No Longer Alone
"Can we just agree to call this our first Christmas together," Tonks asked. "Last year kind of blew."
They sat on the ground in front of the burning fireplace, despite there being a sofa behind them. It was Christmas Eve, and the large tree stood in the corner of the room, completely decorated from top to bottom. They had put Teddy to bed hours ago, but Andromeda, who they had invited to spend the night at their flat, had up to bed only a few moments ago, leaving the two of them alone.
"It was a pretty good Christmas," Remus commented warily.
Tonks gave him an odd look, "Are we both thinking about the same Christmas? I remember having such bad pregnancy sickness that I was throwing up for most of the day. On top of that, my Mum and I were both devastated that my Dad wasn't there."
Remus could remember the stories that Dora would tell him around the Christmas when the Order was stationed in Grimmauld Place. Even though Ted had celebrated Hanukkah growing up, he was always eager for Christmas once he and Andromeda had gotten married. He knew that she had always enjoyed the holiday season, even with her family, so he always tried to make it special for her and, later, Dora. He had a spark that had been missed both this and last Christmas.
"I suppose, although...it was better than a lot of the Christmases I've celebrated," said Remus with a shrug. "After James and Lily were killed and Sirius was arrested, I spent every Christmas alone until I left to teach at Hogwarts. My last one as a student was a full moon, so needless to say, last year was one of my best Christmases."
"I'm sorry," said Tonks softly.
"Don't be," said Remus. "You had so many reasons to have a rough holiday season last year, and even this year. Your missing a large piece of your life."
"Yeah but I also gained some pieces too," said Tonks. She leaned into him, resting her head on this shoulder.
"We both have," agreed Remus as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders.
"It makes it better; this makes it better," said Tonks
"It does, and now I'll never have to spend another Christmas by myself."
"Never."
"And I have you to thanks for that."
