Iruka's POV

(The day of the exam)

Months flipped from the date, spring turning into winter and the silence in the classroom was loud. My finger's tightened around the handle of the mug, my tastebuds dancing with the taste of alcohol. How long was I preparing for this day? Days...weeks...months? The will of fire was taught and molded into us, but it changed as we grew up. I remembered the times I was like Naruto playing pranks and misbehaving if I knew what I knew now, would I have come up with a better way to cope with the loneliness? Naruto, could he be going down the same path? Pranking to get subtle reactions to cope when he was alone? He had friends now, Shinobu and Aju were close to the male; Kirayari during the ending weeks had minor moments with him. These kids were the future no matter how bright, dumb, gifted, or even tactless they were.

It was ending, placing my emotions to the side; I prayed for a day when they all came back to me and we all had a drink. Standing up, I turned to face the board my other hand lightly gripping the chalk. With every word, my vision hazed day drinking in class was my lowest. Every blessing is a curse. Only by accepting the curse in full measure can you receive the blessing in full measure. My back was turned to the class, the white substance in my hand nearing its last life. Tear's rolled down my face, it was a special moment; what made me so attached to this particular group? Could I resonate with them or was it because I watched them change in my very eyes, Aju and Kirayari bothering Hotaru, Mia, and Kiyoshi.

How Seiko and Hinata slowly and awkwardly greeted each other, perhaps I started to get caught up in my own fantasy? All the times went through my head, I was stationed with these kids since most of them were little. The tears didn't stop rolling, it wasn't like I wouldn't see them anymore; who knows if time treats me well, I'll end up teaching their children. The chalk finished in my hand, all the great memories I cherished locking into a vault. Swallowing, I parted my lips my hold on my cup growing tighter. It was the rankings of the class.

Class ranking: Knowledge/Physical/Chakra

Sasuke Uchiha: 9/10/10 Rank 01 -tie-

The brooding male wasn't a problem, he silently did his work. Sometimes, I caught him looking in Hotaru's direction whether it was a school crush or something else was entirely in the air. He was a force that pushed Naruto to try better, and although the Uchiha will say otherwise Naruto helped in his loner faze. Both held the same fate but turned out completely different. I can only guess what he'll be in the future.

Hotaru Kyokai: 10/9/10 Rank 01 -tie-

She was quiet and a delight, I remember when she asked to borrow a book of mine when she was younger; when I handed it to her she tried to mask her smile at the time but I saw it, she was a unique child someone with a great future ahead of her. She was a prodigy that was overshadowed by her peers until recently I thought she wouldn't have connected with anyone even marginally. To my surprise, she did even if she didn't realize it she was making progress in her own way. Maybe, one day I will inform her grandfather of the Uchiha that watches her on some days?

Mia Kobayashi: 9/10/10 Rank 01 -tie-

Was it truly surprising to see a girl from no clan background at the top? Perhaps her father was someone notable in that aspect which led to her adopting his skillset? She'll only keep growing with hard work, the world will turn upside down when she blossoms. She was leader material, but one of these days she'll face major conflict in which I know she'll grow from. What can I say, when these young women grow their names will spread like wildfire. I wonder if Mia will be welcoming enough for a father figure? How inconsiderate of me to think of that topic on this day.

Kiyoshi Narukami: 8.5/10/10 Rank 02

Someone who hardly spoke in class and out, from what I've been told. Despite how silent he was, I knew someone lied underneath that hard exterior. Aju began to scratch against his outer appearance, and knowing her it'll only take a short time until she free's whatever keeps him as is. He was proficient in many aspects, and perhaps I would've given him tens across the board if he participated more in class. Yet, another bright future prospect.

Kirayari Kirazomi: 8.5/9/10 Rank 03

What could I say? Does she have the will to prove everyone wrong? Nothing, I wrote or said could describe how much dedication she has to do well; overcoming obstacle over obstacle I watched her transform into something new, during the start she didn't have any friends and would constantly be called names; at times I found myself complaining to the parents of those bullies for her sake, she didn't know this...no one did. This girl was going to bring her clan out from the roots, I can only wait to see what she can become.

Masuo Kurama: 10/8/8 Rank 04

Now this child was something else, what can I say? He was something people would need to look out for, no one had a true grasp of how he really was beside his parents and me. He was a bright child that didn't want any monetary items, his little notebook he kept with him was enough for. It held information on everyone he could piece together, with his knowledge one could only pray not to fall prey to his trap. The warm cheerful child was strange in a good way.

Shikamaru Nara: 10/5/6 Rank 05

Ah, the Nara child. His intelligence surpassed my own the second he was bought into this world, the clan usually bred smart prospects. Being so smart but keeping it unknown was easy for the preteen, even at his dumbest he aced each exam. I can only imagine how far he thinks ahead and the many outcomes that roam around. His fighting style never flourished in the sparring events, but it'll be perfect for him in this exam. The stage was to his advantage.

Shino Aburame: 7/6/7 Rank 06

Describing this child was harder than Aju, he was someone that was in the background however that was his greatest strength. Overlooking him is common, he isn't reserved or shy he generally doesn't speak much unless he feels the need. I caught him socializing with insects above all, it was passed down from clans and easily he has the most going for him in this exam. This wasn't a normal exam; it was the beginning of something new.

