Now We Have To Deal With It
With all the guests gone, the crew had made their way to the couches and pushed them together. Drinks and food galore covered the tables. A pleasant atmosphere surrounded the heroes. Kendra walked over with a bottle of water and stepped through her friends to sit behind Clint and Maria on the couch. They were on the floor in conversation as Clint twirled his drum sticks around. She looked at Maria who had a very familiar jacket on, she tugged it and Maria turned to look at Kendra.
"Nice jacket, anyone I know?" Kendra jokes.
Maria laughed, "Just your run of the mill super soldier, you might know him."
Kendra just smiled and took a sip, tucking her legs under her, she looked up across the room and caught Steve's eyes who just winked and went back to sharing a drink with her cousin. She settled herself in for the night. Suddenly wishing she had a blanket.
"But, it's a trick!" Clint yelled over the crowd, referring to Thor's hammer.
"Oh, no." Thor contested, "It's much more than that."
Clint didn't buy it, "Uh, "Whosoever be he worthy shall haveth the power!" Whatever man! It's a trick." He exclaimed enthusiastically.
Thor smiled and waved his hand forward, "Well please, be my guest."
Everyone looks up, Tony looked over to Clint, "Come on."
"Really?" Clint asked, not one to back out of a challenge, he stood up from the floor.
Rhodey smirked and settled in, "Oh this is gonna be beautiful."
Tony watched Clint walk around and head over to the hammer, which was resting on the table,"Clint, you've had a tough week, we won't hold it against you if you can't get it up."
Clint settled himself in front of the hammer, "You know I've seen this before, right?" He grabs Thor's hammer and can't lift it. He looks over to Thor after he fails, "I still don't know how you do it."
Stark looked over to his friend, "Smell the silent judgment?"
Clint waved over, "Please, Stark, by all means" Stark stood up and unbuttoned his suit jacket, Kendra rolled her eyes and laid down the length of the couch.
Tony stood next to the hammer. "Never one to shrink from an honest challenge. It's physics." Stark grasps Thor's hammer. Right, so, if I lift it, I...I then rule Asgard?"
Thor nodded, "Yes, of course." Kendra chuckled and watched.
"I will be reinstituting Prima Nocta." Stark grabs the hammer but fails to lift it up, Kendra and the crew watched in amusement as he failed. Then watched as Tony left to grab his hand piece of his suit, and still fails. It only got better when Rhodey joined him with his own suit piece.
"Alright, let's go!" Tony chipped, he and Rhodey both pull as hard as they can. To no avail.
Kendra asked Maria to pass her the popcorn as Bruce stood up and tried to lift the hammer. He roars trying to scare everyone, but fails. The room went quiet. Steve decided it's his turn to try.
"No pressure sweetie," Kendra jokes as she tosses popcorn into her mouth, eager to see the results.
Rhodey claps, "Come on, Cap!"
Steve starts pulling on the hammer and manages to budge it a little; Thor looks a little alarmed, Kendra choked on her popcorn but contained herself, taking a large swig of water. Steve soon gives up as he still fails to lift it; Thor laughs with relief. Kendra looked over to her cousin, who just shrugged. Steve raised his hands in defeat, Kendra raised her water bottle, "You still look amazing, just can't be king." Steve rolled his eyes and sat back down.
Bruce looked over to Nat, "Widow?"
Natasha took a swig of her beer, "Oh, no no. That's not a question I need answered." She then looked over at Kendra, "How about you Andrews?"
Kendra placed the popcorn bowl next to her on the couch, "I'm fully content not being the King of Asgard, so pass." The room booed and threw snacks and wrappers at her.
The boys were standing around the hammer and Stark was convinced, "All deference to the man who wouldn't be king, but it's rigged."
Clint walked over to join them, "You bet your ass."
Maria stopped drinking and pointed to Clint, "Steve, he said a bad language word."
Steve looked down in annoyance before looking over to Stark, "Did you tell everyone about that?" Kendra smiled, getting up from her place on the couch, walking over to where Steve is, he shifts over so she can settle into his side.
Tony ignored Steve, 'The handle's imprinted, right? Like a security code. "Whosoever is carrying Thor's fingerprints" is, I think, the literal translation?"
"Yes, well that's, uh, that's a very, very interesting theory." Thor commented, " I have a simpler one." He gets up from the couch and lifts his hammer and flips it. "You're all not worthy."
The room begins to boo louder. Suddenly there's a loud screeching noise, causing everyone to cover their ears. As it fades away, they bring down their hands only to see a robot walking towards them. Kendra unraveled herself from Steve as he stood up on the couch.
