Lee hurried outside and a cool October air greeted him. He started the car and then rattled off towards their house.
Meanwhile, Rosemary had forgotten all about the phone. She carefully got a cloth wet and then placed it on his forehead. It seemed to help a little, and he stopped crying so hard. He was still thrashing a little bit, but she held him tightly to her. The door burst open and Lee came in, breathing heavily from his fast-paced drive. "Rosie! Are you okay?" Then he noticed she was holding Aaron. "What's wrong?"
Rosemary looked up at him and then started crying. "He's sick, something's wrong."
Lee put his arm around her and led her to the couch, then sat her down.
"I think he has a fever." She continued.
He looked down at his little boy, who was crying again. Lee felt Aaron's forehead, and indeed, it was hot. "You're right. We should bring him to Faith right away. Here, let me take him." He gently took Aaron from Rosemary and put him in his crib for a second. Rosemary slowly stood and then brought the cloth over to the sink and got it all wet again. She came over to the crib and put it back on his forehead.
"I'll go get a couple blankets," she said slowly, turning away. She hated to see her boy crying.
"Wait a second," Lee gently tugged on her arm. When she turned around, he pulled her into a hug. "You're doing great." He said softly.
Rosemary fought against the urge to start crying again as she stepped back. "Thanks. We should go. I'll be right back." She hurried up the stairs and to Aaron and Vivian's room. She grabbed Aaron's special blanket that Abigail had made for him, and then hurried back downstairs. "Alright, let's go." She wrapped Aaron up a little bit to protect him against the cooler weather, and then they left.
They hurried Aaron into the infirmary. "Faith, we brought Aaron." Lee began. "He has a fever and he's thrashing."
"Alright." Faith jumped up. "Put him on the bed and I'll check him over."
"Okay." Rosemary gently laid him on the bed. He had stopped crying again, but he looked very flushed.
Lee looked down at his pocket watch. "Oh, sweetheart, school's out. You stay here, and I'll go get Vivian."
"Alright." Rosemary took a deep breath. "Please hurry back."
He squeezed her arm. "I will. I promise."
Meanwhile, Faith was checking over Aaron. She checked his vitals, felt his forehead, then looked up at Rosemary. "He's stable, but he definitely has a fever and it's not going down. I thinkā¦" she got up and began rummaging through cupboards. "I have something to lay him in." She drew out a shallow basin. "We can put him in this to cool his body off. Go ahead and undress him, and I'll fill it up."
Rosemary nodded and quickly undid his clothes. Faith was right, he seemed hotter than before. Faith put some cool water in the basin and then gently laid him in it, while holding him up to support his little body. "You and I can take turns doing this. I'll hold him for three minutes, then you can. After fifteen minutes, we'll take him out and see how he's doing."
"Alright." Rosemary nodded again. She functioned slowly, just doing what Faith told her to do and hoping that Lee would come back soon. She needed his strength!
A few minutes later, when it was Rosemary's turn to hold up Aaron, Lee burst back in the door without Vivian. Rosemary looked up. "Where's Vivian?"
"She's at Elizabeth's." Lee said, coming around to see Aaron. "Elizabeth volunteered to keep her tonight."
"Thank goodness." Rosemary sighed.
"What are you doing?"
"Faith and I are each taking turns holding him up for a few minutes and replacing the water to keep it cool to bring his temperature down."
"Rosemary, your turn is up." Faith said.
"I'll do it." Lee offered.
"Alright." She nodded. "You can carefully switch with Rosemary." After Lee had held Aaron up for a few minutes, they laid Aaron back on the bed and Faith checked his temperature again. He was sleeping now. "It's hasn't really gone down," she said as she looked up at Lee and Rosemary. "Not enough, anyways."
"What was it?" Rosemary asked.
"It was 103, and now its 101." Faith frowned. "He's also asleep." She walked back to her desk. "I hate to do this, but I need you to keep him awake. Go ahead and feed him or something, and try to keep him awake for about fifteen to twenty minutes. I want to see if his fever rises. If it keeps going down, he should be okay. If not, we'll have to try something else." She walked towards the door.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm going to talk to Abigail quickly. I'm not sure what's wrong, and she might know. I'll be right back, just go ahead and do what I said."
"We will." Lee assured her as the door closed.
Rosemary looked back at Aaron. "I hope he's okay." She reached out her finger to touch his hand. "Please be okay."
"He's gonna be fine." Lee smiled.
Rosemary picked Aaron up and began to feed him. When he was done, she laid him back down on her lap. "Look at him, Lee," she said.
Lee sat down on the bed beside her and looked at the little boy. "He doesn't look very good."
"He feels hot again. Oh Lee, what if he doesn't get better? What if I did something wrong?"
"Sweetheart, you're doing wonderful. And don't worry, Faith will do all she can." Lee said softly as he put his arm around Rosemary.
Just then, Faith came in, followed by Abigail. "How is he?" Faith asked.
"I fed him, and he ate a little. He feels hot again though." Rosemary noted.