Seiko Yuki: 8/5/6 Rank 07

Reaching the top ten in the class was worthy especially with how many bright minds were inside here. Seiko being present sometimes gave me trouble, but after speaking with his older brother I found out how warm-hearted the sickly boy was; in my free time when he didn't show I would stop by to hand him some work and attempt to help with his hobby? No, it wasn't a hobby it helped people and he enjoyed it. Not finding the words to call it, I went to the next name.

Shinobu Asobiemu: 5/7/6.5 Rank 08

The anchor keeping Naruto tied to the docks; one time I questioned if I had a friend like him would I have been better than I am now. He'd had a tough life ahead of him if he stayed close with the blonde brat, Shinobu was a bright kid that let his misdeeds take over; whenever he was around Shikamaru he would change a bit, acting a tad more serious. Friends and rivals were the best, especially when they combined having a friend as a rival.

Aju Ishigo: 2/9.5/6.8 Rank 09

Her energy changed the atmosphere, she really excelled in the arts of fighting it carried her rank quite a bit. Yet, taking her knowledge into the equation sunk the ship. Originally, she was higher but a recent test dropped her quite a bit. She wasn't that bright in the first portion and although she did try at times she never fully committed herself to study, she had strengths that lied elsewhere, and in the shinobi world where she was good, it would work in her favor.

Sakura Haruno: 7/4/7.1 Rank 10

She was going to be disconcerted regarding her rank in the class, she studied hard and excelled beyond the basics. She didn't have a clan background, so making it this far was most likely amazing to her parents. She had minor tweaks she needed to work out her knowing how loud she can be, I can already imagine the words she'd give Ino; coming in top ten was an amazing feat.

Hinata Hyuga: 7.3/4.7/6 Rank 11

She was shy that was a given, her rank didn't match up to how she really was. Her first part dropped from having to assist Kiba with his duties as a friend, at least that's how she explained it. It was her kindness that was taken granted for, her physical activities were also mismatched as she was usually put against people with greater confidence and skill. There is one instance where Jiei told me she threw the battle so she didn't have to hurt Naruto, damn brat doesn't know what he has in front of him until it's gone.

Ino Yamanaka: 6.8/4.5/5.8 Rank 12

Ino was amazing, at least from what other people said. Loud around Sakura she often teased those she was close to, and in my student's terms, she used her cuteness to her advantage teasing a large portion of the men in the class. Like Sakura, she fawns over the brooding Uchiha with pleading eyes; how the future will be is in the air.

Choji Akimichi: 5/5/7 Rank 13

Another child I couldn't help but hold in my heart, his constant eating was justified by his clan I assume; but for a couple of years many people called him a 'fatass' just like they called Kariyari 'Carrot girl'. When someone called him out, the fuse he kept in water lit and all hell could break loose. I knew from traditions if he passed the exam what kind of cell he'd be put in. The combo was well known throughout the village, who would want to break traditions?

Kiba Inuzuka: 2/9/5 Rank 14

Now this baffled me, Kiba wasn't bright in the slightest; but he could comprehend certain things. The dog-smelling boy had a huge crush on Mia, I often found myself giving him advice at least telling him to shower if he wanted to be closer. Nothing changed, even after my advice and warning, he didn't listen to me. Maybe growing he'd understand the importance of hygiene? Anyone knew if you wanted to woe a girl you needed to be your best self.

Fukō Adohira: 5/5/5 Rank 15

Another shock, top fifteen. He was hardly in the academy, and when he was here he did the bare minimum. The exam would be the fall of this boy if he didn't train hard this past couple of months. Ever since the big meeting five months ago, he wasn't seen or heard of along with his brother. I was informed that he was going to be personally trained, but still not even checking in at all? Didn't he have friends? Getting the same number in all subjects had to involve skill, there wasn't any other way.

Naruto Uzumaki: 1.9/9/2.3 Rank 25

My eye's skipped past the rest of the names, they weren't of importance at the moment. Naruto Uzumaki. I loathed this child not long ago, he was a pain in the ass for the simple reminder he was the cause of everything. I didn't care how he was treated at first, he could've been killed and I would've gone on with my life. I can't say the same now, the more I looked at him I saw the similarities we shared. I didn't want what was in him to keep him from living a life, the villagers may hate the young man but I adored him. I hope when everyone else finds out they keep the same outlook on the child, after all, friends were the most important piece in life.

I composed myself, my face free of tears. Moving out of the way I turned and gave my final grin, I was supposed to be telling them the rules regarding the exam this was important though, I could skim through those jurisdictions in seconds. We were ahead of schedule anyway, people were getting the location ready. People would spectate the exam, not civilians but fellow shinobi and some Genin. Picking up the extra set of chalk I had laying around, I once again turned to face the board.

Top Shinobi

Sasuke Uchiha

Top Kunoichi

Mia Kobayashi

Moving out of the way once again, I took in everyone's expressions. Konoha encouraged teamwork, not resentment and distrust. The exam will test everyone, showing if they truly picked up what was taught. "It's the end, I'm letting you guys talk!" Raising my hand, the noise that emitted from the large mass was enough for me to regret my choice for a second. It was only for a split second, I wouldn't take back my word ever.

