Monday 8:00 am, March 11th.
The Hokage stood in front of the classroom, each student was present. It was finally time, the academy was over for these few, life would start from this point onwards. They weren't cacoons, they were blossoming butterflies, ready to explore. He was disheartened that their instructor was still out of commission but even he would want this to be memorable, "Unlike previous years, the students were given a headband as soon as they finished the exam. This year due to some complications and new rules being implemented, you will get your identification of being a leaf shinobi after completing what your Jonin leader hands out." Looking around the room, the older male took in all the faces of determined students. "I won't sugarcoat things, most of you will fail what your Jonin assigns if you do happen to fail don't let it get to you, with that said your greatest challenges will lie ahead, it may be protecting the village or you might find conflict in yourself. In your three-man cells, one senior shinobi will guide and mentor you through the time you are with them. Don't expect to be placed with your friends, always be alert and don't flatter for a second."
"Team twelve," The atmosphere in the room was at a constant switch, rumors about how the teams would prove who you would start a makeshift family with, everyone was questioning who they would be placed with. "Hotaru Kyokai, Seiko Yuki, and Mia Kobayashi led by Reina Hogaraka after the break you will report to the rooftop where you will meet your Jonin mentor." No one uttered a word, as the Hokage kept going. "Team seven, led by Kakashi Hatake includes, Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto Uzumaki, and Sakura Haruno you guys will report to team seven's training ground."
The silence was interrupted, Naruto took a stand his finger pointing at his emo teammate, "What the hell? I can't be placed with someone that can't even smile!" Holding back his true thoughts, the male's jaw clenched.
"Sit down," Naruto gulped taking a seat, the pressure from the old man's gaze enough to make him think again. "These decisions aren't meant for your liking, it's for your growth if you can't handle this feat I suggest you rethink your life choices."
"Ahem, team thirteen. Akira Niji, Masuo Kurama, and Shinobu Asobiemu mentored by Jiei Shihan you three will report back to the classroom after the break." The teams were slowly coming out, and more and more people started to look at who they would have on their team. "Team ten, Chōji Akimichi, Shikamaru Nara, Ino Yamanaka led by Asuma Sarutobi after break stay in a group your sensei will come towards you." Silence, no one complained.
"Team eight, mentored by Kurenai Yūhi will have, Kirayari Kirazomi, Aju Ishigo, and Kiyoshi Narukami following them team fourteen, Kiba Inuzuka, Hinata Hyūga, and Kimi Asiago led by...Mitarashi Anko the first set will report in front of the academy while the latter will be placed near the forest of death." Letting out a deep breath, Hiruzen continued calling out teams and as his voice started to die out, many of the students kept still. "Once I leave from this spot, you guys will take a short fifteen-minute break then head where you were instructed, Shino and Fukō you already know of your punishment...I'd advise you to learn from your mistakes." All eyes were on the two boys, and not a second later the Hokage was gone.
Shino was the first to stand, all of them were in the dark. No one knew what was happening, but some concluded they weren't graduating. After the boy left the room Fukō stood up next the eyes on him as he walked towards the door, "We were expelled." They were his parting words as he left the classroom, but the second he left many started to group up.
"No one would've seen that coming, that punishment seems harsher than one would assume." Mia stopped next to Hotaru, "Well, at least none of us have to worry about competing against them." Her blunt honesty got a sigh out of Hotaru.
Fukō dragged his feet out of the academy, upon reaching the entrance he witnessed the sheer amount of families waiting for their children. The break was for them to celebrate, many of the families were waiting and as he moved past the mass he felt a set of eyes on him. His brother was gone, which meant someone else was watching him. Not minding, he kept moving. Feet dragging in the dirt path, he could hear the students being let out the yelling from the families. His plans weren't ruined, it was a simple drawback. Looking back his hoodie flew off, he must've been lost in his head he didn't even hear the person behind him.
"So, what's your plan now? You needed to graduate, but here you are alone...are you finally realizing, that something like this would never work out? You're better off alone, leave." The soft feminine voice was tempting, maybe he'd take the advice; everything he wanted was out of his grasp now slowly slipping away.
"Fukō? Do you want to join us?" Hotaru's voice was his savior, the figure and voice gone. Leaving meant, never coming back and he didn't want that. He needed to grow, in order to understand why this girl was able to rid all of these impurities.
"You should enjoy yourself." Silver eyes went to the small group of parents behind her, it seems they were going to have dinner to get to know each other better. Mia and Seiko were around, one inviting while the other judging. "You don't need to worry, this is only the beginning." He almost allowed himself to be swallowed, he almost lost sight of what he needed. "Hotaru, good luck." Ignoring the other two, the male turned back around and kept walking his hoodie coming back on.
"Good luck, also!" He stopped in his tracks for a moment, deja vu. He recalled a moment like this before the exam, the last time he left...this time he wasn't leaving he was going to grow by any means necessary. It was a rare moment today, and Fukō wasn't the only one going to remember this moment. Mitsukaze kept an eye on his granddaughter, since everything that happened he hasn't seen her approach anyone to talk let alone invite them to eat. 'I wonder what fate has planned.'
Mitsukaze had to tap his granddaughter's shoulder to help her escape the trance she was in, "If I knew you were interested in someone I would've invited him to the compound long ago."
"Pardon? He just looked a little down, like everything was against him." Mitsukaze didn't know what she saw, but he didn't bother for long he had to get a grasp on her teammates. "I am Hotaru's grandfather and you two are?"
"Mia Kobayashi, I was previously a peer in the academy now I am Hotaru's teammate." Bowing, she straightened herself only to catch her mother smiling back at her.
"S-Seiko Yuki! I-I am g-generally in the same boat Elder-sama." Following Mia's steps, Seiko swallowed down the nervousness he felt.
"Uyeda Kobayashi," Holding her hand out the beauty was taken back by how gentle Mitsukaze was, "I'm Mia's mother, and thank you for approaching us for a meal."
"I also send my thanks, treating us for a meal will strengthen the bonds between everyone." Seiko's older brother commented, only to get a snicker out of Uyeda.
"So this is your rival? You better not lose to her," Uyeda gave her daughter a nudge and a wink only to get some grumbling out of Mia.

