Command of the chapter: sfc /scannow (copy-paste that into command prompt.) That scans all system files for corruption and deletes and reinstalls or repairs them. That is, assuming your Windows PC actually boots.
Ahri looked over her shoulder every two minutes. Criminals were being murdered one by one by a tall man in a demon fox mask. She wondered if she was next. She needed human essence in order to survive and in doing so, she killed the human she got it from. She was a pro at seduction and in-front assassination but this man was a true assassin. No one could sense him, no one could see him, no one could touch him, and no one could survive him. Only his loyal employers lived past the first meeting and those who betrayed him were found in what was dubbed The Ditch of Betrayal. Everyone who ever betrayed that man ended up there with his or her throat cut out. She shivered. 'And people call me a demon. At least my victims can see me.' How ironic that a kunai went through her left lung and heart at lightning speed just seconds after. 'I'm gonna die...I'm sorry...everyone…'
Three days later
Ahri groaned. 'Where am I?' A white, textured ceiling with walls of the same texture. She was in bed. A comfortable one too. The door opened and an elderly couple walked in with a tray of medicine. Ahri's eyes widened. 'Did they save me?!'
The old woman smiled. "You gave us quite the scare, young lady. Your left lung was punctured on both sides and your heart was torn apart."
"Thank you."
"Of course." She frowned. "Can you tell me why this would happen to you?"
Ahri thought about it. 'They saved my life, they deserve an answer.' "...It's because I'm a criminal. Ahri: The Soul Sucker. I need human essence to survive and I always end up killing someone when I collect it." She scoffed. "I didn't even hear the weapon fly."
"I see. Well, you seem like a nice woman. Go get some food from a restaurant."
"Seriously? You're just letting me go?"
The old man nodded. "Of course. If you were really that bad, you would have killed us on sighed. Now go, before we change our minds.:
Ahri nodded profusely. "Thank you so much. I won't forget this."
"Your clothes are right in front of you." After the elderly couple left the room, Ahri grabbed her clothes and went to the mirror to see what she was doing. However, she was not prepared for the ugly scar on her otherwise perfect skin. She teared up. It was a reminder of how close she came to death and the cruel reality of her existence. Because at the end of the day, all she did was seduce, eat souls, sleep, and do it all again a few days later. 'May the gods have mercy on me. Gods know that assassin won't.'
One week later, Ionia City
Naruto sipped on his whiskey and coke lazily. His last target was saved and no one knows who did it. It was a slight mark on his reputation but his list of employers hardly got smaller. Only the most petty one left him and those were the ones who would send someone after him who would then lose their assassin and have Naruto kicking down their door and cutting their throats out. He downed the rest of his drink and needed a moment to regain his senses. 'Holy fuck. That is some strong stuff.'
"Most people don't order the Fireball Whiskey and Coke on their first day unless they want to take a trip to the ER for liquor poisoning."
Naruto set the glass on the counter. "Most people watch their target's heart and left lung be ripped to shreds and then be up and running a week later."
"Fair enough. Name's Sugar and uh….I need your help."
Sugar looked like a drug dealer. Bleached hair, low quality button down shirt that wasn't buttoned with a white undershirt, gray pants that were probably lined with something for self defense. He was definitely armed too. After all, Sugar was printing harder than a Noxian 3D printer. Naruto ordered a Dry Martini. "What is it?"
"It's my son…" He hesitated. "When I was younger, I messed with the wrong Noxian street gang and now they've found me and are going after my son."
Naruto sipped on his drink. "You're a dumbass, an honorable one, but still a dumbass." He paused. "I doubt you have money so I'll make you a deal. You tell me where I can find Darius and how I can enter the Summoner's Rift without being seen, and I'll save your son and eliminate this gang at no monetary cost to you. Deal?"
Sugar pounced on that deal. "Deal! You won't regret this, I promise."