Everyone was right I was faint-hearted and it wouldn't change, was that the reason I couldn't progress beyond my point? My growth was done, this was my end. Looking at my students I noticed the unfamiliar presence that circled around, they weren't wearing any ordinary outfits. It was proper shinobi attire, even if it was my end I wouldn't let this affect the growth of others.

xXx

Doe-shaped eyes halted on the board, ivory skin tone glistened in the light her full lips thinning as she planted her closed-toe boots firmly on the floor some pointy white-colored greaves covering her shin's; the black trousers she wore neatly tucked into her boots. Running her fingertips along with her fingerless netted gloves that peaked at the center/middle of her upper arms, they complimented the fishnet shirt she wore under the white flared dress that was cut from her navel downwards to the end letting it flare outwards. Readjusting the teal headband around her waist she narrowed her eyes before moving the colored satin bow that kept her hair in a ponytail. She ranked top Kunoichi despite coming in a tie with two of her peers, she didn't show any outward reaction besides a smile. Her hard work was showing in the best way possible.

"Congrats on your ranking Mia!" Sakura couldn't contain her happiness for the friend, jealousy was something she felt often nowadays and this time it wasn't dying down. The pink-haired girl turned to look at Hotaru, lately, she hasn't been able to flip the switch from jealousy and anger, so she masked it with happiness. "Hotaru, I also want to congratulate you for having a three-way tie for first." Of course, she caught Sasuke looking at Hotaru from time to time it annoyed her.

Hotaru's large cat-like golden eyes read her name and the spot she came in, a slight nod sufficed for acknowledgment of the girl. It seemed she did what her grandfather wanted, ranking top in the class. Hearing most of the girls talk about how Mia got top kunoichi despite tying in the ranking bought a great sense of annoyance to the female, they were trying to cause unwanted problems. Her outfit consisted of: a plain black bodysuit the shorts stopping around her upper-mid thigh region, to add on she also wore a black glove around her right hand the color matching with her stockings that ended at her thighs, the top of her bodysuit was sleeveless the material custom made for her as a present from her grandfather. It wasn't tight as it was very breathable and was light as feathers making it easy for her to move in the fabric, it was specially made to resist wind resistance and allow less noise to come from her. Above the layer was a white cropped hoodie with a singular long sleeve running down her left arm she kept her left hand concealed, the white belt around her waist holding many of the daily use items she'd need to use such as the basic weapon's pouch and her barrage of seals. Plain ninja sandals hit the floor, as Kiyoshi was given his round of applauds.

The silent male kept his outfit simple, a loose blue sleeveless top that matched his adored karate pants. A dark obi is tied around his waist to contrast with the heavily bandaged arms he kept covered that reached his elbows, the white color around his arms was just about one of the brightest things he wore; his blue sandals matching the overall outfit. Jet black hair tied in a ponytail to prevent unnecessary distractions. The slim male didn't reply to any of the words thrown at him, his eyes set on the names above his own. "Interesting." Black hues trailed to the name directly underneath his own, it was close which meant she should be able to provide results in his ability.

Kirayari wasn't expecting any words to be gifted towards her, being acknowledged was something that was odd to her in this class; the only people that would've given her credit weren't present in class. Leaning back in her chair she let everyone's words cast around her for a first she was quiet, she just couldn't find the words to say. Yesterday, her mother forced her to go shopping for a proper outfit; perhaps the amount that was spent was weighing her mentally. The lime green yukata she wore hung around her frame, she wore the left sleeve while the opposite hung over the brown belt she had which held her utility pouches. Underneath the yukata was a plain red t-shirt and black trousers that reached past her kneecaps, the loose bottom half was comfortable to move around in. Like Kiyoshi, she had her forearms wrapped in white bandages, only she didn't stop at that. She rocked the bandages around her lower legs, hands, and feet. What may be difficult for others was normal to her, which is why she wasn't wearing any shoes. The bandages on the bottom of her feet were a tad dirty from walking around.

Hinata took a brief look at the wooden su yari near Kiaryari, she didn't know how the exam would be nor what it entailed, but she wanted to do her best. "G-good j-job Kirayari." Her low pitch wasn't heard, it didn't make her anxious she simply didn't like raising her voice.

Seiko couldn't help but fiddle with his surgical mask he liked the Ninja outfit he got, the purple jacket went well with his eye's even the bulky white fur that outlined the collar and the ends of the hand section. The purple boots with a nice number of straps keeping them on, the comfy thigh-length white socks and yellow shorts were a nice touch. As he laid one of his arm's on the table in front of him, his fingertips began to tap on it rhythmically. He came in seventh place, it wasn't bad but it wasn't the best. Happy for his peers, the young male waited in silence.

Despite all the noise going on, Naruto found himself looking at his rank. Dead last was what everyone predicted for him so it was only obvious he was there, these numbers weren't important when one became a genin so why was he so frustrated? Sucking in his bottom lips, he controlled his breathing.

