Chapter 37:
The Mysterious Melody
Location: Village Bridge
The Village Bridge is the oldest bridge in the Unova region. However, that doesn't mean that people don't live there. For generations, the bridge has housed many, well, houses.
Amway, a lot of developments had taken place since Hilbert visited. The main additions were the inclusion of a basketball court and tennis court. I am not a sports person, but I liked the additions.
I was just sitting by the side of the bridge, watching the river flow beneath my feet. Just being near it almost washed my Team Plasma concerns away, but I couldn't get ahead of myself. They were still a threat. "So much is going on, and I'm nowhere closer to Hilbert," I said. Just then, I saw something on a rock. It was black and had green hair. It was singing a melody that made me feel even calmer. "Is that… a Pokémon?" I took out my Pokédex, but when I did, it was gone. "W-what was that?" I decided there was no point in chasing it as it could have gone anywhere and with no evidence to which direction it went, it wasn't worth the trouble.
I walked down to the tennis court where I saw two women rallying a ball. When game set was declared, they saw me.
"Oh, hello," the woman on my side said. "Care for a game of tennis?"
I shook my head. "I don't do tennis. Or basketball or soccer or baseball or-"
"How about battles?" the woman on the other side said.
"I do that!" I replied with confidence.
"Okay then. It's time to serve this!" the woman on my side said.
Rosa Vs. Smasher Lizzy
"I choose Whimsicott!" Lizzy shouted, sending out her fluffy Grass Type.
Whimsicott (エルフーン)
083
Grass Type
Windveiled Pokémon
2'04" (0.7 m)
14.6 lbs (6.6 kg)
They appear along with whirlwinds. They pull pranks, such as moving furniture and leaving balls of cotton in homes.
Cottonee -Sun Stone- Whimsicott
"Okay Growlithe, go!" I shouted.
"Whimsicott, Cotton Guard!" Whimsicott gathered cotton around itself, drastically raising its Defense.
"Fire Fang Growlithe!" Growlithe chomped down onto Whimsicott, but Whimsicott's Defense was too high to do anything too special. Except for one thing; a burn. That was handy.
"Now Whimsicott, Mega Drain!" Whimsicott drained a bit of energy from Growlithe, but not much.
"If Physical Moves won't do too much, then we'll use Special moves. Growlithe, Flamethrower!" Growlithe shot fire at Whimsicott. This did a lot more damage.
"Another Mega Drain!" This Mega Drain also didn't do too much.
"One more Flamethrower!" Growlithe shot one more pillar of flames at Whimsicott. The burned dealt the final bit of damage.
"Aw man, guess you won that match."
"Thanks!" I said. "I'm certainly better at battling than I am at serving."
"My turn!" the other woman said, leaping the net and coming over to our side. "Get ready for this!"
Rosa Vs. Smasher Amy
"This time, I'm using Azumarill!" I shouted.
"Lilligant, go!" replied Amy, sending out the flowering Grass Type. "Use Mega Drain!" Lilligant fired a beam at Azumarill, who had its health drained. It wasn't Super Effective though, because Azumarill was Zoroark.
"Zoroark, Torment!" Zoroark started edging Lilligant on. Lilligant was taken aback.
"Mega Drain again!" However, Lilligant couldn't. "Oh, that's right. Use Quiver Dance!" Lilligant started shaking, raising its Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed.
"Zoroark, Night Slash!" Zoroark slashed at Lilligant for a Critical Hit.
"Now Mega Drain!" Lilligant drained some more or Zoroark's health.
"One more Night Slash!" Zoroark did just that, officially finishing off Lilligant.
"Match point!" Amy said.
"Thanks!" I said. "You put up a good fight!"
"If you want more," Lizzy said. "Go to the Basketball Court. The players love battling as much as we do!"
Before I went off, I wanted to ask them about what I saw. "Excuse me. Is there a Pokémon that is known to sit on a rock on the river and sing?"
The two shrugged. "Not that we know of. Sorry," Amy replied.
I understood and went away.
As I crossed the river again, I saw it. On the exact same rock, singing the exact same melody.
"What is that?" I whispered to myself. This time, I was all ears. I wanted to hear what was being sung.
"Melo melo etta melo ett-a melo e-tta meloe-tta."
Once again, I went for my Pokédex. But once again, it was gone. It couldn't be me, could it? Was I seeing things?
I reached the court where a bunch of burly men were throwing hoops. One of them jumped up and dunked (is that the word?) the ball into a hoop.
"Nice one Derrick."
"Keep at is Nicholas."
They spotted me. "Hi…" I said. "No, I don't want to play. But I want to battle."
Derrick threw the basketball to one side. "Sure thing kiddo. I'll go first. Can you dunk on this match?"
Rosa Vs. Hoopster Derrick
"I choose Cinccino!" I shouted.
"Elecatabuzz, shock it up!" Derrick sent out a yellow Pokémon with black stripes and a long tail.
Electabuzz (エレブー)
057
Electric Type
Electric Pokémon