Three days later
The Mana Run Dry was the headquarters of the Noxian gang that sugar was talking about. It was a medium quality bar but behind the scenes is where things get interesting. They were still doing the usual gang activity; drug running, arms dealing, assassination, loan sharking, the works. Even better, the drugs were actually medicine that went to hospitals and clinics around the city, they had modified military-grade equipment complete with specialized uppers, lowers, and triggers. Their assassination and loan sharking was off the charts but nothing compared to the other scumbags out there and it was all aimed at said scumbags. So that begged the question; what the hell did Sugar do to attract the negative attention of people like this?
He covered all the bases, left no stone unturned, looked in every place that he could think of but found no evidence of illicit drugs or anything like that. And the more he looked, the more he wanted to investigate Sugar. 'Sugar either knows something about these people I don't, or did something horribly wrong. Either way, this is worth investigating.'
And thus began Naruto's investigation of Sugar and what he found was atrocious. He did have a son, but he treated the poor guy like shit. Naruto sat on the rooftop adjacent to Sugar's house and contemplated killing him now but stopped in the name of pragmatism. He could arrange for something with this Noxian gang, the Brotherhood, or whatever it was. Money was of little use to him. Information however, was more valuable than life itself. 'The head of Sugar the Drug Dealer in exchange for some information. Not a bad deal.' He narrowed his eyes. Sugar was about to start beating his son. 'On second thought, Sugar dies now.'
Naruto's Hiraishin kunai punctured Sugar's wrist before his fist could make contact with Sugar's face and Naruto teleported behind him with another one at his throat. "Any last words?" His words were cold, he had no intention of letting this scumbag live.
"W-wait! I can explain!"
"Very poor choice of words." He was about to slit his throat but then both of them heard death bells. Naruto felt like the Shinigami and Sugar felt like the Shinigami was here to collect and for all intents and purposes, he was. "You know what they say. For whom the bells toll…."
"How fitting..."
Ding. Dong. Ding. SQUELCH! Dong. Ding. Dong. Naruto smirked. "Fitting, indeed." He extended a hand to the boy. "You alright?"
"Yeah…" He took Naruto's hand and stood up. "I think."
"Do you have a place to crash?"
"No…"
"Go visit that Noxian Gang your father was in trouble with. Tell them..." He thought for a moment. He needed to think of something clever. "The Fox has changed his habitat."
A few hours later
Naruto stuck to the shadows of the Ionia City slums. He didn't lie. He did change his environment from the wilderness hunting rouge champions, to eliminating trash like Sugar. The number of rogue champions, as well as their danger levels, had gone down dramatically in the last few months. Something about wanting to live. Nothing like dozens of dead bodies to put the fear of God into people.
Naruto scouted the area and found what he expected. This part of town was full of trash and it looked like a breeding ground too. That Noxian gang seemed to be the only ones trying to help the situation but didn't have the resources to strike at the source of the problem or put a dent in someone's plans. Naruto placed a hand on his sword. 'That's where I come in.' Naruto's plan was pretty straightforward. Walk down the street and see who feels like getting killed. As Naruto looked around, he noticed just how much trash and broken glass was on the ground. 'That's not my job. I'll let someone else do that.'
Naruto sensed six guys trying to blindside him. He scoffed. The last person to successfully blindside him was Madara Uchiha and that man was vaporized in the 4th Shinobi War. Naruto stopped moving when he felt a single shot flintlock pistol pressed against his head.
"You're brave, I'll give you that. What's the occasion? Did somebody hurt your friend?"
"I don't have friends, we both know that. And I don't think you're one to talk, either." Naruto felt the gun press harder into his head. "We can do this the easy or the hard way. Your choice."
"Hey, I got the gun, punk. I don't care if you are the famous-AGHK!"
Naruto punched him in the throat and shot him in the face with his own gun. "Hard way it is." The other five tried to pull out their weapons but Naruto used the man's corpse as a shield and they just wasted their bullets. Naruto dropped the corpse and drew his sword and walked towards them menacingly. "Are you ready to die?" They stood there, frozen, unable to move as Naruto glared at him with his Fox mask that was covered in blood to boot. He cut their throats out without mercy or compassion. He was sending a message. The Fox is in town and boundaries mean nothing to him.
