Elliot's phone chimed, he smiled as the name Liv was displayed across the screen. He had been waiting to hear from her since he dropped her off earlier that morning and was hoping to meet up with her again. The night before was still playing on his mind, nothing happened but felt like something happened. This was a whole new territory for them and they was tension building. The more time he spent with her away from work the more he found himself missing her. His heart sank a little after he read her text,
'Hey El, i just got home. Today went fine. I'm pretty tired so might try catch an early night. See you tomorrow x'
The message didn't really give too much away, typical Olivia. Elliot's mind went into overdrive. Did something happen? Is she upset? Was she pushing him away? Damn it Liv. His first reaction was that he just wanted to get into his car and drive over to Olivia's apartment to find out for himself, he knew she would probably get pissed off at him or not even answer the door so thought it was best to hold off on that idea. He replied to her text to see if he could convince her to see him,
'Everything ok? I can drop by and bring dinner?'
She never responded, an hour went by with still no word from Olivia and Elliot was growing more anxious by the minute. Elliot slumped back into the couch a took another sip of his beer and ran his hand down his face. He stated at his phone that was on the coffee table in front of him and picked it up again opening his text screen to Olivia,
'Liv, everything alright?'
He was hoping for a response this time but knew he probably wouldn't get one. Was this the beginning of her shutting him out. Olivia couldn't allow herself to become reliant on Elliot, that's not the type of woman she was, but lately had found herself comfortable letting Elliot into her world outside of work. He was her best friend after all and she was his.
He decided he would take a chance and go over to Olivia's apartment anyway. He knew Olivia better than anyone, whenever she began to push people away it was when she needed someone the most, someone to be there for her for once. She was someone everyone else could confide in and gain support from, her compassion and empathy for victims, the love she had for her friends that had become her direct family over the years, everything about her radiated a beautiful soul inside and out no matter the shitty things she had been through throughout her life. She made more of an impact to people's lives than she could ever understand.
Elliot pulled up in his Jeep outside Olivia's apartment building, he knew she didn't necessarily want him there but he just couldn't stay away. He needed to see she was okay, really. He couldn't see any lights on from her windows so he waited a few minutes and contemplated his decision, what if she was asleep but then again, what if she wasn't. He got out of his car, locked it and crossed the street heading towards Olivia's building.
Emma stared silently out the car window watching the city lights fade as they headed home. This weekend had been bittersweet for her, she had envisioned meeting Olivia for years imagining scenarios of how it would happen, where it would happen, Olivia's voice, her smell, her personality. The woman who had been existing for all these years without her. Emma couldn't help but feel torn, she loved her mom and dad and they had given her everything but she still felt a connection to Olivia. She felt like she had a lump of guilt building in the pit of stomach for wanting more from Olivia like she was betraying the mother that raised her, betraying her father, all the family that loved and supported her. They were her family and always would be, but so was Olivia.
Josh kept glancing over to the passengers seat as Emma remained quiet. She wasn't her usual chatty self playing with the radio or have her face glued to her phone.
"Hey kiddo, everything okay?" He asked exchanging his attention from her to the road.
Emma took a deep breath "Yeah I guess."
"You wanna talk about it?" He asked cautiously.
Since Emma's mom died Josh tried his hardest to take on both roles and keep a close relationship with his daughter. Teenage girls were hard sometimes, all the emotions, the arguments, boy drama and all he wanted to do was support her and keep her safe. Everything he was entrusted to do.
"Not really, dad" she sighed as she looked over at him. "I know you want me to talk about things with Olivia, but it's fine. It went better than I could have imagined, but it was a lot."
"Just..if...or whenever you wanna talk, I'm here. I know your probably don't want to talk to your old man" he joked, "but I'm here."
"Thanks dad" she smiled.
"You're mom would be so proud you today" he said softly.
Those words hit Emma and stirred the guilt that was still brewing inside her. Would she be proud? Or feel betrayed, jealous, scarred? She had to shake those thoughts off.