Hiruzen Sarutobi neatly stacked the papers on his desk, in the end, he only took two of Jonin's squad recommendations. The rest were from Jiraiya's well-detailed list, describing it like that was an overstatement the friendly face simply slid a piece of paper with some student teams through the bottom of the door. The Jonin didn't have any problems, at least not that he assumed so. "On what grounds was my brother expelled?"
'Ah, Kei. A young shinobi with the skills to back it up, how unfortunate his brother needed to be punished.' The Hokage had the right amount of patience for this, he figured something like this would happen but he couldn't let something like this slide, it was an opportunity to place his pieces. "Shino was also excluded, they pursued an assailant out of the village only to be placed near death; in other words, two children put their lives on the line for the village." There was a bigger picture in play and Kei couldn't see it, Hiruzen didn't blame the young man, he was only here for his family. "That aside, your brother's feats won't go unawarded I recalled he dealt with Mizuki during the exam incident; I advise you to wait to see what happens." These kids weren't tools, and Kei wasn't the first and wouldn't be the last to complain about their family not graduating.
Exhaling, the elder Sarutobi closed his eyes. The emotion in the room was saying his thoughts, lips parting he spoke, "Shino and Fukō were disqualified from being in a cell, for their accomplishments. They put their lives on the line, and your brother took out someone of higher rank than him; I haven't informed anyone else of this decision, but I plan on selecting them to join the Anbu." Eyelids opened, the emotion in Kei's face was all he needed to know. "You and I know what this means as you are also part of the Anbu in some instances if they do accept they will be kidnapped for a few days to catch a glimpse of what they are capable of after that even I don't need to explain what will happen."
"M-my brother? On what grounds, are you allowed to scout children?" Kei couldn't keep the anger out of his tone, "He doesn't even have many friends, we only have each other so you expect me to allow you to make this decision?" The Hokage kept a close eye on the skilled male, in any case, he was threatened it would only worsen the atmosphere.
"They will be trained like all the other new members, with that in mind considering the last children we had came out differently I will have them placed with special care, meaning someone will be watching them at all times." It wasn't going to help, anyone with a working brain knew what missions the Anbu were tasked with and what would happen if they were captured. The look in the older brothers eyes didn't change it only darkened, "I'll give you this at least, when the Chunin exams come up I will allow these children to partake in the test if they pass then they will be able to retire from the Anbu and continue from there, if not they will be forced to serve until I see fit."
Kei's emotions didn't waver but it was the best bet he would get, "Alright, I'll hold you to that." Leaving in a flash, another voice came into the equation.
"Geez, even I thought he would've attacked you," Jiraiya filled his mouth with some sort of sweet before continuing his little sentence, "Taking a child to the Anbu right after the academy? I hardly ever question your motives but, I hope this doesn't backfire; on another note, I saw this stunning beauty hourglass figure with fair skin; she was with her daughter I presume...might be a little late in getting back to you this time around!" Striking an unorthodox pose, the hardened ally left.
"The Anbu is only for people, that can adapt and erase; the missions they are given affect them differently, it can take the innocence from someone in a heartbeat."
Saving face, that's what Masuo was doing. The Jonin they were assigned was just about the worse he could be matched up with, not to mention his teammates were just as random. Physically pushing himself wasn't his expertise comparing himself to other people regarding the acts of hand-to-hand combat he was below average, sure the academy taijutsu was easy to implement in sparring but life and death danger was another thing. He was now a step close to venturing out, he couldn't speak for his peers across from him, but he was willing to risk it all to succeed. Even if that meant pushing his peers over the edge, it didn't take a simple deduction to guess what was going to happen, they were going to be tested and the male hoped it wasn't physical.
"So, I guess we are going to be a nice little group." Shinobu's words stuck out like a bee in a butterfly patch, Masuo didn't bother to look at the redhead; he knew just about everything he needed to know about the prankster, the only wild card was Akira, of all the things he was placed with the new student. Skillset alone Masuo was in the dark, he had the bare minimum; the time he issued in spectating wasn't wasted in the slightest of course he had some minor information and he could fill in the blanks, but the uncertainty ran high.
"I'm looking forward to working with every one of you." Masuo swallowed down his words, gaining the trust of them was the start. If he could establish a connection in the timeframe before their sensei is summoned, things may work with him.
Putting on a face, the young male smiled. "I hope we grow and see each other as a family soon." Masuo topped his speech off with some small hand movements, it would look more approachable, nervous even. It was all in hope of getting their favor.
"Family, eh?" Akira's voice was low, but both boys picked up on it. Sudden the air around them changed a sudden sense of dread washing over the three preteens.
Jiei Shihan exhaled at the three boys, his group was different than he expected but he would work with it. "Name, age, reason, goal." The quick speech caught Shinobu off guard, even having him as a teacher before didn't prepare them for this.
"Niji, Akira. Age, thirteen; my reason for going down this path is simple, I want to prove myself to a certain select group of people by any means necessary," Jiei listened closely, although calm he was angered Akira Niji was someone that the Hokage took interest in. "My goal is my reason, proving myself and helping my family." Jiei knew this was a start, no one was expected to come out and spill everything about themselves.
"Masuo Kurama, twelve; the reasoning for me becoming a ninja is because I seek answers, take that as you may my goal is just about the same; I have the same picture my parents want." Jiei was displeased with the vague answer, Masuo was one of the brightest students the kid could break down a formation in seconds, so if one thought about it the answers he wanted were all around.
"Shinobu Asobiemu, thirteen." Now, this was the problem child, Jiei figured the pranks would haunt the team until the end of them, "I haven't thought about my reason for becoming a ninja, I enjoy life at the moment; I'm resourceful when something random happens like a wildcard, the goal I set for myself is to enjoy and die with a smile."
"This isn't the academy anymore, your life is on the life starting now and these people around you are who you'll be relying on to have your back, I suggest you squash any bad blood and prepare for the challenges you will face as a team; I won't require you to do any test to become a Genin if you are serious about risking your life and completing your goal come back to this very spot tomorrow expect to work your body beyond belief. Dismissed." Jiei left the trio alone, and the first to break the ice was Shinobu.
"You heard that, I don't trust you guys to have my back but I pray you do; I don't want to pass away due to my teammate's lack of communication and trust." His expression was stern, and it pleased Akira. "It takes time to build trust, for however long we are with each other, I hope we can find some common ground."