66.1 lbs (30 kg)
Research is progressing in storing lightning in Electabuzz so this energy can be used at any time.
Elekid (B) – Lv 30- Electabuzz
"Cinccino, start with Tail Slap!" Cinccino slapped Electabuzz multiple times with its tail.
"Electabuzz, Thunderpunch!" Elecatbuzz's fist started sparking with electricity. It then punched Cinccino, paralyzing it in the process.
"No!" I shouted.
"Now use Screech!" Electabuzz let out an ear-piercing screech that lowered Cinccino's Defense. Cinccino couldn't move due to the paralysis. "Use Thunderpunch again!" Electabuzz punched Cinccino again in the face with its crackling fists, knocking it out.
"You did well," I told it. "Okay Vibrava, go!" Elecatbuzz's Electric Type moves wouldn't scratch Vibrava.
"Electabuzz, Swift!" Electabuzz fired stars at Vibrava, but Vibrava took it.
"Use Dig!" I yelled as Vibrava went underground. This allowed it to avoid another Swift. "Now!" Vibrava came above ground and attacked Electabuzz. It was a Critical Hit and it went down.
"Nice shoot from both of you!" Derrick said.
Nicolas clapped his hands. "Good footwork out there. But it's my turn now. Get ready for this!"
Rosa Vs. Hoopster Nicolas
"Okay Serperior, go!" I shouted.
"I choose Magmar!" Nicolas replied. Well, this wouldn't be fun.
"Serperior, Coil!" Serperior twirled round, raising its Attack, Defense and Speed.
"Fire Punch Magmar!" Magmar's first caught fire, and it punched Serperior. I was so glad I set up a Coil.
"Now use Slam!" Serperior took Magmar and slammed it on the ground, doing lots of damage to it.
"Another Fire Punch!" Magmar punched Serperior again, bringing it down to half health.
"One more Slam!" Serperior slammed down on Magmar once again, knocking it out.
"And that's a slam dunk from you!"
"Nice one," Derrick said. "Hey, Rosa. If it's alright with you, can we have a double battle next? If you give us an hour to set up of course."
I was down for that. I was getting lots of training done from this. Plus, an hour would give me enough time to see if that Pokémon was there again.
Rather than the bridge, I went by the river close to the rock with the singing Pokémon. And sure enough, it was there.
"Melo e-tta melo melo etta…" it sung.
"Wow," I said as it noticed me. It tried to run away. "No don't! I don't want to catch you! What are you?" I pulled out my Pokédex, this time not allowing the Pokémon out of my sight.
Meloetta (メロエッタ)
154
Normal/Psychic Type
Melody Pokémon
2'00" (0.6 m)
14.3 lbs (6.5 kg)
The melodies sung by Meloetta have the power to make Pokémon that hear them happy or sad.
Mythical Pokémon.
"Wow. You must be rare. Can I hear the song again?" Meloetta just floated there. Then, it disappeared. "Oh, okay. Well, come out when you feel like it. No one is forcing you."
As agreed, I met Derrick and Nicolas back at the court.
"Okay, Doubles time!" I said.
"Yeah, and we're stronger now!" said Nicolas.
Rosa Vs. Hoopsters Derrick and Nicolas
"Azumarill, Vibrava! Go!" I shouted as my Pokémon were sent out.
"I choose Magmortar!" shouted Derrick, sending out a large-orange Pokémon with a cannon on its arm.
Magmortar (ブーバーン)

Fire Type
Blast Pokémon

149.9 lbs (68 kg)

Magby (B) -Lv 30- Magmar -Trade holding Magmarizer- Magmortar
"Go Electivire!" Nicolas shouted, sending out a large yellow and black Pokémon with two wire-like tails.
Electivire (エレキブル)

The instant it presses the tips of its tails onto an opponent, it sends over 20,000 volts of electricity onto the foe.
Elekid (B) -Lv 30- Electabuzz- Trade holding Electirizer- Electivire
"Electivire, Thunderpunch!" Electivire's fist went yellow, and it punched Azumarill for a lot of damage.
"Such power!" I shouted.
"Magmortar, Lava Plume!" Magmortar spread lava everywhere, hitting everyone including Electivire. Azumarill was hanging on for dear life.
"Okay Azumarill, Aqua Tail!" Azumarill's tail went blue, and it whacked Magmortar. It was almost done. "Keep that up!" As I said this, Vibrava made the ground crack in front of it. It then sent a shockwave to Magmortar, knocking it out. "Wow! That's Earth Power! Great time to learn that Vibrava!"
"Electivire, Swift!" Electivire fired stars at both Azumarill and Vibrava. Azumarill was down.
"You did well," I said. "Vibrava, Earth Power!" Vibrava made the ground crack in front of itself and sent the shockwave Electivire's way. It was getting weaker.
"Now use Swift again!" Electivire fired more stars at Vibrava, but the match was clearly mine.
"One more Earth Power!" Vibrava used the Ground Type move once more, knocking out Electivire.
"Great job Nicolas!"
"You to Derrick, and Rosa to."
After that, I decided I had had enough battles for that day. Thankfully, a nice lady had offered me to stay at her place.
As I walked across the bridge, I looked at Meloetta's rock.
It wasn't there.
"Maybe it's left," I said. "But hey. The fact that I saw a Mythical Pokémon is amazing!"
Busy day today, but tomorrow I arrive at Opelucid City. I'm worried I might have given Team Plasma more time to continue their nefarious deeds.
Oh, and one more thing. That night, I heard the melody once more. Maybe Meloetta didn't leave.