Emma simply gave her dad a weak smile, a look straight out of Olivia's books. The Benson genes were strong, the big deep brown eyes, the jawline, when she smiled be enough her nose would crinkle, even down to the way Emma had Olivia's pouty frown. It really was like mother like daughter.
The television provided enough of a distraction for Olivia but she was definitely not paying attention to what every comedy reruns that were on the screen. They quietness of her apartment was sometimes her biggest enemy, she thought she would be used to it by now because she had always been alone. The background noise of a television or music seemed to always bring her enough comfort Her knees were bent close to her body as she still nursed her glass of wine as her mind was swirling with so many thoughts at once it almost felt like she was lightheaded or that could just be the wine. She took another sip as she stared out the window blankly to the glow of the city lights when a knock at the door brought her back to reality and took her off guard and made her jump slightly. There was a knock again.
"Liv?" Called a familiar voice through the door. She should have known her would show up eventually.
"El, it's late. I don't really feel like talking" she called out as she rested her head against the back of the couch.
"We don't need to talk then" he called back leaning his head against her door.
Olivia sighed and walked over to the door, she opened it without even looking at Elliot and walked back to take her seat on the couch. Elliot took no time to follow her closing the door behind him, he notice how dark her apartment was with on the light of the television illuminating her face. He sat down on the opposite side of the couch creating just enough distance for her to make her still feel comfortable. She picked up her glass of wine again and took a small sip as he watched her closely.
"I'm fine, Elliot" Olivia said it a slightly more frustrated tone.
He just wanted to be there for her, be that person that shows up for her for once and is her support. Something she never had growing up or even in past relationships, people always set her up just to fail her again. She never asked for help and was the first to push people away but Elliot was going to let her do that anymore, she was too important to him to ever lose her.
"I'm sure you are Liv" he replied softer trying not to get his ass kicked out in record time.
"Then why are you here?" she turned to face him.
"I wanted to see for myself that you're 'fine'" he didn't mean to sound patronising but he really did just want to make sure she was okay.
Olivia stood up from the couch and walked towards the kitchen, "Well i am Elliot, you can go now."
Elliot followed her to kitchen and watched her as she poured herself another glass of wine. "Olivia." he said warningly.
"What?" she shot him a threatening look.
He took a few steps closer towards her "Liv, you're clearly upset about something.."
"Thanks Detective, I'm sure i'll be-" she said mockingly.
"Fine?" he finished for her looking at her with those big baby blues searching her eyes for the answer he wanted.
"Shut up El" she glared at him as she pushed past his body and made her way to her bedroom. "Go home Elliot, we have work tomorrow" and closed her bedroom door. Elliot stood in kitchen for a minutes before moving towards her bedroom, he paused for a moment to see if he could any noise but he room remained silent. He knocked a few times "Liv?' She didn't answer, he took a moment to decide whether he should go in or not. The thought occurred to him that he had never actually been in Olivia's bedroom, there had never been a reason to. He had been in her apartment a hundred times before but her bedroom was her private space that only held every intimate part of Olivia's life and body. He knocked again, when there was no answer he opened the door gently and entered her bedroom. He instantly got a strong hit of her perfume, it was a subtle sweet aroma that was so familiar to him. Her room was neat and and quite sophisticated, of course it was. It had a very neutral colour scheme of charcoal greys, white and a bit of black thrown in. Olivia was a gorgeous woman that had an effortless beauty to her but she was always content with choosing darker, monochrome colours in her wardrobe choices and was carried onto her bedroom. His fell to the bed where he saw Olivia curled up into the fetal position, she hadn't even bother to pull covers over herself. The sight made his heart ache.
Elliot approached the bed and kneeled down next to her, he reached out and put his hand on her arm. "Liv, what happened today?" he asked softly. He felt her take a deep breath but didn't answer him. Typical Olivia Benson move, push people away when she needed them the most but Elliot was going to leave her like this.
"Liv, honey-"
"Elliot, just go." she half snapped as she sat up and reached for her wine glass again.
"No, I'm not leaving Olivia." he replied more firmly as he leant over to her side table and switched the lamp on.
"Stubborn son of a bitch" she mutter under her breath.