Emerald stared into the board behind the teacher, the expression on his face screaming boredom. Shinobu enjoyed the new clothing pieces it was sort of a present from his parents for becoming a Ninja. Although it wasn't bright and flashy he was thankful nonetheless, as his emerald orbs eyed the extra-large marron hoodie that glided past his hands and waist stopping around the middle of his thigh; sure it covered up his black pants in a way kicking his legs up for a moment the white bandages that wrapped around the lower half of his shins only loosened, clicking the heel of his dark sandals together the male felt the dark belt he wore tighten as he shifted in his seat. The three pouches are soon to be full of things resting on and around the belt while the last pouch holding up on his right leg, this one specifically for kunai. Turning his attention to his blonde buddy, he didn't understand why he had such a sad look on his features. "Hey, we had so much fun these last couple of months huh?" He didn't want to see him down, not on a day like this. "C'mon even if you are in last place, it'll be so cool if you pass this exam with flying colors to make up for it right?" Naruto didn't utter a word, his large blue eyes watering for a moment. He didn't understand why he was like this...it didn't help Mia was glaring in their direction, her eyes alone judging the blonde.

Masuo stood outside the classroom, he didn't need to see the rankings to understand what place he was in. Everyone's reactions weren't enough to waver the thoughts that plagued his mind, his parents kept him on his toes these passing months. They told him stories about this Forest of Death, how many people lost their lives inside the giant place; how the trees and roots were bigger than buildings they weren't saying that to scare him it was to give him the upper hand, he had knowledge on a location that very few knew about. All he needed to know was the exam's qualifications, of course surviving would be easy but there was going to be a catch...would someone be chasing them? Fiddling with the white gloves on his hand, he kicked his foot deeper into the red shoes. Matching his shoes was the crimson coat and dark red pants, under the coat was a plain white dress shirt. The bright color's really allowed him to stand out, it's been psychologically proven to make it easier to approach people and lessen depression.

Sasuke's POV

Everyone was dressed differently, and if I cared I would've noticed the nervous looks that spread around the room. I placed top in the rankings and was the top male shinobi in the classroom, it irked me that Mia and Hotaru were able to tie with me overall; I figured Hotaru would come close and Mia would come high but this was closer than I wanted. In the end, ranks were a mere thing to differentiate skill. Iruka wasn't moving, it seems he was waiting for us to settle down before explaining the rules. If it was about survival partnering up with someone wasn't a bad choice. I had two options convincing Mia was easier said than done, but Hotaru was the problem.

I remember her from my childhood, it was only moments but I would often catch her around with someone that could've been her older brother. She and I never had any sort of conversation, it was only silence when we were around each other it was something I subconsciously wanted to change. She had the skills to keep up, which made her worthy to a degree. There was more to why I wanted to be around her, she was a key...at least in my head. After my clan was massacred, I didn't see her nor the older person anymore, or was it before I couldn't figure out if I was making my own memories at this point to solidify my ambition. Hotaru was a piece of everything whether she knew it or not, why that bastard did what he did. I was reaching, I knew this.

Iruka cleared his voice stifling all noise in the room, "Now, although we are missing some students I am sure you'll hear these rules once again." The exam was supposed to be easy to pass at first so this change could mess up everything. "To start, you will be forced to fight let it be each other or what you'll be chasing." Iruka crossed his arms the look in his eye sharp, "Each of you will be given a name and a flag, your goal is to survive and come out with six points." Missing a step, the older man shook his head backtracking. "Your flag is worth three points and the one you'll be assigned to get is also worth three points, others are one point. Random flags will be around the area, so keep your eyes out...surviving and acquiring six points is the main task, the grounds will be split off into four sections for unexpected circumstances. Use of weapons and ninjutsu are allowed, working together is also allowed; I wish for the best regarding your exam."

That changed everything, Iruka didn't clear up who's flag will give us the extra points but I had a base idea. Working together was futile in this exam, anyone and everyone was against you; so how would they operate the teams? There had a be a catch, flags would be scattered across the grounds but you need six points to pass. It wasn't a number on how many flags were scattered, so was they betting people would work together to find most of the flags? Three days was long enough to find five individual flags, but taking the one you need and keeping your own equals a passing result. What was the catch?

Ramen filled my nostrils, iris moving to look at the blonde brat a few centimeters in front of me. I was zoned out, what could I have missed making this brat come in front of me? The reasons were minuscule, hearing Sakura's voice already told me everything. Narrowing my gaze, I felt the intensity in his eyes. I didn't know what happened next, did he lose his footing? Pushing the dobe off, I bought my hands up to touch my lips. Out of everything that could've happened...we happen to kiss.

Sakura screamed as if she witnessed someone killed her family, everyone was looking at us. I'll kill this blonde, looking towards the instructor I was baffled to see him hiding his smile.

"BAHAHA! Naruto and Sasuke kissed!" Shinobu leaked the information, I mentally made a list of the people I could get away with killing in the exam. Without paying much attention, I failed to notice Mia standing in front of Hotaru.

