "And so's he, but that's not the point…" says Meredith.

"Huh?" says the patient.

"Y'know, it's kind of a long story that involves a lot of tequila, and a trailer fire, and a dog named Doc, and we can just get you checked out here, you don't have to hear all about my life if you don't want to," says Meredith.

"But it's just getting to the juicy part," says the patient.

"Fine," says Meredith. "But you're going to need an X-Ray."

The patient nods at her, and Meredith checks in with Bailey before Bailey does indeed send her up to X-Ray.

On the way there, they pass by the conference room, and Meredith pauses so she can stare at Addison through the window.

"Is that her," the patient leans in.

"Yeah, that's her," says Meredith, not even bothering to deny it.

"She's sexy," says the patient.

"I know," says Meredith.

"She's beautiful," says the patient.

"I know," says Meredith.

"She's your roommate, and you seriously haven't hooked up with her yet?" says the patient.

"I know…" Meredith sighs. "Hopefully soon though. She just said she liked me last night."

"Did you say it back?" says the patient.

"I said it first," says Meredith.

"Nice," says the patient. "So then, what's the holdup?"

"Well, they're only getting a divorce now," says Meredith.

"But I thought the guy was your ex. So was that before he was married, or?" says the patient.

"No," says Meredith. "But I didn't know he was married, he didn't tell me, and that's when his wife showed up," Meredith giggles.

"And you fell in love with her?" says the patient.

"And I fell in love with her," says Meredith.

"Are you gonna tell her?" says the patient.

"I already did," says Meredith.

"No! That you love her," says the patient.

"Oh- well, hopefully, but we haven't even dated yet," says Meredith. "She didn't want to date me while she was still married, not even one kiss. Wanted to do it right," says Meredith.

"She cares about you," says the patient.

"Yeah…" says Meredith wistfully.

"Well come on now, let's get me up to X-Ray so that you and that cute doctor can kiss already," says the patient.

"Okay," says Meredith, as she pushes the gurney there.

Meanwhile, Addison and Derek are fighting over CD's and vases, and Derek wants Mark's futon couch, which is actually Addison's, and Addison wants Derek's Star Wars collection, even though she gave it to him one year for Christmas. "If I give you the couch, can I please have my DVD's," says Addison. "Only if I get the vase," says Derek.

"Ahem, with all due respect doctors, while all of these personal belongings are I'm sure, very important to you, we have some legal matters to attend to that are much more related to your financial situation than any particular memorabilia," says the lawyer.

"I want my land in Seattle," says Derek.

"Then I want the Brownstone in Central Park," says Addison.

"What about the Hampton's?" says Derek.

"You hate the Hampton's," says Addison.

"Mark likes the Hampton's," says Derek.

"Mark isn't divorcing us," says Addison.

"If I give you the Star Wars, and the couch, and the vase, then can I have the Hampton's?" says Derek.

"It's a property, it's worth millions of dollars, Derek," says Addison.

"So is your trust fund," says Derek.

"That was never included in the marriage," says Addison.

"So we're back to square one," says Derek.

"Can we take a break?" says Addison.

"If you sell the Hampton's property, you could liquidate it, and each keep half of the profits," the lawyer offers.

"I want the Hampton's," says Derek.

"Can he buy me out of the Hampton's?" says Addison.

"He can," says the lawyers.

"Fine," says Derek.

"Fine," says Addison.

"I'm keeping the couch," says Derek.

"I'm keeping the Star Wars," says Addison.

"What about the vase?" says Derek.

"You can keep the vase," says Addison.

"Thank you," says Derek.

"Alright, I'll send these papers off to the printers, you'll have them by this afternoon at the latest," says the lawyer.

"Hey, it doesn't say anything about Star Wars here?" says Addison.

"Or the couch?" says Derek.

"As we said, these papers are about your stocks, bonds, and your real estate. Your personal belongings are yours to figure out," the lawyer says.

"Okay," says Derek.

"Okay," says Addison.

Just as they are finishing up, Addison catches a flash of Meredith giggling with a patient, and she narrows her eyes at the scene of it.

"Do you think she's flirting with her?" says Addison.

"No," says Derek.

"Really?" says Addison.

"No, but I think you're jealous," says Derek, laughing.

"That's not funny," says Addison, who scoffs, and continues to stare at Meredith as she heads off again.

"You're jealous," says Derek.

"Shut up," says Addison.

They head to lunch, and they find Meredith sitting in the cafeteria along with her patient.

"Room for me?" says Addison, as she approaches the table.

"Of course," Meredith giggles, as she stands up, and gestures for Addison to sit down so she can sit on her lap like at the dinner table.

Addison does so, and Meredith curls into her lap.

"You know, I tried to hit on her this morning, but I hear she's taken," says the patient, winking at Meredith.

"Oh!?" says Addison.

"Yeah, she did," Meredith giggles.

"And she told me that she couldn't date me, because she-" the patient continues to ramble, but Meredith interrupts her.

"Because I like you too much," says Meredith, as she snuggles Addison.

"Awe," says Addison, visibly relaxing after Meredith's confession. "I really like you, too."

Addison takes hers and Meredith's lunches out of her bag, and she proceeds to feed Meredith with her fork, and she eats her lunch in between bites.

"You two are practically on your honeymoon already," the patient giggles.

"Yeah?" says Addison.

"Yeah," says Meredith.

"You two are the funniest doctors ever," the patient laughs, and Meredith and Addison laugh along with her.

***** END OF CHAPTER 35

Author's note:

So I added the 'slow-burn,' tag to this fic, which was originally a one-shot, and then a two-shot, and was intended to be a medium-burn, before it turned into a really really really long run-on sentence about these to gay idiots. ;)

Ps. Dear fans, you're awesome!