"Likewise" he said as a small smug smile appeared on his face and she rolled her eyes. "Now talk Benson" he added while the mood was lighter.
She sighed and tilted her head, "Nothing went wrong El" she said softly "I enjoyed every bit of today" as she paused and took shaky deep breath "It was saying goodbye that was the hardest part." She looked up at Elliot with tears brimming ready to escape her eyes. He looked into her big brown eyes and felt his heart ache for again, those eyes that have seen so much pain and hurt .
"Hey, it's not goodbye this time" he said
"I know" Olivia whispered with a soft smile. Elliot continued to rub her arm gently. She finished what was left in her wine glass in silence, she decided she needed another. As she stood to get up from the other side of the bed from Elliot she took a few wobbly steps, he quickly stood and was beside her almost instantly to steady her. She tried to brush him off, she knew he was only trying to help but as always one them had to be stubborn.
"Liv, maybe you've had enough for tonight.." as he tried to take the glass away from her hand.
"I'll decide when I'm done!" She snapped pushing past him.
"Olivia.." he called as she made her way out the bedroom and headed towards the kitchen.
Olivia had taken out a half empty bottle of vodka and a glass. She poured a decent amount of alcohol into the glass and took a decent sip. That familiar scent brought back the memories of her childhood and nights of her mother blacking out after drinking almost a whole bottle of the poison. Elliot walked into the kitchen to the sight of Olivia drowning her sorrows, he had seen her drink before at the bar or when the pair would share a few drinks and either one of their apartments but this was so unfamiliar sight. He could see the pain she was desperately trying to drown.
"Liv, I really think you should call it a night-" he said cautiously, she was close to breaking point now.
"Afraid I'll turn out like my mother?" She glared at him as she took another sip of straight vodka.
"Liv, you know that's not what I meant" his eyes pleading with her.
"Maybe I am just like her, it's in my genes after all!" She yelled, now with tears falling down her cheeks and wrapped her arms around herself. "I couldn't even keep my own daughter!" She said as she broke into a sob and walked backwards until she bumped into the wall. She hated that she was cornered in the kitchen, she had nowhere to escape from Elliot now as she felt herself becoming overwhelmed with emotions she had no control over.
"Oh sweetheart, don't...don't do that to yourself. You're not-" he stopped his words and walked slowly towards her, he pulled her into his chest and wrapped his arms around her as he felt her tears soak into his shirt. Olivia's sobbing was like a dagger to his soul. He had never seen her like this, she was always his strong willed, headstrong partner that could hold her own and keep up with a male dominated workforce, she was a badass and he loved every single inch of her for it. But seeing he like this meant she trusted him enough to let her guard down and was completely vulnerable in that moment.
He knew these emotions she was finally letting out had been building internally for almost eighteen years, never truly letting herself feel the lose she experienced, never talking to anyone about how she felt about the situation. But Elliot was here and she was letting him in, he could take whatever verbal abuse she was ready to throw as long as he knew he was there to support her and take care of her. He hated the way she was always so quick to blame herself for things that were beyond her control, hating herself, she always so quick blame herself for things that were not her fault, create so much self doubt and hatred towards herself for someone who was so beautiful inside and out. He hated every person that had hurt Olivia, disappointed her, told her she was less than her worth.
He held her in his arms for a few minutes until her could guide them over to the couch where she instantly curled her frame up against Elliot's body. Her sobs started to subside after a while as Elliot rubbed small soothing circles on her back until she eventually gave into sleep. He knew after their little sleepover last and the amount of alcohol she had consumed she should be in her own bed. Her gentle gathered her body into his arms and walked her into her bedroom and tucked her in. Olivia shifted slightly in her sleep.
"Stay" she mumbled to Elliot "don't leave."
His heart thumped in his chest as he heard her words, there was no way he was leaving now. He took off his shoes and jacket and slide onto the empty side of her bed, Olivia instantly moved herself to Elliot's side as he slipped his arm around her. The warm of his body brought her instant comfort as she fell into a deep sleep.
"Sweet dreams Liv" Elliot whispered and kissed her forehead.
