Chapter 10
Bakugou was awoken by a loud ringing next to him, followed by a panicked Misa. "Fuck...no no no!" Misa cried, pulling on her sweatpants and shirt that she had left at Bakugou's before.
"Misa? What is it?" Bakugou groaned, eyeing the time. "It's six in the morning, what's wrong?" Misa ran around the room gathering her belongings before Bakugou grabbed her tightly to stop her. "Misa. Talk to me."
"It's Rin. Something is wrong. She's been calling me all morning. I've missed her calls." Her frantic voice woke Bakugou up enough for him to start pulling on his own clothes.
"Okay, okay. I'll drive us there." He told her while Misa grabbed her purse, throwing open the bedroom door. "Misa! Wait for me!" He called out, slipping his shoes on quickly.
The pair tore down the road until Rin's house came into view. Police sirens sounded and painted the early morning sky as Bakugou barely parked the car. Smoke reached her nostrils as Misa ran through the gathering crowd, pushing past the bystanders until she reached the caution tape where an officer stopped her. "I'm sorry ma'am, you can't come in here."
"I am the Feline Hero, Shira, let me in right now." Misa seethed at the office. The carnal poison in Misa's voice was enough to shock Bakugou and scare the officer in lifting the tape for them both. "Rin! Rin? Where are you baby?" Misa called out, approaching the ambulance. Rin's mother lay on a gurney with a bloody nose and eye. "What happened?"
"Shira?" Rin's mother asked as the feline hero approached her. "He set the house on fire...they can't find her...they can't find Rin!" She cried out, looking at the flames around her house. Misa glared at the burning house before tearing off towards the flames.
"Misa! God...damnit!" Bakugou yelled, tearing after Misa, grabbing her arm. "Stop. You can't go in there." Her eyes pooled with tears as his eyes searched hers. "Please...don't."
"I have to find her...I can't abandon her." Misa cried before ripping her arm from Bakugou's vice-like grip. Misa ran into the burning house past the firemen and their orders to stay back.
"Misa!" Bakugou yelled before being restrained by more firemen. "Let me go! I have to get her!"
"Sorry sir, but we can't have both of you in there!" Bakugou fought against the men to no avail.
Misa ran through the house stretching her ears out to hear Rin. "Come on Rin, you gotta talk to me so I can find you!" Tears streamed down Misa's face as she searched each room and could not find Rin. "Rin! It's Shira! You're safe!" Panic began to set in as smoke began to soak into Misa's lungs. Her breathing became heavy before she heard tiny whimpers from the bathroom. "Rin?" Misa kicked the door down as quickly as her strength would allow, finally revealing Rin in the bathtub. "Come here baby!" Misa told her, holding her arms out for the child to jump into. Pieces of the ceiling began crumbling around the pair as the fire roared angrily. "I'll get us out of here."
Bakugou paced the driveway so fast he felt the bottom of his boots wearing thin. "Come on baby...come on." He mumbled, glaring at the doorway until he saw movement. "Paramedics!" Misa trudged out the house with Rin in her arms, coughing up a storm violently. "Come here Rin." He said, pulling the child to him to hand to the paramedics. "Look her over please." He ordered the paramedics.
"She was in the bathtub...inhaled a lot of smoke." Misa coughed, trying to catch her breath. Bakugou held her up while the paramedics took Rin.
"Stop talking. You need to come with me." Bakugou ordered her, pulling Misa away from the burning house. "That was so stupid Misa. So so so stupid." He growled, checking her body for any scrapes or bruises.
"I couldn't leave her...I'm sorry Katz." She gasped, taking the oxygen mask from Bakugou. His glare melted slightly at her quick admittance of her recklessness. "I'm sorry."
"Just...don't scare me like that again." He relented, kissing Misa's forehead softly. "Rin looks okay...alive."
"I thought I lost her. I couldn't find her. I couldn't….find her." She cried hysterically, burying her face in Bakugou's chest.
"Hey, hey...it's okay. I'm here. It's okay. She's okay baby."
"Shira! Dynamight!" Rin's voice sounded, breaking their embrace. Her face was covered in soot and mud, trailed by tears. "Thank you for saving me Shira." She cried, wrapping her arms around Misa.
"Of course Rin, I couldn't leave you." Misa soothed the child, smoothing down the wild hair escaping Rin's ponytail. Bakugou left them for a moment to speak to the investigator on scene.
"Hamada? What happened to the father?" He asked the officer detailing the scene.
"The father did this. We have him in custody now. Considering that Rin almost died in there, his sentence is going to be a pretty lengthy one."
"Good. He was an abusing asshole." Bakugou growled, looking at Rin's battered arms and her mother's swollen face. "He deserves to rot in jail."
"Shira risked her life for that little girl. I'm not sure if she's crazy or suicidal." Hamada motioned to Misa being checked over.
"I think a bit of both." Bakugou groaned, shaking the detective's hand. Rin ran back to her mother while the paramedics checked Misa over. She answered her cell phone while Bakugou rejoined her.
"Are you kidding me? I am dealing with a house fire and a potential homicide. Your fucking files can wait!" Misa screamed into her phone. "You know what Ayami? You are the worst person I have ever come in contact with and I am including villains in that. A little girl almost died and I ran into a burning building. Some would say that that is fantastic PR." She spat, crushing her phone in her hand.
"Take a breath." Bakugou started before Misa shot him a murderous glare. "Easy."
"Fucking….piece of shit." She whispered, running her hand through her hair. "I hate him...I hate him."
"I know. We'll get you out of there."
"I'm sorry Katsuki. I know our little game was meant to help me through Ayami's bullshit. But it's not fair to you. Or to me for that matter." Misa coughed, wiping her tears. Bakugou knew this wasn't going to be a permanent fix; but he'd be lying to say he wasn't disappointed that Misa got there first.
"I know. We can stop."
"I really care about you Katsuki. I don't want to ruin us on the chance that my shitty job gets worse."
"I was just trying to help you." He mumbled, itching to touch Misa.
"And you did. But now, I have to help myself. I'm leaving Ayami. I can't do this anymore." Misa decided. "And now...you can put your energy into something real." Bakugou tensed but nodded his head in disgruntled agreement.
"Guess no one wins." He joked gently, trying to cover his hurt. Misa chuckled and wiped her tears away.
"That's okay."
