Lee got up early on New Year's Day and went into town to see if there was a telegram. Sure enough, there was a piece of paper waiting for him.
Lee,
Absolutely! We'd love to have you and Rosemary for the weekend.
See you soon,
Lillian & Grace
So, they were going to Brookfield! He thanked Ned and drove back home to tell Rosemary the good news. When he got home, Rosemary was sitting on the settee reading something. "Good morning, sweetheart," he said as he came to sit beside her.
"Morning," she replied, looking up from her magazine.
"I got a telegram from Lillian and Grace," he said, waving the piece of paper.
"Oh?" Her eyes lit up. "What did they say?"
"They said…" Lee drew out the word.
"Lee." She hit his shoulder. "Don't play games."
"Alright," he chuckled. "They said that they'd love to have us!"
"Wonderful!" Rosemary threw up her arms. "Well, I'd better get breakfast started, and we can pack, and then we can go after lunch. Oh, it's going to be so much fun!" She jumped off the settee. "I'll start breakfast now."
"Okay." Lee chuckled. "I'll pack some of my stuff," he said, knowing that Rosemary would check it over after anyways.
"You do that." Rosemary replied, knowing very well that she was going to check it over after. "I just hope I don't get sick," she said quietly to herself. Within a few minutes, she had breakfast ready. "Lee! I've got breakfast ready!" She called up the stairs.
"I'll be right down." He replied.
She put everything out on the table, and in a few seconds he came down the stairs. "Smells delicious."
"I sure hope so." She said as they sat down. "Are you all packed?"
"Yes, I am. Do you think you'll be ready to leave by lunch?"
"I should be."
They finished eating breakfast and then Rosemary pushed her chair back. "I'll get cleaned up and then I'll go finish packing."
"Why don't I clean up and you can go pack?" Lee offered.
"Thank you, sweetheart," she gave him a kiss. "I appreciate it."
"I know." He smiled as she disappeared up the stairs.
Rosemary hurried to their room and began packing her things. It didn't take her long, and then she checked over Lee's things. Seeing that he had packed everything properly, she settled down on the chair. Lee was cleaning up, and she didn't really feel like going back downstairs, so she started to read. Before she knew it, she had fallen asleep.
"Sweetheart," Lee gently shook her shoulder. "Sweetheart."
"Oh." Rosemary's eyelids flew open. "Did I oversleep? Did we miss it?"
"No." Lee chuckled. "We have to leave in twenty minutes. I thought you might want lunch."
"Oh, okay. No, I'm not really hungry."
"Are you completely packed?"
"Yes."
"Alright, then I'll put this stuff in the car." Lee bent over to pick up the suitcase. "What did you put in here?" He huffed as he lifted it. "We're only staying for the weekend, you know."
"I know." Rosemary rolled her eyes. "You can never be too prepared."
"Maybe you can." Lee muttered to himself as he stumbled out the door.
Rosemary chuckled to herself and then followed him. She decided that she'd prepare some food for on the way. Fifteen minutes later, they were in the car. They tucked the blankets around them and started on their way.
When they arrived at Brookfield, Rosemary was more than ready to get out of the car. Lee stopped right beside the house, and she hopped out and made her way to the door. Just as she lifted her hand to knock, the door flew open to the vision of Grace's smiling face. "Grace, hello!" Rosemary exclaimed as she gave her friend a hug.
"Hi Rosemary!" Grace accepted the hug. "Where's Lee?"
"Oh, he's getting the stuff." Rosemary turned as Lee came up the steps, laden with baggage.
"Hi Lee!"
"Hey Grace." Lee smiled underneath his burden. "Where do you want us?"
"Oh, follow me." Grace led them through the house and to one of the upstairs rooms. "You can dump it all here."
"Oh good." Lee puffed as he literally dumped everything on the floor. He noticed Rosemary's disapproving look. "It's all your stuff."
Rosemary rolled her eyes and laughed. "Where's Lillian?"
"She just went shopping with the children. She should be back soon."
"Wonderful, wonderful. How have you guys been?"
"Well, besides losing Vivian, life has gone on pretty normally here."
"Do you know why she left?" Rosemary asked as they headed back downstairs.
"No, we don't. She wouldn't say and we didn't really want to pressure her."
"I see."
The sound of children's voices got louder from outside. "Looks like they've returned," Grace said as she walked over to open the door. All of the children piled in the house, laughing and talking as they each tried to show Grace what they had bought. They quieted down a little when they noticed Lee and Rosemary standing there with smiles on their faces.
"Hi," Vivian walked up to Rosemary.
Rosemary shot a brief smile at Lee before kneeling down. "Hi Vivian. How are you?"
"Good. We just got back from the store."
"Oh, that sounds exciting. What did you all get?"
