The corridor was dark, cold and dirty as Roxanne continued to walk through it, but she was feeling very proud of herself of being able to get past through that hidden door and continue to find Max. This mission reminded her of the mystery books that she used to read when she was younger but experiencing this thing for real was something she had never done before. She was scared, but she was more worried about Max and thinking about him being in danger motivated her to continue to rescue him.

As she carried on, Roxanne continued to keep her eyes peeled for any booby traps or ambushes. Then suddenly she found herself trapped in a metal net and up in the air. Wondering how she never managed to spot that, she tried to find a way to make a hole of this net, but she couldn't. Then she heard a metallic noise coming from below her. She looked down to see the floor below her opened, revealing a giant pool full of ice. Then the net started to lower down.

Roxanne continued to try to break out of the net, but she couldn't and the net kept getting lower and lower into the pool of ice and then it stopped just before it touched the icy bottom. It soon became so cold for her hands that they became so numb for her to continue trying to be free from the net. As she shivered, she worked out that this icy pool was like a giant freezer. This must have been a trap set by the Phantom so she could freeze any intruders before they could find her. All she could do was just shiver and hope that Max would be okay.

Then Roxanne noticed that the net was moving again, but this time it was going back up. Then she was no longer shivering and her hands were no longer numb. Soon the net was free from that icy dungeon and then it was lowered down to the firm ground again. Then it got opened and Roxanne got helped by someone.

"Thank you," she said, before she looked at that someone, who was none other than Michaela Crawford herself.

"Are you here to help rescue Max?" Michaela asked. "Why didn't you join the others?"

"Why didn't you?" Roxanne asked. "Why didn't you tell anyone about this? And how do you know this Phantom so well?"

"It's a long story," Michaela said.

"Well, if it's still a long way to go to this Phantom's home, surely you have enough time to tell me while we go to rescue Max? The more you tell me, the more I can help you and Max."

Michaela sighed. "All right. We have no time to argue. But you must – I repeat MUST – do what I say when I say so without question if you want to survive here and save Max. Do you understand?"

"I understand," Roxanne said.

"Good. Now, follow me."

While the girls continued to walk, Michaela started explaining everything like she promised.

"First of all, this corridor is full of booby traps set by the Phantom," Michaela said. "I've been coming down this corridor for years and I know where each and every trap is and how to avoid it. I had to find out all about it myself. The Phantom didn't invite me and show me."

"But why do you come here when you do?" Roxanne asked. "And what's your business with the Phantom?"

"Well, this Phantom was once a friend of mine."

"Was?"

"That's right. Was, not is." Then Michaela continued to explain that she met the Phantom one day after a trip to the library during the summer of 1996. She was studying some diseases because her mother had a serious undiagnosed disease as far as she could remember and wanted to know how to help her the best way she could. This was the very reason why she wanted to become a doctor and she managed to get a part-time electrician job at the Tanchester Square Garden so she could earn and save enough money to go to medical school. She managed to get into the Tanchester Medical School and had been attending it for the last four years and continued to work as an electrician in the now-destroyed stadium to keep money coming in for herself and her mother. She never knew or meet her father. There weren't even any photos or important documents with his name on it. And her mother never talked about him because she knew who he was.

That day Michaela met the Phantom was when she was getting bullied by her school bullies, even though it wasn't a school day but a day in the summer vacation. She called them all-year-round bullies. But she wasn't attacked by those bullies ever again because both she and they saw a figure who was the Phantom wearing her usual black clothes and her mask. She never seen her without the mask before when Max took it off two hours ago. After the Phantom told Michaela that to repay her, she must do what she told her to do without question or failure or she would be an even worst bully than those bullies who bullied her, starting with getting a job at Tanchester Square Garden for afterschool and during the summer holidays and so she can make sure that the Phantom's orders are obeyed.

"I've never like doing her orders," Michaela said, "but the only other choice would be to face harsher consequences. I feel trapped in this mess as much as Max is."

"You and Max aren't the only ones." Roxanne then told Michaela about how she had to leave Spoonerville and Max when she was very ill and after she graduated school in Jamford she was arranged to be married to a wealthy, but selfish, rude and arrogant man child who was the son of her dad's very best friend. She tried many times to divorce him, but her husband abused her for even thinking about that and her own dad said her selfish man child husband is the best thing for her in her life. So she knew how it felt to be trapped like Max and Michaela.

"Wait here," Michaela said, stopping Roxanne from moving.

Roxanne looked ahead and saw nothing, but a big carven tunnel didn't look dangerous.

Michaela picked up a giant rock and threw it through the tunnel. Then that rock split and landed on the rocky floor in pieces.

"Just as I thought," Michaela said. "Invisible lasers. They're still here."

"How do you get past these lasers every time you can down to see the Phantom?"

"Just watch me."

Roxanne was amazed as she watched Michaela doing a lot of backflips as she made her way through the invisible lasers. She didn't stay in a straight line; she backflipped all over the tunnel as if she knew where the lasers were and how to avoid them. When she reached the end, she went into a corner. As Roxanne wondered if Michaela abandoned her and her story of being the Phantom's prisoner was just a con, she saw the invisible lasers become visible red ones. Then Michaela came back.

"I tried to turn the lasers off completely, Roxanne," Michaela called to her, "but I can't. The best I can do is make the lasers visible. I can't do any more on my side. The rest is up to you."

Roxanne gulped as she looked at the lasers. She was worried about getting hit those deadly red lasers, but once again she decided that Max was definitely worth doing this. If the Phantom kidnapped Hugo, she would not go through any of this for him, let alone all of it.

Roxanne saw the laser that was just above her and she passed it by crouching. Then she spotted the second and third laser that was in front of her and she rolled under them. She managed to roll, dodge, crouch under and even jump through all the lasers. Then she came to the final one, which was the biggest one of them all. She couldn't roll under it or jump over it, so she decided to try to backflip to get over it. She had never been good at it in high school and she never needed to do it since then. She took a deep breath as she hesitated. Then she decided to close her eyes and backflip over the laser.

"Open your eyes, Roxanne," Michaela said. "You're over the laser."

Roxanne opened her eyes and saw that she had got over the red laser.

"Well done," Michaela said, patting her on her shoulder.

"Thanks, Michaela," Roxanne said, as she panted. "This Phantom must be a real genius to do all these things."

"Well, I never asked her these questions personally because I'm not allowed," Michaela said, "but judging by the mysterious actions that happened in the stadium, she is many things. A songwriter, a magician, a builder, an architect and an electrician. A very unknown and very talented overachiever. Too bad she chose to do bad things with her talents."