"I'm sure with our variety of personalities, we will connect soon we have to feel each other out." Masuo kept up the happy-go-lucky expression, it was better than the truth at this point. Standing, Masuo broke down Akria; from the bright orange curly hair that reaches past his neck, the brown skin complexion and snarky look in his oval emerald eyes. 'There is a thin lining in people, everyone had a look in their eyes that dictated what they could do. How many times have I seen this look? After watching my parents for so long, I can tell from a simple glance that loyalty is something this guy won't uphold.' Sharp brown eyes glared into emerald, both sides looking out for themselves.

"I can't believe we are all on the same team," Aju couldn't hold back her excitement, she was closer than ever from a small but rewardable goal. Luck was with her, on one side was just about her best friend and on the other was someone she deemed worthy of teasing they all could co-exist with ease.
"I heard that out of all the Jonin leaders qualified Kurenai is just about as easy as it goes, she is strong yet easy!" Kirayari wasn't one for taking the route which required less work, but she didn't have a say in this. "Even if one of our teammates doesn't want to speak, our team will no doubt hold the top spot."
"That's just part of his charm, right Kiyoshi?" Nudging the silent individual no one expected him to speak or make a sound, so as he nodded both girls simply took that.
The mood was uplifted, even as the sensei appeared the three students looked at them expectingly, "You all failed, don't bother reporting to me anymore; head back to the academy after today, I evaluated each of your ranks and none of you would accept my teachings." Kurenai's sharp eyes settled on Aju for a second, "Don't take it personally, none of you are qualified especially those who can't grasp where they went wrong." Disappearing, the three were left with totally different outlooks.
"W-what?" The disbelief in Aju's voice didn't help Kirayari with her trembling arms.
Kirayari recalled the words she heard mere seconds ago, failure. Her dream, her goal. It was down the drain, her marks were good but not the best was it her fault the world catered to Hotaru? Balling her hand into a fist she exhaled, everyone was right she was utterly useless. Everyone told her over and over again she wouldn't make it, so what was she expecting? She was a girl born to work at the farm, tending to plants. Would she grow old, thinking about what could've gone differently if she was better?
"Was our sensei known as a jokester in those rumors?" Aju was trying to stop herself from trembling, she didn't want to cry...she couldn't. It was her fault, her rankings were lower than Kirayari and Kiyoshi; if only she were smarter everything would be different. She was empty, three words were all it took to break her, no matter how strong she was...nothing prepared her for this. "Isn't this unfair?" A sniffle escaped, her bold bright green eyes glistening with the sun. Lip's parting, she didn't make a sound. Her world was closing, chest constricting, life falling. A bat of her eyelash freed a runaway tear, as if trailed down her face Kiyoshi smudged it away.
Removing his thumb from her face, her earthy aroma filled his senses, 'Failure, they aren't taking it well.' Shaking his head, Kiyoshi found a hazy memory come and go. Something about Kurenai's speech was off, she didn't mention any flaws of his, strickly the other two. Watching Kirayari stand, Kiyoshi didn't stop her. His mind was still processing everything, maybe those two were blinded by emotions to see what was happening. "I suggest, you stay here for a while."
"WHY?" Kirayari regretted raising her voice, olive green eyes didn't waver as she stared down at Kiyoshi. "You heard her, you aren't dumb you were the highest-ranking out of all of us! Obviously, we ruined your chances." Kiyoshi didn't understand where this was coming from, this self-blame. "This is all some of us had, I'm pretty sure you should go again next year."
His arm came around Kirayari's neck, "I told you to stop moving, the second you leave your dream really will be void." She wasn't listening, placing more pressure on her neck he attempted to render her unconscious. "Aju, if you move I'll break her arm." He didn't want it to come to this, but they weren't smart it was up to him to find out what was happening.
"This was exactly what I was expecting, these children need to wake up to this harsh reality. Nothing is simply going to go the way they want it, Aju and Kirayari are blaming themselves while Kiyoshi is trying to figure out what happens, well if they can't stay there for the next few hours they will be disqualified." Kurenai placed her dainty fingers over her mouth as she yawned. "Will they grow or fail?"
The Jonin had an in-depth chart on her students, to start there was Kirayari: someone that had the drive, but lacked a crucial part to push her forward; no doubt the middle man of the team, she will strive on offense and defense while providing support off of Aju. She is chatty, nice to be around despite having a hard time expressing certain emotions, her main issue is she blames herself or others for her downfall.
Next was Aju, the heart of the team. That little bundle of joy was strong enough to lead if she could map out a basic plan, her skill-set was impressive even Gai acknowledged her sheer power, nonetheless, her intelligence was the main issue; she had the instinct and heart but that wouldn't help against someone with experience.
Lastly, Kiyoshi is probably the most balanced and skilled among the three; but he has the least room to grow, unlike the girls it seemed as if he mastered his fighting style and despite not seeing any jutsu from the boy, Kurenai knew he had somethings to reveal; he was the key for everyone growing. Honestly, her team could either be the best or fail.
Hotaru crossed her legs as she waited for the Jonin leader, the small meal was full of embarrassing remarks about all of them. Her grandfather even picked at her talking to someone, she didn't see what the big deal was; but he was blowing it out of portion. Seriously, but despite the constant teasing she enjoyed the small atmosphere she saw a different side of Mia; the way her mother was, she couldn't wait until Mia matured perhaps she'd be just like her. Seiko on the other hand was freed from any sort of embarrassment, and his brother simply told us stories of him when he was small. Overall, it was a nice way to break the ice surrounding this cell.
"I-I'm glad to be around you guys," Seiko's voice put a smile on both of the girl's faces, "I can only pray everyone else is doing well this time around."
He wasn't wrong, there was a final test no one could prepare for. Still, the cell they had was above average. Hotaru couldn't figure out where Seiko fit, but Mia and her could easily handle the front lines with both of them charging it would be easy to crush any defense. The thought left a bad taste in her mouth, she wasn't one for fighting but if she couldn't talk herself out of it most of the time left for one option.
"I hope everyone else is doing better, especially Sakura." Mia's voice shocked Hotaru more than Seiko, she never would've thought someone like Mia would express feeling a certain way about someone else; then again they were finally starting to see each other differently.
No one questioned why Mia's words, in the end, the three sat in silence each individual thinking of themselves. Hotaru figured this was how the team would operate in most instances, none of them would take the incentive to speak besides Mia; Seiko was a shy child which meant his voice would be lacking and she didn't need to respond unless someone was talking to her.
