CHAPTER SIX
Newt
As I looked down at the girl crying in my arms, I knew that I wanted to protect her. I had known her for less than 24 hours but I knew that I never wanted to see her like this again. In this moment, I made a promise to myself. I would do I everything I could not to let any harm get to her. I tried to pour all these feelings into the hug.
Eventually she stopped crying and let go of me. I felt cold from the loss of touch and part of me wanted to grab her again. I didn't. Instead, everything that happened came rushing back. Anger surged through my body and I felt like punching something. Turning back to Eleanor, I noticed her looking off into the distance.
"Eleanor?" I asked, she faced me, "Do you think you can tell me what else happened this morning? Why he would have said something like that to you?" She thought for a moment before shrugging her shoulders.
"I don't know. Maybe he really did think that was what happened?" I narrowed my eyes at her suggestion, doubting it.
"Anything else?" I questioned, "Anything weird he did, for example?" She looked uncomfortable and began to fidget.
"Umm… well, he had his arm around me and was rubbing my back and stuff," I felt the anger at Lenny heighten in my veins, before willing myself to calm down. He hadn't technically done anything wrong yet.
"Did you try to stop him?" She shook her head.
"But, he did say….he said…" I moved closer and gently touched her left shoulder as a form of encouragement.
"He said that he would never do anything like that without my permission and that, that he could show me if I wanted." She finished softly. The fury came back and I let go of her and began pacing. I had to go find Lenny and Alby, but I couldn't do it in this state.
Taking a deep breath, I looked over at her watching me.
"Come on," I said, gesturing towards the end of the trees. I began to move forward before realising Eleanor hadn't.
"Newt?" she called and I faced her, "What's going to happen?" I sighed and rubbed the back of my neck.
"We'll call a gathering and decide there," At her confused look I explained, "A gathering is where all the keepers decide on things like punishments and rules." She nodded, still looking like she didn't fully understand.
I walked back to her, took her hand and gently pulled her after me.
"Come on, everything will be explained later." I told her as we walked through the deadheads.
Eleanor
It wasn't until we left the trees that I realised Newt and I were still holding hands. He was walking slightly in front me, seemingly determined on his destination. Wherever that is. As we walked, I looked out over the glade, more specifically the people in it. I was searching for one in particular and was sure Newt was doing the same. I spotted him when we passed the tables that were set out. Apparently, it was almost lunch time, I hadn't even had breakfast. My stomach grumbled.
I was hoping that no one would take much notice of us but, of course, that didn't happen. Almost exactly as I spotted them, Lenny and his group of friends spotted us. I could hear them muttering between each other.
"Hey!" One of them shouted, I couldn't tell who, "Newt's got the greenie!" This caught the interest of some of the other boys nearby. The only one I recognised was Gally.
"Hey Newt! What are you doing with the greenie, shank?" Another voice called out. Looking over at Newt, I could tell his jaw was clenched and he was doing his best to ignore them. He began to walk faster.
"Guess that's the kind of boy the greenie likes." Newt and I both stopped dead, turning to look for whoever called that out. I turned and saw the last words fall out of Lenny's mouth. He had a wide grin on his face and was staring at me. I wrenched my hand out of Newts grip and curled them into fists. Upon seeing his face, I felt an anger that I didn't know was possible.
"The kind that takes advantage of her when she's sleeping." Lenny continued. I stormed towards him, hardly aware of what I was doing. Something inside me had taken over. Lenny was still smirking as I got closer but I saw a flash of worry when I didn't slow down. In the corner of my mind, I could hear Newt calling out for me but I didn't pay any attention.
"Don't. You. DARE TELL LIES TO ME." I shouted at him. If anyone hadn't been aware of what was going on before, they did now.
"What are you talking about…Eleanor?" He asked me, with a false act of innocence. That was it. I stormed right up to him and, without pausing, punched him right in the jaw. He stumbled and groaned, clutching his jaw.
"Eleanor," He said. I punched him again, square in the face.
"You don't deserve to call me that," I spat at him. Even though he was in pain, he smirked.
"Oh, I'll call you whatever I want." I shouted and tackled him to the ground, straddling him and raising my fist. I could faintly hear people moving towards us and yelling at me to stop but I paid no attention. All I could hear was Lenny as he whispered,
"I quite like this position." Then I lost it. I began to punch him, over and over. Who the hell did this guy think he was? I punched and punched, not satisfied. I felt something break beneath my fingers and blood washed over my hand.
I paused, looking down at him. What had I done? His face was a mess, covered in sores and blood. But even looking at him, I didn't feel any remorse. He deserved it.
I felt rough hands pull me off of Lenny and I didn't fight them. I looked around, expecting to see Newt, but instead it was Gally. He pulled to my feet and held the sides of my shoulders when I swayed.
"Greenie, what the hell?" He muttered. Gally glanced over my body and I expected to feel uncomfortable, but didn't. Somehow, I knew he wasn't doing it in a creepy way, rather checking to make sure I was fine.
"You okay?" I nodded, then shook my head, then looked up and nodded again.
"I'm fine," I told him firmly.
"Let's get you somewhere else." He said, putting an arm under mine to make sure I didn't fall. I was feeling slightly woozy and grateful that I knew I wouldn't fall over. I glanced to see where Newt was but couldn't catch sight of him in the crowd of boys.
Instead, I asked Gally where we were going.
"There'll be a gathering." He told me, heading towards a wooden building nearby. It was big but not as large as the one I had slept in. Once inside, he directed me to a wooden chair placed in the middle of the far wall. In front of it were rows of chairs. I sat down and Gally told me to wait here while he went and got everyone else. I nodded and he left.
Newt
When I saw Eleanor march up to Lenny and punch him in the face, I didn't know what to feel. I was shocked. I watched, stunned, as she tackled him to the ground and began to punch him. I didn't know what to do.
Luckily, Gally was quicker than me and rushed forwards to pull her off, even though she had already stopped punching by that point. I looked on as Gally checked her over, hooked an arm under hers and then began to walk off.
I shook myself out of my stupor and made to follow them when I felt a hand on my arm. Turning around, I saw it was Alby.
"Newt. I need you to gather the other keepers and tell them we're having a gathering." I looked over at Eleanor with Gally before nodding, and going to find and alert the others.
I would talk to her later.
