After a series become popular enough, the people behind the creation of the original cast of characters must analyses what went right with some of them, and what went wrong with others. This process is necessary to give a necessary buff in any way for those who sometimes lacked some details that could have made a difference, as while it is true that not all characters are equally important and some will clearly play a secondary role in the future, if played role, the relevance of one character will be questioned, if not denied by the complete lack of attention he ended up with, resulting in the overall cast and sometimes even story, being affected in a negative way.

This is the case of one of Danganronpa 3 The End of Hope's Peak Academy main cast character, the tall, bulky, black, high-voiced, comical, innocent unfortunate worker,

the Ultimate Farmer, Daisaku Bandai.

Alrigh, the second chapter is here with the second least liked character, and don't you know it, this guy is from the anime! What a surprise, nobody could have expected this!

(In case you didn't notice, this was sarcasm.)

Okay, to be fair, I suspected the reason why he got such a few total score of votes, is less because people genuinely disliked him, and more because they simply forgot about him. This shows as he only managed to have 9 votes in his favor (being one of the only characters to remain in the solo digit). And as for how well he did compared to his comrades, well, I didn't find a Japanese version of the rantings, but I did find a popularity poll of the most liked and disliked characters in the franchise on a Tumblr account belonging to 'Danganronpa Headcanons'. In this blog, 2,6% of the votes went to the liked section, and 1,9% went to the disliked section. Its worth is as good as any opinion since this isn't official (I think), but coming second last in the least liked and third last in the liked section does say about how he left an impression… or not.

So, how to determine if his total score was because he was unlikable, or simply unmemorable? Let's dive in!

1: Name meaning:

The kanji for Daisaku (大作) can be translated as "Big Harvest". While the kanji for Bandai (万代) can translate as "Ten Thousand Generations". Put together all of this, and it would translate as "Big Harvest for All Generations" - referencing Daisaku's Ultimate talent as a farmer, showing at least some clever design choice.

2: Physical description:

And it would seem the staff found one of their two gimmicks concerning this character, as his clothing reflect the social standing and job he does, in this case a farmer. He has a massive built, and also have the tallest heights of the entire cast, meaning 2,13 meters, for a weight of 146 kg, and 140 cm on the chest size, the second biggest number on both accounts behind Hifumi. He wears a pale brown suit, a white sweatsuit with a green circle design on his shirt, and wooden geta. He also wears a straw hat around his neck. All of those attire, as well as the color brown and green, could reflect into his field of work.

However, a second trait was given to him, and that would be, once again, be related to comedy, as he has many physical features to contrast of his physique. Notably his face, which has rosy cheeks, cartoonish eyes, and a wide grin, as well as an afro and a goatee. But his most notable traits is his high-pitched voice which sounds like a girl. This is a complete contrast with another character who will have his own chapter at a later date, not that Daisaku minds when other characters tell him that, instead taking it as a compliment.

3: Personality analysis

Much like his voice would suggest, he speaks with a feminine speech pattern. He is described to be gentle, loving and very whimsical, which completely destroys the image of intimidation his impressive physique. That being said, if we trust the information showed on the wiki, he is also very hardworking and loves nature, to the point he even cries if he sees his environment in poor condition, which fits his talent. He has a high appreciation of just how much goes into creating common day food products. Still according to the wiki, there was a scene in DR3 that was scrapped, which is a shame because it showed the man showing off his talent, this scene being used in the manga instead. He also seems to like natural ingredients, but dislikes supplements in food a lot, fitting of his talent, again.

He is fond of making up his own sayings, such as "a strawberry only gives up to 3 seeds," but no one has any idea what they mean. Daisaku himself admits that they don't mean anything, he just enjoys saying them, which also fits his comical relief purpose.

One last bit of information about his personality would be his dislike of violence and conflict, as well as some sort of naivety, which tells us all about his fate later on.

4: Origin and history

Not much, if not nothing, is known about his past, aside from the fact that he was recruited as the Ultimate Farmer in Hope's Peak Academy's 66th class, then when the Tragedy happened, as a member of the Future Foundation, as the 11th Branch's Head, which role was to help oversee and maintain agriculture in rural areas, to help aid with the food supply, fitting once again his talent.

5: Plot relevance

And unfortunately, this character will not serve much purpose. The two things people will remember him about was not only his silly remark that essentially got the initial discussion of the Future Foundation's reunion about Makoto's potential betrayal to be deviated, and on top of that, he will be the second person to die in the Final Killing Game, as well as the first victim of the concept of Forbidden Action, introducing what it truly looked like in person after Monokuma presented them. His own Forbidden Action was 'Witnessing Violence by Participants', which was unfortunately what inevitably happened when one of the participants (the one who used violence as a basic solution to everything, in fact) lashed out when tensions were high, effectively confirming that this poor character was doomed to die from the start.

6: How Good was Daisaku Bandai actually?

Well, Daisaku Bandai is… a character on the sidelines of the sidelines. Even when he was supposed to be a main character in the cast, he ended up as a third plan, if this expression exists. It's clear that the people behind DR3 only thought about a specific job to do in the Future Foundation, as well as a funny side to him, and then once it was done, they completely dropped the ball with him, in order to focus on other characters.

