Author's Note: I actually ended up finishing this halo early. So, I started on the next one. That's never happened before in the history of the Wasteland Project. But, here we are. I got the inspiration for tonight's halo by the real-life case of Zack and Addie in New Orleans. I first saw the case on an episode of Haunted History. I have been sitting on this plotline for years and I have finally been able to use it. I hope it has turned out well. I already started on next week's halo. For now, enjoy this week's halo.
Trigger Warnings: Suicide, mental illness, gore, and mentions of necrophilia and cannibalism
Halo Seven: Eito:
This is a love story gone wrong. Around six in the morning, twenty-four-year-old Sasaki Eito jumped from the roof of the Urawa Royal Pines Hotel. The police picked up the body. They found an eight-page note in his back pocket. The first line began with, "I am taking my life to make up for the one that I took. Please forgive me." At times, the notes seem to be rambling on and on. The person he claimed to have murdered was never mentioned. Still, the police had to go and investigate.
Back at his apartment was waiting for a house of horrors.
-Two Years Earlier-
Eito was over the moon. He had been riding high with his new girlfriend. Theirs is a cute little love story. Before we get there, we have to talk about Eito for a bit.
To the guys in the Toramaru, it was surprising that Eito got a girlfriend in the first place. From what they have observed, he was pretty much a lone wolf. It took Rocchi to make the first move in high school. Initially, Eito couldn't understand it.
"Why do you want to be friends with me so much?" he asked. Rocchi shrugged.
"You just looked kind of lonely, man," he said.
"Huh?" Eito asked. Rocchi put his arm around his shoulders.
"I just don't want to see you looking so gloomy all the time," he said.
"Do I really look like that?" Eito asked.
"Yes!" the future gang leader said. Even back then, Rocchi had a strange charm about him. He could easily woo over anyone—male or female.
Eito made a strange addition to the Toramaru. But his boys never questioned it. Pretty soon, he found his people in the Toramaru.
Still, he felt rather lonely. There was a relationship before the fated murder-suicide. Her name will not be used in this case. For now, she will be called K-chan. She was older than him by one month. K-chan was quiet and shy. Surprisingly, it was Eito to make the first move. He met her at a neighborhood barbeque. His older sister dragged him out.
"Come on," she said. "I refuse to have a NEET for a brother." He didn't even try to argue. Whatever she said went. So, Eito threw on some clothes and headed out to the barbeque with his sister and brother.
Already, he wanted to go home. While his sister chatted with her friends, Eito started to try and look for an escape. That's when he saw K-chan. Like him, she didn't look so comfortable with being here. Eito had to admit that she looked pretty cute with her long black hair to her shoulders. The big pink butterfly clips in her hair made her stand out. Something inside of Eito told him to go over and talk to her. She looked up to see him walking over to him. They stared at each other as waiting for the other to speak.
"Uh… hi…" he said at last. She looked away, blushing.
"Hi…" she said back. Silence lingered between them. Eito tried to struggle with something to say. She tried to think of something to say too.
"Eito-kun!" someone yelled behind them. The teenagers looked up to see his sister walking over them with a cup in her hand. Eito sighed and rolled his eyes. She smiled and put her arm around his shoulders, grinning.
"What do you want, Rinko?" he asked. His sister giggled as she turned to K-chan.
"Oh, I see you've met [K-chan]!" she said. Eito turned to the blushing girl in front of him.
"[K-chan?]" he asked.
"Uh-huh!" his sister said. She paused for a moment.
"Hey, do you like her?" she whispered in his ear. Eito's face turned bright red at that question. His sister threw back her head and laughed.
"Shut up," he hissed under his breath. Rinko grinned. Alright, she had a new plan to get her brother out of his shell. Thus, Rinko playing cupid with Eito and K-chan.
The couple had been together since their junior year of high school. They lost their virginities together. That one night left her pregnant. Eito quickly tried to do right by her by proposing to her.
"Are you sure?" she asked. "We're still in high school."
"It doesn't have to be right now," Eito said. "We could get married after we finish school. I promise that I will be there." K-chan had finally said yes. Months later, their son was born. However, the couple would never get married. K-chan ended up going to America for college. They didn't think a long-distance relationship would work out. The couple mutually broke up and their son went to stay with her parents.
By the last year of college, Eito hadn't fully gotten over the break-up. It was because of K-chan he had come out of his shell and started to at talking to people. Except for Chikage and the Toramaru, Eito pretty much wanted to be left alone. Still, he felt so lonely.
Enter Inoue Narumi.
Cute and energetic. That's what everyone described the hostess as. Narumi came from a large family in Sapporo. She was the oldest, in fact. She bragged about her siblings all of the time. Always talked to her family on the weekends. Narumi was easy to get along with. Non and Sienna were close with her. Maybe it was because of her easy-going nature was what drew Eito to her in the first place.