A few minutes later, he found himself surrounded by more thugs than he could count, some better armed than others but the result would be the same. He heard thunder and then the lights went off. 'Perfect.' "Nine points. Larynx. Spine. Lungs. Liver. Jugular. Subclavian Artery. Kidneys. Heart. Brain. Now, what shall be my kill point?" They were all frozen in fear. It was like Naruto could control the lighting, the weather, even their feelings. A large flash of lightning and Naruto appeared in the center of the group and when it went dark again, cut the throat of the person in front of him. He looked down at the choking and bleeding thug. 'This will take forever.' Lightning flashed again and he appeared in front of the group. 'I'll have to use the Hiraishin. If I time it right, it'll look like I'm using the lightning.' Naruto grabbed eight Hiraishin kunai; used the Kunai Shadow Clone Jutsu to spread them out evenly. He could see their confused faces when he missed them and the knives landed in the ground by their feet. "Tell me...do you think you're faster than lightning?" No one was 100% sure about what they saw but there was one consistency. Everytime lightning struck, ten people fell to the ground holding their bleeding throats.
Naruto looked at the sky. 'Three in the morning...great…' He looked at all the dead bodies. 'I've done my part. If the higher ups are smart, they'll raise my bounty.' Naruto dispelled the kunai clones, picked up the real ones, and went back into hiding.
Ionia Palace, Council Room, one week later
"SILENCE!" King Arther yelled. His advisors and high ranking nobles sat around a large banquet table and were arguing about what to do with the latest major event. The Lowland Massacre as the populous had dubbed it. Arthur glared at everyone. "If you imbeciles would shut up for one second, maybe you would be able to make a more level headed decision that lets you live another day. That being said, Magnus here, claims to understand how this assassin works. So all of you shut up and listen to him."
Magnus played with his Demon Fox vs. Scum/Criminals chess board. Black had struck a major blow against white. Magnus twirled the black queen in his right hand. "Right. I'll start with a bit of background. Our man is tall, blonde, and outrageously skilled. Psychologists suggest that he's from here and that he's a washed out special forces member that dropped off the radar after the last internal conflict. However, only the former is true. His methods are different from ours and although our interests usually align, he doesn't hesitate to remove someone high up on the food chain. That tells us he's motivated by twisted morals and money at the same time. How that's possible is something I can't answer. His latest action only cemented that theory."
He put the queen back down. "Now then, our assassin has sufficiently cleaned out the list of forein criminals so he moved on to the scrum coming from our cities, specifically this one. This means that he's either bored with the killing rouge champions...or the bingo book is now half empty. My bet is on the former. The only rouge champions left are small timers who can be killed out at our leisure. He's also here because he feels like the quality of his employers has gone down, and therefore must eliminate everyone who is likely to betray him and/or pay him little in exchange for a lot. In layman's terms; he's cleaning house. Any questions?"
One of the high ranking nobles, Madiline, had questions about his latest massacre. "Two questions. Magical autopsy reports show that over fifty thugs were killed instantly, as if by teleportation. I researched all the other champions and only three of them can teleport but not with this kind of accuracy. And the cuts were clean too. His victims weren't suffering for longer than fifteen seconds. Most bled out before then or were killed instantly. On that note, there are many assassins out there with this level of precision on individuals but it would be almost impossible to kill over fifty people at once without any explosives or gas."
Magnus played with the black bishop. "Analysts have come up with a few theories. It could be teleportation as you just stated, he could have used his clones and killed them all at once, or he used literally hundreds of small knives to kill them before they could move. See, we found evidence of large amounts of bladed objects found but only big enough for a knife to fit." He narrowed his eyes. "If this man is capable of teleportation, we have an issue. We know he can use clones, but not how many and that is an issue in and of itself." He picked up three pawns and spun them in his right hand. "Or...there's a weapon cloning spell we don't know about that he does. This assassin is the poster child for unknown variables. Does that answer your question, mam?"
Madiline nodded. "Yes, thank you. Also, what were the effects of this massacre?"
"The crime rate in every single section of the city went down by 30%. I don't know if it's because people are afraid or because there's no one left to cause problems though it's most likely a combination of the two. His next steps are removing his former employers from the equation. He can't afford any witnesses who might sell him out."