"Miss Lillian got some vegetables and fruit, and we got to play in the snow."
"Fun!"
"Do you like playing in the snow?"
Rosemary remembered the last time they had gone sledding. "Yes, yes I do." She heard Lee's chuckle behind her. "Maybe we'll have to try it sometime."
"That'd be fun." Vivian nodded excitedly. "I'm going to go play now, okay?"
"Alright. Have fun, sweetheart." Rosemary smiled and stood again.
"Playing in the snow, eh?" Lee teased.
"We went sledding, and that was fun." Rosemary rolled her eyes.
"It was, it was. I can't wait to see you do it again."
"You will." Rosemary returned as she turned to walk towards the kitchen. "I'm going to go help Grace."
"Have fun." Lee could hear her scoff from across the hall. He chuckled to himself and decided to go find the boys. Maybe he could convince them to play outside with him.
"Is there something I can do to help?" Rosemary asked, coming into the kitchen.
"If you could cut the carrots, that'd be great." Lillian said, handing Rosemary a cutting board and knife. "The carrots are on the counter."
"Absolutely." Rosemary set up her station. "Thank you so much for having us on such short notice."
"You two are welcome any time." Grace assured her.
"The real reason we're here is that after having Vivian stay with us, Lee and I wanted to come visit her. We both really enjoyed having her and it made us think of adoption."
"Do you think you might want to adopt Vivian?" Lillian asked.
"We definitely may." Rosemary smiled. "But we have a slight problem, which is why we came so quickly."
"Oh?"
"I'm," a huge smile settled over Rosemary's face. "Pregnant." She still couldn't believe she could actually say it.
"Wow! That's so awesome!" Grace came over and gave Rosemary another huge hug.
"Congratulations!" Lillian echoed as she came to give Rosemary a hug too.
"Thanks." Rosemary was beaming. "I wasn't sure how long I would be feeling okay for, so we wanted to come right away."
"That makes sense." Lillian nodded. "If you want to spend some time with Vivian, that's fine."
"I'm sure we'll spend time with her – and all the kids." Rosemary brought the carrots over to Grace at the stove. As she returned to the counter, her eye caught on the snow outside. She walked over to the window and looked out over the wintery landscape. While looking over to the side of the house, she saw a bunch of figures engaged in a snowball fight and one of them was Lee. She thought back to his earlier comments and smiled to herself. She would show him. "I'm going to go find Lee," she excused herself.
"All right. We'll call you when supper is ready." Grace nodded.
"Perfect." Rosemary walked into the entry way and put on all her outer stuff, shoes, coat, hat, scarf, and gloves. Already she could hear the children laughing and yelling at each other. She opened the door and hurried outside to the battle scene. Indeed, it was a battle scene. Lee was on one side getting attacked by three of the children, while the rest were battling each other. Rosemary came quietly behind Lee, grabbed a scoopful of snow, and dumped it down his back.
"Hey!" He exclaimed, turning to see who did it. "Rosie!"
"I was having fun in the snow." She shrugged. The children laughed and started throwing snowballs at him again.
"Rosie, you gotta help me. I'm being surrounded."
"Alright." Rosemary smirked. She made a few round balls and started throwing them, but instead of hitting the children they somehow made their way to Lee again. Now he was losing ground.
"Alright, alright. Change! Throw your snowballs that way!" He shouted, pointing at Rosemary.
Rosemary, sensing what was going to come, began making snowballs rapidly. All her efforts failed as the children turned on her. Suddenly, snowballs were coming from all ways and she couldn't keep up. "Fine!" She announced to Lee who was standing there laughing. "I give up. Will you help me now?"
"Of course sweetheart." He came to stand beside her and started throwing a few snowballs at the kids. But when she turned, he scooped up some snow and did the exact same thing to her.
"Lee Coulter!" She exclaimed. "That is so…cold. How dare you?" She spluttered.
Just then, Grace came to the door. "Supper time!" She called.
"Let's go, guys." Lee directed the children. They didn't need much direction though, because they were hungry and cold. He looked over at Rosemary and chuckled. "I'm really sorry sweetheart."
"You'd better be." She muttered. She was afraid to move, she was so cold.
"Maybe playing outside isn't so much fun," he teased.
"It's very fun!" She said, in one last valiant effort to get him with a facewash. But he was too quick, and the snowball flew far and wide.
"It's suppertime. Truce?" Lee asked, extending his hand.
"Fine." She agreed.
"Alright." He chuckled some more as he helped her into the house.
The weekend passed quickly. Lee and Rosemary took Vivian to town a couple times, and spent some time with her one on one. It was clear to Grace and Lillian that she'd be a perfect match for both of them and they for her. As for Lee and Rosemary, they were smitten.