They met at a hostess club. It was Chikage's birthday. His girlfriends were the ones to invite him out to the hostess club. The gang leader invited three of his boys to come with him. Eito wasn't good with public places still.
"Come on, man," he said. "I can't have you looking all depressed all of the time." Eito snorted.
"I am not depressed," he said under his breath. Sometimes, Chikage could be like his sister. Why couldn't they just leave him alone? Still, it wasn't like he had anything better to do.
So, here he was. The birthday boy and his party were enjoying themselves. Eito, on the other hand, looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but here. It was just like the barbeque four years ago.
"Excuse me," a small voice said next to him. Eito whipped his head around with a gasp. He could've sworn that he was staring at an angel. She tucked her long orange-red hair behind her ear. The gangster blinked at her.
"Yes?" he asked. The girl in that maid outfit sat down next to him.
"Close your eyes," she said.
"Huh? Why?" Eito asked.
"Just do it," she said. Dubiously, he closed his eyes.
"Good, now take a slow breath in," the girl said. "In." Eito slowly took in a breath.
"Slowly breathe out," she said. He slowly breathed out.
"In," she said. Eito slowly breathed in.
"Out," the hostess said. He slowly breathed out. They did this two more times.
"Better?" she asked. Eito opened his eyes and turned to her.
"Yeah," he said. The gangster turned to her.
"You a therapist or something?" he asked. The girl laughed.
"Nah, but I am studying to be one," she said. "My name is Narumi, by the way." The hostess bowed her head.
"Eito," he said. "Hey, can you stay with me for a while?" The question just slipped out without thinking. He paused, worried she would say no. Narumi broke into a little smile.
"Sure," she said. The gangster stayed by her side the whole night.
Shortly after that night, Eito and Narumi started dating. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with the couple. They looked all lovey-dovey. You never saw one without the other. They'd hold hands in public. He would kiss her on the cheek.
"You guys are so cute together," Non said.
"Yes," Narumi said. She cuddled up to his side. Eito even started thinking about marrying her one day. His sister and brother approved of the relationship.
So what went wrong?
The issues lie within Eito. He's suffered from bipolar depression and anxiety. It's suspected that he had schizophrenia. The latter had never been confirmed. At first, he kept in under control with medication. Throughout his school years, his sister took care of him. No one knows when Eito stopped taking his meds. If Narumi noticed, she never said anything.
The police made it to the apartment that Eito and Narumi lived it. When they broke down the door, they noticed that something wasn't right. There was no smell in the air. Sure it was summer, but the whole apartment felt like stepping into a freezer. Still, the police had to go inside and take a look. But first, they had to deal with the neighbors gathering around for a look. One of the policemen had to push them back.
"Move it along! Nothing to see here! Get going! Shoo! Shoo!" he yelled. He practically had to chase the people off. Meanwhile, the other two cops went into the empty, cold apartment. So far, everything looked clean. One cop went upstairs. Another one went into the kitchen. The third one looked around in the living room. They all had their guns drawn. After looking around, the cops found three messages craved into the walls.
The first one was in the living room. "I still love her."
The second was in the upstairs bedroom. "I am a failure."
The third and final one was in the kitchen. "She's here."
There wasn't much to look at in the living room. The only thing of note was the photos of Eito and Narumi all over the coffee table. They looked so happy together. It looked like an artistic display of a happy relationship of the two years.
The upstairs bedroom looked a bit messy, but nothing out of the ordinary.
"Guys!" the third cop yelled. "You're going to want to come look at this!" The other two cops ran down to the kitchen. There waited a gruesome discovery.
A giant pot sat on the stove. The cops all looked at each other. Already, they saw where this was heading. One of the cops put on a glove and opened the lid. He stepped back, gasping.
"Oh shit!" he yelled. The other two cops looked into the pot. They backed away in shock. Narumi's half-boiled head was in the pot. It didn't look like it had been cooking for long. The medical examiner would estimate that the head had been boiling for about two to three hours. On instinct, the cops looked around the kitchen. They noticed another small pot on the stove. Inside, they found her small hands and feet. The slender arms and legs were in a roasting pan in the oven. Her torso was found in black trash bags stashed in the freezer. One of the cops threw up in the hallway. It didn't take long for another one to call in backup.
They found clippings of Narumi's long black hair all over the bathroom floor. The forensics determined that Eito dismembered his girlfriend's body in the bathtub with a hacksaw and butcher knife. The remains had to be taken away piece by piece. Eito's note was a full-on confession about what he did to Narumi. He claimed that around one in the morning on August nineteenth, he and Narumi got into a drunken argument. He didn't remember the details of the fight, but he remembered wrapping his hands around her neck. Before he knew it, Narumi was dead. The rest of his actions seemed rather odd to the casual observer.
