Its's been a little over a week and Lucas was having a great vacation. He was hanging out with his two best friends, Duster and Kumatora, when he felt a strange and sudden illness of fever, daze and.. Hunger?..
''Damn we should get you home. You OK there?'' Duster said with concern.
''Y-yeah.. I think so.. sorry guys.''
''Ahh don't sweat it Luc, it's late anyways.'' Kumatora replied. ''I just hope you dad doesn't freak.''
''Heh.. Yeah.. He gets a little overprotective of me, at times.''
The sun had set. It was overcast, with a nearly full moon peeping out from the clouds, now and then. Flint was in the middle of cleaning a big pot he used all day to cook stew, when the door suddenly opened. He looked back, and saw Duster, Kumatora and Lucas enter.
''Good evening.'' Flint greeted the other two.
''Evening.'' Duster and Kumatora responded
'' Is something the matter?'' Flint asked, confused
''Seems Lucas has gotten a little sick.'' Duster commented
''Oh.'' Flint felt Lucas's forehead. ''Hmm.. Seems like you got a mild fever there, Lucas.''
''Yeah. I noticed.'' Said Lucas, poking at his dad.
''Yeah yeah, go get some water Lucas.'' Flint turned to the other two. '' Thank you.'' He nodded.
''Anytime man.'' Kumatora said, proudly.
When they left, Flint looked back only to see Lucas had taken a large sausage the size of a cucumber out, and began to eat it.
''Lucas?''
''mffh?''
''We just ate..''
''mff-fh *gulp*. I'm hungry.''
Flint proceeded to watch with concern as Lucas scarfed down the entire sausage.
Lucas prepared and went for bed, while Flint was repairing a tear in one of his shirts. He couldn't really focus though. He worried too much about Lucas, occasionally eyeing him in his bed, off to the side. Of course had it just been a mild fever, Flint would have thought nothing of it. But Lucas eating that much, especially after a pretty big dinner, was abnormal.
When he himself went to bed, he noticed Lucas moving and making sounds in his sleep. That normally never happens. Only during nightmares. Should he wake him? He didn't make the usual noises, when he has nightmares. Was he more ill then we thought? Why didn't he just heal himself, then.
Thoughts and questions kept racing through Flints head, until he eventually exhausted himself to sleep.
While not a nightmare, Lucas did dream something.
He was outside at night, running around the forests and plains of Nowhere isles, chasing animals, with a big pale full moon in the sky. At times he would look at the moon, fascinated by it. Hypnotized, even. Filling him with a strange new sensation. sometimes he could even hear howling. Even stranger, he enjoyed it.
Morning came, and Lucas was feeling just fine. Almost like yesterdays illness never happened.
Over breakfast, both Lucas and Flint discussed what just happened last night.
''Hmm... Odd.'' Flint muttered
''Right? And for some reason I wouldn't stop looking at the moon. I mean I tried, but I-I couldn't.'' Lucas paused for a moment ''And.. For some reason.. I liked it.''
They sat there, pondering for a moment.
Flint sighed. ''Well we should at least keep an eye on you, so as soon as you feel something, come home. Okay?''
''Yes dad'' Lucas nodded in agreement.
''Man, that sounds weird.'' Kumatora commented. ''Ya sure it ain't gonna happen again?''
Lucas had met Kumatora at the village square, and started up a chat.
''Well I promised dad to hurry home if i felt sick again, so I think we got it.'' Lucas replied with slight uncertainty.
''Yeah, ok. Got any plans for this afternoon?'' Kumatora asked.
''Not really. Just visiting Claus and mom at some point.'' Lucas noted with sadness in his eyes
Kumatora padded him on the back and smiled.
Lucas just smiled back and went off.
After having acquired some lovely flowers, Lucas arrived at his two family members grave site.
He sat down in front of the tombstones. Tears started to swell in his eyes as he Looked back in his memories.
His mothers sweet and chipper voice. Her brown hair adorning her soft face and the vibrant warm red of her favorite dress. The warm loving touch that always was there to brighten up his day.
His twin brother who sounded exactly like him self, except more courageous and energetic. his face mirroring Lucas's almost perfectly, and the vibrant orange barely kept hair. The attachment they had to each other and the absolute annoyance he could be.
Both of their heartbreaking sudden deaths.
Remembering what wasn't here anymore could be exhausting, even when mostly having moved on. Lucas knew of a spot among the nearby sunflowers, perfect to lay among and remembering the good times. Laying there reminiscing while watching the blue sky, Lucas slowly dozed of, with an occasional tear going down his cheek.
''Mom.. Claus... I miss you...''
