Naruto was infuriated by his team. They had gone out on a mission to a war-torn village to seek out any survivors. Sadly there were not a lot. So they had gathered up all the survivors and stuck them in different interrogation rooms. Including all the children that could speak. So now he was sitting across from a three-year-old who was crying for his mother. His teammates thought that since the kid had lost his mother at a young age and looked a little like him, he would be perfect to interview him.
"Hey, kid. My name is Naruto. Can you tell me what your name is?" he asked softly as to not scare the child.
"K-Kawaki." the kid answered.
"Okay. Kawaki. That's such a nice name. Can you tell me what happened?" he questioned.
"I was with my mommy when we heard a boom. She made me hide and then big men broke into our house. They took h-her away!" he sobbed.
Naruto felt for the boy. His mother died before he was born, he never actually got to see her get hurt. So he went around the table to comfort the child. He was only a baby.
"It's okay kid. We're going to try to find your mother. In the meantime why don't we do some coloring." he tried to change the topic to relax him.
"O-kay" the kid sniffled.
So for the next hour or so he spent time with the kid. He even got him to laugh. He felt happy with the child, seeing as he had his own on the way soon. He couldn't wait to get home to his wife and speak to his son in her belly. He thanked the gods every day that his child didn't have to experience what this child was going through.
"That's such a good drawing Kawaki! I should show it to my friend Sai!" he gushed.
That's when they heard a soft knock on the door.
"I'll be right back okay?" he asked.
"You promise?" the child begged as he grabbed onto his leg with his small hands.
"Yes," he replied genuinely.
Naruto stepped out of the door to find both Sakura and Shikamaru staring at him. They seemed to be looking at the child in pity as well.
"What is it guys?" he asked.
"His mother is a part of the dead," Sakura told him.
"Oh." he said out of shock.
"We trust that you'll be able to tell him?" Shikamaru said bluntly.
"Yeah. Wait, what's going to happen to him?" he asked.
"He'll likely get sent to the orphanage unless some kin comes to claim him," Sakura answered.
The thought filled him with dread. The kid was only three. He was literally a baby. When he was three he had to fend for himself since the orphanages refused to take care of him. Although this kid didn't have the nine tails in him, he was a foreign kid. They weren't treated well either. He refused to subject the child to that type of treatment. He looked up to find his friends staring at him. He knew they could see the gears turning in his head.
"I'm taking him home with me." he declared.
"Naruto, you can't just take a kid home with you." Shikamaru said bluntly.
"Then give me whatever paperwork is necessary. I'm taking the kid home with me forever, not just temporarily," he demanded.
Sakura said they would have the documents to him shortly and he walked back into the room with the kid.
"You came back!" the kid shouted excitedly.
"I sure did bud," he responded as the kid hugged his leg.
"I have some news buddy. Your mommy was hurt really bad, she's gone to heaven now." Naruto said somberly.
"Oh no!" the kid sobbed.
The kid sobbed and sobbed and sobbed and it hit him hard. It just made him trust in his decision that much more. When the kid finally stopped sobbing and began to sniffle, he decided he should tell him the news.
"Do you want to come home with me?" he asked.
"Really?" the kid asked eagerly, wiping his tears away.
"Yes. I want to adopt you. That means take you home permanently. You'll become my son." Naruto explained.
"Yes!" the kid screamed.
After that, they decided to look at the photo album the kid hid with until they were dismissed. It was clear to him that his mother loved him very much. He sent a promise to her, wherever she was, that he was going to take care of him. He knew he was going to receive an ear full from everyone when he came in the next day, but he was more concerned with getting the kid home. So he dogged everyone's questions and jumped home with the kid sleeping in his arms.
"Hinata. I'm home," he whisper shouted to his wife who was on the couch.
"Oh, Naruto-kun. How was your day?" she asked as she waddled over to him.
"It was...eventful. I have something to tell you but don't freak out." he started.
"Okay." she replied cautiously.
"You have a new son," he said with a nervous smile.
That was when she noticed the black and blond-haired child in his arms. He was hidden underneath his coat, snoring away.
"Oh." she gasped.
"Listen Hinata. His mom died in a war and they told me that he was gonna be sent to the orphanage. I couldn't let that happen. I mean he's just a baby, he deserves to be cared for. He deserves a home, and I knew you and I could give him that." he rambled until she cut him off with a kiss.
"Naruto-kun, you're amazing." she praised.
He looked down at his little wife in awe.
"You never fail to be selfless and kind. Of course, we'll adopt him. He's precious." she said as she stared up at him in admiration.
"Oh, Hinata!" he called out as he carefully hugged his heavily pregnant spouse.
At that moment, Kawaki woke up and noticed the strange woman. Naruto let him out of the jacket and held him as he examined Hinata.
"Hello, what's your name?" she asked.
"I'm Kawaki. What's your name?" he asked back.
"It's Hinata, I'm Naruto-kun's wife," she answered.
"You're big." he blurted out.
"I'm carrying a baby." she laughed.
Her laugh made him laugh and before they knew it they were all giggling. Kawaki had made a place for himself in their small family in such a short time, and he was here to stay.
