Pokemon: Spell Version

Chapter 1: The Choice

Warning: Rewrote the chapter because I made some changes to Leo's personality.

The Pokemon World. A wonderful place, you might think. It's lands, skies and seas are filled with wonderful powerful creatures. These creatures are named: pokemon.

They can be trained by people called trainers, become stronger, and then, fight with each other, as some sort of friendly competition.

They can also be used in contests to show their elegance and beauty, being trained by coordinators.

Others, live freely out there, on the wild, living in one of the eight regions of the pokemon world: Kanto, Johto, Hoeen, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola and Galaar.

In each one of these regions, there exist 8 more powerful people, called gym leaders, that can offer you badges if you win in a battle against them. If you earn 8 bagdes, you can fight in the pokemon league. And, if you win in the league, you become a champion.

A lot of 10-year-old kids end up leaving the comfort of their home to have adventures on their regions, just to be a part of this gym challenge, and bring honor to their hometown.

But you probably already know about all of this, am I right? So, let me tell you a different story, or, at least, a different point of view.

Remember when I said that the regions are places where pokemon and trainers live? Well, on those regions we also have Witch Towers. You must be asking: "What is a Witch Tower?".

Well, as the name suggest, it's a place where witches reunite to learn magic, cast spells, create potions and things like this. However, thanks to prejudice, the witches become more and more exiled from the rest of society.

Nowadays, witches are not hunted anymore, but their number decreased a lot. Most of them just decided to live on the towers and never leave it, fearing what pokemons might do them.

Some, however, decided to live in houses far away from Witch Towers and society as a whole, living close to small towns from the regions, like Twinleaf, Vaniville, and Pallet.

Some witches and wizards even married pokemon trainers. So, you probably imagine where this story is going: their children.

Usually, these children choose something pokemon related, to avoid all of the problems choosing magic might cause, but when they don't… well… that's where the story starts.

Right in Pallet Town, a young boy, son of a witch, was lying on bed. Tomorrow, his 10th birthday was going to happen, which meant that he had an important choice to make: Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, or his dream?

"Okay, Leo, just keep yourself under control" said a male young voice to himself. The boy had a light blue hair and blue eyes.

"Just go there, choose your first pokemon, and then, meet all of their expectations" said Leo, trying to convince himself.

After he finished his monologue, he grabbed a male blue vest with a cap. Both had a note written: 'From Dad'.

"Leo, better come downstairs soon, or you will be late!" screamed a voice down the stairs.

"Coming, grandma!" said the blue-haired boy, answering from his room.

"Sigh, today it's going to be a long day" said Leo, deciding to prepare for the day.

Leo, dressed in the clothes he received as a gift, walked towards his grandmother.

"Hello, sweetie. Happy Birthday! It seems like you saw your father's gift," said Delia.

"Yeah, I did. It's not my style, but, I guess I can get used to it" said the boy, on a bitter tone.

"You don't need to use it if you don't want it. Your star sweater is also beautiful" said his grandmother, trying to be supportive.

"Yeah, I know…" said Leo, trying to pretend to be doing it because he wanted to. His grandma wouldn't understand the expectations he needed to meet.

"You have more gifts here. This one is mine" said Delia, handing her grandson an object that looked like a money belt.

"I made this because it would be easier for you to carry your book with you," said the grandmother.

"Thanks, grandma" said Leo, smiling at the gesture. But this was not the only gift.

"Your mother also left this for you. She wanted me to give to you on your tenth birthday" said Delia, handing, with a warm smile, another gift.

"Wow, it's an Artic Stone! It can protect anyone from extreme temperatures!" said Leo, excited about the gift.

He got a little bit emotional at the gift but did his best to hide his tears. Suddenly, the PC of the house started to ring.

"It's probably for you" said the boy's grandmother. The blue-haired boy quickly ran to answer it.

"Hello, Leo. Happy Birthday!" said Brock, at the other side of the line.

"Hey, Uncle Brock" said Leo, trying to sound happy.

"Wish I could have sent my gift before, but I got busy," said the man.

"Don't worry. It's okay" said the blue-haired boy.

"So, you already have plans to what to do next?" asked Brock.

"Well, I never thought too much about it before. It all came so sudden, I thought I would end up having more time…" said Leo, on a pessimist tone.

"You know that you don't have to choose a pokemon, right? It's a choice" said the man, trying to convince his nephew.

"Only if it was that easy…" said the blue-haired boy, on the same tone.

"Well, I need to go now. But remember: You have a choice" said Brock, switching off.

Leo was really grateful that they were trying to be supportive. But it was easier said than done.

If Leo was not what they expected of the son of the greatest pokemon trainer. The boy was always asked in interviews pokemon related questions. It was visible they were expecting a successor.

A few seconds after it, someone else wanted to have a call with the boy.

"Hey, Aunt Misty," said Leo.

"Look if it isn't my favorite nephew!" said Misty, with a smile on her face.

"I am your only nephew" said the boy, on a slightly playful way.

"Still my favorite none the less. Happy Birthday!" said the woman.

"Thanks" said Leo, laughing a little bit.

"But don't let the smiles fool you. I won't take it easy on the gym battle" said Misty, on a determined tone.

"Well, I see no problems with it" said the blue haired boy, on a tone that seemed to be almost emotionless. She noticed it.

"Are you okay, though? You don't seem to be very happy" the woman at the other side of the line asked.

"Yeah, I am…," said Leo.

"If you are nervous, don't worry. If you don't break anyone's bike, everything will go out perfectly," said Misty. The boy giggled at the comment.

"Don't worry. I won't" said the blue-haired boy.

"Well, I have a challenger here. But I will see you soon. Bye!" said Misty, switching off the PC.

"It's better if I get going. A lot of people are going to call me later" said Leo, walking through the door, ready to start his mission.

"Okay, Leo, everything has gone out well until now. You just need to don't do anything out of the ordinary" said the boy, talking to himself.

As he continued to walk through the path to the Professor's Lab, however, he started to hear a weird noise coming from behind.

He ignored it, believing that this was happening due to his insecurity. But the noise was getting bigger and bigger, until the point Leo turned around and saw something flying in his direction.

"Repellere!" screamed the blue haired boy, creating a magic wave to send the creature away. It was just an angry Spearrow.

"Okay, it was just one spell. As long as you don't do any other one, everything will be fine" said Leo, trying to calm himself.

Yes, Leo Ketchum was a wizard. Well, sort of. His mother was a witch and taught him magic when he was young. But still, he knew he couldn't follow his magic dreams, because wizards weren't well received in the Pokemon World.
