No reviews this time, but please keep on giving me feedback, I need it! Anyways, on to the story:
Rowanpaw paced back and forth in the medicine cat den. It had been a few days since the end of the battle with SunClan, and most of the vicious scrapes and bruises covering her had been cleaned up. There were no casualties from LightClan, but Rabbitfur had been badly injured.
"Can I go please now?" She asked, flicking her tail impatiently. Bristlefern frowned.
"I suppose you might be well enough, but I don't want to send you out looking too imperfect," the medicine cat said, but gave in. "Fine, but no training for the next couple days."
Without giving Bristlefern a chance to take it back, Rowanpaw raced out of the medicine cat den. The medicine cat didn't know how thankful she was to not be able to do training. And Flowerpool couldn't blame it on her!
Quickly she maneauvered through the camp till she saw her mentor, then bounded up with over-eagerness. It suddenly came to her that she should probably look a bit sad about this.
"Flowerpool, Bristlefern says I'm not allowed to train for the next few days-" Rowanpaw started before Flowerpool cut her off.
"Darling, I'm sort of busy right now," her mentor said in a soft, distracted voice. "Would you not mind joining Hazelbreeze's battle training session?"
"Excuse me, but I already told you I'm not allowed to train," Rowanpaw continued impatiently.
"Darling, I am rather busy. Go join that battle-training session. Honestly, a cat needs a break from work, aren't I right?" She directed this last bit to the gang of she-cats surrounding her, and they all quickly agreed.
Rowanpaw sighed, and headed down to the Fern Clearing to practice battle training. This was one argument she knew she couldn't win.
When she arrived at the fern clearing, Hazelbreeze was talking pointedly to her apprentice, Lemonpaw, and Riverpaw practicing her strikes and slashes in the air. No one seemed to notice her. She felt badly out of place.
Finally, Hazelbreeze turned around, ready to start the mock battle, then scowled at the sight of Rowanpaw. "Why did Flowerpool send you here to interrupt?" The warrior asked meanly.
Rowanpaw was taken aback. Sure, she was used to cats treating her horribly, but their words always came with "imperfect" along in the mix. This time Hazelbreeze had sounded less scornful and with more… loathing. It was impossible to imagine why she had gotten this reaction.
"Flowerpool sent me here to join your battle training," she replied truthfully.
"Yes, Flowerpool would do that." The hazel she-cat snorted. "Fine, join us. We'll be starting in just a moment."
Warily, the russet apprentice sat down next to her sister. "Shouldn't you be resting?" Lemonpaw asked with concern. Rowanpaw looked down nervously.
"Well… Flowerpool disagreed," she confessed. Lemonpaw looked stunned.
"What would Flowerpool say? She's always been about resting to feel better…" The yellow and white she-cat never got to finish, seeing as Hazelbreeze called them up to do the first of the series of mock battles.
The training went fairly well. First she was up against Lemonpaw, who she easily beat with a jump to the side, and pinning her from behind, and the second battle went around the same way. After another complete failure from her sister, Hazelbreeze shook her head and pulled her apprentice aside, in which Rowanpaw could hear her saying "watch your back" and "more aggressive offense".
In the last battle, after the talk, Lemonpaw did much better than she had in the first place, dragging out the fight and nearly pinning her down. But Rowanpaw ended up winning by flipping her sister over so she was under her russet pelt.
Next, Rowanpaw got a break, while watching her sister and the older apprentice battle it out. Every single time Riverpaw won, quickly and efficiently. A couple times Rowanpaw even winced for Lemonpaw. Fighting was clearly not her forte.
Now came Rowanpaw's turn to fight the silver she-cat. With grim determination, they circled each other, both waiting for the other to strike.
It was Riverpaw who made the move first, with a quick succession of powerful blows that almost knocked her flat. In a split second the older apprentice was behind her, and starting to dive under, but Rowanpaw was quick enough to jump to the side, and give a few swipes to her opponent's flank.
The older apprentice reared up to retaliate, but Rowanpaw took the opportunity to ram into Riverpaw with all her might, sending her flying backwards, and quickly scrambled to pin her down triumphantly.
"Good job, Rowanpaw," Hazelbreeze said, just a blur of silver burst up from under her, and threw Rowanpaw down into a patch of earth, just inches away from a patch of ferns. Riverpaw let out a yowl of victory.
Hazelbreeze nodded approvingly. "Great comeback, Riverpaw. Rowanpaw, remember that the fight is never over."
"Uh huh," Rowanpaw replied softly, and let out a little groan of pain as she tried to sit up. She saw Riverpaw wincing.
"Did I really hurt you that bad?" The silver she-cat asked, with wide eyes.
"No, it's good," said Rowanpaw faintly.
"You should all go back to camp, and grab something to eat," the warrior told them, with a vague glint of amusement in her eyes.
Rowanpaw slowly finished standing up, then hobbled away from the Fern Clearing, slowly regaining her balance. The older apprentice bounded up ahead of her, and Lemonpaw jumped up to join the two.
Hazelbreeze shook her head. "No, Lemonpaw, we're going over extra battle moves to get you in shape. You stay here."
Lemonpaw let out a loud sigh, and Rowanpaw gave her a look of pity, before continuing on in the direction of camp. She hadn't realized how hungry she really was.
Camp was fairly empty. All the apprentices except her and Riverpaw were out training with their mentors, and numerous patrols were out feeding the Clan. Not many cats were still sitting with Flowerpool, only Amberstorm hadn't been pulled for her other duties. Both elders were lying around in their den, talking, and Bristlefern was with them, treating them for ticks. All three queens lay in a circle outside of the nursery chatting, while Echokit and Moonkit ran around, and faint squeals came from inside from the Lavenderstripe's newborn kits. Flurryfire was had fallen asleep in the Warriors Den.
"Hey!" Said a friendly voice, bounding out from the medicine cat's den. Rowanpaw looked back, and greeted her sister with a smile.
"I just got out of battle training!" Rowanpaw told her animatedly. "It was intense. Riverpaw threw me to the ground."
"What?" Gasped Glowingpaw. Then her look turned suspicious. "Wait, shouldn't you have been resting?"
"Yes," she admitted, "But Flowerpool didn't really want to listen to me. And at least Hazelbreeze was fairly good at running it. If I had to do all of that with Flowerpool, I'd pretend I was dead!"
Glowingpaw giggled. "Rowanpaw, you shouldn't say stuff like that about your mentor!"
"I know, I know." Rowanpaw rolled her eyes. "So, what do you want to do?"
"I was going to visit Lavenderstripes kits in the nursery," her sister said. "Do you want to come?"
Rowanpaw looked at her happily. "Sure!"