After a while, Reina finally came into the picture only to study what her students were doing. "Hotaru Kyokai, prodigy some would say. Loner or at least many would assume so, recently has been making some form of kinship. Your clan's background is well known, I can only assume what you will bring to the table." Snapping her fingers Reina watched as the three straightened out. "Mia Kobayashi? Doesn't come from a clan, a civilian born with hard work reaching the top out of her year; some say you are a genius others take it as luck, you are going to write your history starting from today all of you; and to end we have Shinobu?" With the boy shaking his head the Jonin hummed. "Seiko Yuki, ah how could I forget the medic of sorts. You won't last with only that, I see the rumors about your mask are true I wonder when you'll trust us to reveal your face."
She picked at everyone, and she didn't get any noticeable reactions. "Gosh, this group is quite fun." Leaning against the rail she dug in her pocket, her fingers nipping the edge of a folded paper before pulling it to view. "Your goal, find this piece of paper by the end of today once you do it's up to you to locate your team or pass alone." Crumbling it up, she closed and reopened her hand only for the item to disappear. "If any of you fail to find it before the day ends, you all fail." Reina didn't say another word, and in a swift second all three of them separated.
"Idiots," Rotating the back of her hand, she couldn't help but snicker. "Looks like they'll fail without a doubt, and I was generally happy about leading this small set."
xXx
Time ticked, and Seiko was lost. He searched about everything he could, the sun was setting and he haven't found a trace of the paper nor his two new partners. He wasn't one to think anything negative, but he couldn't pass up the idea of them leaving him back; he wasn't as blessed as them, and his skills were far below average it was all making sense in his head, who wouldn't leave him? Kicking a rock, the boy crouched to catch his breath. Then there was the possibility of them looking for him now, 'C'mon.' In an attempt to cheer himself, he stood. It didn't matter now, the sun was gone. He failed, all he had to do was report back to the rooftop. The weakest link was always the one to be abandoned.
He wanted to see the bright side, think that they were looking for him; there was the chance they failed along with him; the odds were low. His two teammates were feats above him, catching up was a dream. After one step, the two people he figured left him appeared both drenched in sweat. With the looks on their face, how heavy they were breathing, they didn't leave him. Extending his hand, his heart skipped a beat as they grabbed ahold. Maybe, just maybe this small team will bring him grace.
The trio finally reached Reina, and the older Jonin couldn't help but pinch the bridge of her nose. "Which one of you guys dug through each trash bin?" She didn't need her senses to tell her they were working hard, "I was expecting you to leave them behind, but you surprised me...you aren't a prodigy for no reason." Reina's eyes settled on Hotaru before turning to Mia and lastly Seiko. "You all get to move on, please report to this spot tomorrow for the physical portion of the little test. Oh, and wash up all of you stink."
Fukō sat with his legs folded, his blade underneath the white bandages and dark cloak. The candle he lit, died. His brother informed him of what was going to happen. One small creek later and he was gone, his vision leaving him. When he awoke, he wasn't alone. Hundreds of other people were in a room with him, he assumed this was part of the qualifications. Taking a glance around the room, he noticed he was just about the youngest here. Many grownups littered around, just as confused as the rest.
"Are you participating also?" The tone, the voice he knew it personally. Standing, his gaze entered those black goggles. They were the only ones here with knowledge of each other presumably, which put them at an advantage.
"That's why I am here." Keeping his words blunt, Fukō didn't want anyone keying in on the fact they knew each other. He couldn't keep track of the people looking around the room, whatever was going to happen was consequential for the mass of people. The people talking in groups were no doubt skilled above himself, of course, if he had to label it he was at the bottom of the barrel. Shino was ahead of him, despite having mixed feelings about the preteen whatever was happening it would be beneficial to have an associate.
"More and more people are waking up, it's only a matter of time before everything starts." Shino's words were right, the more he looked around the more he noticed the eyes on them. The room they were in wasn't tiny, it was rather spacious if he had to compare it the size; he'd say around a quarter of a training field. Fiddling with his bangs, the white-haired male took note of the grown man walking up to them; to make groups in such a short amount of time proved they knew what they were looking for.
"I'm Tzu, my partners and I wanted to know if you two had anyone to intel on what was going on; in my prior knowledge you two are the only children we see here, which makes me assume you were sent here to keep an eye on talent." The bald man was emitting an aura akin to a stone-cold warrior. Someone that's been in many battles.
'This could work in my favor.' Fukō exhaled, "You caught us, your eyes are incredibly sharp if you were able to distinguish us out from everyone else." There was no way in hell he was going to come close to living if they all fought, luckily someone gave them an out. "We are here to keep an eye out for those who show what we are looking for, I'll be willing to give you a heads-up on the challenge coming up if you look out for us. It'll be hard to keep an eye out for everyone while looking over our backs," The offer was too sweet to pass up, anyone who agreed would take anything to prevail.
"Deal." Fukō was glad Shino was keeping his mouth shut, it would be easier to work around things.
"To start, we are going to be forced to kill each other only the survivors will move onto the next area." It was a simple answer, taking in how little people knew about the Anbu and the fact they were the Hokage's most trusted weapon only meant this batch of people would slowly start to thin. "When everyone is awake, someone will come and explain what is happening." True to his words, a female appeared wearing an owl mask.
"Attention, all of you are here to become the Sandaime Hokage's left and right hand. With that in mind, there is no going back; once I leave you may start killing each other, we only want the best of the best; those that can handle the trial and tribulations ahead. Only a couple of you will make it if you have the skills, if you manage to survive this you will be given more in-depth information." Her sentence was cut as she disappeared, blood splattering in the air.
"See, Tzu? I told you, in order to survive this you should form a circle in a corner so you won't be attacked from a blind spot your group should be able to handle mostly everyone here." Fukō smirked as the warrior listened, both boys following suit as they were protected. 'Unfortunately, Tzu you and I both know that four or fewer people will be left alive...and your group is a tad too many.' The battle just started, but people were dropping. It was the harsh reality, of gaining strength.
If he were alone, his life would've been over. He would even have a hard time dealing with Shino, he was lacking in all categories but he made up for it with unorthodox methods. Watching the group battle each attacker, Fukō watched the back of Tzu's head. He was making light of everyone that came to him, simple gestures which involved minor movement; he was conserving his energy no one knew how long this would take, it was the right move.
