Bucky's POV:
My heart stopped as I heard Arianna let out a pained gasp, before she went limp in my arms.
I barely managed to catch her, when the male nurse rushed back into the triage.
He came back a moment later with a gurney and two more nurses.
"Please lay her down." He instructed.
I quickly followed his instructions, watching in horror as they wheeled her away.
I tried to follow them only to be stopped by the nurse.
"Sir, you can't go back there. You need to wait here." She calmly said.
"That's my wife! I have a right to be with her!" I growled, as I tried to push past her.
"We understand that you are worried about her, and we will do the best we can to help her get better. But you need to wait out here." She calmly replied, as a security guard eyed me.
Again with all the calmness.
Did they not understand that my wife and kid's lives are at stake! What the fuck is wrong with these people.
Fucking hell!
"You will be the first person we speak to, once we know what is wrong." She said before walking away.
I stopped myself from pushing past those doors yet again as I paced back and forth in the waiting area, occasionally growling under my breath.
"James." A voice spoke from behind me.
Clint and Nat had finally arrived, and they apparently brought two guests.
"Clint…" I whispered as they rushed to my side.
"What the hell happened?" He asked me as soon as he was in front of me.
I blinked back tears as my fear and the memory of what happened a few minutes replayed in my head over and over.
Unable to answer as both of them stared at me worriedly.
"Leave him alone, Clint. She started having cramps on our way to Target. When we got there they got a lot worse. So , we brought her here. Everything seemed to be fine until she got called to the back...Before she could go she passed out." Yelena explained as my phone began to ring.
I gave them a pained nod before I sighed and turned to answer the phone.
"Hello?"
"Bucky, dear, hi, I just wanted to know at what time I should be expecting you to arrive today?" My mother's voice asked.
"I won't be." I replied after a quiet minute.
"What? Why ever not? Did something happen at work?" She asked, in a tone that had me closing my eyes and remembering that disappointed pout she gets when she receives news that she doesn't like.
"What? No. It's because—" I swallowed. "Because Arianna is in the hospital. She's— She's pregnant." I finally said, knowing this was no way of telling her the news.
"What? How? Don't answer, James, I already I know how. Who is the father?" She squawked.
I almost groaned, wishing she didn't ask these questions.
"I am." I whispered, wincing as I anticipated her reaction.
Fuck, I could feel it already. It was like dropping a fucking mentos into a diet coke bottle.
Briefly reminding me of the days I told her and my dad that I was joining the army.
She had cried as if I had just told her I was going to die, and my dad smiled and told me he was proud of me. Total opposite reactions.
"What?!" She screeched into the phone, causing my ear to ring as I winced away from the phone.
And... there it was.
"Look, I'll explain everything at a later date. Right now, I can only tell you that Arianna and I are having a baby together, and that we're apparently married. She's in the hospital. I don't know how she is, but I will call you with details when I have them, okay? I'm sorry but I have to go now." I rushed out before hanging up and shoving the phone into my back pocket.
I tried to take a deep breath to calm down but there was no use. I couldn't calm down until I knew if Arianna and our baby were out of danger.
Dropping my forehead on the wall in frustration. I inhaled and exhaled slowly in a poor attempt to calm myself down.
"So, I take it you told Mama Barnes that you are married and knocked up my sister…?" Clint asked, raising a brow at me as he leaned on the wall.
"Not the time to be smug, Barton.". I muttered with closed eyes as I took another deep breath.
"Nope. Definitely not…" He whispered.
"Then why are you?" I asked in a tight voice.
"Look, I want to thank you…" He finally said, changing the subject.
I turned to look at him, confused, before turning back towards the wall.
"For what?" I whispered, frowning.
"For keeping her safe, when I didn't. For loving her when you didn't need to. And for protecting her, even when didn't have to." He replied in the same soft tone.
His words surprised me. Shocked me even.
How can he be telling me these things when she's here?
I felt like more of a failure as I thought about everything that happened in the last few weeks.
Oh god, had it really only been a matter of weeks since we got together? Made love?
Why was this happening?
I shook my head feeling like an utter failure.