"Someone informed me that rivalry is healthy in growing, I find yourself being the most compatible in skill so from this moment you are my rival. I don't expect anything less than what you've been showing throughout the academy." Hotaru met Mia with an irritated gaze, it was another instance where she had no choice in the matter. "You tied with me in the ranking, from this moment I will see myself trying to stay ahead of you." Her words didn't have any effect on Hotaru.

"If that helps you then I don't mind." Competition could be one or two things, which way would it go for the two.

No one's pov

Masuo found himself on the roof, the classroom wasn't a place he wanted to be; he heard the rules and knew what to expect. "Look who's back from the dead."

The wind washed over the figure sitting on the rail, his legs dangling. Another breeze hit the two, the creases in his cloak coming undone. The black cloak warmed the preteen, the dark color matching his dark shorts that stopped around the start/middle of the knee. The child only had two pouches around that clamped on the waist, basic sandals harbored his feet; white bandages wrapped around his legs and feet, and underneath more bandages were around his torso and arms. Still rocking the messy bun, lips parted a brief moment of bliss washing over him. Beady eye's turned to the bright weirdo. "Five months is a long time? Next time it may be a couple of years."

Masuo didn't put it past the male to leave for a couple of years and randomly return fit him, taking in his new appearance he didn't like the dark color scheme. "I like the cloak, it looks like it goes down to your thighs..." Lifting the back of it up he noticed the white bandages, "No shirt underneath though? Bandages are different...but it fits you." Noticing the bow and arrow's off to the side, he was about to question it until he saw a weird outline underneath the bandages. "Looks like you came back with an arsenal of weapons." It was a thin blade anyone could make out the shape. "So, why these weapons?"

"A bow and arrow can only do so much but with this cloak, it can conceal my other weapon...the bandages are for hiding it and keeping it on me...and another reason I can't tell you." Fukō left the railing moving he picked up his bow and threw it around his chest the quiver clicked onto the wood on the bow, "Want to make a pact."

Masuo knew this meeting wasn't a coincidence, the fact he told him about his hidden weapon so freely. Being back was unknown, eyeing him up and down the violet-haired preteen smirked. "Depends on why and what the pact is about."

"You'll have the advantage in most aspects if we don't get each other how about we work together? Think about it, if we double-team whoever we need it'll be an easy victory." Fukō's words were tempting, it would make the exam easier and increase their survival rate.

"Many people would agree to this, but you elected me. Where have you been these past couple of months?" He was dodging the questions, the two wouldn't come to an agreement until one answered the other.

"I'll let you think on it, it doesn't matter if you tell anyone I'm back...I wasn't really known that well to anyone in the class." Fukō walked right past the male, before exiting the roof.

"Why would he come to me? Telling people won't help in the slightest, no one was close to you anyways it'll only cause annoyance." Masuo snapped his fingers, it was a good proposal and he had no reason to disagree, but waiting it out was the best option. Honestly, his goal was to try to partner up with whoever his target was. The young boy took his book out of a pouch, "The shock of him coming back out of the blue will catch some people off-guard, it'll make it easier for him." Mind games were tricky, one wrong move and everything could fall apart.

xXx

Time went by and the students found themselves stationed behind the gate that separated them from the training grounds, many of the proctors/viewers sat in a room with many crystal balls set up to view a certain student.

Mizuki laid out different colored flags around a table, with the flags came a piece of paper. It didn't take long for everyone to pick a color flag, being told to input chakra into the paper many did so only for the color of the paper to change. "As you see, the color changed none of you have the same color; that's the flag you are supposed to get, I suggest you take a look around to see who has what color."

As if on instinct everyone started hiding their small flag, it was a basic reaction.

Naruto held his orange flag in the air, waving it around he grinned. "Whoever needs my flag! Just make sure you put up a worthy fight!" He wasn't dumb enough to reveal what color he needed.

The flaps of the black flag moved with the wind, no one seemed to notice his presence until he made it known. Random eyes set on the dark-colored flag, some confused while others knew the exact plan.

Shikamaru merely glanced at both of the flags in the air, 'Naruto is dumb enough to do that, but Fukō is baiting the one who needs it to chase him.' This exam was going to take way more than skill, it heavily relied on luck.

"I assume everyone knows the rules? Yes? Alright, I will give everyone a piece of advice; don't let your guard down for a moment. You'll be going inside the Forest in intervals, thirty minutes after each other the order is whatever rank you got in the academy. " Mizuki opened the gate, an eerie aura oozing out. "Good luck."

Aju watched as Mizuki signaled for her to go, heels that previously dug into the dirt released. Dust kicking up from where she previously stood, the bandages she had around her feet dirtied from her progressive movements. Entering the large thick domain, the sun was immediately blocked out. She didn't want to stand still until she made noticeable progress, many people entered before her which gave them ample time to set traps. She had the lime flag and was suppose to get the blue one, luckily for her, she knew exactly who had it. Jumping off one of the large roots, the female placed chakra in her feet sticking to the tree she ran up only to rest on a branch.

