I love how Mason advocates for social distancing in this episode. And, well, every episode for that matter. He is truly a role model for us all.
At first I thought it was simply a glitch in the power system. But then I saw it, one of my computer screens flickered into life and a ghostly suggestion of a face appeared in the static.
The owner of the face spoke with an odd, robotic voice. "Freaks of the world, my name is Kilohertz, and I'm here to speak to you, for you, and about you. I've had it up to here with the way we're treated so consider this fair warning, we have the power and we're not going to take it any more."
These were the rantings of an immature and overly arrogant lunatic. Nothing to be concerned about, except he had infiltrated not only the Genomex computer system, but the power grid also. Alarms were sounding to indicate a loss of power to the stasis system. This arrogant lunatic had the potential to bring us to our knees.
When the young man stepped into my office, he put me in mind of a young boy wearing his first suit to interview for an internship. I had read his file, I knew his age. Yet he did look very young. I already had doubts about his capabilities, and this observation did not instil any extra confidence in me.
"I assume you have heard about this Kilohertz, Mr Renfield, and his invasion of this facility?" I said.
"It's all anyone at the academy's talking about, Mr Eckhart."
"Allowing him to continue to operate could be a disaster for the GSA. The minute the general public gets an idea of those anomalies out there, our work gets harder, and uglier," I said, rising from my seat and turning around. "The last thing we want is public knowledge of these monstrosities. It's bad enough these super powered freaks are out there just waiting to ambush the status quo, but to have this anarchist electronically invade this facility and wreak electronic havoc at will?" I turned back to face Mr Renfield. "We have to stop him."
"I understand completely, sir."
"I see you're in your final semester. I seem to remember that your indoctrination had its problematic side."
"It got off to a rough start, sir, but once I realised everything the Genetic Security Agency has to offer-"
"And everything you and your powers have to offer the GSA," I said. "It's rare that so raw a new recruit is pressed into early service." I wouldn't have been going down this path if I had any other options. Unfortunately, all of my former lieutenants had let me down tremendously. Perhaps taking a chance on someone fresh out of the academy would be worth the risk.
"Early service? You mean a field assignment, sir?" he said eagerly.
"I've come to believe that a man of your peculiar talents could be a boon to us on this manhunt."
"I'm honoured, sir."
"We've tracked the signal to several possible sources around the country, and we've deployed agent teams to investigate," I said, sliding a disk over to him. "These are your FCC credentials. See what you can uncover at WXDV."
"Thank you sir. I won't let you down."
I watched him leave. I couldn't help but think that that was what they all said, very shortly before letting me down.
It wasn't long before Mr Renfield was back. For all that I was told about how I intimidated people, sometimes it seemed like they could scarcely stay away from me. Perhaps I ought to work on adopting an even more frightening demeanour.
"I can't tell you how grateful I am for this opportunity-"
This was not a good time. I held up a hand as I smoothed out the new piece of exo-skin I was applying to my neck. "Don't come any closer. Keep your distance until I'm sealed. If all you've got to share with me is gratitude, Mr Renfield, I'm busy." I turned around to face him, but stayed close to the antimicrobial UV light.
"No sir," he said with a smug smile. "I just wanted to report my data retrieval at WXDV."
"Well, go ahead."
"I'm not sure I understand, sir."
"Report," I said, rapidly feeling my patience evaporating.
"I did sir, that was it."
And with that, my patience was gone. I took a deep breath. "Mr Renfield, I understand they teach a very specific 'keep your superiors in the loop' kind of procedure at the academy, but in the real world, I don't want to hear about anything until the job has been done, regardless of your pathetic people pleasing."
"Sorry sir."
"I don't want apologies, Mr Renfield, I want results. Every day this anomaly is at large endangers our mission. It's time you justified my faith in you and put an end to his reign of terror."
To my relief, the young man simply nodded and left. I sat down and tried to regain my composure.
I had the news playing in the background while I cleaned my glasses, and was startled when it was rudely interrupted by that damned electrical anarchist. "And the rumours are all true. I'm warning every freak out there to pull out their cash. But until then, I'm gonna move a little money around myself and kick some Wall Street ass."
