KAGEYAMA
"I think we made a pretty good impression," grins Oikawa. I don't even have to look his way to know he is grinning. Oikawa is two years older than me. He can mature but most of time he acts like a know it all spoiled brat.
"Um hm," I hum as we walk towards the restaurant Kuroo gave us the address to.
"You should be smiling," he replies. "I mean I guess I would be upset if I came in second. Not sure how I feel about this whole roommate thing." I fight not to roll my eyes. Oikawa came in first but not by much.
"Agreed," I reply as I spot Akaashi outside. "You okay?" He looks how I feel. Akaashi is a year older than me but I ran into him a lot during my first year of school playing volleyball. He is quiet and lethal. We have this weird unspoken bond I can't explain. I would hang with him any day over Oikawa. His hair is curling at the ends as it always does.
"Not going to lie," he replies. "I don't want to be here. I want to play, I have a passion for this game but I just want to go home. I don't care to mingle."
"Amen," I reply.
"Who's your roommate?" asked Oikawa.
"Asahi," he mumbles.
"He seems cool," says Oikawa. Akaashi ignores him now heading inside. I don't blame him. I grew up around Oikawa so I am use to this. Other people may not be. I notice a hostess greeting us.
"Volleyball team?" she questions.
"Yes," grins Oikawa. Oh boy. "Do I look like a medalist." She blushes nodding. "So will you be joining our party?" The girl giggles as she leads us down a hall towards a private room. I can hear chatter going on. Here we go. Must be a team player. I can do this!
I enter the room and see my new teammates standing around. It looks like most of them have arrived at this point. I notice the messy hair redhead isn't here. He was seriously annoying me today. I felt like he was trying to make me look awful. The girl leaves us, and I am happy to see there is a meat buffet going.
"This has to be expensive," states Akaashi taking in everything.
"I could get use to this," states Oikawa before walking up to Asahi. Oikawa easily strikes up conversations while I don't. Well I guess I should speak to my coach and trainer at least. I walk over to Kuroo and Bokuto.
"Thank you for dinner," I reply before bowing making Bokuto laugh.
"No need for all of that," he replies. "You did good out there today rookie. I'm getting the stats over to Tanaka."
"I'm sorry who is that?" I ask.
"Oh Tanaka analyses your stats and help us study the competition," explains Kuroo. "The committee hired him two Olympic seasons ago."
"That is when the team started to move up in rank," I point out.
"Smart," says Kuroo before taking a sip of his beer. "Glad to know you were watching. I was coaching the previous Olympic year but that was rough. I am not going to even get into all of that." He doesn't need to. The other coach was old, but his techniques and training were outdated. That is why they were losing. I don't want them to know I feel like that old man is the reason we couldn't win.
"Of course," I reply. "Let me know if you guys need anything."
"Oh, don't worry, we will," says Bokuto before chuckling. I have never seen a guy smile as much as him. I grab a plate and begin loading up. I choose the table where Akaashi is sitting at alone.
"Did you interact?" I ask.
"A little…." he mutters. Well at least I spoke. I begin to eat a bit of my food.
"This is pretty good," I say breaking the silence. "You might want to help yourself. Who knows what the cooks will be feeding us?"
"So true," he replies. "I'll be back." I focus on eating as Oikawa is making his way around the room. I am sure he is going to make it a point to talk to everyone. I am almost done with my first plate when Sugawara and Daichi walk over to me.
"Hey," exclaims Sugawara. "Can we sit?" No.
"Sure," I reply going against my inner thoughts. I go back to focusing on my food.
"You did really well today," says Daichi. "Most of the newbies tend to struggle."
"I'm not most," I state flatly. I don't like being compared to anyone. I am Tobio Kageyama. There is only one of me. I'm not saying this to be arrogant but no one person is the same. Sugawara chuckles while Daichi clears his throat.
"Teamwork is very important," states Daichi. "It is not just having a good coach and training staff behind you. You will be surprised by how much team chemistry can be messed up can affect a team."
"I know that," I reply.
"Do you really King of the Court," states Daichi. I glare at him coldly. I fucking hate that name. Just because I care about my skills, my game, my fucking craft doesn't mean I am king of the court. This also lets me know Daichi looked into me. I got that horrible nickname in middle school. I could never shake it. Small price to pay for giving a damn. "Yeah, I researched about you and your skills. Sad part is your good, exceptionally good but people don't like you." I hold in a growl.
"People don't like the truth," I state. "I don't lie."
"Clearly," says Sugawara. "Enough of that. What do you like to do in your spare time?"
"Train," I reply.
"Um okay," says Sugawara slowly. "What do you like to do outside of that?"
"Research how to be better," I state. Daichi runs his hands over his face.
"You would get along great with Hinata," Daichi. "He loves training and looking things up. I use to be like that in the beginning. Now I am on my way and no need for me to do as much." No such thing. He's crazy. Volleyball is life. There is always things to learn about this sport. It is every changing just like life.
"I doubt anyone has my dedication," I state. Hinata is decent but could be better. The fact he tried to compare me to that runt is an insult.
"Sure, sure," says Daichi. "I'm going to get a drink. You want any Sugawara?"
"Hell yes," he replies. Daichi walks away before he focuses back on me. "You can relax you know. I won't bite." I just look at him because that didn't even sound friendly but flirty instead. He is giving Oikawa vibes. "You don't have to say anything. I know once you get to know people you are kind." He doesn't know what the hell he is talking about. I don't even have friends. My teammates made fun of me not understanding my devotion to my craft. I didn't mind. Look at where I am now. Akaashi sits back down. "Looks good."
"I hope so," states Akaashi. He digs in beginning to eat. I stand up going to get myself another helping. I decide to have an egg roll this time seeing there is one left. I am sure they will bring more out. I reach for the roll the same time as someone else. I look up seeing Hinata.
"Excuse me," he says sternly.
"You're excused," I say pulling on the roll. He doesn't let go.
"I had this first," he explains. "I need you to let go."
"No, I had it first," I reply. I glare at him not wanting him to have it. Just because you were on this team before doesn't mean you get to rule me. He lets go making me feel like I won.
"Since you are just a child, I guess it's okay to let you have it," he replies. My eyes squint at him as he walks away. That little fucker! I literally hiss in response.
"Kageyama, you okay?" asked Oikawa.
"I'm good," I reply with my eye twitching. Oikawa sighs.
"Please tell me you're not starting this shit already," he states.
"Starting what," I reply shifting my eyes at him.
"You know exactly what I am talking about," he states. "You have got to get it together or they will cut you. They have plenty of other people lined in. Lose the attitude." I roll my eyes walking away from Oikawa. I don't have an attitude. That little short fucker was messing with me. I sit back at the table completely shutting down. I didn't want to talk to anyone or do anything else for the rest of the night. Our coach made this super cute speech and all, but I am not feeling it. All I can think is I am going to have to room with this guy. Fucking shit.