Mark, another high ranking noble, shifted in his seat a little. "Will he come after the nobility?"
Magnus shook his head. "Doubtful. Or at least...not without reason. He's only after the rats, cockroaches, and any enemies he made from his career as an assassin." He put down the pawns and sighed. "That's enough about our assassin. What's the situation with Noxus?"
Arthur frowned. "Not good. They've all but invaded us." He punched the table. "Damnit, we're running out of time! How long until you can make contact?!"
"If all of us work together, three days max." He made eye contact with everyone. "Use all your resources to find and contact this man. Spread rumors that you want to hire him if you need to.
Naruto weighed the pros and cons of meeting with Magnus. If he declined, the nation would focus on hunting him until Noxus invaded and then the nation would fall. But if met with Magnus, he would enter another war with a body count higher than the last one. The Five Great Villages had about 125,000 total soldiers put together but here, 125,000 was a border camp. He gazed at his sword through the mask. He could see it clearly, the mask was designed like that. He closed his eyes and looked at the night sky. 'It's...beautiful.' He looked back down at his freshly polished and repaired sword. It was spotless, yet it reeked of blood. "At the end of the day, a sword is a weapon, not a shield. My actions are guided by the teachings of the Will of Fire but when all is said and done, I am a murderer who leaves nothing but corpses in his wake."
Flashback
Naruto dragged himself into the hokage tower full of sadness and doubt. He remembered the Fourth Shinobi War and even though a lot of people died, it wasn't really a war. Just five nations against a group of madmen. But one month ago, a Hidden Rock STONE member was caught trying to kidnap the Fire Lord's son and was overwhelmed by samurai and ninja alike. With him in custody, the Hidden Leaf blackmailed them and demanded five million ryu or they would leak this information to the other villages. Hidden Stone called bullshit but didn't count on the Hidden Leaf following through with their threat. Hidden Cloud abandoned them because they couldn't be trusted and Hidden Mist rubbed salt on the wound by leaving a Mist headband nailed to Earth Daimyo's son's door. The Leaf and Sand remained close as ever and with the Hidden Mist and Cloud at each other's throats, the Fifth Shinobi War was predicted to kick off within two months.
Naruto clenched his fists. He had to choose between his loyalty and his morals but the choice was just as obvious as it was hard. He sighed in defeat and entered even though he didn't knock. "Tsunade-sama? I wish to join the ANBU."
End flashback
He was thinking out loud and he didn't know why but he didn't bother stopping himself. "The Five Village System dictates that your village is the correct and right village and should be the only village. The Shinobi System dictates that there is no tactic too brutal, no trick too dirty, and no cost too high if it means achieving total victory." When he joined the ANBU, the first thing they did was send him on an assassination mission to kill the Earth Daimyo and pin the blame on the Hidden Cloud. Naruto promised he would succeed and no one knew who really killed him. In a fit of rage, the still ruling Third Tsuchikage ordered the total and all out invasion of Lightning Country even though they had to cross Wind Country to do so. They crushed a poor lookout post and kept moving towards Frost and Hot Spring Country but unfortunately, they had just killed ten Sand ninja and were about to invade a Hidden Leaf Satellite territory. Thus, the Leaf waited for the invasion to be repelled and ambushed them when they entered The Land of Hot Springs. Per the Hokage's orders, they left no survivors.
With the Fifth Shinobi War underway, the Hidden Sand was free to invade the Hidden Stone while they were weak. Though still outnumbered, quality won over quantity and after Gaara killed Onoki, the remaining Stone ninja soon fell. Five days later, the Earth Country Capital undergoes occupation by Sand and Leaf forces and that matter is put on hold as they wait for a victor of the Cloud/Mist front. Two months later, Hidden Cloud is on the backfoot and a blindside invasion by the Leaf and Sand completely dominates what was left of The Cloud's forces and Lightning Country surrendered days later. Their once large country is now the size of a satellite state and everything else is too destroyed to live in. The Fifth Shinobi War lasted but six months, yet it was the bloodiest and most catastrophic one since the first one. But at the end, the remaining nations powered down their cannons and lowered their kunai but in the light and in the dark. The world had just been torn apart, now it was time to rebuild.