The oversized squash orange pullover hoodie she wore covered her legs as she crouched, the hoodie keeping her face unknown. Under the large piece of clothing was a heavy weighted vest, it was vital in certain instances. To make her kit even more of a problem she had on a mesh armor t-shirt underneath the vest, controlling her own temperature would prove to be a huge turning point in many altercations; if she were to overheat it would cause a mountain of problems. Standing she balanced herself with a palm on the bark, the oversized hoodie went past her hands and imperceptibly covered the dark brown boy shorts that were tied around her by a rope. Exhaling, she scouted around she didn't keep track of how much time had been since she'd been released; water was an important source to start. Using her head for once, she figured that's where everyone would be heading.

Hairstyle in its usual bushy long pigtails, the minor difference was the thin line of rope that was used to keep her hair in that format. "Water and figure out who is after me, sleeping would be helpful considering the goal is to survive but anyone could catch me off guard then." Making her way down, Aju landed flat on her feet the folds in the hoodie shaking. The sun peaked through the leaves above and illuminated the clan symbol on her back, she'd make more ground before pinpointing everything. Leaving the spot, she headed deeper into the pit. The scenery was exactly how her father described it.

-Two day's ago-

"So, the plan is to locate a body of drinkable water that is the utmost priority. You will have a canteen on you, but finding a source of water will be a game-changer." Hiroto closed the book about surviving in the wild, "Food isn't as important especially since you started practicing with your mother how to delay your hunger." Placing the informative book on the counter he embraced his daughter. "Scratch that, make sure you are safe at all times." The last thing he wanted was for his daughter to be in the medical unit with serious conditions.

"I'll be fine! I've been training nonstop for the last five months, I don't want all this time to go to waste." Without outward admitting it, she was willing to risk it all. This was a chance she couldn't pass up, returning the warmth she knew that one misstep during the exam would hinder her greatly. Her hold around her father tightened, she knew even if she was ready to risk it all death was to be feared.

Hiroto let his daughter go, he should've put up more of a fight when this exam was announced. He had a duty as a father to protect her until the time was right, but the clan wasn't deep enough to put up a good argument against the like of the Hyuga. The differences of power came into play when things like this were bought up, he had faith in his love's skill and talent. "I did some scouting and saw that it's a huge forest with bigger than average creatures, you can use the terrain to your advantage; with that in my keep away from that Nara kid, getting into a fight with him will put you in the worse position."

-Present-

Moving at above-average speed, the female caught a hint of luck. Heels digging into the earth, she stopped herself and quickly scrambled back. In a flower bush was a flag with the number one on it, picking it up she placed it in her pocket with her flag. 'That's four points, two more and all I need to do is evade.' Lost in thought she was almost caught off guard, turning to the figure walking out of the bushes she sighed. "Who are you?"

"Y-you idiot! You don't remember me!" Izumi let out a low growl before composing herself, "It doesn't matter, your flag is mine." Taking out a kunai, the girl lunged at Aju only to get kicked in the jaw midair. Her body went limp as she fell back, foam leaving her mouth.

"Izumi, nice challenge but coming after me was stupid of you." Aju gave a toothy grin before bending down to snatch her flag, "That makes five points...tata." Waving she disappeared leaving the poor girl in such a state.

"All the students have officially been inside the forest of death for fifteen minutes or more, so far as everyone predicted they began scouting." Hiruzen looked around the room, everyone was interested in what was going on. All it took was one moment for someone to go down, even if they were on the lookout, people had bets going around. Apparently, all bets were on either Sasuke, Mia, or Hotaru. There were a few that were placed on Kiyoshi, Shikamaru, Kirayari, and Aju. The Hokage exhaled looking at the paper of bets going around, placing a bet on Shinobu he passed the paper down. In the end, nothing changed two more people got into to gamble placing Masuo and Fukō on the board.

Sasuke flipped backward dodging another set of Kunai, it's been like this constantly. Whoever has been tracking him was at it for a while, they were good at it which narrowed the list down. The sun was setting, it would put him at a disadvantage. He could see and dodge the weaponry now, but not for long. Jumping back two more kunai flew in the air missing him. "How about you come out and face me head-on?"

"I will!" Jumping down onto the branch Sasuke was in, Kiba glared at his peer the dog coming off his shoulder to bark.

"Should've known the mutt would be after me, the tracking was a dead giveaway." Sasuke sneered, this was a match-up he didn't need. "I take it you don't have the violet flag." Digging into his pocket the male took out his red flag, Kiba didn't say a word.

Silence washed over the two, the Inuzuka rushed at the emo his partner following from the side. Sasuke held his ground watching him close the distance, at a certain point he toss the flag into the air and met the male head-on. When they were about to collide, the boy poofed into Akamaru and Akamaru turned back into Kiba; the subtle trick was fatal, the Uchiha catching a fist to the face.

Wobbling, the dog joined in on the fun and jumped into his gut. Leaping off one foot, Kiba kneed the preteen in the face. Watching Sasuke fall off the branch, Kiba scooped up Akamaru and caught the flag. "Looks like he was all talk boy." Grinning, he looked at the flag only to watch it turn into a kunai with an explosive tag. The branch exploded dust, smoke, and debris coming down. Sasuke dusted off his shoulder, 'If he was smart, I would've been in trouble.'

