A thick magazine flew across Daniel's office.
"The truth almost got me killed by my own people, Daniel! I had nowhere to go! If I'd told them the truth, I wouldn't have had you or anyone to defend me. They would have killed me," explained Vala bitterly, hoping the tremor in her voice could be passed as anger.
But as always, Daniel saw right through her walls. His posture relaxed and he picked up the magazine to bring it back to her.
"You weren't messing with me, then," he realised quietly.
She sighed dramatically, looking away from him.
"Shut up."