I called my newest lieutenant. "Mr Renfield are you watching this?"
"Watching it now sir," he replied.
"So forget all your life savings and forget about the meek inheriting the Earth," Kilohertz continued. "There's nothing meek about me or any of the other freaks out there who are going to follow my lead. Cause it's the freaks who are going to own this planet, because we're not going away."
"Did you see that, Mr Renfield?"
"Yes sir."
"I want this maniac in custody, or your career is over before it's begun," I said. News of Kilohertz's disruption had spread beyond Proxy Blue and the other crackpot conspiracy theorists. The ability of regular journalists to uncover the actual truth of bizarre occurrences like this was admittedly limited, but when big money was involved, suddenly they would find extra resources to investigate. And if I did not quickly deal with this new mutant, my superiors in Washington would doubtlessly misconstrue this as me directly causing a Wall Street crash. And then no amount of history or insurance claims would protect me from their wrath.
I got a report of Mr Renfield's incompetence from the GS Agents who accompanied him. He had allowed his mark to be literally snatched away from him by Mutant X.
"I gather your hesitation allowed Kilohertz to elude our grasp," I said, keeping my back to him and instead inspecting one of our stasis pod residents.
"That is a complete misread of the situation, Mr Eckhart."
I stood up and walked towards him. "Frankly, I'm concerned about the empathy you seem to have developed for this renegade," I said. It often surprised me how GS Agents thought they were invulnerable, and that other agents would not snitch on them.
"I believe he's a dangerous enemy who should be neutralised," he said, slowly and carefully.
"Nice recitation of the manual, Mr Renfield, but hardly convincing. I'm afraid I might have been a bit premature in rushing you into the field. I think perhaps you might need just a little more training before you go back on assignment."
I had Mr Renfield fitted with a full sensory suit, and watched as the technician altered the modulation to ensure the young recruit learned the error of his ways.
I allowed Mr Renfield a little time for his re-education to sink in before I called him back to my office.
"Can I assume your experience in retraining has had no detrimental effects on your at all, Mr Renfield?"
"Not at all sir. I can't imagine what got into me, Mr Eckhart."
"The answer to that is found in your genetic misfortune. The very gift that makes you so special leaves you vulnerable to hucksters and charlatans, who want nothing more than your utter corruption," I said.
"I understand, sir. And I renew my vows to constant vigilance.
I regarded him closely while he started fixedly ahead.
"Does that mean, I can assume you are ready to go back to work?"
"Absolutely. I'm ready to take on whatever you have to offer sir."
I sat down at my desk and was about to send him back to his duties when all the lights started flickering and the stasis system alarms began sounding.
Suddenly, a man in a tank top crackled and shimmered into existence. Kilohertz, I assumed. He was on his knees on the floor, but nonetheless I pressed the emergency button, calling for security.
Kilohertz pulled himself to his feet and gestured expansively. "Now this is what I'm talking about."
"I'll handle this," Mr Renfield said.
"Hey, it's good to see you," Kilohertz said, approaching the GSA recruit. But his expression changed when he did not get a warm welcome from either of us. "I thought you guys would be glad to see me."
"Glad to see you?" Mr Renfield echoed.
Kilohertz looked around like a trapped animal, and reached towards one of the outlets and begun to turn himself into electrical energy. But Mr Renfield was too fast. He touched and froze Kilohertz in the process of escape. I approached, fascinated by the opportunity to see Mr Renfield's powers in action.
"Nicely done, Mr Renfield," I said, and he visibly swelled with pride.
Mr Renfield's powers were effective in holding the electrical renegade until security arrived to knock him out and take him directly to be prepared for stasis. Adam and his people may have captured him first, but they had been clearly unable to stop him from escaping. I had to wonder what Adam's plans for him had been. Did Adam offer him a place in his team of terrorists? Perhaps there was a mutual supposition that their philosophies would align. But Adam had a lot of money tied up in the stock market, so I doubt they saw eye to eye. But whatever the reason, Kilohertz had preferred instead to align with the GSA. It was a false assumption on his part that we would accept him with open arms, but still, I couldn't help but feel that I had scored one more point against Adam.