"Worthy…" The bot hisses, "No... How could you be worthy? You're all killers."
Steve looked at the robot but said only one word, "Stark."
Tony held out his communicator, "JARVIS."
It kept walking towards them, "I'm sorry, I was asleep. Or...I was a-dream?"
Tony tapped his device. "Reboot, Legionnaire OS, we got a buggy suit."
It kept on going, "There was a terrible noise...and I was tangled in... in...strings. I had to kill the other guy. He was a good guy."
Kendra stood up and placed a protective hand in front of Steve who was ready to fight. He ignored her, "You killed someone?"
The robot continued, "Wouldn't have been my first call. But, down in the real world we're faced with ugly choices."
"Who sent you?" Thor asked.
Suddenly, Tony's voice was played throughout the room, "I see a suit of armor around the world"
Bruce looked over to Tony, "Ultron!" Kendra moved from Steve stepped a bit ahead of him, not believing her eyes.
Ultron raised his hands, "In the flesh. Or, no, not yet. Not this...chrysalis. But I'm ready. I'm on a mission."
Natasha tense looked over, "What mission?" The team braced themselves.
"Peace in our time." Behind Ulton, suddenly the Iron Legion bots smash through the walls and attack the team. One flew towards Kendra and Steve. He pushed her out of the way before kicking up the table, catching a blast and hitting the ground hard. Kendra slid away from Steve and released an energy shield to block her hit. She watched the Iron Legion reign terror on the team.
One of the robots headed towards the scepter in the lap. Kendra blast the floor under her and falls. She tries to send out a pulse to try and stop him but it's too fast. Behind her, a robot grabs her and lifts her off the ground. "AH!" Kendra screamed as she went higher and higher back into the battleground. "Not so fast," Ultron scolds. The machine begins to squeeze her tightly. She squirms around trying to break free. "You are strong," Ultron mocks, "But I'm stronger." Kendra closes her eyes and places her hands on the arms wrapped around her middle. She pulls her energy forward, deep from her mind. Kendra's body begins to glow as she feels her hands pushing through the metal and breaking the arms off.
Kendra snapped her eyes open as she suddenly fell from the ceiling and slammed her head on the floor. "No," She spits out, "You are just metal." She closes her eyes and rolls over to her back.
"Kendra, stay down!" Tony screamed. Kendra's eyes snapped open and covered her head just as Tony jumped onto one of the machines above her. "We are here to help," the machine alerted. Tony used his tool struggling to hold on, Iron Legion. "We are here to help. We are here to help." Stark continues to try and shut it down.
Kendra crawls away safely and rests against the wall for a moment before looking over to see Steve is without his shield. She looks around and finds it close to Clint. She whistles and Clint looks at her, she nods and uses her hands to grab the shield with her powers and drag it to Clint. Tony finally manages to shut down the machine, at the same time below Clint throws Steve's shield at him.
"Cap!" Clint yelled, Steve catches his shield to dismember the last Iron Legion.
Ultron's final last form fumbles around, "That was dramatic! I'm sorry, I know you mean well. You just didn't think it through. You want to protect the world, but you don't want it to change. How is humanity saved if it's not allowed to...evolve?" He picks up one of the dismembered robots, "With these? These puppets? There's only one path to peace: The Avengers' extinction."
Suddenly Thor throws his hammer at Ultron and smashes him to pieces.
Kendra lets out a belated breath and then winces, she touches her face and feels the blood.
..
The team was below in the lab surveying the destruction from Ultron. Bruce looked through the files, "All our work is gone. Ultron cleared out, used the internet as an escape hatch."
Steve clenched his jaw, shaking his head slightly, "Ultron."
Kendra, barely cleaned and bandaged, looks up from her desk, before ducking her head closer to the computer screen.
"He's been in everything." Natasha announced, "Files, surveillance. Probably knows more about us than we know about each other."
Rhodey stood up from his seat, ""He's in your files, he's on the internet." Clint looked over to Kendra who just shook her head as Rhodes continued, "What if he decides to access something a little more exciting?"
"Nuclear codes." Maria suspected.
"Nuclear codes." Rhodey repeated, "Look, we need to make some calls, assuming we still can."
"Nukes?" Nat commented, "He said he wanted us dead."
"He didn't say dead." Steve corrected, "He said extinct."
"He also said he killed somebody." Clint reminded everyone as he learned over the railing.
Maria looked confused, "But there wasn't anyone else in the building."
"Yes there was." Tony announced. He brought up the now destroyed 3D model of Jarvis. Kendra winced, standing up from her desk and Bruce walked over to the center of the room at the model.