"So, see anyone worthwhile?" His voice was sturdy, this situation wasn't new to him. Taking in the fact he could've been looking at people to watch out for himself, the young boy scratched his cheek.
"The people playing dead, but the person who caught my interest the most is you." They were playing the role of an advisor, which was working far too well.
Shino abruptly raised his wall of bugs, seconds later an explosion broke through.
Monday 11:27 pm, March 11th.
Mia's blanket wrapped around her slim legs, the moonlight peeking from the window highlighting her creamy skin. Dark brown hair split off into sections on her pure white pillow, teal-colored eyes glistened with the movement of the light. Her slim frame left her warm. The puffy blanket and oversized shirt did wonders for her body, in hindsight, her body temperature wasn't too bad; she was overreacting. Resting was proving to be more arduous than she anticipated, she wasn't excited nor disappointed, but she couldn't find it in herself to bid a healthy night of rest. She officially flew through the first segment, yet the second portion was taking place in a few hours. Was she uneasy? Worried? She couldn't figure it out. Could it be because of her decision earlier?
She didn't want to seem like an asshole, but she had a bare thought about leaving Seiko behind. He was great in his own specialties, still couldn't see a world where he fits in with the team. Skills alone, they were far apart she couldn't even recall what rank he was. Then again, judging someone off rank alone seemed to never work; Mia couldn't gauge his skills. Turning, her teal pools took in the glass and the bright planet in the sky on the other side. It was bad enough she immaturely spoke to Hotaru about ditching Seiko, if it wasn't for her words...she would've gone along with her thoughts. Hotaru pointed out an issue in her, that she failed to notice. Apparently, she had trouble adapting majorly. Hotaru even gave many instances to back up her statement, and Mia couldn't disagree or agree.
So if she didn't think Seiko could keep up, would that mean she was disappointed in the team she was put in? Would switching him out please her? Who was she to demand such a thing? Ah, she was angry with herself. That much she could tell, lifting up the covers slid off her top. She was entering a world where anyone could die at any moment, she didn't wish death upon anyone especially her soon-to-be partners. It was merely a start and she was having trouble, they haven't taken on a mission nor got their headbands.
Turning once more, her lungs filled with oxygen before deflating. The sigh relieved some minor stress. Mia knew this was something that wouldn't blow away, the whole ordeal would be cleared in her head the second they got confirmation from their sensei. Her physical prowess was above average, and with all the effort she put in herself; she wasn't expecting to lose any time soon. She couldn't. No, she wouldn't.
Closing her eyes, she swallowed down what her gut was telling her. Faith, she had faith in people that had the skills...but she couldn't tell if Seiko was one of them.
Tuesday 2:00 am March 12th.
Her voice was alluring, everyone said it. She was a beauty, people often wanted her attention. She didn't play into it, she fooled everyone. She didn't care about anything but her family, her children. At times, she discarded her husband.
'G...get up.'
Her tone, she cared she wanted to see him survive.
'Hurry...'
She was worried, she didn't want it to end.
'GET UP.'
Fukō opened his eyes, the first thing he did was make sure he was in perfect condition. Some pain altered his right foot, left rib, and the side of his head. Letting his eyes and ears adjust, he cracked his head to the side. Shino was in the middle of fighting out someone, he was in a losing battle. Turning back straight he watched as Tzu stayed in battle despite missing an arm, he sutured himself his team on the ground scattered.
Regaining his senses, Fukō wiggled. Debris laid on him, he was trapped. This was the last thing that needed to happen, sure he could play dead but everyone here was leagues above him. The numbers were diminishing, rotating his head in the opposite direction he came in contact with a charred head. The sight wasn't pleasant, small strands of blonde hair could be made out; the teeth were burnt but useable if someone was into that type of field, the skin was beyond repair. How come he couldn't smell the body next to him earlier? How long was he out? That didn't matter, Tzu should've figured they weren't of higher status from watching Shino. Time was ticking, attempting to move the veins in his neck started to outline, teeth grinding together he kept trying to move.
After spending some energy in a senseless struggle, the white-haired preteen started to think. With a body next to him, he could use it as a cover-up; of course, he'd have to use his teeth to drag the head over to him, using it many would assume the body died with his face still intact.
Staying calm he watched as Shino finished with his battle, luck or skill he wasn't going to help. The first step in making bad decisions was panicking, he didn't want to draw attention to himself. Closing his eyes, he waited for his mind to figure out something...anything. The rubble started to lift, his outfit was covered in dirt but that was the last thing on his mind. Quickly escaping he watched as the small group of bugs scattered away, he was slowly becoming in debt to Shino. With more room to look around, he noticed that it was five people left including himself. Tzu was handicapped, and Shino used most of his energy to battle; the two others looked pretty exhausted. Everyone was in a terrible state, which put them at an advantage.
They had years on him, experience. Under normal circumstances, he'd die almost immediately. Two sets of eyes were on him, he was previously trapped which meant he was the wildcard; they were wary of him. He couldn't let anyone get their energy back, he had one smoke bomb he stored on him for his archery unfortunately he was taken without his bow and arrows. Digging in his pocket, his fingers latched onto the circular-shaped item. When the timer went off, he'd need to make sure he moved with precise timing. He only had one shot, taking out his arm he launched the ball into the air. In little to no time, the room was filled with smoke.
Shino waited in the corner, and as the smoke cleared he was shocked to see the last two contestants beneath Tzu's foot. "Nice, hindering their vision." Shino watched as the hardened warrior smiled with a thumbs up, maybe...if he could've taken a picture of it...he would've cause next all he saw was blood.
Fukō's tantō stuck out the front side of Tzu's neck, Shino didn't utter a word. He knew who he was dealing with, and what he deemed cherishable. Everything else was expendable, for a moment he remembered the reason he played like he forgot everything. Cause the second he opened his mouth, he knew everyone he loved would die in a heartbeat. The person standing a few feet away wasn't human. No, they only were human around certain people. Shino knew Fukō was trying to put fear in him, and it was working. Maybe, it was only effective because he saw firsthand what he was capable of.
The room was filled up with gas, and before they could knock out Shino could've sworn he saw the male's lips move.