What seemed like debris fell from above, but as the smoke cleared Kiba stood. "Nice try, but if I didn't hide under the branch I would've been dead...so would Akamaru." Placing the puppy down, Kiba nudged his friend into a bush. "I was going to let it go, but Akamau...is hurt." The side of Kiba's outfit was burnt off, his skin exposed showing the signs of a serious degree of burns. His hands clapped together, Sasuke took out a Kunai readying himself.

Tiger: Gijyuu Ninpou: Shikyaku no Jutsu (Ninja Art of Beast Mimicry: All-Fours Jutsu)

Chakra emanated from the male, his body bending; the injury on his side didn't affect him. His nails grew and sharpened, breathing rigid he let out a low growl. Canines sharpened, steam left his body, his pupils dilated. Sasuke stepped back the kunai being slapped out of his hand as Kiba elbowed him in the chest, disappearing he came from the side his nails entering the Uchiha's calf; stifling the pain Sasuke removed himself from the mutt only to get clawed in the chest. Rolling around Kiba felt his muscles tense, the smell of Sasuke's blood embedded into his nails.

Standing Sasuke narrowed his gaze onto the male, he was faster than expected. 'I'll need to use what I've been working on if I want to keep up.' Jumping back, the red liquid left the male's chest. Kiba charged once again, chakra reached its point and both of the preteens were off.

Sasuke ducked under the claw, pushing himself back he turned punishing Kiba with a kick to the chest. Both of them jumped back, Kiba was steadily losing energy using this style his chakra was nearing its end. Sasuke didn't expect to be the loser in this fight, even enhancing his speed it was hard to dodge and counter the Inuzuka. Kiba's calf's flexed leaving his previous location.

Sasuke cursed sweat rolling down his head, jumping in the air he looked around only to get hit from behind. Falling onto the floor, he quickly picked himself up. Without any time to flatter he tried to close this fight out,

Horse, Serpent, Ram, Monkey, Boar, Horse, Tiger: Fire release: Goukakyuu (Fireball)

Inhaling air, he exhaled fire coming out to greet the area; the trees, bushes, and grass caught on fire. The jutsu forced Kiba to grab his partner and leave the male alone, for the time being, chakra zapped, the dog-smelling child quickly left.

Sasuke let out a groan before following in his ex-classmates footsteps, both were injured anymore and they'd both die.

Masuo walked with Sakura both making meaningless talk, "It's nice of you to tag along, I thought I would be doing this whole scary exam alone...everyone is trying their hardest to win...but here we are teaming up!" Her chippy voice shot out one ear and into the other. "When you approached me, I thought you were going to do what you usually do; but your explanation on why we team up was good...and I didn't want to be alone." It was Sakura's goal to make Sasuke jealous at first when accepting this request, but he didn't see which resulted in her just going with teaming. "I'm really glad you don't have gold and don't need yellow."

"I'm glad we could find a connection to team up. At first, I was under the assumption you'd decline but here we are." Masuo gave the young girl a small smile as they kept moving. "Yea, I have violet and need blue." Closing his eyes, he checked his surroundings once more with a small burst of chakra. They were in the open casually chatting, they took off west once Sakura was released and no one happened to come this way.

"It's going to be night soon...how about I get a fire set up and you find us some food?" Her voice was enough to make the male mentally sigh, the plan was stupid. The fire would bring smoke...and the smoke would make people curious the smell of food will draw them in and whatever animals lurked. Abruptly coming to a stop, he caught the faint off-color flag with the number one on it. Picking it up, he quickly offered it to the girl.

"I-I you don't need to do that...really." Waving her hands, the friendly girl shook her head only for the flag to be placed in her hand. Her eye's widened as she subconsciously wrapped around the small material catching Masuo's hand in a short grip before releasing it.

'She is borderline obsessed with Sasuke cause he is someone she admires, I don't need to make her fall for me; just need her to trust me until I take what I really need.' Masuo stepped back, "Let's make camp near here! I will go find some food!" Quickly leaving the girl alone he disappeared into the forest, releasing the minor camouflage he had on his flag the male smirked. The color he needed would be less than five feet away at all times, and the color she needed was right next to her. It was rather unfortunate for her, but he needed to keep progressing. Managing the small deception was draining, it was a simple jutsu he learned from his father. All someone needed to do was cast chakra into an object and change it, theoretically speaking everyone should know how to do it.

Crouching he grabbed a stick and began mapping their whereabouts, 'When the three days are up, I will need to know where the exit is...it won't be the way we came in...' Pondering he kicked the dirt and started looking for food.

After the brutal fight between Sasuke and Kiba, the Sandamine Hokage found himself disappointed. The kids were willing to kill each other to pass the exam. Needless to say, everyone was shocked to see such use of high ranking jutsu utilized by the Uchiha. The fire was used to separate the two and let both escape, fighting would ensure during this exam it was merely the first day...and no one was making progress.

Kakashi noticed the Hokage's expression but kept to the Uchiha that was currently resting after the battle, everything was vague on their in they knew what the children knew if not less. Konoha was a place where people put peace in front of violence, so why were they putting the children against each other? It seemed he wasn't the only one to think this.