"This is insane." Bruce whispered.
Steve crossed his arms and looked to the ground, "JARVIS was the first line of defense. He would've shut Ultron down, it makes sense."
Kendra shook her head and walked over, "No, Ultron could've assimilated Jarvis. I don't understand-"
"This isn't a strategy" Bruce interrupted, " This is...rage."
Kendra suddenly felt the room shift as her cousin stormed in. Thor stalked right to Stark and grabbed hold of him by his throat."
Clint straightened up watching the scene, "Woah, woah, woah! It's going around."
Tony struggled as Thor carried him to the wall. Kendra went to walk over but Steve lifted his hand and with a stern look told her to stop. Tony continued to struggle, "Come on. Use your words, buddy."
"I have more than enough words to describe you, Stark." Thor hissed, "The only reason I don't strike you down now is Kendra"
Steve walked over to them, "Thor! The Legionnaire?"
Thor drops Stark to his feet before looking over to Steve, "Trail went cold about a hundred miles out but it's headed north, and it has the scepter. Now we have to retrieve it, again!"
Natasha scoffed, "The genie's out of that bottle. Clear and present is Ultron."
Dr. Cho stood next to the destroyed robot, " I don't understand. You built this program. Why is it trying to kill us?"
Tony starts laughing, Bruce next to him subtly shakes his head at him to get him to stop. Kendra puts a hand to her forehead knowing exactly where this is going.
"You think this is funny?" Thor snaps.
Tony shakes his head and turns to the ground, "No. It's probably not, right?" He looks at Kendra, "Is this very terrible? Is it so...is it so...it is. It's so terrible."
"Tony." Kendra sighed.
Thor walked over, "This could've been avoided if you hadn't played with something you don't understand."
Tony put a finger out, "No, I'm sorry. I'm sorry." He walked over to meet Thor, "It is funny. It's a hoot that you don't get why we need this."
Bruce glanced at Kendra before looking back to Tony, "Tony," He quipped, "maybe this might not be the time to.."
"Really?! That's it?" Tony turned and snapped at Bruce, "You just roll over, show your belly, every time somebody snarls."
"Only when I've created a murder bot." Bruce responded.
Tony flailed out his hands, "We didn't. Isn't that right Kendra?"
The team went silent as everyone's head snapped in her direction. Thor narrowed his eyes at his cousin and Steve's cheeks twitched.
"What does he mean Kendra?" Steve asked quietly.
Kendra went to speak but Tony spoke for her, "She encrypted the data that Bruce and I were creating to merge with Ultron. But it wasn't even ready to connect. The coding was always wrong."
Thor stepped forward, "Cousin you knew about this?"
She slowly shrugged and nodded, "Yes but only because we all agreed, if we couldn't figure out the program in 3 days we would call it a wash. Delete the data. It hasn't accepted any of the data. Tonight was the last calculation anyway. We never expected-"
Steve took a step towards her, "You told me nothing was going on down here. You lied to me,"
Kendra saw his look of betrayal,"Well. I- I mean. I wouldn't exactly call it-" She stuttered.
"This isn't on her Rogers. We weren't even close." Tony snapped at Steve, before turning to Bruce, "Were we close to an interface?"
"Well, you did something right." Steve snapped back, "And you did it right here." He looked back to Kendra, "The Avengers were supposed to be different than SHIELD."
"Hey!" Kendra snapped at her boyfriend, "This wasn't exactly something we were planning for Rogers.
"You shouldn't have been messing around with the gem to begin with," Thor commented. Kendra narrowed her eyes.
"I'm a scientist," Kendra announced around the room, "Everything you all are is just science, it's calculation, variables, mistakes" She looked at Thor, "Sometimes things we don't understand. We never planned for this to get this far but it is happening. Now we have to deal with it."
Tony pulled her away and walked into the middle of the room, "She's right. A hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space. We're standing three hundred feet below it. We're the Avengers. We can bust arms dealers all the livelong day, but, that's up there?" He pointed up above, referring to the sky, "That- that's the end game. How were you guys planning on beating that?"
Steve could only answer with one thing, "Together."
"We'll lose." Tony replied, walking towards him.
Steve stood his ground. "Then we'll do that together, too." Tony looked at him for a moment before turning away. "Thor's right. Ultron's calling us out. And I'd like to find him before he's ready for us. The world's a big place. Let's start making it smaller."
Steve took one of the tablets from the table as the team began grabbing and sorting through the wreckage. Kendra walked over to Steve. "Steve, please just-" Without another word he walked out of the lab.