According to the notes, Eito confessed to falling asleep next to Narumi's body. He claimed that he had sex with her corpse in the morning and left for work. Eito acted like everything was normal. He cut up Narumi's body over the course of several days in their bathroom. There were rumors about him cooks up her body to eat. However, this was proven to be false by the medical examiner.
It all started to make sense now. No one had seen Narumi around after that summer night. Eito became quiet and kept his head down. He started wearing sunglasses and biting down on his thumb, mumbling to himself. Eito kept talking about little black butterflies that wouldn't stop following him around. He didn't give a straight answer when their friends asked about Narumi's whereabouts. The gangster started to leave his apartment less and less. He wouldn't even answer his phone anymore. Non thought about calling the police. But would she say to them? That Eito became a shut-in again? Maybe do a welfare check. She did make the call. The police came around to Eito and Narumi's apartment. The visit didn't take too long. The gangster kept his answers short. Everything looked fine and the police left. The strange thing? Narumi's body was lying on their futon in the upstairs bedroom. If only they had come inside…
It didn't take long for the gruesome details to hit the internet.
Non stared at her phone.
"It doesn't make any sense," she said. She looked at the last Instagram post that Narumi made. The hostess was cuddled up to Eito in the living room in the picture. Narumi had her eyes closed with a smile on her face. Eito had his arm wrapped around her with his eyes closed, smiling. "My Honey" was the caption. Looking at this post took on a darker meaning now. Rocchi gently put his hand over her phone. She looked up she a sad look in his eye.
"I know," he said. "There wasn't much we could do." It hurt to say that. Even Rocchi couldn't get in touch with Eito. He had some idea about his friend's problems. Rinko was the one who told him.
"He has his okay days and then he has his not-so-good days," she said. "Just… stay by his side, okay?" Rocchi couldn't help but ask why his friend didn't say anything. He should've taken the hint that something was wrong when Eito kept talking about seeing small black butterflies everywhere. Still, he had one question that he couldn't answer.
"Why did Eito stop taking his meds?" Rocchi asked Rinko after more details of the story were made public. She had a confused look on her face.
"What?" she asked.
"You didn't know?" Rocchi asked. The look on Rinko's face was all that he needed to know.
Yuuko sat on Narumi and Eito's apartment roof. She saw Narumi's last Instagram post too. This part was just child's play. Just some faint whispers in Eito's ear and everything fell into place from there. Overall, it turned out better than how she pictured it.
"My Honey," Yuuko read aloud. She couldn't help but laugh. Who was she going to kill next? She had her eyes on another member of the Toramaru. But then, Yuuko sighed. They were just a small snack compared to what she needed. She was going to need more blood.
Yuuko tapped the screen and closed out Instagram. She pulled up a sticky note app on her computer. The girl had one note saved in it. Yuuko opened the file.
"Dante Killer, Sento Shi, God's Hand, Orphan, Chemist, Sylar, Yami, Quantum, Hawk, Depression Witch, Kosodate, and Kuro Yurei come out and play," she said in a sing-songy voice. Yuuko chuckled to herself. The girl vanished off of the roof to her second target.
Ikebukuro
Kitano sat at his desk when he heard a knock on the door.
"Enter," he said. He looked up as the door creaked open. Daichi poked his head inside.
"Excuse me, sir," he said.
"Come in," Kitano said. The younger man walked into the office.
"I have a small request to make," he said.
"Yes?" the therapist asked. Daichi lifted his chin.
"I am afraid that Yuuko-chan is starting to get bored," he said. "When she gets bored, she will look for a way to entertain herself. I'm worried that she will kill a certain target prematurely when we don't have the conditions just right." Kitano raised his eyebrow.
"What are you suggesting?" he asked.
"Just give her something to do," Daichi said. "It will keep her from stalking the target and it will give her more blood for her horse to arrive."
"Heh," Kitano said. "Well lucky for you, I just gave Otomo-sensei the go-ahead for the blood knights to make their kills. Yuuko-chan will have all of the blood that she wants for her little horse."
"Thank you, sensei," Daichi said, bowing.
"When shall we be expecting the others to arrive?" the therapist asked.
"They will come when they want to," the younger man said.
"I see," Kitano said. "Anything else?"
"No, sensei," Daichi said. "I will see myself out." He turned to leave.
"Hajime-san, wait," Kitano spoke up. The younger man paused and turned his head.
"Hm?" he asked.
"Please be careful of those Asahara people," the therapist said. "They could be disruptive to our game."
"Do you plan to do anything about them?" Daichi asked.
"For now, we are observing them," Kitano said. "When the time comes, we will think of a way to deal with Murata-san and his cult."
"So they are a cult now?" Daichi asked.
"I find it rather fitting; don't you agree?" the older man asked.
"Pretty much," the younger man said. "Good night."
"Good night," Kitano said. Daichi walked out of the office and closed the door behind him.