"Don't thank me. I failed her… Just look at where we are… Look at where she is…" I whispered, turning away as a tear fell down my face.
"Hey, man, don't say that. You did. I'm not lying to you. Who is the one person she's opened up to since coming back here? You. And who has been there every time she needs a shoulder to cry on? It certainly hasn't been me, her older brother. And certainly not Natasha. She turns to you because she trusts you. More than me or Natasha. She doesn't do that easily. If anything, I can almost guarantee that if she finds out you're out here beating yourself up over something that neither of you could have controlled, she'll filet your ass." He told me, amused.
I was speechless, and slightly amused to realize he was right.
She would be pissed if she saw me blaming myself. But I couldn't help it.
Her being here bothered me so much.
"Look, my sister has always been on the shy side. And judging by what she told me last night, you are the one person who has given everything she's needed. Don't start blaming yourself for shit that is out of your control. It'll create problems where there aren't any." He added.
Before I could respond he reached over and grabbed me by the shoulder, pulling me towards the chairs.
"What are you—?" I asked, trying to loosen his hold on my shoulder, only for him to swat me upside the head.
"Knock it off, Barnes." He warned as he walked past Nat and her sister.
He pushed me, causing me to fall heavily into the seat, before sitting down next to me.
"There, now, much better." He mumbled to himself, before turning to look at me. "You know that might just be her needing fluids, right? This is completely normal, especially since she's been throwing up a lot from what Nat told me earlier. She could be just dehydrated from all the vomiting… Wait, how are you responsible for her ending up here? That wasn't your fault." He replied.
"I failed to realize she wasn't ok. I should have forced her to stay and rest at your house. Maybe then she wouldn't be here if I did. Fuck, I am the worst husband in existence." I mumbled miserably.
He scoffed before he started chuckling and shaking his head. "You and I both know that my sister doesn't like being told what to do. Besides, my mother in law was starting to stress her out, we could all see that. That wouldn't have worked either. " He laughed.
I sighed, shaking my head, as I realized he was right.
My sweet Arianna is stubborn as a mule, and hates being told what to do.
While that little quality is usually a pain in my ass, it is what makes her a damn good lawyer.
So, I can't be too mad about it.
I got so lost in thought I didn't realize Clint had turned and begun talking to Yelena and Nat about something or other.
"The family of Arianna Barton?" A doctor called out.
I quickly shot out of my feet and rushed towards the man, along with everyone else.
I could feel my heart begin to race as tension filled the air, while we surrounded the man.
"How is she?" I finally asked, feeling the tension on my shoulders grow.
"Fortunately, she is out of danger. She was quite dehydrated, and her blood sugar had gone down a great deal. We have her on an IV drip, that's hydrating her slowly. We gave her a small snack as soon as became conscious. That is all we can do at this point." He explained.
I sighed in relief, as the tension evaporated slightly. Until I realized he didn't mention something. Or rather someone. "What about the baby? How is the baby?" I asked.
He frowned, looking down at the chart, before looking back at me. "Right. She is pregnant. She needs to be placed in bed rest. We tried contacting her ob/gyn but couldn't get a hold on them." He explained.
I could feel my eyes widen as they filled with tears. "Will she— Will she miscarry?" I asked, concerned.
"No. At least, I don't think so. She seems perfectly healthy besides the dehydration, the low blood sugar could be due to lack of nourishment. We won't know for sure until tomorrow afternoon. She needs to stay the night for observation." He said.
Clint looked over at me, clapping my shoulder in a comforting gesture before turning to look back at the doctor. "Can we see her?" He asked.
"Of course, are you all family?" The doctor asked.
We all nodded once, waiting tensely for his response.
"Direct family?" He asked, eyeing me.
What the hell was his problem?
"I'm her older brother. This is my wife and her sister, and that is her husband. Any more questions, doctor?" Clint asked, starting to get annoyed.
The man shook his head, before sighing, "Follow me." He said as he turned.
Nat and Yelena quickly grabbed their things before we all quietly followed him towards the elevator.
"She'll be alright." Clint whispered as we walked into the elevator.
I sighed, nodding wordlessly as we rode up.
A/N:
