Goofy was humming his usual cheerily humming as he was taking some rope to backstage. He was heading to the stage when he noticed his friend Peg just standing in the corridor. She looked very bored and sad.
"Hi, Peg," Goofy said.
Peg looked at Goofy and smiled. "Hi, Goofy!" She went to hug him.
"What are you doin' here?" Goofy asked as he hugged her back. "Just gettin' some me time?"
"Not exactly," Peg said. "All the patrons have arranged their own meeting with the managers and all of their wives including me had to go with them, sit outside the office and do nothing but just shout at each other!"
"Oh, so you're just gettin' some quiet time, are ya?" Goofy asked.
"Can I come with you, Goofy?" Peg asked. "I'm very interested to see you where you work."
"Why, sure," Goofy said. "But just be careful. Backstage work is a very hazardous business." As he stepped forward, he tripped on the rope and fell forward down the steps. But he wasn't hurt and he just did his goofy laugh. "See what I mean?"
Goofy took Peg backstage. She sat down on a giant empty crate and watched as he did his job. She was impressed with what he did. "This is very impressive, Goofy. You are very good at your job."
"Thanks, Peg," Goofy said.
"How's Sylvia doing?"
Goofy's face fell. "I'm afraid she had to leave me some weeks ago. Her mother was very ill and she felt that she had to go move officially back to Salt Lake City. She even quit her job as the head college librarian."
"Oh, Goofy, I'm so sorry," Peg said.
"Nah, it's okay," Goofy said. "We're still remain' friends and we're keepin' in contact with each other. So far, her mother's doin' swell and Sylvia's got another job in a library there. How about you, Peg? How's your new family coming?"
Peg sighed. "Things aren't going so great for me, Goofy."
"Somethin' wrong with that investment and pension company you work at?" Goofy asked.
"Things couldn't be any better, business wise. It's just that my partner and I are not connecting with each other as we used to. I guess I never really did. I guess I needed someone in my life to help me to get over how Pete let me down big time and that I could take Pistol with me but not PJ. That's two men I've had in my life and they've all let me down. I don't know if I've picked the wrong men or if it's just me."
"Nah, it's not you," Goofy said. "You're a great woman, Peg, and you've always had been since I knew you in high school."
Peg broke down into happy tears and hugged him. There were times like these that she wished that Goofy didn't have to leave their high school when he had to move away from Spoonerville. She always wondered how different her life could have been if he did graduate at Spoonerville High School instead of the school he did graduate from.
"Mr. Goof?"
Goofy and Peg broke off their hug and turned to see Roxanne approaching him.
"Hi, Roxanne," Goofy said. "You here for some peace and quiet too? Is it getting heated up there?"
"You're right on both counts."
"Well, you've come to the right place. Oh, I forgot. How's the research going?"
"I've done a lot of it, actually," Roxanne said. "It explains a lot why Max couldn't make contact with me at all since I moved to Jamford and it's even more upsetting than I thought."
"Well, sit yaself down here and show us your research," Goofy said.
Roxanne sat on the crate and showed Goofy and Peg a lot of stuff she got out of her white handbag. There were old letters, birthday and Christmas cards. She said she wrote to them to Max during and after her treatment in Jamford hospital. There were how she was doing in hospital, when she got out of hospital, when she finished high school and which college she going to and birthday and Christmas cards. She thought she sent them to Max all these years and only learned two weeks ago that her dad stopped them from reaching him and kept them in his log store intending to use them for getting the fires for winter started. She confronted his dad and tried to talk about why he wanted her to stop seeing Max and get married to Hugo who she didn't even want to marry but he arranged it with Hugo's dad. He said he did so she could be with someone who would protect her (when he abused her – verbally, emotionally and even physical) but she knew that he did it so they could get more money and become wealthier.
"If only I didn't get ill and had to leave Jamford, none of this would have happened and I could have at least remained in contact with Max in some way." Roxanne started to break down with tears.
"There, there," Goofy said, as he hugged her. "I don't know if this makes you feel any better, but I've not been keeping in contact with Max either. He hasn't told me where he moved into his new place."
"Really?" Peg asked. "He just moved out and not told anyone where he has moved?"
"It's not his fault."
Goofy, Peg and Roxanne turned to see Michaela there.
"Then whose fault is it, Michaela?" Goofy asked.
"The Angel of Music, Mr. Goof," Michaela said. "She is his manager now and I believe he is living with her now."
"Do you know where her place is?" Roxanne asked.
"No, I don't."
"Well, how do you do this Angel of Music?" Peg asked. "Is she a friend of yours?"
"It's too complicated to explain," Michaela said. "All we must do is do what she wishes. If one single order gets disobeyed – either intentionally or unintentionally – there will be consequences." Then she left, leaving the other three confused and not knowing what to do.
"Oh, I forgot," Peg said, as she looked through her grey handbag. "Goofy, in two months, I'm throwing a birthday party for my two grandkids and you are invited." She gave him an invitation.
Goofy read it. It said, 'You are invited to a costume party for the second birthday of Patrick and Penelope.' "Gosh, thanks, Peg. I can even come by earlier to help you, if you like."
"Oh, Goofy, that would be wonderful!" Peg cried happily. Then she frowned. "Unlike their grandfather, who isn't going to help AT ALL!" Then she turned to Roxanne. "I know we just met, dear, and I know we don't know each other at all, but you're invited to this party if you want and can get away from that awful husband of yours and relax for a bit."
Roxanne took the invitation and smiled as she read it. "Thanks, Peg. I'll try to come."
Then the backstage had two more visitors. They were Frank and Hugo.
"What are you doing here, Peg?" Frank demanded.
"Just helping a friend doing a difficult task!" Peg snapped. "Is that such a crime?"
"Well, have you finished?" Frank snapped as Peg angrily joined him to walk out. "Because I have other stuff to do, you know!"
"Like watching another game and eating junk food while I clean the house up after another busy day at the office!" Peg snapped back.
While they continued to argue, Hugo approached Roxanne. "What are you doing down here, dear? This place is cold and dusty and –"
"She has been very helpful, sir," Goofy said. "You should be proud of her."
"Oh, I am," Hugo said. "Thank you for keeping her company during my long and gruelling meeting with the managers. Come on, dear. It's time we went home."
Before she could say a single word, he swept her off her feet and walked away.
"Bye, Mr. Goof," was all Roxanne could say as she was dragged out.
Goofy noticed that her stuff she tried to send to Max years ago was still on the crate. As he picked them up, he wondered what he could do to help.
"Hey, Goof!"
Goofy jumped as he turned to face his boss Mr. Bouquet looking angrily at him.
"What are you doing just standing there?" Bouquet asked. "Get back to work!"
"Yes, sir!" Goofy replied, as he went back to work and crash into some metal buckets while he was at it.
