The words of the song don't belong to me. It's from Shirley Serban and I found it on YouTube.
Although the lockdown still wasn't official, the Bellas had chosen to live like they already were in lockdown. With classes and rehearsals canceled until further notice, they had a lot of free time on their hands.
The first things they had done after Aubrey's arrival, was to clean up the house. They also cleared a room were Chloe, Stacie, Jessica and Flo could sleep when they came home from their respective jobs. Of course they sanitized themselves before they entered the house, to help preventing anyone from getting sick.
Different personalities adjusted differently to the new situation and it wasn't any different for the Bellas. Some of them picked up old hobbies, while others spent most of the day in bed watching Netflix and YouTube videos.
Aubrey had observed the girls for a few days and realized things needed to change. They were getting lazy with nothing to do and they were not even in a real lockdown.
She herself had always lived with a strict schedule and although they were limited in what they could do, she thought that it wasn't a bad idea to design a schedule for all of them. Maybe not as strict as her own schedule, but keeping them busy and proactive would help them getting trough this situation.
She first designed a new schedule for household chores. Each girl was assigned to do two chores a day, carefully fitting the working schedules of the four girls in it. But that was only a few hours a day to keep them all busy. At least it was a start.
She also encouraged them to finish any school work they still had and focus on the things they find hard or were they were failing at. But even with those tasks, they still had too much free time on their hands.
Not able to rehearse and doing cardio affected them all emotionally and physically. Singing and performing was one of the things that kept them together for all those years and to be honest they needed to keep practicing.
But how could they in the limited space? It was something that she kept thinking about. There must be a solution to that problem.
The solution to the problem came when she unintentionally overheard a zoom conversation between Emily and her mom.
Aubrey knew the youngest Bella had the biggest problem of them all adjusting to the new situation. Legacy had become overwhelmed and her usual enthusiastic character became more and more silent. With everyone feeling down, nobody really knew how to get their friend out of it.
That night Aubrey had made her final daily round trough the house to ensure that everyone was okay and feeling mentally well. It was a habit she picked up after she saw Chloe and Beca doing it during the mornings and afternoons. So she had took it upon herself to do the night rounds. Partly to keep herself busy from over thinking but also to lift the burden from the two co captains.
She was about to knock on Legacy's door when she heard Mrs. Junk. The young Bella always had a zoom call with her mom before she went to bed since this crazy situation.
She was about to leave when she heard Mrs. Junk singing. It was a lullaby, but not a lullaby she expected. Surely, the melody was right but the words were different. Somehow Mrs. Junk had changed the lyrics to fit the current situation.
Suddenly she got an idea of how she could get them through this situation.
She finished her round and retreated to her own room thinking about her idea. That night she barely slept and by the morning her idea was a full plan that could actually work. Before getting the girls on board with her new plan, she decided to discuss it with Beca and Chloe first. After all they were the captains of the Bellas.
"Chlo, Beca, can I have a talk with you?" she asked them after breakfast.
"Dude, what's up?" Beca asked when the three of them were alone.
"We're all bored. Everyone is getting lazy and this is only the beginning of a situation none of us know how long it lasts" Aubrey began.
"That's the understatement of the year" Beca said sarcastically as she rolled her eyes.
"Go on, Bree" Chloe said as she smacked Beca on the arm.
"Well yesterday when I was doing the last round, I overheard a zoom conversation between Emily and her mom" Aubrey started.
"You know eavesdropping is rude?" Beca asked her.
"Let her finish, Bec" Chloe said as she smacked her girlfriend again.
"I wasn't eavesdropping Beca. As soon as I heard Mrs. Junk, I wanted to walk away. But then Mrs. Junk started to sing. You know she has a 5 range octave so not hearing anything is impossible. Anyway she sang a lullaby to Emily. I think it was to calm her down. But what was different was that Mrs. Junk had changed the lyrics of 'Rockabye baby' to a covid version" Aubrey said.
"That made me think of us. We're an a cappella group. We're all musically gifted. Emily is good at writing, you're good with rhythm and beats. We have Ashley and Lily as beatboxers" she said after a pause.
"So?" Beca asked with raised eyebrows.
"So, what if we search for children songs and nursery rhymes and rewrite them as covid songs? That will keep us busy and we still can rehearse and keep our voices trained" Aubrey said somewhat doubtful.
"Bree, you're a genius. Maybe we can record it and upload it to YouTube if it works out" the redhead exclaimed enthusiastically.
"I didn't think about that, Chlo. But it's definitely an idea that might work out" the blonde responded.
"Actually, it isn't a bad idea at all. Good thinking Posen" Beca said.
"I think it's best to discuss this with the girls after dinner since we're all at home tonight" Chloe said.
They all agreed and went their separate ways after they were done talking.
After they were done with dinner and the dishes were done, the two co captains asked them to go to the living room. After they all were seated, they told them about their new plan to keep them from getting crazy and bored. Of course, Aubrey apologized to Emily for overhearing her conversation. The youngest Bella had told her not to worry about it.
She sang the song her mom made for her so the others had an idea of what their captains were talking about.
(Rockabye baby) (I'm going crazy)
I'm going crazy stuck in my home
Want to go to out, stop being alone
But we can beat this by staying apart
Defeat this virus - each playing our part!
After thinking and talking about it, they we're all aboard. It was something different. They agreed that each of them would find at least two songs that they could work with. Then Emily would see if she could change them and Beca would create a beat for them to spice it up a little.
That night everyone went to bed feeling better than they had in a while. Yes it's was going to be hard, but at least now they had something to do.
