Since Max didn't need to be at Jamford Stadium to get ready for tonight's concert until at least four o'clock, Roxanne suggested that she could give him a whole tour of Jamford, which he gladly agreed to.
As Roxanne showed him everything Jamford had to offer, Max thought it wasn't a very big town, but a very beautiful and awesome one nonetheless. He already knew that the motel, the Jamford park and the Jamford Stadium and he knew all those three places were lovely and awesome. So when he discovered more of the town and saw its tall skyscrapers, cafes, restaurants, shops, library and zoo, he thought it was a mystery why this town was not very well know despite its qualities. But the one thing that impressed him the most was Jamford Beach and the massive seafront next to it. It was a beautiful beach with its warm white sand, small but beautiful rock pools next to the big beautiful blue sea. And the seafront was vast as it was stunning and full of beautiful restaurants, cafes, shops and small garden beds and trees on it. It was Roxanne's favourite place in Jamford as well. She told Max that she always felt happy whenever she came here because it helped her to relax from stressful times, especially after all the bullying she had to suffer for the last five years.
"Thank you for the tour, Roxanne," Max said, after they sat at a table at an Italian restaurant and ordered pizza. "This town is totally awesome."
"It was my absolute pleasure, Max," Roxanne said. "After all the good you've done for me since you arrived here, you deserve it. And it is so great to be with you again. You always were great to be with, you still are and you always will be."
"Thanks."
"So, how's your dad doing? All I know is that he's busy backstage at that stadium in Tanchester."
"Well, he's upset that his latest partner Sylvia Marpole had to leave him last year. They were in a great and happy relationship for the last three years, but she had to leave him because her dear mother was very ill and needed to be looked after. She had to even quit her job at the head librarian at the college we attended."
"Oh, dear," Roxanne said. "I'm so sorry to hear that."
"But like you said, he's keeping busy and he's happy," Max said.
"Was this Sylvia the closest thing you had to a mother?"
"Well, she and my dad were very happy together," Max said. "And she was a very nice, caring and intelligent lady, but I've never really viewed her as a mother figure for me personally. I was eighteen when we met her and that time I was trying to start to live my own life. If I had to say who was the closest I ever had to a mother figure, I would have to say it would be my former neighbour Peg, who's PJ's mom. She looked after me sometimes when my dad had to be away and she usually gave me great motherly advice every now and then. Even after she divorced Pete and moved on, Dad and I would see her occasionally and she would still treat me as if I was her son."
"Oh, yeah, I know Peg," Roxanne said. "She's invited me to her grandchildren's party in a few days. Did you get your invitation?"
"Yeah, but I haven't got a costume. Been too busy to even think about one." He had to chuckle. "Roxanne, I know your mom and your twin sister tragically died and I know Stacey was the closest you've ever had to have a sister, but did you ever have anything like a mother figure?"
Roxanne sighed. "Not a mother figure, but there was this very nice old lady in my neighbourhood who would look after me when my dad had to go somewhere and he couldn't take me with him, which was a lot. Her name was Mrs. Gherkins. She was a lovely lady and she was like a grandmother figure to me. She helped me become the person I am today. She was the one who taught me that kindness, love and helping others are the most important things in the world and nothing else. That was something no one else – not even my dad or my friends – ever taught me. I wouldn't have become the person I was if I didn't spend time with her. Apart from you, she's the one I miss the most from Spoonerville."
"Do you still keep in contact with her?" Max asked.
"I did write a few letters to her and she did write to me back the first few times, but then she didn't. I think she might have passed on, but I don't really know because I've never been to Spoonerville ever since I left it. If I did, then I would check on her and see you for a bit." She sighed again. "Max, there's something I would like to know, but I won't make you answer if you don't want to. After I left Spoonerville, did you have any other girlfriends?"
"I did, Roxanne." Then Max explained that when Roxanne left Spoonerville, he started a relationship with Lisa. He never forgot that Roxanne and Lisa had never been the greatest of friends. Max explained that Lisa broke up with Chad who had been cheating on her with a lot of girls behind her back for a long while, so they decided to try a relationship and they were happy with it. The more he spent time with her, the more he learned how nice and caring she actually was and she told him that the more time she spent with him, the more awesome she discovered he was. They broke up their relationship when they graduated high school only because of different college interests, but they remained in contact with each other and have remained good friends. Then Max explained that Lisa has become very successful with founding and being editor-in-chief of the most successful fashion magazine in the world called Graceful and for being a patron of the wildlife charity called Freedom for Wildlife. She had tried many boyfriends since they broke up, but none of them had lasted as long as Max. A long honest relationship like with Max, not a long cheating one like with Chad. He was the only ex-boyfriend she remained friends with.
Then Max said that her first girlfriend he had in college was Lola. She was African-American, who usually wore a lot of green clothes and white shoes. For most of their first year of college, they were in a very happy relationship together. Then she had to leave that college when her sick grandmother back from where she became very ill and she needed to go and look after her. But like Lisa, Max remained friends with her and kept in contact with her. Lola was now living in California where she was a marine biologist and learning about sea life to support it the best way.
Then the last one Max had was Mona.
Roxanne gasped. "The famous Mona from the hit tv show, Willows For Spring? You were her boyfriend?"
"Yep. And in answer to your next question, I didn't leave her. She left me." Then Max explained that he met her during the last year of college and she was studying to be an actress. They got on so well that Max invited her to meet his dad for Christmas 1999. They kept their relationship going after they graduated college and moved into a flat together. They were very happy. Then he told the story of when Mona left to audition for Willows for Springs and she said she would come back to him when she could, but she never came back to him at all. When he saw her on TV at her new TV show's premiere, he learned that she dumped him and moved on to be a relationship with the leading actor. She broke up with him without even having a conversation about it.
"Oh, you poor thing," Roxanne said sympathetically.
The worst part was that Max didn't know what he did wrong. They did have conversations, including arguments like every couple did but they always worked things out and always had a good laugh every now and then. He got a job to help pay the bills and he helped her cook and clean up the flat and assisted her in everything she needed. He didn't know what he could have done to be any better. All Max knew was that it scarred him for life and made him never want to try to have a girlfriend ever again. He felt that he was meant to be alone and that he was not meant to be loved by another girl at all.
"Completely untrue, Max." Roxanne took and held his hands. "Now, you listen to me. You are a very special person and deserve to be loved. And you will find someone who will realise that. I know I was lucky to have a wonderful boyfriend like you when we were living in Spoonerville. And every time I say I'm lucky to see you again, I really mean it every time."
Max smiled. "Thanks, Roxanne."
Then the pizzas arrived and they all enjoyed them, unaware of a dark figure hiding behind a tree on the other side of the seafront.
"Someone does realise how special T-Rax is. It's me! Why can't he see that? If he can't, I'll have to make him see it. And I will make him see it!"
