Stage: Yoshi's Island
Fighters: Mario, Yoshi x18
Rules: 2 Lives Classic Mode
Mario got outside of the pipe to find himself in a weird place that he didn't recognize. There was a huge, happy pink heart in the background, which was connected to a tree. The floor was slightly curved down, with the shape of an open book, and there were some platforms around. Suddenly, Mario noticed various eggs breaking around him, and popping out from them happy lizard-like creatures with big eyes, large muzzles, long tails, small red parts on their back which could serve as saddles, and paws which oddly looked like small boots. They came in various colors, but they all looked exactly the same. They stared at Mario, who didn't even listen to the voice saying: "Ready, GO!"
He was shocked by his newfound opponents. He really didn't want to fight them. Every single memory he had about them was playing on his head, and that made him even more nervous. These creatures weren't his friends.
They were his saviors.
Year: 1956 (24 years before 1981, Donkey Kong Circus' opening)
It was a terrible day. The Mario family's Legendary Stork, which was tasked with delivering the boss's two babies to their mother, had been attacked by young Koopa king Bowser's army due to a rift in space that made his castle and Yoshi's Island appear on Earth. The Stork eventually delivered its package, but was horrified after realizing something: one of the babies was missing! They wore two red and green caps with a letter symbolizing each other's names; the red one was named Mario, and the green one was named Luigi. Mario was the one who was nowhere to be found.
At the Yoshi's Island, a bunch of cries could be heard. The Yoshi went to check what was making so much noise, finding the human baby which luckily happened to land on their island. They realized that the baby must have been stranded on the island for some reason, and assumed that the cause was the Koopa Kingdom's young, grumpy, greedy monarch. They picked up the baby and decided to go look for answers. Sure, it might be a dangerous journey, but the baby's safety would be worth it. The entire Yoshi population worked together and not only delivered the baby back to the Stork, but also defeated the Koopa King, named Bowser. They waved goodbye to the young child, and made sure to remember him very well.
At the same time, the child was waving goodbye to them, watching them from below and making his very first memories. He especially recalled how much danger he had gone through. And how, no matter what, the Yoshis put up with his crying and tried to do their best to help him. Therefore, he decided to use them as a role model. Despite what would happen, or in what conditions he was put, he would never give up and would always try to find a way to help and protect those he cared about, more specifically, his slightly younger brother Luigi. He would also try to look heroic and courageous in every situation, even in his daily life. So as soon as he found out that his facial hair started appearing, he made sure to stop his beard from growing, and instead decided to focus on growing a mustache. Luigi, inspired by his brother, decided to do the same. Eventually, when the Mario Bros. arrived to the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario and the Yoshi partnered up again from time to time, eventually becoming very close friends. The entire race admired Mario with a loving passion, and the plumber did the same for them.
The Yoshi were heading at full speed towards Mario, who was still desperate to find a way to win without actually harming them. No matter how much thought he put into it, he couldn't figure anything out. So he decided on one thing: if he was going to defeat them, he was going to do it in the order they showed up. It was the least he could do to say goodbye to them respectfully, before he returned to his journey.
Mario began by hitting a few Yoshis with quick combos, and then sent the first one flying away with a Smash Attack. Mario then realized that the Yoshis were actually quite light this time around, and smashing out one of them by just throwing it away confirmed that fact. However, Mario had to be wary. The Yoshi had a special digestive system which separated inanimate objects from living beings, and turned the latter into eggs when they ate them using their long tongues. The eggs that came from eating were used as ammunition, although they looked exactly the same as a normal Yoshi egg.
For the first time in his life, Mario experienced those effects firsthand when one of the Yoshis swallowed him and turned him into an egg. It felt really…awkward. He tried to break free from his oval-shaped prison, noticing that he was accumulating damage as the Yoshi who caught him punched the egg. When he finally broke free, he kept smashing the Yoshis away, never forgetting about beating them out in order. A few of them threw small eggs at him, which knocked him back a bit, but he quickly got back on track. The last Yoshi tried to do a ground-pound move like he used to do, but he quickly dodged and attacked with his Spin Move, which he dubbed the "Mario Tornado". The Yoshi was smart and hid itself in its egg shield, but after it hatched, Mario dashed forward and knocked the Yoshi away, thus ending the fight.
"GAME!"
Standing alone, Mario felt like a terrible person. He didn't feel like a winner; he felt like he murdered the entire race.
He hoped that, at least, his respectful sign was of some meaning.
Luckily for him, there was a meaning.
A bonus 50,000 points that the voice gave him as a reward for being considerate.
Finally Mario understood how Kirby felt like. He knew that he was angry for getting his world taken away, but he didn't realize that it wasn't just the world, it also was the things inside it. Mario felt terrified at the thought of seeing everything that he cares for actually disappearing and not being able to do anything about it. He decided that he would avenge not only the Yoshi, but also the Mushroom Kingdom. With renewed determination, he walked forward, ready for the next stage.