Strategically speaking, the Leaf and Sand won the Fifth Shinobi War. The Mist just happened to be on the same side. But in war, no one really wins. The nations took pity on the Stone and Cloud prisoners and ended their suffering and all other prisoners were released.
The world entered an era of peace and prosperity that had yet to end and the nations signed what they called The Treaty of Heaven that obligates the nations to protect the current peace and prosperity no matter the cost. The smaller nations once tried to rise up and bring back the Five Village System but the major powers stomped them out and that was the last battle the planet ever saw. The remaining hidden villages united under the hokage's rule; completely abolishing what was left of the Five Village System. With one great civilization, the world continued to grow….but the damage was done. Everything northeast of Hot Springs Country looks like the aftermath of a warzone, Water Country reeked of blood, Wind Country is too hot, and Earth Country is now a world leader when it comes to jewelry and precious metals.
The survivors had it even worse. They were all broken, tired, weary, traumatized, and paranoid. They would jump at their own shadow and look like the next Shinobi War was about to start even when they slept. Most took their own life or became alcoholics or both but no matter what, they were all considered heroes. Still, the world moved on but a monument was built with the names of all who died in the history of shinobi, no matter what side they choose. A fortress was built but no one was there to guard it. Instead, there were statues and every square inch of the place had a name on it somewhere. All of this happened in the span of thirty months.
Naruto clenched his fists. Whatever side he chose would dominate this war. The Will of Fire tells him to side with Ionia but "...when all is said and done, a sword is a tool of destruction, not salvation." He held his sword up to the moonlight and admired the beauty of a polished ANBU katana. Naruto sighed. He sensed someone...someone who wasn't fully human. "Whoever's hiding, come out now." No response. "You have one chance to come out of hiding or I'll come to you."
When the suspect came out from the darkness, he never expected to see his only failed kill. "Ahri: The Nine-tailed Fox. You're offly brave. Surely you know that this is my hunting grounds?"
"M-my apologies. D-do you want me to leave?" There was a slight stutter in her voice.
Naruto sighed. "No, it's fine." He looked out at the glowing lake in front of him. "What brings you to my neck of the woods?"
"Everyone with any semblance of authority is looking to hire you for protection against our not-so-friendly neighbors."
"So I've heard. Now tell me why someone like you would care?"
"Because the king has gone beyond looking for you. He's asking every champion on the continent to side with him and criminals that join up will be pardoned."
"A sign of desperation, but still a good move. The champions will lead the charge while the petty scum will die in battle." Ahri was started when Naruto scoffed bitterly. "I don't care about the scum but King Aurther is sending countless champions into hell on Runeterra. You don't know what hell looks like until you've seen wide-scale open combat."
"You sound like you know something about that."
"You have no idea."
Ahri sighed. 'It's so peaceful.' The beautiful moon, big lake, lush forest, and cool wildlife made the scene peaceful, it made her feel safe even though this man tried to kill her. She smiled and took a leap of faith. She hugged Naruto and used his shoulder as a pillow. "You're right, I don't." Ahri learned so much about Naruto with that hug. His old self, his old job, his old friends, no details, yet she understood what he used to do for a living and now he was given the opportunity to do it again. But at what cost? He would lose what's left of his soul. He would sacrifice his mind, body, heart, and soul so that others could live to see another day.
Ahri rubbed Naruto's back. "Nor do I want to know. But I do know that you're going to sign up anyway."
Naruto frowned. "What makes you say that?"
Ahri kissed his mask where his forehead would be. "Because that's who you are. You'll do it so countless others don't have to see what it's like to walk into hell and not come out."
Naruto wanted to deny it but it was true. He clenched his fists. As the old man once said, 'You only know what true love is when you have the courage to tear the world apart for the ones you love.' "I'll do it." He hesitated for a second. He had to make sure no one tried to join up with him. "On one condition. Tell the world that if they sign up, they'll be walking right into the bowels of hell." He relaxed and put his sword back in the sheath. 'May God have mercy on us all.'
Well? Too deep? Doesn't fit? Doesn't belong there? (That's what she said JK!) Tell me what you think.