"Alright. I'll check his temperature again." Faith immediately got to work. "Looks like it has gone back up. It's now 104." She took a deep breath. "I think the only thing to do is to ice him."
"Ice him?" Rosemary questioned. "But he's so little. How's that going to work?"
"If we lay him on the bed and put a couple blankets on top of him, then Lee, if you could get some ice from Lucas, we could put the ice all around Aaron." Faith explained.
"Of course. I'll be right back." Lee hurried out the door before anyone could say anything else.
When he returned, Faith, Abigail, and Rosemary had Aaron all ready. "Lucas said we could get more if we needed it." Lee said, handing the ice over to Faith.
"Perfect." She began spreading it around Aaron. "I hope this works." After a few minutes, he was covered. "Now we'll wait for about fifteen minutes, and then I'll check his temperature every ten minutes after that."
When the fifteen minutes passed, she checked his temperature. "No change." She checked it twice more, each time reporting that there was no change. An hour passed, and his temperature went down from 104 to 103. Abigail went home to sleep, and Rosemary and Lee sat on the bed, resting but watching over Aaron. Faith kept watching and checking his temperature. Eventually, Rosemary fell asleep and Lee felt his eyes closing. Even Faith, sitting on a chair next to the bed, fell asleep just before dawn peaked in.
The sun was high in the sky when Faith woke up to the sound of Aaron crying. She rubbed her eyes and immediately remembered where she was. Rosemary had just woken up too. "Should I feed him?" She asked quietly.
"I'll check his temperature first, really quickly," Faith decided. She looked down at Aaron, and then checked his temperature. A huge smile came over her face. "It's 98.6 exactly." She reported happily. "Perfectly normal."
"That's wonderful!" Rosemary exclaimed. She nudged Lee. "Lee, wake up. Aaron's temperature is normal!"
Lee opened his eyes. "That's great, sweetheart."
Rosemary fed Aaron, then held him tightly. "I'm so glad you're okay," she whispered as she kissed his soft forehead. She looked up at Lee. "Do you want to hold him too?"
"I'd love to." Lee nodded and smiled.
"I brought breakfast." Abigail called as she walked in. "How's Aaron this morning?"
"Oh Abigail, you're a saint," Rosemary exclaimed as she eagerly took a warm slice of bread.
"His fever is gone and he is alright." Faith said, reaching for the food herself.
"Thanks to you." Lee nodded in her direction.
"It's my job." She smiled. "I think you can take him home whenever you want."
Rosemary and Lee looked at each other, and the same thought was in both of their minds. Rosemary smiled. "So, now?"
"Absolutely." Faith chuckled.
"Thank you!" Rosemary bounced up to give Faith a big hug. "For everything." She finished as she stepped back.
"Not a problem. Make sure you go home and rest." Faith smiled.
Rosemary pulled Aaron close to her and nodded. "We will."
"I'll make sure." Lee assured Faith. He held the door open for Rosemary, and helped her into the car. When they got home, Rosemary looked at the clock.
"Vivian will be leaving in fifteen minutes. Can you go get her, Lee?"
"Of course." Lee nodded and slipped over to Elizabeth's, while Rosemary let Aaron sleep. He was back in a few seconds with Vivian.
"Mama!" Vivian exclaimed as she ran in. "I've missed you so much."
"I've missed you too, sweetheart," Rosemary said as she gave Vivian a huge hug.
"Is Aaron alright?"
"Yes, he's fine."
"I was worried."
"I was too. But I'm so glad to see you and you've been so brave." Rosemary gave her another hug and kiss. "I love you."
"I love you too." Vivian snuggled deep into the hug.
"Viv, it's time for school." Lee said. "I'll bring you over."
"Do I have to? Can't I stay here?"
"No, you need to go. We'll be here waiting for you." Rosemary promised.
"But I want to stay! What if something bad happens when I'm gone?!"
Lee came over and bent down beside Rosemary and Vivian. "Sweetheart, nothing bad is going to happen."
"But it did last time I left!"
"It's not going to happen this time. You can go to school, and we'll be there to pick you up when it's over. Can you be brave?"
Vivian sniffled a bit. "I think so."
Lee gave her a big hug. "That's my girl."
Rosemary opened her arms to give Vivian another hug. "You'll be okay, and Aaron and I will be waiting for you. I love you so much, my brave little girl."
"I love you." Vivian slowly stood up and put her hand in Lee's. Together, they walked out.
When the door was closed and the house quiet, Rosemary felt her whole body relax into the couch. Aaron was fast asleep and the couch was so comfortable. She was glad to see Vivian quickly, and she hoped that her little girl would be alright, but her eyes could barely stay open. She gave into the sleep that haunted her and closed her eyes. She leaned her head back and fell asleep.
Lee got back about fifteen minutes later. He stepped inside, intent on saying goodbye to Rosemary and then leaving. When he saw her, head back and asleep on the couch, he came over and sat beside her, gently pulling her towards his shoulder. Her eyelids fluttered, her hand came across to rest on his, but she didn't wake up. So he kissed her forehead and let her sleep. Work could wait, this was where he needed to be.
