I gawp at Jade in shock as her words sink in. An ugly feeling rears its head from my torso. "What? F... Four years?! But that means… That would mean that I, you, we're in our twenties?!"
She nods, sighing. "I have no idea what they did to you to cause you to lose all your memories, but I cannot imagine it being anything pleasant. I wanted to videotape a statement from you for the courts, but I guess it is not possible right now."
Jade glances at my leg cast, "We should get that checked out, along with your head injury. But right now we're in danger. Your parents will no doubt hear of your disappearance and our heroic rescue, and will come hunting for us, especially since your dad is a cop. I know jack shit about the doctors here, but to be honest I cannot trust any of them, especially after seeing you shackled to the bed in that private hospital. We'll probably need to go back to LA, but flying on domestic airlines will be a problem seeing that you do not have any id and that you sort of need permission from your parents to fly."
Why do I require permission from anyone to take a flight? I mean, if I'm in my twenties, I am considered a grown-up, right? Surely I don't need adult chaperons?
But before I can ask her any more questions, the guy she mentioned named Beck opens the door and walks in, a wry smile on his face. He passes a paper coffee cup to Jade, who rips off two packets of sugar from his hands and pours them in, swirling the contents. She takes a sip and grimaces, "Even the coffee here sucks."
Setting the cup aside, she puts a hand on her temple and looks at him. "Did André mention when he would be here with that jet of his? We need to go back to California as soon as possible. I'm so sick of all the fried stuff and miss sushi already."
He shakes his head, huffing. "No response from him yet. He did mention that he'll have to land in one of the bigger cities though, so we've got to move from here no matter what. Now that we've exposed our presence, I'm not sure if we can even make it out of here."
Jade pulls out a backpack from the corner, and digs into it. She takes out a blonde wig, a fake mole (they make these?!) and a pair of huge sunglasses. While she puts them on, Beck cramps a beanie onto his head and sticks a fake mustache onto his upper lip.
She plops down beside me after they changed their appearances drastically, kneading my hands before pecking me lightly on the cheek. "I am not trying to pressure you, Tori. But this entire trip will be meaningless if you cannot remember anything, especially important evidence. We can't get back to LA and have you live like a fugitive, ready to be brought back here at any time. But we also need to get medical help for you. So here's what we'll do. We're going to bring you back home, to surroundings that you're familiar with, and get a doctor to look at you. Hopefully being back in the place you grew up in can jog your memory and help you remember everything."
Turning to Beck, she taps him on the shoulder. "Let's get some supplies before we hit the road. We'll need to prepare quite a lot, especially if André does not reply, since that means we'll have to drive all the way back." Jade pulls out a plain black t-shirt and some black shorts from her bag, thrusting them into my hands. "Change out of those hospital garb. And don't step out of the RV or answer the door, even if anyone knocks. We have keys, so stay quiet in here until we get back."
I nod at her as she turns to leaves the room with Beck. Shutting the window and pulling the curtains close, I take off those hospital clothes and put on new ones, pulling on the shorts with some difficulties. On impulse, I decide to remove my bandages. I carefully unwrap them to see angry red blisters and cuts littered all over both of my arms. They look pretty fresh, but they seem to be healing well.
There are still so many questions I need answers to, but at least I got an idea of what's happening, even though I am still trying to get over the shock of the new information I've received. I can't help but feel how screwed up my life has become.