Tuesday 9:38 am March 12th.
They weren't told a specific time which could've backfired, so Hotaru was surprised to see she was the last one present. She didn't oversleep, nor did she take her time getting ready. Lately, Diao has been advancing into her domain. Faster than she expected at least, despite how carefully he moved her grandfather warned him about coming over unannounced. Apparently, her cousins warmed up to him. Slowly, he was weaving his way into her life and she wasn't having it. His proposal was still on her mind, she could find out what she wanted with power like that. She was given an option, she wasn't accepting it. There was no telling what would happen if she joined hands, what would become of her life. Hell, she was still growing. At least she assumed.
Taking a gander at her two partners, she noticed she was quite taller than the two. Well, she was above average in the academy. Being slightly prouder, than she should be. The female finally clued into the missing Jonin, there wasn't any set time so there was no telling how long they would be waiting. Fortunately, she bought something to take her mind off things. It was her escape in the academy, and at home. Something, she poured blood into.
"My mother informed me to supply you two something to consume," Mia held out two steamed buns, the capsule she kept them infilled with vapor. It was simply bread, and upon looking at the time Hotaru recalled skipping out on breakfast. Seiko was the first to take one, bidding Mia thanks before stuffing himself.
Extending her arm out Hotaru knew it was best to keep her energy levels up, there was no telling when the challenge would start. Conserving was her best bet, she needed to be calm and collective to deliver her best. Nibbling off a chunk, she felt the buttery taste serenade around her tastebuds. Homemade cooking was indeed a luxury she was missing out on, her grandfather either bought home food or she would get some herself. She never took in the time to learn how to make something, but she didn't think it'll be that hard all it took was simple numbers and a hint of spices.
Almost forgetting her manners, Hotaru finished the tasty dough. "Please, relay to your mother that her cooking is superb." Being rivals meant in the field they would keep each other on their toes, outside they could make some bond. All of them, after today they would be looking at each other as lifelong teammates. She heard stories, how everyone that started in a cell stayed together. Before she could go back to her book, Mia snatched the note everyone failed to catch.
"It says we should report to the training grounds, it doesn't specify which one." Mia watched as the piece of paper turned into a ray of light, and this caught Hotaru's eyes. "Let's head over there now? We are all grouped up, and we all look healthy." Hotaru watched as Mia's eyes lingered on Seiko for a second. Based on his looks, one would believe the male was dying.
Hotaru didn't say a word and Seiko followed her steps, if Mia wanted to take the leading role nothing would stop her. It would actually benefit everyone more than she liked to admit, and in little, to no time the three were off.
Upon reaching the correct training grounds, Hotaru was surprised to see Reina standing with a piece of paper in hand.
"About time, I was starting to think this group was lazy." Reina tossed her hands in the air, it was a gamble to set up early but with these students, it was working in her favor. "Listen, I'll only explain this once! Your goal today, have you ever heard of capture the flag?"
"The objective is to capture the other team's flag, located at the team's "base", and bring it safely back to our own base." Mia took the front, as Reina expected. She already had a base idea of what this team would look like and they weren't disappointing.
"Perfect, we'll be playing that." Perhaps the trio would've been relieved if they were speaking to someone of similar age, "You three will look for the flag I hid in the forest while being hunted by me, if none of you find it and I capture you all...each of you fail. If I capture you alone, your teammates have a chance to save you but if they catch the flag while you are in my possession you will fail. Questions? No, get going you have a five-minute headstart." Watching her students leave left a sour taste in Reina's mouth, this was a learning experience for herself as well as them.
xXx
Seiko wasn't gifted like them, so as they moved he was happy they were slowing down for his sake. "If Hotaru and I hold her off, would you have enough time to search for the flag?"
He wasn't shocked by Mia's bluntness, the plan sounded nice but he felt she was looking down on him too much. "Theoretically, yes. But, even if I find the flag what if you two are captured?" His voice was low and it almost flew by Mia.
"We will be playing tag with her, getting captured is the main issue at most one of us will be caught but with someone in her arms it'll be easier to free them." Mia stopped in her tracks, it seems her gamble wasn't paying off. "That's the plan, Seiko keep running!"
He didn't need to be told twice, crouching down he used his legs to jump on top of a branch before leaping to another.
"Seems, my two darlings are eager to get their asses handed to them." Reina stepped from behind a tree, her lavender-colored eyes sending fear down the two growing girls. Without much talking the older woman was surprised to see Hotaru dip back into the bushes while Mia charged. 'Interesting, seems like they have some sort of plan?' In the flash of a second, the Jonin threw her head back dodging a Kunai that came flying at her. Moving to the side she escaped a half-assed kick from Mia, were these the top marks of the academy?
Reina sidestepped once more moving out of the way of a flying Kunai, this time Mia came at her faster and she easily countered by jumping over the small girl, that was her mistake. Coming out, Hotaru met her midair; ninja sandals landed against Reina's arm as she blocked the attack. 'Seems, the guppies have some sort of attack pattern if they came up with this on the fly it's honestly scary.' Reina watched as Hotaru flipped back, both of them landing. Mia didn't leave anytime to recollect, her right foot planted on the ground as she twisted her body her left leg out to catch Reina's side.
The battle experience and skills were largely gapped, using one finger she stopped the young martial artist. The next issue was Hotaru who came from the side trying to get a nice little hit in, unfortunately, they failed to gauge her skills. Catching the fist, the older woman let out a giggle. "Nice try, but next time don't rush in so obvious." Ducking she watched as another Kunai flew in the air, it was aimed for her head which would've killed her.
"S-sorry wasn't aiming there." Seiko stood on top of a tree branch, his voice hardly audible.
"What?" Reina asked confused as to what he said.
"S-sorry! You fell for our trap! Their plan worked better than I expected." The young boy smiled underneath his ventilator mask, Reina attempted to move but was shocked to see her hands and feet frozen. "You were fighting ice clones from the start, the real Mia and Hotaru are searching for the flag...it was my job to keep you busy."
Reina didn't have to be told, she put the pieces together especially with how the clones were now freezing her in her tracks. "Nice concept, I should've figured it out," Shaking her head she let out a breath of fresh air. "Seems, I've been too lenient." The sudden change in her voice forced Seiko to take a step back. "Looks like, I'm going to have to teach you guys a lesson in all categories." The ice began to crumble, before he could get away she appeared right in front of him, his face landing right under her chest.