"This makes no sense," Reina spit her thoughts out only a few catching what she said, "Why would we advocate love and peace and throw these kids at each other?" Reina's eyes fixated on three of the children, so far no one caught her attention, but her interest was peaked with Aju it was slightly easy to change with any new development. "In the book, it states that the whole village is supposed to be a big family." Her voice got increasingly louder, eyes coming onto her from all directions.

"It doesn't make sense if we wanted the children to prove themselves we could've waited for the Chunin exams, even then we could've pushed them hard when the teams were formed." Asuma entered his input into the situation before turning to his father, he knew that the relationship they had wasn't the best but his father always looked for the best of the future generation and the people...so what was going on?

Akane watched the orb as if it put her in a trance, the fight that happened was exciting. Zoning back to the group of people she was with, she found herself putting together a statement. "Well, peace and love is the focal part of Konoha but you still have to teach us about violence against each other. You never know when someone will turn against the village." Her words put the room in silence, no one should think like that.

"You need to live to forget and make peace with enemies..." Hiruzen was blind by the Will of Fire, he was a prime example of letting kindness blind him. Letting Danzō roam around the village freely and Orochimaru live up to be how they are now, he turned a blind eye to dangers around him but when it affected the village he had to make some changes.

"Peace can only take you so far, take this kid for a second." Akane pointed towards the student pinning another down on the ground, "No peace could be made in this situation, each wants to graduate." The younger Yūhi knew it was only for this subject, but peace was a thing in the village it shouldn't come up constantly.

Hiruzen Sarutobi tipped his hat the shadow covering his eyes, "You are young and haven't experienced life, but if everyone else feels the same way I advise you to rethink the goal of Konohagakure."

Jiei didn't know the Hokage well, but when he first came he had someone read him history books from top to bottom. Hiruzen Sarutobi was indeed no ordinary Hokage, sure he was a pacifist in some sections but becoming someone that can lead the village took feats; there was more to this exam. What was the twist? It was one of those moments the warrior cursed his lack of vision. Mitsukaze watched what he placed all cards on only for them to scale yet another tree, if anyone was going to figure out what was going on it would be her...he didn't want this to be known but he wanted Hotaru placed with people that would help her grow as a person, one of his choices was the Nara kid and another was either Kirayari or Aju. He didn't want her to be placed on a team with the Uchiha nor anyone that would stunt her growth.

Kei listened to each conversation, the more everyone spoke it sounded like it was a test for both sides. Who would figure it out first, the children who were putting their lives on the line or the spectators? Either way, these lengths were beyond ordinary...perhaps the Hokage felt his time was ending and was looking for someone worthy of replacing him?

"I gave all of you the answer to all your questions, some of you even told the students the answer...misdirection is a fascinating tool many ninjas don't utilize." All eyes directed at the old man, a smile coming onto his face.

One of the crystal balls glowed as Mia and Hotaru came face to face...teal and gold stared at each other.

'Let the games begin.'

The exams begin, and everything is not what they seem. Who really knows what is going on, and what will happen. More subtle moments between people, rivalries being made, and some blossoming. I think colors could say a lot about a person especially with what they don't like and like. Iruka is probably the most emotional shinobi in the village simply because he's been with most of these kids since they were little, helping them grow and mature. Behind the scenes, he's easily one of the most kindhearted, and thoughtful.

That day drinking is a huge aspect of emotion.

For the team aspect, I should say it may or may not surprise you. Still love seeing the guesses!

Thank you for the support! The forest of death is something I feel wasn't used much in canon Naruto and had lots of potential, some interactions are lesser but have a huge impact in terms. It all depends on which perspective you look at it in, Sasuke showed a reason he keeps tabs on Hotaru maybe it's something more who can truly know. The exam may give a hint or two at who will be on teams if you pay attention to the colors of the flags among other things!

Masuo is indeed similar to Kabuto in some aspects, easily someone I enjoy to write it's something about having him pick through a character that makes things interesting. Kei is sweet, generally the complete opposite of his brother! I think Kei knows when to differentiate work and regular life, that aside his brother is always first in his mind! Life out of the academy is nice cause you get to see parts of the OC's life that you don't normally seem home aspects can say a lot about a person. Indeed, Kakashi at first didn't care for Naruto nor Sakura taking that I think towards the start he wanted only the best with the most room for growth, as for everyone else they have reasons for wanting who they need. Teams may seem tricky but as the exam goes on I think they may become clear or leave people shocked. Thanks for the support! It really means a lot.

Reina and Kei being rivals would make for some funny moments, but being caught up with Danzo is bad for anyone especially as seen in canon what happened to everyone that had ties with the old man. Imaging Mia in a green jumpsuit is funny, just thinking about her and Lee going about being youthful would be a sight lol. Who knows maybe the canon ones will stay canon or I will fuse everyone together, lets get a Kiba, Mia, and Naruto on a cell with Asuma as the Jonin! Akane is fun to write with being Kurenai's sister she'll start becoming more involved after the exam! Thank you!

All the OC's are indeed interesting lots of things to work with!

I think this is one of my longer chapters, I don't tend to try to go over an excessive amount of words as some people can't digest longer chapters! Thanks for the support and see you all next time, will get to more PMs in a couple of days.