7: What do I think of Daisaku Bandai?

Uh… who?

Yeah, I know it was said before, but come on, the guy didn't have any sort of development. He eznded up having the short of the stick by far, as he didn't receive anything at all (except for his agriculture themed name and design, there's that, but it's really not much). No backstory, no development, no relationship with the others, NO-THING.

The only thing that has been showed in the anime that I can remember is the way he died. The way the poison affected his right side (purple skin, blood coming from his right eye), I'll admit, it's clever as it kind of reflect with Monokuma, so, small mercies there, but that's pretty much it, and it's far from enough to redeem this guy. One could even argue that since Monokuma demonstrated what the bracelet did, and given that someone important already died (someone who still manages to have more impact than Daisaku, on top of that!), that didn't help him much to begin with anyway.

8: What made people dislike Daisaku Bandai, in my opinion?

You mean aside from what hasn't been said already?

Well, there has been a lot of controversy (well, maybe not much, considering the lack of impact the guy left on people), but the fact that he is dark-skinned combined with his cartoonish traits didn't seat well with some, as those people saw him as a personification of cliches concerning black people from the 1950s. To which, I will say… I can understand his gimmicks can be annoying, but I wouldn't go that far. I don't know much about that theme, but I doubt showing teeth like those were a part of the cliches… though Japan does have a history concerning ethnics…

…yup, I think I'll stay in France, thank you.

9: How could we make Daisaku Bandai better?

Now this one isn't easy, as it is nearly impossible to improve the character without having to change him, and by extension, the anime context.

God, DR3 needs so much change anyway.

Yeah, you people have noticed I don't like DR3. Like, really not much. One of the reasons why is because they didn't use the characters at their full potential (if at all in this case).

But another thing I dislike is that, quoting the wiki, 'originally, the plan was to create something that would involve Class Trials, but because it would be "too painful for the students of Hope's Peak Academy to kill each other again", the creators decided to conclude with an anime. They believed that the story can only be told through an anime and if they made a game instead of an anime, they might not have been able to do the serious things they had planned for it. Although there won't any investigation elements, there will be suspense.'

…so in the end, we got an anime, or at least one half of it, when the previous students of Hope's Peak Academy got thrown in another killing game, only this time with no investigations or class trials, because of course the most painful part of it was only those parts, instead of, you know, THE ENTIRE FUCKING GAME!

And as for the 'not being able to do the serious things they planned' part… considering what they did (or rather, didn't do) to the character in question…

…it's official, Daisaku Bandai is a joke to them.

You understood it, I blame DR3 for messing up with its own characters.

So, the only thing I cam come up with to make him shine… is to make DR3 at a killing game. You know, like it was intended not to be.

Then what should it have been instead? Well… how about making DR3 about, you know, the apocalypse that is the Tragedy, at least at first. Show us how the Foundation works, show us how Daisaku Bandai does his job! Show us how he saves live by making him use his talent for the Future, show him that despite his bulky appearances, he refuses to fight, show us how his refusal to fight puts him on edge with some of his other comrades! Just his contrast with his physique and personality alone would be useful narratively!

And finally, make him chose a side! If not trusting Makoto, at least makes him stands his ground to refuse to kill people! We've seen other characters suggesting for killing people, but Makoto wasn't even the one concerned when he was the subject of the trial! Because let's be honest, not having a side at times of war, not just in the Tragedy, is known to be a death sentence, because you are basically defenseless against the others.

Heck, kill him off before the Final Killing Game happens if we go there! Sure, that would make him a secondary character, but at least he would have screen time by this point! Plus, his death could be used as an important plot point, as those who disagree with Makoto's points of view would use his death to his advantage! And for the forbidden Action, if there is one… well, just aim for someone else who will impact at least someone! I have someone in mind, you'll see when I get there.

Just with all of those spices, he would already have been so much better, but as he stands now… design alone simply doesn't cut it.

10: How would you rate Daisaku Bandai?

Daisaku Bandai°: 1 Star Rank (This character isn't worth anything, we need to change him no questions asked)

One Star of Six, the lowest of the lowest.

Before anyone says anything, I will say this: I don't hate the guy. In fact, I don't feel anything regarding him. You could say I don't care about him, even. To me, this is much worse than a guy I dislike or even hate, because at least I remember them! And concerning poor Daisaku's achievements, well, even the video games and the actions figurines made by the companies Bandai are more interesting to talk about.

…even this joke is better than him overall, and that makes me sad.

PERSONNAL TIER LIST UPDATE!

3 STARS RANK (Don't mind them, but improvement is welcome)

Hifumi Yamada

1 STAR RANK (This character isn't worth anything, we need to change it no question asked)

Daisaku Bandai

Well… that was quick.

No joke, I literally started today… and I finished it today. That alone speaks volume of the work I had to do.

Don't worry though, as the next character on the chopping block will have more things to say for sure!

I do hope you enjoyed this little analysis, and I hope I'll see you in the next chapter! See ya!

Pupla out, Corona begone. Stay safe, people.