Hotaru and Mia looked back at the blinding light, it was like the gods came down to bless the world. So, they were surprised when Reina tapped both of them on the head. "Seems like you guys are going to fail." Mia didn't jump back, she grabbed ahold of the Jonin only to get hit in the back of the neck her body going limp. "Now, Hotaru...are you going to come quietly?"
In the end, none of them got ahold of the flag, and the blame was on Reina. Turns out she forgot the flag at home, but she didn't tell them that. She did allow them to pass due to their quick thinking and teamwork, and thus team twelve was born.
Masuo didn't think people could move like this, but somehow he was ahead of Akira which more or less pleased him. Above him was Shinobu who was just as tired as he was, they started the day with stretches and minor meditating which was the highlight of everything. After they started a long-drawn-out run around the village, Jiei stated if they stopped moving he'd force them to pose nude in front of the Hokage which more or less got everyone motivated.
As Masuo reached the end, he fell straight onto his face. His body was burning, hell he could feel his sweat start to burn away from him overheating and it wasn't helping that Akira finished right behind him wouldn't stop his strange little quirk.
"J-Jiei-sama said, we get a five-minute break before we are forced to start the next portion," Shinobu informed the group before laying his head back down, Masuo could tell their Jonin was hardcore, but for this amount of work...was it worth it? By the end of this, he'd age twice of his father. "L-long term," Masuo listened to Shinobu's deep breathing in between sentences, "t-this is going to work with us, think about it! W-what other teams are being pushed to the edge?"
Off in the distance, Gai rubbed his ear.
"We'll be lucky to survive the next exercise," Akira's grim words got strange looks all around, "One of us will probably die from overheating." Masuo forced himself off of the ground, due to the excess amount of moving he wasn't thinking straight. During this time, it would be better for him to hydrate it's what his body was begging for.
"We should be preparing for the next step instead of resting, if we quickly get a sip of water it'll increase our chances of surviving the next step." Taking a step forward, the young boy fell once again his mouth full of dirt.
Shinobu broke out laughing but immediately started holding his side, "S-stop, it hurts to laugh!" Rolling to the side the laughter was replaced with whines for mercy, and in the process, Akira looked at his teammates as if they were dead weight.
"No shit, everything hurts!" Standing straight, the male felt his legs wobble before going out and joining his violet-haired teammate on the ground. The sudden crash gave Shinobu a mixture of pain and joy.
Jiei leaned behind a tree, a smile tugging on his features. The Jonin didn't expect this atmosphere in the slightest, but it seemed even kids will be kids. It wasn't necessarily bad that they weren't doing what all the other teams did to pass, but bonding was the most crucial step in making a successful cell. That and out in the world, when your back is against the wall you sometimes need someone to lean on. Jiei was hoping these children became pillars for each other, helping each other rise to great lengths. He already had formations mapped out, and knew what to train each individually on. Maybe, taking on a team of brats would be easier than he thought.
xXx
Akane sat with her sister, watching the children yell at each other. She wasn't sure how long they had been there, but if someone took a gander at how messy they looked; they'd think they were bums. "How did Kakashi's program go?" When her sister was like this, it was full-on work mode, it was something admirable.
"He excluded me, but it was the bell test. He didn't want me nearby since the kids were very hostile, I think he didn't want me to see him abuse those poor children other than that it looked swell until I left, when are you going to tell your team they passed?"
"Look at them, Kirayari and Aju are talking while Kiyoshi sits there listening. I want to see how long it'll take them to realize." Akane listened to her sister's laughter, and she started to pity the poor group that was under that tyrant. "What did the Hokage say?"
The sudden mood switch was something she was used to by now. "He's thinking about it, I am kinda an oddball when it comes to it everyone in my year had a squad and here I was alone," Akane said, which got a brow raised by her elder sister.
"Don't think like that, you were simply to advance for your time...now you better stop slacking off, this group of ninjas is going to change the world." Kurenai looked down at her younger sister, her fair-skin glistening with the sun.
"You say that all the time, and here we are doing just about the same shit." Akane regretted her words as soon as they slipped the sudden smack on the back of her head, caused some discomfort. "I'm going to tell Asuma-kun you keep putting your hands on me! I wonder what he'll think of you after." It wasn't that big of a secret that the male Jonin was crushing on Akane's sister. Everyone could tell with his simple antics of removing his smokes to correcting his posture.
"Hardy har, let's talk about you missy. You are nearing that age, even though fourteen seems young I was a well-groomed young Kunoichi. I had everyone fawning over me, but I was too immersed with my training to care...some people weren't you don't know how many people got together during that age, it's kinda surprising." While reminiscing about her younger days, Akane couldn't help but remember how bratty people said Kurenai was. "Anyways, go inform them that they graduated and tell them to eat and shower."
Akane let out a low growl for the work she was given before heading over.
Upon reaching the trio she was quite shocked to see how big Aju's eyes got, "You guys are officially shinobi now, get home and rest up; expect to start formal training in the upcoming days."
"Wait! Who are you?" Aju's voice was louder than Akane thought. Viewing the three, she couldn't help but have a soft moment; they had similarities to her best friend's team.
"I'm Akane Yūhi, remember the name or whatever." Throwing her hand in the air, she started leaving the three, a smile coming onto her face from the small interaction.
There weren't many people left, considering the first challenge no one was surprised. It seemed there was more than one group, which should've been obvious. Joining such an organization would bring forth many connections, then again it'll also have just as many downsides. This meant the applicants left were skilled enough to survive, if it was another physical challenge the winners were the ones that looked brand-new. Twelve people left, each of them surrounded a table. They were once again in an enclosed area, this time they weren't alone in the slightest. Members of the elite squad harbored in the shadows, people could only assume what could come next.
Fukō didn't particularly enjoy the eyes on him, he could sense their presence they weren't taking it low; they wanted to throw them off. Now, he wasn't anywhere close to Masuo in terms of intelligence or reading the room. He worked around what he was given, if he had to give himself a strength it would be adaptability. He was naturally a quick thinker, but he really shined when it came to long-term plans. If life was a game, he'd be in a subclass of the commander. If not that, perhaps he was trash.
Scratching his cheek, the preteen took in the few he was competing with. Each person he studied was emitting a strange aura, when he grows would he come to have such a display? Even Shino had a faint trace which made the male believe it was in terms of strength. Comparing himself to these people was laughable, he was a cockroach living off the scraps in this pack of wolves. Luckily, no predator would even think of roach as a threat. Moving under the radar is what would help him in such a close challenge.
"Simple rules, remove your hand from the box you will be disqualified. It is time-based, whoever holds the longest time will prevail." It was the same person who explain to them the conditions at the origin, "We will call each of you one at a time to participate," It was ominous and vague. It left many people to overthink.
The challenge had to be above willpower, the first was meant to highlight skills while the next was to prove how far one would go...or was it trust in the village? Trust in yourself?
One by one, people left and didn't return. It only bought more stress, alas it was Fukō's turn, and a female operator pointed towards him. He stood, everyone was watching him no one spoke the whole time. Walking towards the door, he gulped. One step after another he was on the other side, and after quite a walk he was placed in a square room.
There wasn't any light, no that wasn't important. There was no sound, he could hear his thoughts clearly. Despite being in complete darkness, it was obvious the box was in the middle. Hesitation, he didn't want to continue. Putting his hand in the box, was too risky. Then again he made it this far, was losing a hand worth the trouble?
Pale fingers tapped against the object, he would be killed if he didn't willingly start. Inhaling and exhaling, he quickly stuffed his left hand inside. Eyelids shut, he wondered if this is where the pain would start. Mind being fixated on the box he ignored the silence, he didn't start counting beforehand. He was in a losing battle, zoning back onto the goal. He let his chakra fade from his hand, it was simply in case something happened.
Fukō's ears adjusted to the silence, he couldn't tell how long he's been in. In the timespan he entered and placed his hand inside, it felt as if years had gone by. His ears twitched with the sound of his heartbeat, blood, and constant stomach growls. He kept his breathing steady, but haven't taken a single movement. Was he scared? When did his heart get so loud? Alone. He was alone.
Blinking, the young boy found himself back at his house. The small wooden figure, covered in blood. It wasn't his, it was the neighbors. They were caught trying to take what was his, he didn't enjoy that. At all. He owned it, took care of it, and made sure it was clean. Who gave them the power to steal what he needed? The sound of them crying hit one ear, it didn't register.
"I take care of mine." Gasping for air, Fukō bought his hand upwards to rub his lips. He heard himself say it, feeling a set of hands draped over his shoulders. His body beckoned for the familiar scent,
"Of course you do, my love you have to take care of what you want."
He recalled sitting on a bench watching a family of ducklings learning to swim, his mother took him here to calm both of them down. Lately, she's been getting angrier certain spasms here and there. "..." Her mouth was moving, but he couldn't hear what she was saying. It was the first time he saw her look, depressed.
"M-mommy?"
"Snowflake, you'll reach places I could only wish."
Removing his hand from the box, and taking a step back he slipped on some liquid. Tumbling onto the ground, the smell of puke ran around his nostrils. When did he even reject the water he drunk earlier? Why, was he getting fragments of his memory? What was he missing, who was he missing? Didn't his mother say they were the same? He was a little older, but her words changed. Why? Why couldn't he remember certain things? The door opened, and he was dragged out.
"Congratulations, you survived ten minutes and thirty-five seconds." The monotone voice didn't register in his head, and as he was placed in a whole new room alone. He used his strength to look back, he was putting the pieces together. The box wasn't the goal, the room was. It was making him go insane. Feeling weaker than before, he couldn't stop his eyes from closing.
Omake #2
"Get into position everyone!" The camera started to tick as Seiko, quickly rushed back to the group. Standing in the middle giving a small smile, this graduation picture was something he wanted to keep.
Masuo looked down at Fukō before falling onto his back, the minor weight forced Fukō's head to fall on the top of Mia's head; which caused her to turn an annoyed expression on her face. During that, Shinobu had his water balloon ready and tossed it at Akira who unfortunately got splashed from behind that didn't stop his eyes from leaving Aju at all. Speaking of Aju she had both arms around Sakura and Kirayari, smiling like she didn't have a care in the world.
Hotaru fell victim to her peer's antics, Naruto ended up nudging Sasuke which in tail threw Kiyoshi off-balance knocking the book out of her grasp. All of this captured the truth of the academy, but the best part about the photo was how it clicked when a bird soaring above pooped and it hit Kirayari right on her forehead.
The picture rested on the counter next to Iruka, the sun reflecting off of the glass, the sticky note on the wood read, 'We made it!'
Sorry for the wait was sick, and the chapter kept getting corrupted. Pretty hefty set here, think of it as an early thanksgiving. Originally it was around 17k words, but I had to cut it into two. Now onto the chapter, lots to take in teams to some minor problems. I think, the hardest part was the Anbu section I couldn't get a grasp on what to do and make it look reasonable, but you'll be surprised how it comes out in the end. Aju and Kirayari having a little moment was something, that really opened doors. Mia has doubts about Seiko, did he prove her wrong or is it the starting of underlying problems. Masuo and Akria have tension, but most of all everyone is fine! For now.
Felt to end it on a light note, it'll only grow darker here onwards.
Sakura did make progress, in a natural way perhaps? Personally, almost everyone in Naruto has some type of illness. I think Sakura's would be along those lines, in the anime she did so many things which made me question...why? I think her obsession is the main reason. Masuo does indeed have a good grasp on people, including Akira...but maybe something is off. Jiraya is back and he saw someone, with their daughter can't help but wonder how that'll go.
Perhaps Masuo does think too much, Danzo being slightly more deluded comes from his greed of living; he sees himself as someone that needs to live while others are at his disposal for the protection of himself and what he wants. Sasuke's little altercation let's say it stems from why he keeps looking at Hotaru, thanks and haha the day Diao and Fuko meet I can only imagine what will happen.
Danzo is always on the look for people he can use, whoever he can infect he will. Haha, Fuko who knows if someone will uncover it. Sakura is back and better than ever, in a sense. I can only wonder what Sakura will do with solidifying her obsession even further. But only time will tell.
The teams are...unique some could be seen. I had a long discussion about it with someone on discord, believe it or not. What do you guys think? Thanks for the support! Since it kept corrupting I am going to edit some mistakes in a bit. Also, slowly starting a new format with the date and time to keep things orderly and for birthdays and what not.
See ya.
